Virginia School Board Member Faces Ouster After Sending Racist Michelle Obama Emails

A string of racist emails and controversial remarks have shaken up a school board in southeastern Virginia’s Isle of Wight County, and now one of the people responsible is facing intense pressure to resign.

On Thursday, board members voted 4 to 1 to officially call for their colleague Herb DeGroft to step down over emails he sent this month from his board email account attacking first lady Michelle Obama. DeGroft was the only one who voted against the measure.

According to NBC12, one of the emails DeGroft sent to colleagues depicted bare-breasted, African female warriors along with the caption, “Michelle Obama’s high school reunion.” Another message claimed the first lady was paid $50 to model in National Geographic.

The emails didn’t stop with DeGroft’s initial sending. Board of Supervisors Vice Chairman Byron “Buzz” Bailey forwarded them to other board members and county employees. Bailey drew criticism earlier this month for saying “the South will rise again” during a board meeting on budgetary issues. Those comments, as well as his involvement with the racist emails, led to the resignation of Isle of Wight Division Superintendent Katrise Perera.

Democrat Jim Graves Will No Longer Run For Bachmann’s Congressional Seat

The Democrat who almost won Michele Bachmann’s Congressional seat in the last election is now dropping out of the race. “Mission accomplished,” Jim Graves said, after hearing that Bachmann will not run again for re-election.

“Basically, after all that’s gone on, and with Michele Bachmann now stepping down, I’ve been talking to my friends and family and frankly, the feeling is, ‘Mission Accomplished,’” Graves told MinnPost in an interview published Friday. “She wasn’t representing the people of the 6th District appropriately, and now she won’t be representing them. There’s no way anyone could run and win who would be worse than Michele Bachmann. So we accomplished that task.”

According to Graves, he plans to leave public life for the next few months and return to his role as a businessman and hotelier. He said he hopes another qualified candidate will pick up where he left off and give Democrats a shot at taking the seat.

Graves ran a strong campaign in 2012, coming within 4,300 votes of ousting Bachmann despite being outspent by a 12-to-1 margin. National Democrats largely ignored the race until the final weeks, however, primarily because Bachmann’s fundraising advantage was initially believed to give her an uncontested path to reelection. Their ears perked up after Graves’ near-miss, and earlier this year, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee expressed excitement at getting involved in a Bachmann-Graves rematch.

Graves has said he’s satisfied knowing that Bachmann is no longer plotting a return to Congress. But with her name recognition gone from the race, he told MinnPost that he thinks national Democrats and the media will soon lose interest. It appears that Graves already has.

OSCAR PISTORIUS MURDER SCENE Bloody Photos Surface

Photos of the blood-spattered bathroom where Oscar Pistorius shot his girlfriend to death have surfaced on the web … and they could prove to be crucial pieces of evidence in the runner’s defense. The pics were taken from outside the bathroom door in the Blade Runner’s South African mansion  … and show two bullet holes in the bathroom door … along with a pool of blood by the toilet … and a blood trail leading to the stairs.

Another pic shows blood drops on the stairs … where Oscar says he carried Reeva while trying to call for help.

Oscar admits he shot and killed Reeva Steenkamp on February 14 … but insists it was an accident.

In fact, Pistorius told investigators he grabbed his gun and fired 4 shots into the bathroom that night … but only because he thought an intruder snuck into his house and was hiding in the toilet. The holes in the door could back Oscar’s defense … that he truly didn’t know who was in the bathroom when he opened fire.

Of course, the person in the bathroom was Reeva — who ultimately died from her wounds. Oscar was arrested and charged with murder.

Cheerios Attacked For Showing Interracial Family In Ad

It’s amazing how far we’ve come as a people. In the year 2013, the sight of an interracial family on television (actors mind you) is still sparking outrage among some. These people refuse to let go of their knuckle-dragging lineage.

An innocent ad for heart-healthy Cheerios has sparked an onslaught of disturbing racist backlash on the Internet.

The cereal brand was forced to pull comments from its YouTube page after a cereal commercial featuring an interracial family reportedly prompted a string of messages about Nazis, racial genocide and viewers so disgusted they “want to vomit.”

The half-minute ad — which has more than 250,000 views — shows a young girl chatting about Cheerios with her Caucasian mother, and later pans to her black father. While the spot garnered an unusual amount of racist criticism, General Mills-owned Cheerios said the buzz wasn’t all negative.

“Consumers have responded positively to our new Cheerios ad,” Camille Gibson, the cereal brand’s vice president of marketing, told the Daily News in a statement.

“At Cheerios, we know there are many kinds of families and we celebrate them all,” she said.

Support from Cheerio fans showed up on Facebook.

“Having been mixed in the 70s, I’d like to thank everyone at Cheerios for making a commercial with an interracial couple!” Beschelle Lockhart wrote. “Going to buy boxes today! Many thanks for reflecting what my family looked like.”

Beat the Heat: How to Avoid Dehydration during Hot Weather

Before moving to the East Coast a friend told me, “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes.  It’ll change.”

She was right.  I’ve never experienced the quick shifts in weather the New England terrain brings.  One of the consequences of quick weather changes is the ill effect severe weather can have on our bodies.  We can be huddling under an umbrella one day and sweating the next day as temperatures rise 20 degrees.

Dehydration is one of the negative effects of hot weather.  Children and older adults are at higher risk of dehydration because their bodies do not communicate their need for hydration as quickly as young and middle aged adults.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, symptoms of dehydration include: fatigue, dizziness, dark colored urine, lack of hunger, flushed skin, intolerance for heat and even a dry cough.  Other sources note the presence of irritability is another sign of dehydration (watch for this in children as they can’t always explain their thirst).

Keeping healthy water levels inside our bodies is essential for maintaining our internal temperature, cushioning joints and ligaments and getting rid of internal waste.  If there is not enough water inside our bodies, our brains let us know something is wrong through a parched mouth and feeling sluggish, flushed and tired.

Prevent Dehydration with Prevention

How can we tell if we are dehydrated?  The rule of thumb most doctors and health professionals go by is, ‘if you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated.’

It’s easy to rush outside in the good weather and forget to bring an extra water bottle.  However, don’t enjoy the weather at the expense of you and your family’s health:   Here are 6 ways to avoid dehydration this summer and continue with summer fun:

  • Drink 16-20 ounces of water before physical activity outside.
  • After intense activity, the American College of Sports medicine encourages rehydration instead of consuming large quantities of liquid.

Studies show drinking a lot of water or fluid at once causes one to urinate more; the body cannot distribute a lot of fluid at the same time. However, rehydrating by drinking 6-10 oz. of fluid every 10-15 minutes allows the body to refuel its fluid loss more efficiently.

  • Be aware of the dehydrating effects of alcohol and caffeinated beverages.  Drink water to make up for fluid loss.
  • Bored with plain water?  Try adding slices of different fruit.  Try watermelon, lemon, lime, cucumber and sprigs of mint to jazz up water.
  • Freeze a few water bottles and carry them around on hot days to drink cold water all day.
  • Fresh fruit such as watermelon, apples and grapes contains water.  Encourage kids and adults to snack on fresh fruit instead of dehydrating, salty snacks.

President Obama’s Poll Numbers Rise Despite G.O.P’s Manufactured Controversies

President Obama’s approval ratings have increased since a trio of controversies involving his administration began dominating the news cycle.

Fifty percent of those surveyed in Gallup’s three-day tracking poll released Wednesday say they approve of the job the president is doing, compared to 43 percent who said they disapprove.

The 7-percentage point positive margin is better than where the president stood in the poll over the two weeks before the IRS and Department of Justice scandals broke, and is near Obama’s rating over the waning days of the 2012 campaign when voters convincingly elected him to a second term in office.

Obama’s Gallup numbers are up three percentage points since the pollster’s May 23-25 survey and suggest Obama’s approval ratings held steady, even as the Internal Revenue Service’s targeting of Tea Party groups made headlines.

Maryland Teacher Arrested – Had Sex With Family Dog

A Maryland teacher has been busted for bestiality after sick footage emerged of her having sex with her family’s pet dog, police said.

Stephanie Mikles, 45, allegedly engaged in a variety of sexual acts with the canine over a month-long period in August 2008.

But she was only arrested earlier this year after child advocacy center officers searched her home on an unrelated matter and found pictures and video of the disgusting acts.

Mikles, who looks after special needs students for Hartford County School District, was charged with unnatural or perverted sexual practice.

She denies the allegations and has been suspended from her job pending the outcome of the case.

If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison and a $1,000 fine. The dog, reports ABC2, is still living with the family.

Mikles is out of jail on $5,000 bond.

Oklahoma Republican Asks: “What Happened To The Republican Party I Joined?”

Oklahoma state Rep. Doug Cox (R), published a piece today in The Oklahoman. The article discussed the Republican’s unforgiving stance on abortions and not providing contraceptives to women. And in the piece, Mr. Cox asked what happened to the party he joined and wondered if his fellow Republican colleagues lives in “the real world.”

As a practicing physician (who never has or will perform an abortion), I deal with the real world. In the real world, 15- and 16-year-olds get pregnant (sadly, 12-, 13- and 14-year-olds do also). In the real world, 62 percent of women ages 20 to 24 who give birth are unmarried. And in the world I work and live in, an unplanned pregnancy can throw up a real roadblock on a woman’s path to escaping the shackles of poverty.

Yet I cannot convince my Republican colleagues that one of the best ways to eliminate abortions is to ensure access to contraception. A recent attempt by my fellow lawmakers to prevent Medicaid dollars from covering the “morning after” pill is a case in point. Denying access to this important contraceptive is a sure way to increase legal and back-alley abortions. Moreover, such a law would discriminate against low-income women who depend on Medicaid for their health care.

But wait, some lawmakers want to go even further and limit everyone’s access to birth control by allowing pharmacists to refuse to fill prescriptions for contraception.

What happened to the Republican Party that I joined? The party where conservative presidential candidate Barry Goldwater felt women should have the right to control their own destiny? The party where President Ronald Reagan said a poor person showing up in the emergency room deserved needed treatment regardless of ability to pay? What happened to the Republican Party that felt government should not overregulate people until (as we say in Oklahoma) “you have walked a mile in their moccasins”?
