Gov Snyder Requested Federal Disaster Relief in Flint – Obama Refused

And the president refused with for a good reason.

The Flint water crisis is man-made, created by Michigan’s Republican governor, Rick Snyder, and his government appointed overseer. The president did agree that the people of Flint needed help and declared the water crisis a federal emergency, sending necessary aid to the people who were literally poisoned by Snyder’s water decision.

But Snyder wanted more from Obama. With a federal disaster declaration, Snyder would get more money from the Federal government at a faster pace. So Snyder asked the president to declare Flint a federal disaster area. Obama did not go along with the Republican governor’s appeal.

A disaster declaration would have made larger amounts of federal funding available more quickly to help Flint residents whose drinking water is contaminated with lead. But under federal law, only natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods are eligible for disaster declarations, federal and state officials said. The lead contamination of Flint’s drinking water is a manmade catastrophe.
The president’s actions authorize the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate responses and cover 75% of the costs for much-needed water, filters, filter cartridges and other items for residents, capped initially at $5 million. The president also offered assistance in finding other available federal assistance, a news release Saturday from the White House said.

Donald Trump Misquotes The Bible – Video

For all who know about the Bible, you would know that what Trump said at a Christian school in Virginia today, was totally horrendous. The man who often brag about his religious background didn’t even know the right way to refer to a verse in the Bible.

“Two [sic] Corinthians, right?” Trump boldly said, causing some laughs, moans and giggles among the audience. “Two [sic] Corinthians 3:17. That’s the whole ballgame.”

Another Constitutional Scolar Says Ted Cruz is “Ineligible” to Run for President – Video

Ted Cruz would love for this issue to die, for it to just go away. But it seems to be sticking around for the time being and with good reason. Ted Cruz, born in Canada and a Canadian citizen up to a few months before he declared his intent to run for president, has maintained that having an American mother gives him “Natural Birth” status in his birth place of Calvary Canada. Cruz has maintained that this “Natural Birth” status is “settled law.”

But it is not settled law as the courts have not adjudicated the matter. And the fact that numerous law professors and Constitutional Scholars are coming out saying that Cruz cannot run for president is making this issue even more detrimental to the Cruz campaign.

One of the Constitutional Scholars, Mary Brigid McManamon, wrote about the issue in the Washington Post explaining her reasoning. She sat down with Lawrence O’Donnell and further made her case that Ted Cruz is ineligible to run for president.

Montel – “Beyond Irresponsible” for GOP to Criticize American Prisoners Release

Montel Williams, often a critic of President Obama, turned the critical table around and aimed his criticisms squarely at the Republican presidential candidates last weekend, as they all hammered the president for negotiating a deal that freed five Americans held prisoners in Iran.

Instead of putting his dumb politics to the side just for a brief moment, Marco Rubio couldn’t pass up the opportunity to hit President Obama. “Governments are taking Americans hostage because they believe they can gain concessions from this government under Barack Obama,” Rubio said. “It’s an incentive for more people to do this in the future.”

Under a Chris Christie administration, there would be no negotiating to free the captured Americans. Christie would just wait and hope for their freedom.  “We shouldn’t have to swap prisoners,” Christie said. “These folks were taken illegally in violation of international law and they should have been released without condition.”

Montel lashed out on Facebook;

It’s beyond irresponsible that some of the Republican candidates criticized the swap that will bring our hostages home this morning – beyond terrifying that they seem to so profoundly misunderstand the delicacy of these that they did so PRIOR to the hostages actually leaving Iran – so incompetent that it borders on disqualifying.

It’s beyond irresponsible that some of the Republican candidates criticized the swap that will bring our hostages home…

The Urgency of King’s Message: Forty Eight Years and Counting

I think I’ve found a new, potent source of energy; Martin Luther King, Jr. spinning in his grave over the state of race relations in the country and on the presidential election trail. All we need to do is tap into it and we can power our devices for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, it won’t do much for our national soul.

In the 48 years since his untimely and tragic death, King’s legacy has been begged, borrowed and stolen by those who believe they knew his intentions and by those who wanted them buried along with him. From the start, politicians – mostly on the right, including President Reagan and Senator Jesse Helms – opposed even making King’s birthday a national holiday. Arizona had to be threatened with the ultimate penalty of no Super Bowls, before they would accept the day. It’s also become a favorite day for the NBA to schedule afternoon games, but that seems to be the upper limit on MLK Day commercialization, and that’s a good thing. Those of us who are old enough might remember that January was traditionally the month when retailers would run sales on textiles that they labeled “White Sales.”

Can you imagine?

Over the past few years we’ve witnessed terrible incidents where African-American men, women and children were unjustly killed by the police, unnecessarily fined to the brink of bankruptcy by corrupt public officials, and stopped by the police for reasons that white Americans don’t experience. And what is considered good news for African-Americans, that their rates of narcotics deaths is lower, is tragically caused by racism, as this article recounts:

There is a reason that blacks appear to have been spared the worst of the narcotic epidemic, said Dr. Andrew Kolodny, a drug abuse expert. Studies have found that doctors are much more reluctant to prescribe painkillers to minority patients, worrying that they might sell them or become addicted.
“The answer is that racial stereotypes are protecting these patients from the addiction epidemic,” said Dr. Kolodny, a senior scientist at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University and chief medical officer for Phoenix House Foundation, a national drug and alcohol treatment company.

On the campaign trail, the Republicans continue to express their outrage that minorities are not working because white tax money is easily available to them in the form of public assistance and unemployment benefits. Their fealty to Donald Trump’s immigration scheme will doom them with a majority of Hispanic voters and they can’t win the White House with only White Votes. Their opposition to a fair minimum wage, infrastructure projects, labor collective bargaining rights and public schools really doesn’t allow for any middle class group to support them, much less those who have traditionally been marginalized in American society.

On the Democratic side, Bernie Sanders is making his move in Iowa and New Hampshire and is now trying to appeal more to African-Americans, a group that Hillary Clinton has always done well with. Both of them have had problems with Black Lives Matter and their relative success could come down to the minority vote in southern states and northern cities. The Democrats cannot take the African-American vote for granted because the party has controlled many cities over the years, yet the schools have not improved, housing has not become more affordable, the minimum wage hasn’t helped and many jobs have fled the country.

Barack Obama’s election will have a lasting effect on this country, even as he is the victim of both overt and subtle racism on the part of many of his opponents. That he has served this country with distinction, morality, forthrightness and a stubborn streak that has forced his opposition to argue against fair treatment of all people, makes him a worthy representative of King’s legacy.

And this is why we need to have a holiday for Martin Luther King. It’s here to remind us that we will never live up to the true meaning of our founding documents as long as we treat people differently under the law, in the workplace and schools, and, most importantly, in our heads and hearts. I would urge you to add to your resolutions to lose weight and make more money, one that includes an action, an attitude change, or a commitment to act in King’s spirit and honor his words.

Donald Trump Takes Credit for Iran Releasing American Prisoners

You know it was only a matter of time before Trump pats himself on the back for what the Obama administration accomplished in Iran. You know it was eventually going to happen, Donald Trump taking full credit for the release of Americans held as prisoners in Iran.

At a rally in South Carolina, Trump addressed the audience, telling his followers that because he’s been on the case, things are happening.

“So I’ve been hitting them hard and I think I might have had something to do with it,” Trump told a crowd of activists at the South Carolina Tea Party Convention. “You want to know the truth? It’s a part of my staple thing, I mean, I go crazy when I hear about this, you go absolutely wild because how is it possible?”

Trump has castigated the Iran nuclear deal for months – making it a significant portion of his stump speech. At many campaign rallies, Trump receives a loud cheer from the crowd as he calls Secretary of State John Kerry an incompetent negotiator.

Even though he believed he was due some credit for the prisoner exchange, Trump made clear that he didn’t think that the deal was fair to the United States.

“First of all, it should have taken place three or four weeks ago, whenever the hell they started,” Trump said. “Did you ever see an agreement take so long as this agreement? How long has this thing been going on? Years and years.”

Bernie Sanders Increases lead in Iowa and New Hampshire

It is Sunday and another secret Democratic debate will begin hours from now. But if having these secret debates at all weird hours of the night was a tactic by the DNC to favor the better known Hillary Clinton while keeping the lesser known Bernie Sanders away from the masses, then this has been a colossal failure on the DNC.

Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday showed Sanders with a five-percentage-point lead over Clinton, 49% to 44%.

The latest poll suggests a stark difference from a month ago where Clinton held an 11 percentage point lead over Sanders. Quinnipiac’s survey found that voters in Iowa, where caucuses are held on Feb. 1, see Sanders as more honest and more empathetic than Cliton who, however, is seen by voters as more electable than Sanders in a general election and stronger on foreign policy.

“Iowa may well become Sen. Bernie Sanders’ ‘Field of Dreams,’ Peter A. Brown, the assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, said in a statement. “After three months of Secretary Hillary Clinton holding an average 10-point lead among Iowa Democrats, the playing field has changed.”

If Sanders beats Clinton in Iowa, it would be a surprise given her deep support among Iowa’s Democratic establishment. It would also likely draw comparisons to Clinton’s 2008 presidential run. In the caucuses that year, then-senator Barack Obama beat Clinton and former Sen. John Edwards, largely due to the support of first-time caucus-goers.

A win for Sanders in Iowa would give him a boost headed into New Hampshire’s Feb. 9 primary. Sanders, who represents the neighboring state of Vermont, continues to hold a slight lead in the polls there.

A Monmouth University poll released Tuesday found Sanders leading Clinton in New Hampshire, 53% to 39%.

Trump Blasts Cruz on Twitter – Calls Him “The Ultimate Hypocrite” and a “Natural Born Canadian”

Donald Trump continued his assault on Ted Cruz on Saturday, using Twitter, along with his many  followers to hit Cruz on the fact that he was born in Canada. “Based on the fact that Ted Cruz was born in Canada and is therefore a “natural born Canadian,” did he borrow unreported loans from C banks?”

And the fact that Ted Cruz failed to disclose the almost $`1 million in campaign contributions he received from Goldman Sachs. “Greatly dishonest of #TedCruz to file a financial disclosure for & not list his lending bans- then pretend he is going to clean up Wall St”

And a hit on Ted Cruz for his “New York Values” criticism of New Yorkers. “Everybody that loves the people of New York, and all they have been thru, should get hypocrites like Ted Cruz out of politics!”

Then Cruz’s claim that his is opposed to gay marriage. “If Ted Cruz is so opposed to gay marriage, why did he accept money from people who espouse gay marriage?”

And speaking the truth for a change, calling Cruz “the Ultimate hypocrite.” “Ted is the ultimate hypocrite. Says one thing for money, does another for votes.”

New York Republican Donors Upset with Ted Cruz “New York Values” Statement

Ted Cruz insulted New Yorkers while trying to raise his poll numbers in Iowa and New Hampshire. But the Republican presidential hopeful forgot that while insulting the entire state, there are Republicans and Republican donors in the state too, and these people just might not like the fact that he is demoralizing them.

Longtime New Yorker and Republican donor John Catsimatidis is one of these people. In an interview, Catsimatidis told MSNBC that Ted Cruz should be ashamed for insulting New Yorkers with his slam at “New York values.”

“I think that whether you’re a Democrat or whether you’re Republican, that every New Yorker was upset about it. Because it was nuts!” the grocery store mogul and Republican donor told MSNBC on Friday afternoon. “A presidential candidate should not try and tear up the country by tearing up section by section.”

Catsimatidis — best known in politics for big donations to conservatives and a failed mayoral bid in 2013 — gave the maximum $5,400 to Cruz this spring (as well as donating thousands to many other 2016 candidates, including Jeb Bush, Hillary Clinton, and Lindsey Graham), but said he was upset to hear the remark, which seemed to insinuate that the city was too socially liberal.

“I think he’s trying to say that ‘Hey, you guys are New York: You got too many gays, you got too many transgenders, you got too many this, you got too many that.’ Look, we live in the greatest city in the world, New York, and I think he should be ashamed,” he said, calling the remark a “mistake” but saying he’d considering hearing the senator out more if he apologized.

NY Governor Slams Cruz – Says He’s “Divisive” and “Anti-American” – Video

Ted Cruz launched what turned out to be a very feeble criticism on Donald Trump when he spoke about Trump’s “New York Values,” suggesting that New Yorkers live by a different standard and a different set of values than the rest of the nation, that somehow our value system doesn’t add up to his own or that of the rest of the country. His statement was an obvious slap to the Republican frontrunner and all of us in the Big Apple.

Today, Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York, slammed Cruz and his comment as divisive and “anti-American.”

‘The Nation’ Endorses Bernie Sanders for President

“Sanders has used his insurgent campaign to tell Americans the truth about the challenges that confront us,” the editors at The Nation wrote. “He has summoned the people to a “political revolution,” arguing that the changes our country so desperately needs can only happen when we wrest our democracy from the corrupt grip of Wall Street bankers and billionaires.”

“We believe such a revolution is not only possible but necessary,” they continued. “And that’s why we’re endorsing Bernie Sanders for president. This magazine rarely makes endorsements in the Democratic primary (we’ve done so only twice: for Jesse Jackson in 1988, and for Barack Obama in 2008). We do so now impelled by the awareness that our rigged system works for the few and not for the many. Americans are waking up to this reality, and they are demanding change. This understanding animates both the Republican and Democratic primaries, though it has taken those two contests in fundamentally different directions.”

Allen West Wants War with Iran Over Captured and Release of US Soldiers

Allen West echoed the common Republican thinking when he took to his blog and expressed his disappointment with the fact that 10 US soldiers were captured, fed and then released by Iranian National Guards. As far as West is concerned, America should declare war against Iran and the two nations should duke it out ’till the last man falls!

“The result of two U.S. Navy vessels being boarded and seized by an enemy — which is what the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Navy is — is disturbing,” he wrote on his blog.

“The images and video they took depicting our soldiers on their knees in the position of surrender is damning,” West continued. “This, folks, is an act of war, and our soldiers were captured. Our honor calls upon us to fight, to resist, not surrender.
“The ramifications of not doing so means our honor is now being mocked and we’re seen as nothing more than cowards on our knees. Say what you wish, but that’s the perception in the Middle East, especially to our enemies.”

No surprise here folks. War is the Republicans’ only language. It’s all they know. And although every single soldier was apparently fed and released hours later, West and the Republicans cannot accept that sometimes, war should not be the answer. Bring the guns, shoot bullets, drop bombs, kill tens or even hundreds of thousands of people in the process.

Fight! Fight! Fight! Kill! Kill! Kill! And shed the blood of out troops too!
