Both Democrats And Republicans Criticize Romney’s Latest Dumb Move

Pundits, politicos and Republican Party stalwarts alike have panned a mid-morning press conference by Republican presidential candidate former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA). Romney’s campaign drew fire overnight for falsely attributing a quote by Egyptian embassy personnel under siege to the Obama administration, then attacking the presidency for “apologizing for our values,” thereby seizing upon the violence in Egypt and Libya to score political points against President Barack Obama.

Rather than use today’s press conference as an opportunity to clear the air and mourn the deaths of U.S. citizens who gave their lives in service to their country, however, the former governor doubled down on his attacks against the president, a maneuver that was criticized even on the right.

Former foreign policy adviser to Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX), Victoria Coates told BuzzFeed, “It’s deeply unfortunate when the circumstance of the statement becomes the story.”

Members of the press were struck by the move, as well. Time magazine’s Mark Halperin said on Twitter that Romney’s attacks were the most “craven + ill-advised move” of the 2012 campaign.

Wall Street Journal columnist and doyenne of DC politics Peggy Noonan opined to Fox News that the nominee isn’t “doing himself any favors” with his handling of the situation.

“When you step forward in the midst of a political environment and start giving statements on something dramatic and violent that has happened, you’re always leaving yourself open to accusations that you are trying to exploit things politically,” she said.

Some Ohio Republicans Think Mitt Romney Killed Osama Bin Laden

Have you heard this one? A new poll conducted by Public Polling Policy in Ohio finds that there are some people who think Mitt Romney was the one that killed Osama Bin Laden. Mitt Romney, the Republican who held no political office at the time Bin Laden was captured and killed, is being credited for getting the mastermind of the September 11th attacks.

When the average voter was asked who should get the credit for killing Osama, 63% said the President should, 6% said Romney and 31% had no clue.

The results were even more unbelievable when Republicans answered the question. 15% of Republicans credited Mitt Romney for getting Osama Bin Laden and 47% couldn’t decide. Only 38% of Ohio Republicans knew that President Obama made the final decision that led to Osama’s death, while 62% (15% said Romney and 47% didn’t know) got the answer wrong.

Makes you wonder where these people are getting their information… oh, never mind. They get their news from Fox News.

Mitt Romney Flips Again – Promises To Repeal ObamaCare “In Its Entirety”

Sunday: Mitt Romney went on Meet The Press and told the nation that he liked parts of ObamaCare. He reassured the American people that he will not repeal the entire bill because there are some parts he agreed with. Mr. Romney specifically mentioned the pre-existing conditions provision in ObamaCare, where insurance companies are required to provide insurance coverage to everyone no matter what their health history is. This, Mr. Romney said, was good policy and would remain in his version of healthcare.

Later on Sunday: Moments after Romney made his new position known, his campaign issued a statement basically saying, “there he go again!” The campaign explained that what Romney said on Meet The Press was incorrect, and reclaimed a previous position Romney held to repeal all of ObamaCare.

Monday: Romney backtracks on the new position he revealed on Meet The Press. On Monday, Romney bowed to his campaign and said in a radio interview that he will in fact, repeal all of ObamaCare in its entirety.

Some leader, huh? This is the man who Republicans have tapped to be the next leader of the free world, but he cannot stand up in opposition of his own campaign.

President Obama Outraises Mitt Romney in August

For the first time in five months, the millions of Americans supporting President Obama’s re-election beat out the handful of billionaires trying to buy or steal the presidency for Mitt Romney. CNN reports;

– President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign and supporting committees brought in more than $114 million last month – the first time the incumbent has outraised his opponent, Gov. Mitt Romney, since April.

Obama’s Campaign Manager Jim Messina announced the figure for August late Sunday night.

Romney’s campaign brought in $111 million last month.

But for three months in a row – June, July, August – Romney’s camp brought in more than $100 million, with $106 million in June and $101 million in July.

“No celebrating, because they’re going to have an even bigger September. But now we know we can match them, doing this our way,” tweeted the Obama campaign.

August’s fundraising statistics mark a drastic improvement for the Obama campaign.

Etch-A-Sketch Moment – Romney Now Says He Will Not Repeal All Of ObamaCare

Mitt Romney ran his entire campaign on two things: 1. Lies and 2. The promise to “repeal ObamaCare” in its entirety. But Sunday on Meet The Press, Romney pulled out an etch-a-sketch and claimed a completely new position on what he will do as president on Barack Obama’s signature domestic policy.

Asked about his plans for healthcare, Romney answered;

“I’m not getting rid of all of health care reform. Of course there are a number of things that I like in health care reform that I’m going to put in place,” he said on NBC’s “Meet The Press. “One is to make sure that those with pre-existing conditions can get coverage. Two is to assure that the marketplace allows for individuals to have policies that cover their family up to whatever age they might like.”

What’s amazing about this particular flip-flop is the fact that his Republican/Teaparty base is extremely passionate about getting rid of healthcare. Repealing Obamacare was their rallying cry in the Republican primaries and their hate for the bill was the foundation of the Teaparty movement in 2009 when Town-hall meetings erupted in violence.  Anyone expecting to get the vote of these Republicans had to promise that getting rid of ObamaCare would be their number one priority, and that promise allowed Republicans to take over the House of Representatives in 2010. Romney too made that promise and now he’s changing positions… again.

What would the Teaparty/Republican say now that their chosen one is abandoning their trust? Would they disown their candidate for breaking his promise or would they disown their calls for repeal and fall in line with their flip-flopping leader?

Only time will t…. wait a minute! There is another change in Romney’s position on healthcare. It seems that Romney will repeal healthcare after-all. Just moments after Romney made his new position known on Meet The Press, his campaign put out a statement essentially saying that Romney did not know what he was talking about on the show. The campaign now claims that Romney will indeed repeal all of ObamaCare.

Here’s the part report:

In reference to how Romney would deal with those with preexisting conditions and young adults who want to remain on their parents’ plans, a Romney aide responded that there had been no change in Romney’s position and that “in a competitive environment, the marketplace will make available plans that include coverage for what there is demand for. He was not proposing a federal mandate to require insurance plans to offer those particular features.”

We’ll call this one a flip-flop flop. Carry on folks, this is just another day in the life of the Romney campaign.

Dr. Justin Frank Explains – Mormonism Makes It Easy For Romney To Lie

It seems that lying is now an acceptable part of politics. Yes, we know that lying and politics sometimes go hand in hand, but yesterday’s politicians at least tried to minimize the lies and appear truthful. But something changed especially in this year’s presidential election where lying is not only the norm, it is also encouraged by a complacent “news” media.

This change as far as we can tell, dates back to Mitt Romney and the very first political ad he ran against Barack Obama. The good people of America was shocked to the core when they saw Romney’s ad willfully misquoting the president. In the ad, President Obama is heard saying, “if we keep talking about the economy we are going to lose.” Romney’s ad intentionally failed to explain that Obama was quoting something John McCain said in the 2008 presidential election, leaving the impression that the words originated from Mr. Obama. When this was pointed out to the Romney campaign, they just shrugged off the lie as nothing and continued running the ad.

It quickly went downhill from there, as just about every ad the Romney campaign put out contained gross exaggerations, numerous misstatements and in many cases, straight-up lies.

In an effort to figure out why lying seems so natural for Mitt Romney, Justin Frank M.D concluded that Romney’s religion, Mormonism, plays a vital role. Dr. Frank wrote, “this pattern of lying and not acknowledging it, even when confronted directly, has persisted and led me to look for other sources of Romney’s behavior and of his clear comfort with continuing it. I think much of this comfort stems from his Mormon faith.”

Dr. Frank wrote of another lie Mitt Romney told on many occasions, even after he was told what the truth really was. That lie came from a book written by Norm Scheiber called The Escape Artists. Romney misquoted a passage in the book and said that “President Obama intentionally tanked the economy” to pursue healthcare reform. Even after the book’s author told Romney that he was lying and misquoted the passage, Romney continued the lie anyway.

Dr. Frank explains;

“Scheiber wrote on May 21, 2012, that Romney had the wrong takeaway from the book. He quoted Romney as having said, “In this book, they point out that they said the American people will forget how long this recovery took. So that means that when they went into this knowing that when they passed Obamacare, it was going to make life harder for the American people.”

That is not what Scheiber wrote, though he did write that the Obama Administration could have done more to help create jobs by pushing for a bigger stimulus package. He never said Obama knew that he was sacrificing the economy to pursue a pet project.

What is not dramatic is that Romney did not recant his position after Scheiber detailed what the book actually said three days later. But what is dramatic is what happened two weeks later, on June 6, when Romney said the same thing again — albeit with slight differences. Romney said the Obama Administration “knowingly slowed down our recovery in order to put in place Obamacare, which they wanted and they considered historic but the American people did not want or consider historic.”

So on June 7, Scheiber again had to repeat the actual words from his book. Rachel Maddow, on her MSNBC program, asked why Romney continues to lie in the face of evidence to the contrary. She said that in the case of Solyndra, when Romney lied explicitly about where the money went, he was “nailed for telling that lie” about Solyndra’s steering money to the Obama Administration’s friends and family. The Chicago Tribune headline “Romney Hits the Sauce Again” implied that you can be a teetotaler and still behave with the certainty of a drunk.

I found myself discussing this situation with several colleagues, and we agreed that Romney doesn’t lie. Let me repeat: Mitt Romney doesn’t lie. He is telling the truth as he sees it — and truth it is, the facts notwithstanding. This is not simply a case of Hamlet arguing about point of view, saying, “For there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” This is about a conflict between evidence and faith. There is a long tradition in the Mormon belief system in which evidence takes second place to faith. Examples abound, as when two Mormon elders who were questioned about the inconsistency in passages from the Book of Mormon said, “We know the Book of Mormon is true and that it contains the Word of God even in the face of evidence that appears contradictory,” according to The Mormon Missionaries by former Mormon Janice Hutchison. Thus there are no lies, only faith-based certainty that translates as truth for which no apology is needed, since what was said was not a lie.”

Weekly Presidential Address – Coming Together on September 11th

President Obama marks the eleventh anniversary of the September 11th attacks by remembering the innocent lives lost, and honoring the first responders and men and women in uniform who have served and sacrificed to keep our country safe.

In the difficult years following the attacks, the United States has come back stronger as a nation, decimated the leadership of al-Qaeda, ensured that Osama bin Laden will never attack America again, and strengthened our alliances across the world.

He Was Very Conservative, and His Girlfriend was Liberal. He Felt He Had to kill her

A Florida man “obsessed with Fox News and the Republican party” felt that his girlfriend was too “liberal” — so he decided he had to kill her.

Police arrested David Kappheim, of Lake Park, on Saturday after the 60-year-old threatened a woman’s life because of her supposed political affiliation, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The report recounts several incidents in which Kappheim allegedly arrived “stark naked” at the home of his girlfriend’s friend, choked his girlfriend and told her that he would “kill her and burn her home,” thePalm Beach Post reports.

Kappheim explained to a sheriff’s deputy, “He was very conservative, and his girlfriend was liberal and he felt he was going to have kill her,” according to the arrest affidavit, according to WPTV.

Republican Voter Suppression Efforts Stopped In Ohio

After previously trying to restrict early voting, Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted (R) today reversed course on his decision to block county boards of elections from setting their own early voting hours in the days leading up to the November election.

Last month, Husted and Ohio Republicans led an effort to limit early voting hours in Democratic counties, including those with major cities like Columbus and Cleveland, while expanding early voting in Republican counties. After the ensuing uproar, Husted moved to restrict voting hours across the state, only to have his cuts to early voting restored by a federal court.

Husted responded to the ruling by refusing to comply with the court order. Expanding voting hours, he claimed in Directive 2012-40, will “only serve to confuse voters.” Therefore, the directive read, he was “prohibit[ing] county boards of elections from determining hours for the Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday before the election.” The move led Judge Peter Economus to set a hearing for September 13: “The Court ORDERS that Defendant Secretary of State Jon Husted personally attend the hearing,” his release read.

Facing a direct court order, Husted has chosen instead to back down. This afternoon, Husted’s office released Directive 2012-42 with a brief message: “Directive 2012-40 is hereby rescinded.” As a result, county boards of elections will now be allowed to set their own hours, pending Husted’s appeal of the Obama for America v. Husted decision.
