And once again, another killing, sanctioned and approved by the no-regulations-more-guns NRA and the foot soldiers of the NRA, Republican party.
The mother called 911 to say her 5-year-old boy shot his baby brother with a paintball gun.
But it wasn’t a paintball gun. It was a .22-caliber Magnum revolver. And the 9-month-old boy didn’t survive.
Authorities are trying to figure out what led to Monday’s shooting in Elmo, in the northwest corner of Missouri.
“At this point foul play is not suspected, and it appears at this time that the shooting was accidental,” the Nodaway County Sheriff’s Office said.
Sheriff Darren White told CNN affiliate KCTV that the baby was in a playpen when his brother found the gun lying around a bed.
When emergency crews arrived, they found the infant had been shot in the head. The child was flown to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, where he was pronounced dead, the station reported.
Convicted felon Dinesh D’Souza went to the friendly confines of Fox News and had his friendly safety net cut from under him when he was called out by Megyn Kelly for attacking President Obama. Dinesh was supposed to be talking about the difference between Al Sharpton and Martin Luther King, but when he tried including the president in his dumb comparison, Kelly puts him in his place.
D’Souza: …how different a legacy it is from the current generation of race activists Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, but I would add Eric Holder and Barack Obama, who are cut from a completely different cloth have a completely different attitude toward the color-blind ideal, which they reject.
Kelly: How so, how do you put Al Sharpton in the same field as Barack Obama?
D’Souza: Well, they’re not the same, I mean Barack Obama is actually an odd example because although he’s the first African America president he actually hasn’t had the African-American experience. In fact he’s not descendent from slaves on either side of his family. His father…
Kelly: What do you mean he hasn’t had the African America experience, he has black skin and he grew up in America as a black man
D’Souza: Well, he grew up in Hawaii and then he spent..
Kelly: That’s America!
D’Souza: …a considerable time in Indonesia, He’s made multiple trips to Kenya..
Kelly: Oh Come on Dinesh! That does not deprive him of his experiences of a black man.
Finally, someone with enough kahunas to not only call out Fox News on their lies, but also enough kahunas to take the network to court!
In an appearance on CNN, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo explained that the lawsuit against Fox will happen.
“When we’re insulted, and when we’ve had an image, then I think we’ll have to sue, I think we’ll have to go to court, in order to have these words removed,” Hidalgo told Amanpour in an interview. “The image of Paris has been prejudiced, and the honor of Paris has been prejudiced.”
When asked to clarify which network she planned “to take to court and sue,” Hidalgo replied: “Fox News, that’s the name.”
Hidalgo’s remarks come after Fox News ran multiple reports describing areas of Paris (and England) that were governed by Sharia law and off-limits to non-Muslims. The network has since apologized for making “regrettable errors on air regarding the Muslim population in Europe—particularly with regard to England and France.”
“This applies especially to discussions of so-called ‘no-go zones,’ areas where non-Muslims allegedly aren’t allowed in, and police supposedly won’t go,” anchor Julie Banderas said in one on-air apology. “To be clear, there is no formal designation of these zones in either country, and no credible information to support the assertion there are specific areas in these countries that exclude individuals based solely on their religion.”
Republican presidential wannabe Mike Huckabee – a recent extreme critic of everything Beyoncé – obviously thought he was still on Fox News and anticipated soft questions when he went on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. But Jon, the koolest and realest man in news, had other things up his sleeve.
“She doesn’t have to be vulgar to set a trend,” Huckabee said on “The Daily Show,” echoing his remarks criticizing the President for letting his daughters listen to Beyoncé’s “mental poison.”
“Do you know any parent who has a daughter that says, ‘honey, if you make really good grades, some day when you’re 12 or 13 we’ll get you your own stripper pole?'” Huckabee asked. “Come on, Jon, we don’t do this in our culture.”
Stewart’s jaw dropped before he asked Huckabee to prepare himself for a special clip. The host cut to footage of Huckabee, plugging away on a bass, guitar backing Ted Nugent live on Fox in a performance of “Cat Scratch Fever.” The song contained such lyrics as “I make the pussy purr with the stroke of my hand.”
As “The Daily Show” audience roared, the ex-governor and former Fox host began talking about the song’s original release in 1978. He told an unconvinced Stewart that the song was an “adult song, geared for adults.”
Huckabee closed by urging the host to read his book.
Republicans, you are not doing a good job at tanking the economy. According to this new poll by the Washington Post, the president’s work on the economy is paying off, and Americans are giving Mr. Obama some much needed credit.
Per a Washington Post/ABC News poll released Monday, Obama’s approval rating is back at 50%, the highest recorded in that poll since spring of 2013, and a nine-point shift since December. 44% disapprove of Obama, ten points lower than in December, one of the few times in his second term he’s been above water.
The WaPo poll echoes those by PEW and Gallup that have also found Obama’s approval rating trending upward in the last two months.
The spike in his approval is largely attributed to steadily improving job numbers combined with plunging gas prices. (Some even wonder whether the decrease in gas prices might have saved the Democrats had it happened only a couple months ago.)
This is a very exciting day at America The Not So Beautiful as Mitt Romney has chosen this blog to formally announce that he will be running for President in 2016. He told me that he hopes the third time is the charm and that he has learned from his past errors. He wants to explain why he is running and point out what he could do better than President Obama if he is elected President of the United States. But I really don’t want to take up any more of his time so ladies and gentlemen here is Governor Mitt Romney!
Thank You Mike. I’m so glad that you allowed me this wonderful venue to announce my candidacy for President of these United States in the year 2016. I agree that America isn’t very beautiful under the leadership of Barack Obama. Now everyone already knows my faults. It’s already been spoken about ad nauseum in past election cycles. The fact that I was fully behind the Vietnam war, even marched in favor of it, but of course I did not serve my county. Instead I went to France, a wonderful country and expressed my love for my beautiful wife Ann. Everyone has seen those photos of myself on the beach in the south of France, where they have this wonderful little film festival called “The Cannes Film Festival”. I wrote in the sand “I Love Ann” with a big heart around it and paid someone 10 grand to photograph it from above. Yes, you have all seen that photo that was taken while our brave soldiers were dying for a great cause in Vietnam.
But we have already debated that photograph and I ask Americans to simply move on please. Just place that in your binders of thoughts and memories and please move on. I realize now that I should have been more discreet and just taken a photo of my young, taut body in a bubble bath. I mean I could have written Ann’s initials in the bubbly soap to show my love and undying affection for her. Yes, that would have sufficed, I understand now.
I know I took a very big hit with those comments at the social club. Where in front of millionaires I said that 47 percent thing. I said that 47 percent of Americans just want hand outs from the government and that Barack Obama would give them that. I have been thinking very much about that comment and I now realize I was wrong. It’s really only 45 percent. How insensitive of me to say that 47 percent are takers when it is really only 45 percent. I have learned from that mistake, and have met the two percent that convinced me they are workers not takers. So yes the number is most definitely 45 percent. I’m sorry that I offended two percent of America that didn’t deserve it. Truly sorry.
People feel, I’m sorry…..felt, that I was out of touch with most ordinary people. One reason I believe is that I only paid 13 percent tax while the middle class often pays 25-35 percent. Even though I believe that I’m still giving away much more money since I’m a multi-millionaire, I understand that it doesn’t look good. Especially since I only pay those taxes when I’m running for President. Otherwise I really don’t pay anything. Anyway I have decided that this is insensitive to the middle class and so I paid 14 percent this year. Believe me that extra one percent adds up to quite a bit of cash since I’m a multi-millionaire. I hope this proves that I’m a friend of the middle class and with that extra money leaving my accounts I do understand the hardships you feel on a daily basis. I really do. This should put aside any more questions or negative ads in regards to my taxes.
Now that I have put all of this silly business behind me I’d like to show you why I could do better than the current Democratic administration if you would so kindly elect me President. I had said in my previous campaign that the economy would be destroyed if Barack Obama was elected for another four years. Since that time gas prices have plummeted while the stock market has soared. Unemployment continues to decline month by month. While jobs are being created every month in the 150-200K range. This is all pretty much the opposite of what I said would happen throughout the campaign and debates. You have all done an admirable job of trying to prove me wrong and I believe I pushed you in that direction through my brilliant psychology that I learned in the best schools since the age of five. I vocalize negative comments and this motives you, it motivates you to do better, the wonderful American people. So, just imagine what we could do together if I were actually President! The possibilities are endless.
My words might have been wrong but my heart was in the right place. Speaking of heart I just need to remind everyone that I do love Ann. I just love Ann.
Some people think I’m running again because I have so much money that I don’t know what to do with it. This couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m running for many honorable reasons but the most honorable is to protect this country from terrorists and to retain our freedoms. Barack Obama didn’t have the money to solely distribute “The Interview” but I do. This would show the terrorists that we are strong and not weak. And unlike the President I have indeed ridden horses bare chested like Vladimir Putin. This shows manliness and strength and power. I have ridden Ann’s ponies bare chested, I love Ann, I do love Ann.
I believe I have made my points. I’m a true protector of the middle class. I now believe in simple bubble bath selfies over wasteful high angle helicopter shots. I think only 45 percent of this great country are takers. I now pay my 14 percent of taxes when I run for President. Yes the economy is incredibly strong but I can make it stronger with my ability to personally distribute any film that is censored or banned because of terrorism. This is the new Mitt Romney. Please vote for me in 2016 to be the next President of the United States.
But the election has passed and saying the word “flu” does not stir up the fear that many politicians need to win elections. Remember the dreaded ebola that “crossed our southern borders” with ISIS insurgents, the disease bound to wipe out America because Obama had no clue?
Yea, that ebola was the topic in the midterm elections as Republicans found their talking point of fear and hammered it home until the swept both the House and Senate, and now that they’re in power, the word ebola is just a faint memory.
Meanwhile, the flu has already killed 45 kids, 19 this week alone, but the Republican fear mongers are already in power, so dead kids mean nothing. And the disease, currently in 46 states according to the government’s weekly FluView surveillance report, goes unnoticed.
Republicans are already in power. Fearing people about the deadly flu would be pointless. We wait ’till the next election when their base needs a good scaring out to the polls to talk about the flu! Until then, carry on. Nothing to see here except young dead kids.
Where are their morals, where are their decency? This low down re-enactment of a terrorist attack in France that left 17 people dead just shows us these people have no clue, no morals and definitely no decency.
A Texas pro-gun group organized a re-enactment of the Charlie Hebdo massacre in a bizarre bid to test what would have happened if one of the murdered scribes was armed.
But the experiment set up by the group The Truth About Guns backfired — in no scenario was the “armed civilian” able to take out both “terrorists.”
Perhaps even more disappointing for the pro-gun activists, only one of the volunteers playing the role of the armed civilian even managed to survive — by fleeing the scene.
Pro-gun activist Nick Leghorn, who helped organize the experiment, not surprisingly downplayed the results.
“It’s interesting to see how people react under stress,” Leghorn told a local CBS affiliate.
“It’s not what you’d expect people do.”
The set, created in the town of Plano, mirrored the Paris office where the bloody terror attack was carried out last week.
Armed with paintball guns, two volunteers played the roles of Cherif and Said Kouachi, the sibling extremists who carried out the Jan. 7 slaughter.
Another common lie Republicans tell is that Barack Obama is engaged in a war on religion. That line of course, is meant to keep the Christian conservatives in line and to foster their continued hate for the president Yet, in spite of that lie, the president just cintinued a long tradition and proclaimed January 16th as Religious Freedom Day.
Below is the full text of the president’s proclamation.
From many faiths and diverse beliefs, Americans are united by the ideals we cherish. Our shared values define who we are as a people and what we stand for as a Nation. With abiding resolve, generations of patriots have fought — through great conflict and fierce debate — to secure and defend these freedoms, irrevocably weaving them deep into the fabric of our society. Today, we celebrate an early milestone in the long history of one of our country’s fundamental liberties.
On January 16, 1786, the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom was adopted. It was one of the first laws in our Nation to codify the right of every person to profess their opinions in matters of faith, and it declares that “no man shall be compelled to frequent or support any” religion. Drafted by Thomas Jefferson and guided through the Virginia legislature by James Madison, this historic legislation served as a model for the religious liberty protections enshrined in our Constitution.
The First Amendment prohibits the Government from establishing religion. It protects the right of every person to practice their faith how they choose, to change their faith, or to practice no faith at all, and to do so free from persecution and fear. This religious freedom allows faith to flourish, and our Union is stronger because a vast array of religious communities coexist peacefully with mutual respect for one another. Since the age of Jefferson and Madison, brave women and men of faith have challenged our conscience; today, our Nation continues to be shaped by people of every religion and of no religion, bringing us closer to our founding ideals. As heirs to this proud legacy of liberty, we must remain vigilant in our efforts to safeguard these freedoms.
We must also continue our work to protect religious freedom around the globe. Throughout the world, millions of individuals are subjected to discrimination, abuse, and sanctioned violence simply for exercising their religion or choosing not to claim a faith. Communities are being driven from their ancient homelands because of who they are or how they pray, and in conflict zones, mass displacement has become all too common.
In the face of these challenges, I am proud the United States continues to stand up for the rights of all people to practice their faiths in peace. Promoting religious freedom has always been a key objective of my Administration’s foreign policy because history shows that nations that uphold the rights of their people — including the freedom of religion — are ultimately more just, more peaceful, and more successful. In every country, individuals should be free to choose and live their faith based upon the persuasion of the mind — and of the heart and soul. Today, let us continue our work to protect this tradition and advance the cause of religious freedom worldwide.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim January 16, 2015, as Religious Freedom Day. I call on all Americans to commemorate this day with events and activities that teach us about this critical foundation of our Nation’s liberty, and that show us how we can protect it for future generations at home and around the world.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this fifteenth day of January, in the year of our Lord two thousand fifteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-ninth.
Yea, I know what you’re thinking – that’s just impossible. Well, no it’s not. Not in Florida!
A Florida family has contacted a lawyer after they said they discovered a photo one of their members was being used by the North Miami Beach Police Department in a series of images of black men for target practice, according to television station WTVJ.
“The picture actually has like bullet holes,” Woody Deant told WTVJ in an article published Thursday. “One in my forehead and one in my eye.”
Deant’s sister, who serves in the Florida Army National Guard, said she discovered her brother’s face last month among a set of black male mugshots that were being used for target practice when she attended a shooting range, the station reported. Members of the the North Miami Police Department had been practicing there earlier, she told the station.
The mugshot was 15 years old, according to the family.
“Now I’m being used as a target?” Woody Deant told the station. “I’m not even living that life according to how they portrayed me as. I’m a father. I’m a husband. I’m a career man. I work 9-to-5.”
Police Chief J. Scott Dennis told WTVJ that the practice of using images of actual people is standard. He also denied any evidence of racial profiling, saying that police also have white and Hispanic faces in its inventory.
BBC news is reporting that Selma, the film depicting the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama led by Dr Martin Luther King Jr., will have a screening at the White House.
It is a contender for best picture at next month’s Academy Awards, alongside seven other films including Birdman, Boyhood and Grand Budapest Hotel.
Cast and crew, including director Ava DuVernay, are expected to attend the screening on Friday.
The film picked up just two nominations for the Oscars, the second being a nomination for best original song, Glory, by John Legend and Common.
But British actor David Oyelowo missed out on a best actor citation, for his depiction of Martin Luther King, and Ava DuVernay failed to make the cut for best director.
This is for my one and only Republican friend who swears that Chris Christie is the best thing to happen in New Jersey since sliced bread. Jersey voters beg to differ.
Three-quarters of New Jersey residents believe Gov. Chris Christie has made minor or no real accomplishments to the state since first taking office, according to a new poll.
A majority of residents rate Christie average when stacked about against his predecessors and 75 percent indicated his accomplishments for the state have been minor or minimal, according to the Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind Poll released today. It found only about one-in-five residents, just 19 percent, said the Christie years have been good for the average Garden State citizen.
New Jersey residents are critical of Christie over the state’s economic conditions, with a little more than half – 52 percent – indicating they believe taxes and spending have increased under the administration and 42 percent saying the state’s overall economy has grown worse over the last five years.
“Voters look to what someone has done in the past for insight into what the future may hold. Many in the state don’t believe the economic conditions have improved while Governor Christie has been in office,” said Krista Jenkins, professor of political science and director of PublicMind.
Residents responded similarly when asked to consider the health of other issues facing the state, including its transportation systems, environmental conditions and New Jersey’s cities.
