Colin Powell – “I certainly cannot in any way support President Trump this year”

In a Sunday interview on CNN, retired General and Republican, Colin Powell expressed frustrations with Donald Trump and his administration’s clear goal of dismantling the very fabric of this nation. Powell also confirmed that he will not support Trump in the 2020 presidential election.

“I certainly cannot in any way support President Trump this year,” Powell, a Republican, told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union,” adding that he couldn’t bring himself to vote for Trump four years ago.

The retired general voted for Trump’s Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, in 2016, and hacked emails released in September of that year showed Powell strongly condemning Trump, labeling him a “national disgrace and an international pariah.”

Powell said Sunday that he is “very close to Joe Biden on a social matter and on a political matter,” adding: “I worked with him for 35, 40 years, and he is now the candidate and I will be voting for him.”

Biden expressed his thanks in a tweet later Sunday, saying, “This isn’t about politics. This is about the future of our country. Grateful for your support, Secretary Powell.”

Colin Powell Slams Trump – “Hasn’t he read the First Amendment?” – Video

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Colin Powell were interviewed by Fareed Zakari on CNN on Sunday, and although both had very important views on where this country is going, Colin Powell has some pointed words on Donald Trump and his leadership style.

When Fareed asked if Trump can be a “moral leader for the rest of the world,” Powell let his feelings be known.

I don’t know that he can do that because right now that is not the way he’s acting. Let me give you an example. My favorite three words in our constitution is the first three words, We The People, We The People. But recently it’s become me the president as opposed to We the people. And you see things that should not be happening. How could the president of the United States get up and say that the media is the enemy of Americans? Hasn’t he read the First Amendment? You’re not supposed to like everything the Press says or what anyone says in the First Amendment, that’s why we have the First Amendment, to protect that type of speech.

The former Secretary of State continued;

And I hope the President can come to the realization that he should really stop insulting people. And I used this two years ago when I said I could not vote for him in the 2016 election. Why? He insulted everybody. He insulted African Americans, he insulted women, he insulted women, he insulted immigrants, he insulted our best friends around the world. He insulted all of his fellow candidates upon the stage during the debates. And I don’t think that’s what should be coming out of the President of the United States, but I don’t see anything that’s changed in the last few years.”

Colin Powell Explains Why The Iran Deal is “a pretty good deal” – Video

When you think of today’s Republican, you certainly will not think of Colin Powell. He has bucked his party on most major issues today – when his fellow Republicans make it their duty to go against everything President Obama is for, Powell has done the complete opposite, putting politics aside and supporting the president’s policies if those policies work for America.

Powell appeared on NBC’s Meet The Press and spoke about the Iran Nuclear Deal.

“I think it is a good deal. I studied very carefully the outline of the deal and what’s in that deal. And I’ve also carefully looked at the opposition to the deal,” Powell said, “And my judgement after balancing those two sets of information is that it’s a pretty good deal.”

The General then goes on to explain why the deal makes sense, saying the deal “has stopped this highway race” towards a nuclear weapon for Iran.

Colin Powell Endorses a Single Payer Healthcare System

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell has waded into the health care debate with a broad endorsement of the kind of universal health plan found in Europe, Canada and South Korea.

“I am not an expert in health care, or Obamacare, or the Affordable Care Act, or however you choose to describe it, but I do know this: I have benefited from that kind of universal health care in my 55 years of public life,” Powell said, according to the Puget Sound Business Journal, last week at an annual “survivors celebration breakfast” in Seattle for those who, like Powell, have battled prostate cancer. “And I don’t see why we can’t do what Europe is doing, what Canada is doing, what Korea is doing, what all these other places are doing.”

Europe, Canada and Korea all have a “single-payer” system, in which the government pays for the costs of health care.

Some Democrats who strongly advocated for, and failed to get, a single-payer system in the 2010 Affordable Care Act, still believe the current law doesn’t go far enough to reform the US health system.

A retired four-star general and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Powell told the audience about a woman named Anne, who as his firewood supplier, faced a healthcare scare of her own. Anne asked Powell to help pay for her healthcare bills, as her insurance didn’t cover an MRI she needed as a prerequisite to being treated for a growth in her brain. In addition, Powell’s wife Alma recently suffered from three aneurysms and an artery blockage. “After these two events, of Alma and Anne, I’ve been thinking, why is it like this?” said Powell.

“We are a wealthy enough country with the capacity to make sure that every one of our fellow citizens has access to quality health care,” Powell. “(Let’s show) the rest of the world what our democratic system is all about and how we take care of all of our citizens.”

Powell Warns Republicans – Your Voter Suppression Laws Will Backfire

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell on Sunday predicted that Republican attempts to pass voter ID laws would “backfire” by energizing minorities to vote them out of office.

Powell took aim at efforts on the state legislature level to require that people show photo identification to vote.

“These kinds of procedures that are being put in place to slow the process down and make it likely that fewer Hispanics and African Americans might vote I think are going to backfire, because these people are going to come out and do what they have to to vote, and I encourage that,” Powell said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

Following the Supreme Court ruling in June that struck down a key part of the Voting Rights Act, Republicans in states like Texas and North Carolina are advancing legislation that would require voters to show photo ID at the polls.

“They claim that there’s widespread abuse and voter fraud, but nothing substantiates that,” Powell said. “There isn’t widespread abuse.”

A Republican who has been increasingly critical of his party in recent years, Powell endorsed President Obama in both 2008 and 2012.

Unlike The Average Republican, Colin Powell Calls Zimmerman’s Verdict “Questionable”

Why Colin Powell still label himself a Republican is beyond my understanding. In yet another vast contrast between him and his party, Powell is siding with the majority of sensible Americans, calling out the injustice of the George Zimmerman verdict.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Secretary of State Colin Powell says the jury verdict that freed the killer of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin was “questionable.” But he isn’t sure it will have staying power in the public consciousness.

Speaking on CBS’s Face the Nation, Powell said cases like Martin’s “blaze across the midnight sky” and are forgotten.

The first black chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and first black secretary of state, Powell says America has come a long way toward racial equality 50 years after Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Powell recalled being refused service when trying to buy a hamburger before the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Minorities have many more opportunities today, but Powell says King would still demand work on education, housing and economic opportunities.

And amazingly, it is his party, the Republicans, who are working their hardest to deny minorities education, housing and economic opportunities.

Colin Powell To Bill O’Reilly – “Why Are You Only Seeing Me As An African American?”

Retired General and former Secretary of State Colin Powell, went on the Fox News Network on Tuesday and was interviewed by Bill O’ Reilly. Powell, and outspoken Republican who voted for President Obama in 2008 and 2012, was asked by the host to defend his voting record for the Democratic president.

“What is it that you object to mostly, that caused you to vote for President Obama twice,” Reilly asked, to which Powell answered that the economic policies offered by the Republican candidates in 2008 and 2012, would not have fixed the economy. But that answer was not enough for Reilly and he ventured into trying to paint Colin’s votes for Obama, as based on race.

After pointing out that African-Americans are still suffering under President Obama, Reilly questioned Powell’s previous answer that the economy made him vote for President Obama. Powell seemed irritated by Reilly’s insertion of race into the conversation. “Why are you only seeing me as an African-American Bill?” Powell asked. “I’m an American.”

He then goes on to explain that although the economy is not where it needs to be, it is better now than it was before Obama took office. Powell also pointed out that when the general economy improves, as it’s doing now, then the economic outlook for other minority groups will improve as well.

The conversation progressed to immigration and voting, with Powell correctly stating that Republicans in the last election tried to “disenfranchise” minority by requiring voter ids and limiting voting days. “I want to see a Republican party that rather than try and make it more difficult to vote and restricting the days and hours you can vote,” Powell said, “a Republican party that says we want everybody to vote and we want you to vote for us.”

Powell and O’Reilly also spoke about Sarah Palin and other Republicans who turned him off during the previous campaigns.

Colin Powell – “Republicans Have An Identity Problem” And “They Look Down On Minorities.”

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell went on NBC’s Meet The Press today, and a discussion on today’s Republican party ensued.

During the interview, NBC’s David Gregory asked Powell why he continued to consider himself a Republican after supporting President Obama in 2008 and 2012 and taking moderate policy positions. Powell replied;

“I think the Republican Party right now is having an identity problem, and I am still a Republican,” Powell explained. “In recent years, there has been a significant shift to the right and we have seen what that shift has produced: two losing presidential campaigns.”

“When we see that in one more generation that the minorities of America — African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Asian Americans — will be the majority of the country, you can’t go around saying, ‘We don’t want to have a solid immigration policy, we’re going to dismiss the 47 percent, we are going to make it hard for the minorities to vote,’ as they did in the last election.”

“There is also a dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party. They still sort of look down on minorities. How can I evidence that? When I see [Palin] saying that the president is ‘shucking and jiving,’ that’s a racial-era slave term. When I see [Sununu] after the president’s first debate, where he didn’t do very well, says that the president was ‘lazy’ — he didn’t say he was slow, he was tired, he didn’t do well — he said he was lazy. Now, it may not mean anything to most Americans, but to those of use who are African Americans, the second word is ‘shiftless’ and there’s a third word that goes along with it.”

“Why do senior Republican leaders tolerate this kind of discussion within the party? I think the party has to take a look at itself. It has to take a look at it’s responsibilities for health care, it has to take a look at immigration, it has to take a look at those less fortunate than us.”

You will be welcomed in the Democratic party Mr. Powell. Come on over!

Former Republican Secretary Of State Colin Powell Endorses President Obama… Again!

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell on Thursday endorsed President Barack Obama for reelection.

“I voted for him in 2008, and I plan to stick with him in 2012,” Powell said on CBS’s “This Morning.” “I’ll be voting for he and for Vice President Joe Biden next month.”

One of the most coveted endorsements remaining in the 2012 presidential race, Powell, a Republican, said Obama inherited a horrendous economy and has begun to turn it around.

“I think, generally, we’ve come out of the dive and we’re starting to gain altitude,” said Powell, who served as George W. Bush’s secretary of state. “It doesn’t mean all our problems are solved.”

Powell also took issue with some of GOP nominee Mitt Romney’s foreign policy positions, calling Romney’s stances a “moving target.”

Colin Powell – The Teaparty’s Position Is Not Helping America

Colin Powell, the Secretary of State during the Bush administration and one of the only sane Republicans remaining in America, has some advise for his fellow Americans -do not vote for anyone representing the Teaparty!

“The Tea Party point of view of ‘no compromise whatsoever’ is not a point of view that will eventually produce a presidential candidate who will win,” he said on ABC’s “This Week With Christiane Amanpour.”

Powell said taking the no-compromise position isn’t helping get things done in Washington, and called on members of Congress to “come back to the center to compromise” in order to see progress.

“Compromise is how this country was founded,” he said, offering as an example the issue of slavery. “Can you imagine more difficult compromises today?” he asked. “We have a Congress now that can’t even pass an appropriations bill.”

Powell slammed the tone on Capitol Hill, which he called “very tense.”

“Republicans and Democrats are focusing more and more on their extreme left and extreme right,” he said. “Unless two people in disagreement with each other don’t find a way to reach out to one another and make compromises, you don’t get a consensus that allows you to move forward.”

Powell appeared on the show in part to promote America’s Promise Alliance, the service coalition he founded, and to talk about veterans’ employment initiatives. He did not discuss the most recent example of partisan congressional gridlock, the failed deficit-reduction Super Committee.
