CENTRAL PARK 5

I’m certain many of you remember the Central Park West Jogger case in New York. I sure do. “Wilding” and “wolfpack”  were words used the media used to describe it. In 1990 five Black and Latino teens — Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, Antron McCray and Kharey Wise — were wrongfully convicted of raping, sodomizing and brutally beating a white woman who was jogging in Central Park shortly after 9 p.m. on April 19, 1989. They spent from six to 13 years in prison for a crime they did not commit. Keeping up with the trial I was shocked at how it was allowed to continue on with no direct evidence or even circumstantial evidence that could put those boys at the scene of the crime.

In 2002, their convictions were overturned, and they were acquitted following a confession by the actual rapist, Matias Reyes, a murderer and serial rapist whose DNA actually matched the evidence found on the victim’s clothing, unlike none, and I repeat NONE, of the DNA samples taken from any of the five following the NYPD’s unjustifiably botched up, bullet hole-ridden investigation of the case. It was a horrific crime, that I as a female and a fellow human being felt to the core of my soul…but Kevin, Yusef, Raymond, Antron and Kharey hadn’t done it.

After being exonerated, the young men filed a federal lawsuit for $250 million that claimed, amongst other things, that they were railroaded, maliciously prosecuted, wrongfully imprisoned and that their civil rights had been violated.  But instead of exacting justice, the lawsuit has caused the five to be victimized a second time by past   and by the present Bloomberg administration who refuse to acknowledge the Five’s proven innocence and contend that the NYPD and the District Attorney’s office did nothing wrong in arresting the teens, coercing confessions from them and prosecuting them back in 1990.

For the last 10 years, requests for records and documents from the case have been met with statements such as the  files cannot be located or are too old and deteriorated to read. This bull has resulted in major time and money wasted by the prosecutor’s office. It is for these reasons that U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald Ellis, who presently presides over the case regarding the lawsuit has now set specific deadlines for records to be presented. The bureaucracy is suffocating.

You would think Bloomberg would want to go out on a good note with a city that has made him a billionaire. You know, show us and other large city municipalities what an administration looks like when its wants to improve relations with its citizens by rectifying once and for all, the sloppy crudeness in which this case was handled in the bygone era of the 90’s. But I suppose that kind of thinking opens up way to many closets hiding way too many skeletons. This may be 2013, but we’re still a long way from initiating change to some things that are in desperate need of it.

The pressure is on though, with the broadcast of a documentary on the case by filmmaker Ken Burns. It airs on PBS on April 16.

The film ‘The Central Park Five’, opens with an audio of  Reyes describing how he savagely beat and raped the jogger late that  night in 1989, in New York’s Central Park. Starting the film off with that horrible, truthful preface it then proceeds with the story of how five totally individuals, unrelated to Reyes and unrelated to any part of the incident other than being in the park that day, were picked up, held and grilled for 24 hours and ended up being convicted for one of the most heinous crimes in New York City’s history.

Two Ohio School Football Stars Found Guilty Of Rape

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — Two high school football stars were found guilty on Sunday of raping a 16-year-old girl last August, in a case that drew wide attention for the way social media spurred the initial prosecution and later helped galvanize national outrage over the episode. The town’s obsession over its football team, many said, had shielded other teenagers who did little or nothing to protect the girl.

One football player, Trent Mays, 17, who had been a quarterback on the powerhouse Steubenville High School football team, was sentenced to serve at least two years in the state juvenile system, while the other, Ma’lik Richmond, 16, who played wide receiver, was sentenced to serve at least one year. Both could end up in juvenile jail until they are 21, at the discretion of the state Department of Youth Services. Mr. Mays’ minimum sentence is twice as long as Mr. Richmond’s because he was found guilty of two different charges.

After Judge Thomas Lipps read his decision, both boys broke down and sobbed. Mr. Richmond turned to his lawyer, Walter Madison, and said, “My life is over.”

Both Mr. Mays and Mr. Richmond apologized to the victim and her family. Mr. Richmond walked over to where they were sitting and said, “I had not intended to do anything like this. I’m sorry to put you through this,” before he broke down, unable to speak any more, and embraced a court officer.

Zerlina Maxwell Gets Death Threats And Rape Threats From Fox Viewers

Better watch what you say on Fox News. Zerlina Maxwell is now getting it first hand as the vile and hate from the Fox faithful comes her way.

What was Zerlina’s mistake? She went on Fox’s Hannity show and spoke the truth. She had the nerve to say that arming women with a gun to prevent rape or blaming women who are rape victims is not the way to begin solving the problem.

Zerlina, who is also a rape survivor, expressed that changing the focus to the men committing these acts, should be an important part of the discussion. On the Fox show, Zerlina said this;

The entire conversation is wrong. I don’t want anybody to be telling women anything. I don’t want men to be telling me what to wear how to act, not to drink, and I don’t honestly want you to be telling me that I needed a gun in order to prevent my rape.

Well of course, that was enough to cause some viewers to send Zerlina these tweets:

On Monday, Zerlina went on MSNBC’s The Ed Show and vowed to continue fighting to bring the perpetrators of these crimes to the limelight. “I’m certainly taking steps to protect my emotional health, but I will not be quiet because I refuse to be bullied into silence.”

New York Politician Fantasized About Sleeping With A Fourteen Year Old Girl

Pervy Assemblyman Vito Lopez found a 14-year-old intern so sexy that he fantasized aloud about living in a state where it was legal to sleep with underage girls, a source told the Daily News.

After ogling the girl, the 71-year-old Brooklyn Democrat relayed his twisted lament over New York’s statutory rape laws to least one person from his district office, the source said.

The creepy comment comes to light days after the Daily News revealed that the mother of a Lopez staffer called the police after he told the staffer she should dress sexier — like the teenage intern.

“It just gets more and more horrifying with this guy,” said one insider. “God only knows what’s inside that (state ethics commission) report” on Lopez.

Neither Lopez nor his lawyer returned messages seeking comments. A spokesman for the state ethics commission declined to comment.

The 14-year-old girl is the daughter of Brooklyn Judge Pamela Fisher, whom Lopez helped get elected.

In New York, it’s second-degree rape punishable by up to seven years in prison for anyone 18 or older to have sex with someone under 15 — even if it’s consensual. Anyone at least 21 who has sex with someone under the age of 17 is guilty of third-degree rape, punishable by up to four years in prison.

Mitt Romney Endorses Richard Mourdock – Who Is Richard Mourdock? Video

We’re still trying to figure out who Mitt Romney is. With all his shifting positions moving from severely conservative to endorsing the president’s foreign policies, it is fair to say that Mitt Romney is still trying to figure out Mitt Romney.

But when Mitt Romney makes an official endorsement, it is a good indication of what Mitt Romney believes and stands for.

Mitt Romney officially endorsed Richard Mourdock. Richard Mourdock thinks that a pregnancy that results from rape is God’s doing.

Mitt Romney Now In Favor Of Abortion For Rape Victims

Another Etch-a-Sketch moment for the Romney journey came today in this newly released CBS interview with the Republican presidential nominee (as of now, he’s still a Republican). After being against all forms of abortions during earlier Republican primaries, Mitt Romney has since changed his position by now claiming to support abortions in the case of rape or incest.

Here’s an example.

In his first run for president in 2008, Romney was asked by CNN’s Anderson Cooper if “Roe v. Wade was overturned and Congress passed a ban on abortions, would you sign it?” The question was not a specific question, it did not mention rape or incest, in fact, it was a very general question – would you sign a bill banning abortions, all abortions in general.

Here’s Romney’s answer:

“We should overturn Roe v Wade and return these issues to the states. I would welcome a circumstance where there were such a consensus in this country that we say we don’t want to have abortions in this country… at all… period! That would be delightful! I’d be delighted to sign that bill.”

But that was then. This is now.

“My position has been clear throughout this campaign. I’m in favor of abortion being legal in the case of rape and incest, and the health and life of the mother….This is a matter in the courts, it’s been settled for some time in the courts.”

The Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan, Todd Akin Connection

The Republicans would love for you to believe that what Todd Akin said was just something that happened in his brief moment of  insanity. That Todd had a moment, a very bad and unfortunate moment.

But a quick check of the Congressional voting record of other Republicans found that Mr. Legitimate Rape’s comment was not only accepted by the Republican base, Congressional Republicans like Paul Ryan even tried to create laws based on Akin’s belief.

In fact, over the past decade in Congress, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) has co-sponsored 32 abortion-related bills that Akin has also sponsored or co-sponsored. Here are a few anti-choice bills that both Akin and Cantor supported:

HR 3: The 2011 No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, first introduced in 2011, included language about “forcible rape” in its early versions that set a dangerous precedent for Republican attempts to narrow the definition of “legitimate” forms of sexual assault.

HR 5276: The Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act of 2010 would require doctors to describe “the pain experienced by the unborn child” to women seeking an abortion.

HR 649: The 2009 Ultrasound Informed Consent Act sought to force women to look at an ultrasound of their fetus before being allowed to continue with their decision to have an abortion.

HR 2752: Akin was the primary sponsor of the Parents Right to Know Act of 2009, which sought to strip funding for health clinics like Planned Parenthood that provide FDA-approved contraceptives to minors without first obtaining parental consent.

Akin’s anti-abortions views are not, in fact, too radical for the top Republican in the House. Akin’s fellow Republicans want to claim they disagree with his offensive views behind the GOP’s stance toward women’s health, but their voting records say differently.

Todd Akin Attacks Mitt Romney – Run Your Race, I’ll Run Mine

Appearing on Sean Hannity’s radio program for the second time in as many days, Missouri Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin attacked the GOP’s presidential candidateMitt Romney, for joining a chorus of Republicans asking him to withdraw from the race. Akin said that Romney had blown the controversy out of proportion and implied that he had done so for his own political gain.

Hannity asked Akin, given the number of prominent Republican politicians asking Akin to drop out including Romney, if he is even pausing to consider leaving the Senate race in Missouri.

“Let me ask you this,” Akin began. “If you were in Romney’s position, don’t you think that he may have bid this thing up and made a bigger deal about it than he needed to?”

“Why couldn’t he run his race and I run mine,” asked Akin. “If things really look like they’re getting in trouble in Missouri than maybe — but he has just assumed.”

Akin went on to cite a Public Policy Polling flash poll from last night which showed him still leading Sen. Clair McCaskill even amid this controversy. Hannity pointed out that that particular poll sampled 9 points more Republicans than Democrats and it was a poor indicator.

Later in the interview, Akin said that he was contacted by Republican vice presidential candidatePaul Ryan who, according to reports, also asked Akin to consider dropping out.

New Poll Has Todd Akin Leading Claire McCaskill In Missouri

Maybe it’s too soon to take this poll. And maybe we would love to think that the people of Missouri are smarter than this. Never the less, a new poll from Public Policy Polling is reporting that even after the false and offensive comments on rape from Todd Akin, he is still leading Claire McCaskill for the Senate race.

Public Policy Polling found that “Missouri voters strongly disagree with the comments Todd Akin made about abortion over the weekend, but it hasn’t moved the numbers a whole lot in the Senate race. Akin leads Claire McCaskill by a single point, 44-43. That’s basically identical to our last poll of the contest in late May, which found Akin ahead by a 45-44 spread.

“It’s not that Missouri voters are ok with or supportive of Akin’s comments. 75% of voters, including even 64% of Republicans, say they were inappropriate to only 9% who consider them to have been appropriate. 79% of voters say they disagree with what Akin said, including 65% who express ‘strong’ disagreement with him. 51% of GOP voters say they strongly disagree with him.”

We can only hope the people of Missouri are smarter than this poll indicates. We can only hope that taking this poll 24 hours after Akin’s infamous statement is too soon to gauge Missouri’s voters on their preference for November. With just about everyone – from Democrats to Independents to Republicans – asking Akin to withdraw from the Senate race, this poll may not even matter.

Let’s wait and see what happens in the next 24 hours. If Akin withdraws his name, the deadline is today at 5PM.

President Obama Responds To Republican’s War On Women – “Rape Is Rape”

President Obama on Monday called Rep. Todd Akin’s remarks about rape “offensive” and sought to tie the Republican Senate candidate to the GOP presidential ticket.

“Rape is rape,” Obama said at a White House press briefing. He called Akin’s comments “way out there.”

Defining rape, he said, “doesn’t make sense to the American people and doesn’t make sense to me.”

“What I think these comments do underscore is why we shouldn’t have a bunch of politicians, the majority of which are men, making decision that affect health of women,” Obama said.

The Obama campaign said Ryan supported a constitutional amendment that would ban abortion in all instances, including in the case of rape. It also said Ryan, who opposes abortion except in cases where the mother’s life is in danger, had worked with Akin on tough anti-abortion rights legislation.

“The underlying notion that we should be making decisions on behalf of women for their healthcare decisions … that is a significant difference in approach between me and the other party,” Obama said.

Republican Senate Candidate – “Pregnancy From Rape Is Rare” – Video

Todd Akin, one of the darlings of the Teaparty, is running for Senate representing Missouri. His views on women’s rights have always raised eyebrows and that could explain why his Democratic opponent Claire McCaskill actually donated to his campaign in the Republican primary. Well it would seem Mrs. McCaskill’s donations were well made as her Republican challenger is putting his foot in his mouth again.

A new video has come forward with the help of a Democratic super PAC called American Bridge. In the video (shown below), Mr. Akin is furthering his idea that pregnancy from rape is really not a big deal. In fact he says, it is quite rare!

His Democratic opponent McCaskill had this to say – “It is beyond comprehension that someone can be so ignorant about the emotional and physical trauma brought on by rape.”

And of course Mitt Romney is distancing himself from Mr. Akin’s statement. His campaign quickly put out a statement miraculously saying that under a Romney/Ryan administration, they would not force a woman to have her raper’s baby. From the statement, “Governor Romney and Congressman Ryan disagree with Mr. Akin’s statement, and a Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape.”

We’ll  call that statement from the Romney campaign an Etch-A-Sketch moment, as Romney is on record opposing all abortions. He’s even on record supporting a Personhood bill that would make some female contraception illegal. Here’s a Fact Sheet on Romney’s support of the Personhood Amendment;

So-called “personhood” legislation is another example of government going too far. By defining a fertilized human egg to be a legal person, so-called “personhood” measures could allow the government to intrude into the private doctor-patient relationship, and could criminalize everything from common forms of birth control to IVF.

So-called “personhood” amendments are so far out of the mainstream, they have even been rejected by voters in Mississippi – the most conservative state according to Gallup – by a 16-point margin.

Mitt Romney has strongly supported “personhood” measures since they were introduced several years ago. His position is clear and far outside the mainstream as well as a serious threat to women’s health.

Here is Mr. Atkins’ statement that’s causing Romney to shake his Etch-A-Sketch. Take it away Mr. Akin…

High-Ranking Member of the Teaparty Accused of Kidnapping and Rape

So this must be what they mean when they engage in the war on women. Here is one of the high-ranking members of the Teaparty, behaving rather badly. His actions cannot be considered as having tea with his victim… no… it’s more like kidnap and rape.

His name is Michael John Kobulnicky, the public relations director for the San Diego Tea Party, and this is his contribution to the War on Women;

According to East County Magazine, Michael John Kobulnicky is accused of offering a woman a ride on February 25, but instead of taking her home, he drove to secluded island, pulled the victim out of the vehicle, sexually assaulted her, and left her in the sand. San Diego Police Lt. Andra Brown said, “He dragged her out of the car and sexually assaulted her pretty brutally.”

East County Magazine reports:

“He dragged her out of the car and sexually assaulted her pretty brutally,” San Diego Police Lt. Andra Brown told ECM news partner 10 News in late February, shortly after the February 25 assault occurred…

After Kobulnicky’s arrest, the San Diego Tea Party issued a statement indicating that Kobulnicky took leave the group in January for personal reasons and had not been in touch since then, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. He has been removed from his position while the legal process runs its course, the statement said, adding that “”Our hearts and our thoughts go out to the victim.”

…According to his website, Kobulnicky supports Christian values, is a father of five sons, and is co-founder and president of the National Council of Americans, Inc, a nonprofit that helps youths.

…He is charged with rape, kidnapping, and forcible sex with a foreign object. Evidence includes surveillance video shot at a local convenience store shortly before the kidnapping occurred. Kobulnicky is being held without bail pending arraignment on Monday.
