“This is the moment you were made for, commenters. We need you to get out there, and for once in your lives, focus your indiscriminate rage in a useful direction. Seize your moment, my lovely trolls, turn on caps lock and fly, my pretties!”
Those were the words of John Oliver, host of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” on Sunday, charging up his audience in a raged commentary on Net Neutrality and the FCC’s plan to allow big telecommunication companies like AT&T and Verizon to charge online websites a fee to use a faster lines to deliver their content.
After Oliver’s call for action, the FCC commenting site was overwhelmed, as users left 3 times the amount of comments the site normally receives, some 3,000 comments from Monday into Tuesday.
The FCC tweeted on Monday that it was “experiencing technical difficulties with our comment system due to heavy traffic,” without elaborating. A spokeswoman for the agency said Tuesday it’s not clear if the disruption was due to the Oliver show.
The FCC’s comments portal is working again Tuesday.
It has been no surprise that Fox News and the Republicans are against of the release of the American soldier kept prisoner by the Taliban for five years. But attacking the soldier’s father because he grew his beard in support of his captured son?
“You wonder why, given the fact that a couple of years ago they had already discounted him as a deserter, why would the president of the United States embrace his family in the Rose Garden?” Fox News host Steve Doocy opined.
Co-host Brian Kilmeade accused Bowe Bergdahl’s father, Robert Bergdahl, of making “some anti-American tweets and statements” because he had said he was working to free the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, and that “God will repay the death of every Afghan child.”
“Really?” Kilmeade asked. “I mean, he says he was growing his beard because his son was in captivity. Well, your son’s out now. So if you really don’t — no longer look like a member of the Taliban, you don’t have to look like a member of the Taliban. Are you out of razors?”
So you’re still wondering if Hillary Clinton is running for president in 2016? Well you’re probably the only one still wondering.
The former Secretary of State has weighed in on many issues concerning today’s version of American politics, and the decision by President Obama to oversee the release of an American soldier captured by the Taliban in Afghanistan prompted a response from the next American president, Hillary Clinton. 🙂
Speaking at an event hosted by the Denver Post, Hillary Clinton defended the president’s decision.
“This young man, whatever the circumstances, was an American citizen — is an American citizen — was serving in our military,” Clinton said Monday evening, according to the Associated Press. “The idea that you really care for your own citizens and particularly those in uniform, I think is a very noble one.”
Needless to say, Republicans are trying to use the release of this American prisoner as another false issue to attack the President on. It is obviously their position that Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl should have remain captive by the Taliban in Afghanistan. You would think that bringing home prisoner of war, an American soldier who went to fight for this country would have been a good thing, but not with these republicans.
Cannabis clubs in San Jose are offering free pot and discounts to patients who go to the polls Tuesday and vote in several contested races.
The Silicon Valley Cannabis Coalition is organizing the “Weed for Votes” program as an effort to increase voter turnout at Tuesday’s election.
“We have a huge opportunity to make a large impact in who runs San Jose,” coalition director John Lee said in a statement. “Although we may not have regulations on the June ballot, insuring the right politicians are elected is even more important.”
Donald sterling recently made news for telling his girlfriend not to bring black people to his basketball games. The owner of the Clippers was quickly rebuked by the NBA find, and is now being forced to sell his team.
Last Sunday, Sterling, known now for his racist statements and actions against minority, went to Zion Missionary Baptist Church – a predominantly black church in South Los Angeles. The invitation came from the pastor of the church and reports say Sterling was warmly welcomed by the congregation.
When asked what he thought of the service, Sterling said it was “beautiful.”
Although God works miracles, converting this lifetime racist may be a lost cause.
Now I’m not sure what Chris Hayes is trying to accomplish here, maybe he wants to be known as an impartial reporter or someone who has no allegiance to any one group or party. Maybe he wants to be impartial. And although an impartial reporter is something to be admired, impartial reporters are a dying breed in today’s political landscape, and they are dying because most of this country have already picked a side and are prepared to defend that side to the end. Impartiality unfortunately, has no audience here.
If you read this blog often, you have already realized that I, like the rest of the nation, have picked a side. So imagine my surprise when Chris Hayes of MSNBC brought on a Republican and a former White House employee on his show, to argue the constitutionality of a president deciding to go off on his own and do stuff without the okay of Congress.
In this particular case, the group discussed the recent decision by President Obama to “negotiate” the release of a United States prisoner, Bowe Bergdahl
Of course, Republicans all argue that the US prisoner should stay in captivity. Amazingly, they used the Sunday morning networks to complain that the United States should not have released five Gitmo prisoners to get the Taliban to release one US soldier. They were all livid! How dare the president make such a decision?
Chris brought on Republican Senator Jason Chaffetz to plead the Republican’s case. But Michael Gottlieb, the former White House Presidential Special Assistant, was making more of a case that the president made the right decision in acting swiftly to secure the release the captured soldier. That is when Chris Hayes pulled out a recording for the President denouncing George Bush when Bush acted alone on certain occasions.
At the end of the recording, the Republican’s face lit up as he happily applauded Chris Hayes and MSNBC for beating Fox News to this bit of ammunition against the President.
Prince Joshua Avitto, 6, has died, and his 7-year-old friend Mikayla Capers is in critical condition, after being attacked in an elevator in New York City.
It was almost 6 p.m. on Sunday, and the children had gone down in the elevator of an apartment building in the East New York section of Brooklyn, N.Y., in search of some ice cream.
They never made it out.
Six-year-old Prince Joshua Avitto, affectionately known as “P.J.,” was found in the elevator, while 7-year-old Mikayla Capers was found just outside the elevator, the Daily News reports.
According to the news site, the culprit, who is still on the run, is believed to be a heavyset African-American male in his 20s. He reportedly stabbed the children in their torsos after telling them to “shut up” and then ran off.
Families and friends of the children are grappling with the senseless crime.
“He took my pride and joy away,” P.J.’s father, Nicholas Avitto, told the Daily News. Avitto expressed sorrow that he had not given his son a kiss that day. “I’m devastated. I’m beyond comprehension. I’m trying to understand how God works. My son is gone. That was the light of my life.”
P.J. would have turned 7 in just a couple of days.
Mikayla’s family also expressed their horror and disbelief that this could happen to the two small children. “This don’t make no sense. This is kids. You don’t do this to kids,” her mother, Sherina Capers, 21, told the Daily News. “They went to go get an icy and they never made it downstairs.”
The attack comes days after the Friday-night fatal stabbing of Long Island University freshman Tanaya Grant in the same neighborhood. According to the Daily News, authorities are not ruling out a possible connection between the two crimes.
Here’s more from our Constitution loving “Patriots” on the right. Hanging an effigy of the president from a bridge on Interstate 70 in Missouri, with what authorities thought was a bomb attached to it.
It’s what they do. No matter what the conversation is, these people always try to bring it back to Benghazi.
What makes the story interesting though, is what happened at Fox News when Laura Ingraham, one of the guests on the Fox Sundays talk show, managed to infuse Benghazi in a conversation about President Obama’s West Point speech. Making everything about Benghazi is a normal procedure at the Fox News network. But this time, it seems that even those at Fox were tired of the Benghazi bottom line to every conversation. And when Ingraham brought it up, she was quickly laughed at.
“The idea that the president goes to West Point and says ‘Look, we’ve never been stronger relative to the rest of the world’ — I’m sorry, that doesn’t even pass the straight-face test,” Ingraham said. “Just on an economic front, forget our declining influence across the globe. So I thought it was a very odd speech and it was not well received, and that didn’t surprise me at all given its tenor and its tone.”
After another guest on the show pointed out that President Obama did the two most important things required of any president, that is, protecting the nation and keeping us from unnecessary war, Laura Ingraham could not let that one slide. She could not see or hear President Obama get any credit for anything. And that is when the Benghazi comparison came out.
“We didn’t protect the Benghazi diplomatic mission on 9/11/12. We kind of failed on that regard, don’t you think, Bob?” she said. “That is the country.”
“Well, you are underscoring my point that this will never go away, at least with you,” Woodward said, drawing laughter from the panelists.
Yet again, another story featuring Justin Bieber and racism.
In the video, posted to TMZ.com, the pop star, then 15, asks: “Why are black people afraid of chain saws?”
He answers his own question: “Run n*****, n*****, n*****, n*****,” he says, imitating the sound of a chain saw. Then he laughs.
TMZ reported it got the video four years ago but decided against posting it then because of Bieber’s age and because he “immediately told his friends what he did was stupid.” It was reportedly shot backstage at a promotional event.
“As a young man, I didn’t understand the power of certain words and how they can hurt. I thought it was OK to repeat hurtful words and jokes, but didn’t realize at the time that it wasn’t funny and that in fact my actions were continuing the ignorance,” Bieber, now 20, said in a statement.
He added: “I take my friendships with people of all cultures very seriously and I apologize for offending or hurting anyone with my childish and inexcusable mistake. I was a kid then and I am a man now who knows my responsibility to the world and to not make that mistake again.”
Emmy-winning actress Ann B. Davis, who became the country’s favorite and most famous housekeeper as the devoted Alice Nelson of “The Brady Bunch,” died Sunday at a San Antonio hospital. She was 88.
Bexar County, Texas, medical examiner’s investigator Sara Horne said Davis died Sunday morning at University Hospital. Horne said no cause of death was available and that an autopsy was planned Monday
The chances are, if you are reading this, you have been to your GP, had a blood test and been told to reduce your cholesterol. If that’s not you, it might be someone you know – as about 60 per cent of the British population have blood cholesterol levels that increase the risk of heart disease.
The reason you’ve been told to get your levels down is to reduce that risk. So what now?
Last week in You magazine, we revealed how certain foods can lower cholesterol, with exclusive extracts from the first recipe book to combine them into a diet which could transform your health.
Dr Laura Carr and Ian Marber have written a book, Eat Your Way To Lower Cholesterol, published by Orion
This week, we explain exactly how much of each ingredient you need to eat, alongside more delicious meals for the whole family.
It is important to realize that although you need to know what your cholesterol level is, numbers are not everything. The risk of heart disease depends on a number of factors that also include genetic predisposition, smoking cigarettes, diabetes, high blood pressure, lack of exercise and obesity.
In fact, the majority of those who suffer a heart attack have cholesterol levels that are considered ‘normal’. Even so, cholesterol is a fundamental part of the problem.
If your doctor has recommended medication in the form of statins, you should follow that advice. But whether or not drug treatment is needed, lifestyle is fundamentally important.
A central part of lowering risk is diet – but it’s not all about cutting out foods.
Building certain ingredients into your diet can actually lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes.
We have looked at the most up-to-date international research and identified six foods for which there is the best evidence for this.
There are some foods, including nuts, olive and rapeseed oils, that may stop LDL from causing damage
Studies have shown a reduction in LDL cholesterol (the bad type, see below) by as much as 20 per cent in three months when a combination of these foods was taken with a healthy diet. And the more often the foods were eaten, the greater the benefit.
With the help of dietician Dr Sarah Schenker, we have included these foods in healthy, easy-to-prepare, delicious recipes – featured in the new book Eat Your Way To Lower Cholesterol. Our hope is that everyone will enjoy them – whether or not they need help with their heart.
What is cholesterol anyway?
People think of cholesterol simply as a bad thing, but it’s not. In fact, this fatty, waxy substance is essential for building cells and is also needed to make sex and stress hormones.
Most cholesterol in the blood is produced by the liver, which manufactures it from almost any food you eat. The liver adjusts the amount it makes in response to the amount of cholesterol circulating in the blood.
This is why, when cholesterol-containing foods like eggs or shellfish are eaten, in most people the blood cholesterol doesn’t change – as the liver simply makes less.
As well as releasing cholesterol directly into the blood, the liver uses some cholesterol to make bile, a digestive fluid secreted into the gut that helps us absorb fat from the food we eat.
Bile cholesterol is either re-absorbed and recycled by the liver, or is passed out as waste.
We all know that oil and water don’t mix, and because cholesterol is a type of fat, and blood is mostly water, they wouldn’t get along without an important addition. In order for the cholesterol to be transported easily in the bloodstream, the liver coats it in proteins.
The resulting tiny balls of fat are known as lipoproteins, and it is these we are usually referring to when we talk about cholesterol.
