Illegally Parked BMW’s Windows Smashed By Boston Firefighters

THE REASON YOU DON’T PARK BY A FIRE HYDRANT-

EAST BOSTON (CBS) – A man who ignored a fire hydrant put Boston firefighters at risk Wednesday night. The man who parked his new BMW in front of a fire hydrant slowed the battle to save East Boston homes.

Firefighters were forced to smash the windows and thread the fire hose through the car.

The fire on Lexington Street grew to eight alarmsbefore crews were able to get control. No one was hurt, but nearly three dozen people have to find a new place to live.

The man had just bought the BMW and theregistration was just two days old. He also got a $100 fine.

“He was mad,” Rafael Henriquez said.

Henriquez is friends with the car’s owner. He watched as firefighters busted through the windows to hook their hose onto the hydrant.

“I wanted to cry for him,” Henriquez said. “Of course he brought that on himself.”

In fact, Boston firefighters say the only thing on their minds was getting water as quickly as possible to the burning homes which were at that point fully engulfed. Since it had gone to eight alarms, all the closer hydrants were taken. The one blocked by the BMW was a street away.

“You don’t want to lose the full force of the water you’re getting from the hydrant,” Steve MacDonald of Boston Fire said. “It’s important to be as straight as possible.”

The hose still had a kink even after they got it hooked up, so bystanders pitched in and helped firefighters lift and bounce the car away from the curb.

“You can move the car a short distance which is what they did to get the kink out,” MacDonald said. “Again this is all effort that should be concentrated on putting the fire out.”

Back at the scene, firefighters traced the source of the flames to the engine of a Toyota parked in an alley, spreading fire to three nearby buildings, leaving residents like Jaime Hernandez homeless.

“We’re trying to figure out where we’re going to stay and for now my friend offered me shelter at her house,” Hernandez said.

Residents say the owner of the BMW drove it away with two broken windows and a big dent on the side.

Firefighters Rescued Girl, Then Accidentally Ran Over Her with Firetruck – Video

Video footage from the helmet of a rescuer on a plane crash in San Francisco last year appears to show emergency teams failing to assist a teenaged survivor, moments before she was accidentally run over by a fire truck.

Three passengers died when Asiana Airlines Flight 214 clipped a seawall with its landing gear, skidded off the runway and burst into flames at the end of an otherwise routine flight from Seoul to San Francisco on July 6.

One of the victims, Ye Mengyuan, 16, had been pulled alive from the plane and placed near one wing.

But the Chinese teenager was later run over and killed by a fire truck, which did not spot her lying under a layer of fire retardant foam. US prosecutors decided in October not to bring charges against the firefighter driving the truck.

CBS on Thursday broadcast segments of the video, allegedly obtained by a person close to the family of the victim.

Man Who Killed Two Firefighters On Christmas Eve – Killing People “Is What I Do Best”

William Spengler Jr. — the man in upstate New York who ambushed four firefighters on Christmas Eve, killing two — left a three-page suicide note including this line, made public by police:

“I still have to see how much of the neighborhood I can burn down and do what I like doing best: killing people.”

Spengler, unfortunately, had experience killing people: earlier in his life, he had spent 17 years in jail for beating his grandmother to death. Police said that the note, which was described as “rambling,” didn’t reveal an explicit motive aside from a desire to “burn his neighborhood down” and murder as many people as possible.

Police also revealed that Spengler had a Bushmaster AR-15 in his possession (along with a revolver and shotgun ), which, of course, was the same gun used by Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza. There has not yet been any word from Bushmaster regarding the status of Spengler’s man card.

On a related note, as an ex-con, Spengler could not legally posses any guns, so police plan on tracing those guns back to their source. I’m sure the results of how a convicted murderer got his hands on a rifle that he then used to kill two volunteer firefighters will lead to significant strengthening of gun la— alright, I can’t even finish that sentence with a straight face.

Weekly Presidential Address: President Thanks Colorado Firefighters

President Obama toured the devastation in Colorado and delivered his weekly address from the fire-plagued Colorado Springs. Mr. Obama thanked the firefighters for their hard work in trying to bring the fires under control.

Firefighters are working 18 hours a day, around the clock, trying to make sure that they get this blaze under control.  We’ve got volunteers who are out here who are making sure that these firefighters have the food and the water and all the resources that they need.  And we’ve been engaging in some unprecedented coordination between federal, state, and local communities to try to bring this fire under control.

And one of the things I’ve done here, in addition to saying thank you to these firefighters, is to let them know that all of America has their back.  One of the things that happens, whether it’s a fire here in Colorado, or a tornado in Alabama or Missouri, or a flood or a hurricane in Florida, one of the things that happens here in America is when we see our fellow citizens in trouble and having difficulty, we come together as one American family, as one community.  And you see that spirit and you see that strength here in Colorado Springs, where people are working together, promising each other to rebuild.  We’ve got to make sure that we are there with them every step of the way, even after this fire is put out.

Doubling Down on Stupidity Is The Romney Way

I have a sinking suspicion that Romney believes voters aren’t terribly bright.

The main problem with Romney’s new line is that it doesn’t make any sense. “The federal government doesn’t pay for teachers, firefighters or policemen”? Well, actually, the federal government can provide resources to states and municipalities to either hire new teachers and first responders, or prevent layoffs that would otherwise be made. If Washington would do this, we’d see an immediate drop in the unemployment rate, but Republicans refuse to even consider the idea.

What’s more, when Romney says President Obama’s “new idea … didn’t work the first time,” that’s the exact opposite of reality. Obama’s new idea isn’t exactly new — the last three Republican presidents strengthened the national economy through public-sector hiring— and it worked perfectly when Obama protected these jobs in 2009. Here’s a possible follow-up question for Romney: when you say public-sector hiring didn’t work the first time, what in the world are you talking about?

And finally, Romney’s position from Friday hasn’t changed. He sees President Obama fighting for school teachers, police officers, and firefighters, and Romney’s still convinced the economy will be better off if those teachers and first responders are unemployed.

That’s not “completely absurd”; that’s just Romney’s stated position.

“Mitt Romney Does Not Want Firefighters To Be Paid More” – Maddow

In the clip below, Romney traveled to New York on the anniversary of Osama Bin Laden’s death. He is seen talking to Firefighters then later at a fundraiser, Romney tells his donors of a conversation he had with some of New York’s bravest.

Rachel Maddow reports;

“I spoke with a fireman yesterday,” Romney told his donors, “and he has a 1 bedroom apartment and his wife is pregnant, and he can’t afford a second bedroom. …I asked the firefighters I was meeting with, about 15 of them, how many had to take another job to make ends meet, and almost all of them had.”

Rachel Maddow, host of MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show, then shows clips of Romney telling audiences that government employees are getting paid too much money, and if given a chance, he will cut government workers and workers pay.
