One Week Later

It’s been a week since the attack in Orlando and much of what’s happened is predictable. Both political parties have rolled out their positions on gun control, and both are very familiar. Democrats want new background checks and to ban sales of guns to anyone on the no-fly or terrorist watch lists. Republicans counter by saying that more people should be carrying guns and that denying anyone their second amendment rights is abhorrent. Further, the man responsible for the massacre wasn’t on any list when he purchased his guns, so changes in the law wouldn’t have stopped his actions.

It’s a tiresome debate, and the more it drags on, the more we will see horrible scenes like the one in Orlando. Remember that there was an armed guard at the door to the Pulse nightclub, and he couldn’t stop Omar Mateen from entering the club. The NRA fantasy is that a nightclub full of armed patrons would have killed Mateen before he could have done damage, but the reality is that it’s likely that far more than 49 people would have died if there was a shootout because most people just aren’t very good shots. I could imagine bullets being sprayed all over the club and more innocent club-goers losing their lives. More guns is not the answer. It’s a punchline.

The most sensible reform would be to know who has guns in this country. Background checks, licenses, and ones that need to be renewed like driver’s licenses, and mandatory safety classes should be the law of the land. More than that, the culture needs to change. This was an attack on gays, plain and simple. It was a terror attack too, but only insofar as Omar Mateen’s personal and religious views were hostile to the LGBTQ community. Despite the positive changes in marriage laws and more widespread acceptance of gay rights, we clearly have more work to do.

As for politics, this past week was a terrible one for Donald Trump, as he acted as though this was a personal referendum on whether he was right that we’d have a terrorist attack on American soil. He also repeated his call to bar all Muslims from coming or returning to this country until…well, he hasn’t said. Polls show his appeal to women, Muslims, Hispanics and African-Americans dropping like a stone. Hillary has rightly been supportive and empathetic, and she’s smart enough to get out of the way when her opponent is imploding.

It’s been a sad week, and one full of national and personal reflection. Can we please not do this anymore?

Report: Orlando Shooter and Wife Texted Each Other During Massacre

In the beginning, Noor Salman, wife of the Orlando shooter, insisted that she had no idea what her husband was up to when he gunned down 49 people at a Pulse night club. Now, reports say the two were communicating via text during the terrorist attack.
The Orlando shooter and his wife exchanged text messages during the Pulse nightclub rampage, a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation told CNN. Around 4 a.m., about two hours after he started the attack and while holed up in a bathroom, Omar Mateen texted his wife, Noor Salman, asking if she’d seen the news, the official said.
At one point, she responded with a text saying that she loved him. Salman also tried calling her husband several times during the standoff, a second law enforcement official said. The timing of her calls came after reports of the attack had emerged, and apparently after she realized her husband might be responsible. He didn’t answer, the official said.

New Report – Police Could Not See Gun When They Killed Tamir Rice

According to a new investigative report, 12 year old Tamir Rice did not have a gun or even a pellet gun in his hand when police pulled up and gunned him down at a recreation center in November 2014.

And the various reports that said Rice was killed  2 to 3 seconds after police arrived on the scene are wrong. According to this new report, the 12 year old boy was killed one second after the police car stopped a few feet away from him.

Tamir Rice did not have enough time to remove his hands from his pockets before being shot, and his hands weren’t visible to the officer, according to the analysis released late Friday night by attorneys for Tamir’s family.

The new report and two others from experts already used by the family are the latest analysis of evidence to be released as a grand jury considerswhether to bring charges against the officers in Tamir’s death. The boy was shot after authorities received a report of a man pointing and waving a gun outside a recreation center in November 2014.

Previous reports concluded that officer Timothy Loehmann shot Tamir within 2 seconds of opening his car door. The new analysis determined it happened even faster, within less than a second, according to the review by California-based shooting reconstruction expert Jesse Wobrock.

11 Year Old Charged With Murder – Kills his 8 Year Old Neighbor

Don’t be silly, he didn’t buy the guy. He got it from his father – another Responsible gun owner!

An 11-year-old boy has been charged with murder after he killed his 8-year-old neighbor, police said, and witnesses say it was because the girl wouldn’t let him see her puppy.

Deputies were called to the neighborhood in White Pine, about 40 miles east of Knoxville, on Saturday night. The boy shot the girl from inside his home with his father’s 12-gauge shotgun, said Jefferson County Sheriff Bud McCoig.
Latasha Dyer told WATE-TV (http://bit.ly/1KWbDPA) her daughter was playing outside when the next-door neighbor asked to see the puppy. McKayla told the boy “no,” and he shot her, Dyer said. A neighbor, Misty Edwards, said her niece was playing with the girl and saw what happened.

“She was a precious little girl. She was a mommy’s girl. No matter how bad of a mood you were in she could always make you smile,” Dyer told the station. “I want her back in my arms.”

Gun Control Australia Calls for Boycott on Travels to America – Video

It’s like anything else you don’t believe in or support – if it goes against your values system, then you hit them in the wallet where it hurts most – you boycott! And that is exactly what Gun Control Australia Director, Samantha Lee, is calling for – ending all unnecessary trips to America until Americans, particularly those in the Republican party and their NRA buddies, realize that their inaction on gun violence is literally killing the nation!

“We have 2.1 million Australians visiting the U.S. every year and over 200,000 expats in America. So I believe we have a duty to respond to this tragedy in the U.S. And the way to do this is have a boycott of non-essential travel to the U.S.”

“Millions of dollars are donated by the [National Rifle Association], particularly to the Republican party [in America] In Australia, we need to be cautious that we also don’t take any donations from the firearms industry, and we need to raise this issue with the U.S.”

Megyn Kelly Interviews Father of Murdered Reporter – Video

Moments after his daughter was murdered on live television for the world to see, Andy Parker, father of WDBJ’s Alison Parker – one of the victims in Wednesday Virginia killings – appeared on Fox News of all places to talk about his daughter and the need for sensible gun laws in this country.

“Next week it isn’t going to be a story anymore,” Mr. Parker said on Fox, “and everybody’s gonna forget it. But mark my words, my mission in life… I’m going to do something, whatever it takes to get gun legislation, to shame people, to shame legislatures into doing something about closing loopholes in background checks and making sure crazy people don’t get guns!”

While Mr. Parker spoke, Kelly just nodded, fully aware that Fox News – being the media mouthpiece of the NRA and the right hand Republican party – will do all they can to continue pushing their usual narrative, that guns don’t kill people and that more guns is the answer!

Reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward were shot and killed on Wednesday while broadcasting and interview in Moneta Virginia.

Bobby Jindal – This is Not The Time to Talk about Guns

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal speaks with the media following a deadly shooting at the Grand Theatre in Lafayette, La., Thursday, July 23, 2015. (AP Photo/Denny Culbert)

Sure Bobby. After all, you are running for president and getting the approval of the NRA and the gun nuts of America is better for you than talking about ways to stop the mass shootings in America, like the latest mass shooting at the Grand Theatre in your state of Louisiana.

Let’s not talk about guns!

“We are less than 24 hours out, we’ve got two families that need to bury their loved ones. We’ve got families waiting for their loved ones to leave the hospital and are praying for their recovery,” Jindal said at a Friday press conference, according to The Hill. “There will be an absolute appropriate time for us to talk about policies and politics, and I’m sure that folks will want to score political points of this tragedy, as they’ve tried to do on previous tragedies.”

Jindal told reporters that he might be more open to talking about the politics surrounding guns at a later time.

“You can ask me these questions in a couple of days. I’m not going anywhere. I’m happy to talk about this, we’re happy to talk about politics, but not here,” he said according to The Hill.

Jeb Bush – White Lives Matter, but BlackLivesMatter is a “Political Slogan” – Video

Since Democratic presidential candidate Martin O’Malley felt the need to apologize for saying “black lives matter, white lives matter, all lives matter” when confronted by a group from the “BlackLivesMatter” movement, his apology has caused much talk and headlines. Jeb Bush is just one of a few presidential candidates urged to emphasize that yes, white lives matter, but BlackLivesMatter is nothing more than a political slogan.

When a reporter asked him to respond to O’Malley’s apology, an apparent irate Jeb Bush is seen rolling his eyes before offering his response.

“We’re so uptight and so politically correct now that we apologize for saying ‘lives matter?'” asked Bush. “Life is precious. It’s a gift from God. I frankly think that it’s one of the most important values that we have. I know in the political context it’s a slogan, I guess. Should he have apologized? No. If he believes that white lives matter, which I hope he does, then he shouldn’t have apologized to a group that seemed to disagree with it. Gosh.”

The annoyed Jeb Bush still doesn’t get it! When week after week black lives are gunned down and beaten and killed by those entrusted with their protection, saying “all lives matter”, although true, minimizes the need to fix an obvious problem between the black or minority community and the police. Yes, we all know white lives matter, because those lives are not being hunted by police the way black ones are, but what’s wrong with admitting that black lives matter too and deserve the same protection as white lives?

Jeeze!

The Race Confronts Race

Racial politics is sometimes like the weather. Everybody complains about it or has an opinion about it, but there’s precious little that we can seemingly do about it. Here we are again, having the same conversation about the same issue and the politicians are crafting their statements and the sociologists are telling us about how the Internet is the problem and the gun enthusiasts are telling us that it’s a mental health issue and there’s a debate about whether this is only a hate crime or is it home-grown terrorism. And then there’s that darned Confederate flag flying over Charleston. Which seems to be causing a bit of angst in the Republican Party.

The race is on and race is now a major part of it. This time, though, it feels different.

Nine African-Americans were killed in their church simply because they were African-Americans. Yes, I know that many people say that Walter Scott and Eric Garner and Michael Brown were killed because they were African-American, but they were also involved in activities that brought them attention from the law. The victims in Charleston were doing no such thing. They were being good citizens, were praying, were welcoming a stranger into their world as many other Americans would. Such a terrible tragedy.

What we know for sure is that the shooter did not like black people, and he said so explicitly. He grew up in a country that’s supposed to be post-racial with a more enlightened group of young people who did not experience the Civil Rights movement or institutional segregation. They’re supposed to be more welcoming, more open, more accepting. We now know about one of the exceptions to that interpretation.

But we are also at the beginning of a presidential election cycle and we need to measure the candidates and potential candidates against their words and actions. The initial reactions were sober and immediate, with quick condemnations and expressions of horror and disbelief. That sentiment soon turned to the issue of why Dylann Roof perpetrated this crime. Many on the right called it an attack on religion. Some said worse things.  President Obama looked anguished and sad when he addressed the news media the day after the killings, and his inclusion of the gun issue showed that he truly regrets not being able to get any kind of meaningful background check legislation through the Congress.

I want to know specifically what the candidates plans are in reaction to this event. They all say that we need to bring the country together, but how will they do this? I understand that I might have to wait a good long time, but now is the moment when we need to push anyone who wants to occupy the Oval Office in 2017 for answers. Specific answers.

Right now we’re asking questions from our homes and places of worship. Next time, we’ll be in the streets.

#GunSense – 5 Year Old Shoots 9 Month Old Baby Brother in the Head

And once again, another killing, sanctioned and approved by the no-regulations-more-guns NRA and the foot soldiers of the NRA, Republican party.

The mother called 911 to say her 5-year-old boy shot his baby brother with a paintball gun.

But it wasn’t a paintball gun. It was a .22-caliber Magnum revolver. And the 9-month-old boy didn’t survive.

Authorities are trying to figure out what led to Monday’s shooting in Elmo, in the northwest corner of Missouri.

“At this point foul play is not suspected, and it appears at this time that the shooting was accidental,” the Nodaway County Sheriff’s Office said.

Sheriff Darren White told CNN affiliate KCTV that the baby was in a playpen when his brother found the gun lying around a bed.

When emergency crews arrived, they found the infant had been shot in the head. The child was flown to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, where he was pronounced dead, the station reported.
