Republican Asked For Obamacare Horror Stories, Got Obamacare Praises Instead

Cathy McMorris Rodgers, chair of the House GOP conference, apparently thought a good way to celebrate the 5th anniversary of Obamacare would be to ask her Facebook followers to provide her with their horror stories about the law. Things did not work out that way as praises for Obamacare poured in.

She wrote;

This week marks the 5th anniversary of #Obamacare being signed into law. Whether it’s turned your tax filing into a nightmare, you’re facing skyrocketing premiums, or your employer has reduced your work hours, I want to hear about it.

Please share your story with me so that I can better understand the challenges you’re facing.

Here is one of the responses;

This is mostly just an object lesson in social media use. As many brands have discovered, opening yourself up to this kind of dialogue is basically an open invitation to get trolled.

But it also reveals something fundamental about the structure of the Affordable Care Act. Reasonable people can disagree about whether this law is, all things considered, a good idea. But one of the main things it does is raise taxes rather dramatically on a pretty small number of high-income people in order to give subsidized health insurance policies to a substantially larger number of low-income people. Indeed, this is one of the main things Republicans don’t like about it!

But if you do a simple head count, you are almost certainly going to find more people getting discount insurance than people paying extra taxes.

Ted Cruz Confirms – He is Signing up For Obamacare – Video

Amazing. He is one of the loudest critics of the new healthcare law, the law that now provides healthcare to millions of Americans, but Cruz now confirms that he will in fact, sign up for Obamacare. It’s the all for me, none for you mentality!

“We will presumably go on the exchange and sign up for health care, and we’re in the process of transitioning over to do that,” Cruz, a Republican and Obamacare hater, told The Des Moines Register.

Cruz, who once depended on his wife for health insurance, will now look to Obamacare to save his sorry ass!

Over 16 Million Americans Now Covered By Obamacare

The breakdown: 14.1 million adults insured since Obamacare’s first open-enrollment period which began in October 2013, and 2.3 million young adults aged 19-25 covered on a parent’s plan since the policy took effect in 2010.

The two-page report by the Department of Health and Human Services provides fresh evidence that the still-unpopular law has sharply reversed the trend of Americans losing their coverage. The uninsured rate fell from 20.3 percent to 13.2 percent as of March 4, 2015, a drop of 35 percent.

The reduction in uninsured is steeper among blacks (9.2 percentage points) and Hispanics (12.3 percentage points) than among whites (5.3 percentage points).

Benjamin Netanyahu Domestic Policies Education Foreign Policies Healthcare Immigration Reform Israel Mitch McConnell News Nuclear Security Politics

Elected, Perchance to Govern?

Mitch McConnell, moderate. I thought I’d never see that characterization, but after last week’s embarrassing, incompetent, dangerous gambit the House Republicans played, he’s looking like the only GOP adult in the room. John Boehner seems to have lost his caucus and is now dependent on the far right to dictate what gets done in the House, and what’s getting done is virtually nothing. Kicking the Homeland Security funding argument to this week will do nothing except make Friday night another frantic opportunity for brinkmanship and Obama-bashing. In the end, Homeland Security will get funding and the president’s immigration changes will stand. The real losers will be the people who work for the agency as they bite their nails and wait to see if they’ll be getting paid for another week. If terrorists read American news sources, they are surely laughing at us.

Not content to make itself look bad on the domestic front, the Republicans doubled down and asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to come and speak to a joint session of Congress, an honor he will deliver this week. Never mind that his visit, essentially a jab at the Obama administrations efforts to negotiate a nuclear treaty with Iran, will only put more on strain US-Israel relations, although there are reports that things might be getting less strained. Mr. Netanyahu, I’m sure, will have important things to say. The problem is that he might want to think twice before attaching himself to the clown car Congress that can’t seem to find money to pay for homeland security, much less debate a serious issue like a possible Iranian nuclear weapon.

This is also the week that the Supreme Court will hear arguments in King v. Burwell, the case that challenges whether the federal government can give subsidies to people who buy health insurance on the federal exchange. The plaintiffs believe that only those who buy policies on state exchanges should get subsidies. Which of course begs the question, if the court rules for the plaintiffs, will they work feverishly to make sure that the states without exchanges set them up quickly so the law can work and millions of people can keep their health care?

Of course not.  This is most likely the final attempt to destroy a law that is working wonderfully and is fundamentally changing the health care landscape for the better. Also, the states that would suffer the most if the subsidies are struck down will be the poorest, reddest states in the country. You know, the ones whose citizens vote against their interests by electing governments that seek to limit the programs their people desperately need.

And the state that would suffer the most? Florida. Does Jeb Bush or Marco Rubio have a fall back plan if millions of Floridians lose their health insurance? No. Do both of them want to be president? Of course, but what a catastrophe either of them would be.

And finally, this week will see the rollout of the PARCC tests across the nation. School districts are hoping that their technology holds up and that students can navigate the many screen they’ll need to use in order to answer the questions. Some families have decided that they don’t want their students to participate, so they’ve opted out, or “refused” to take the tests as the officials like to characterize it, The testing will take almost three weeks and then return in late April or early May, taking more valuable time and resources from classrooms and actual learning. The tests will mean almost nothing to students, but for teachers, they will count for 10% of their yearly evaluation (in New Jersey, at least). I give these tests five years, and then the education establishment will move on to something newer.

March is certainly roaring in.

Obamacare in Florida – Almost 2 Million Floridians Enrolled by February 15th

Florida. Another state with a Republican governor who, if he had his way, would repeal Obamacare and leave his constituents without healthcare in a jiffy! Yes, that same Florida registered almost 2 million Americans to receive health insurance benefits from The Affordable Care Act.

Erollment in Affordable Care Act health insurance plans topped 1.6 million in Florida and totaled about 11.4 million nationwide through the Feb. 15 deadline, according to data released Wednesday by the federal Department of Health and Human Services.

The figures reflect the number of people who selected a plan during the just-completed three-month open enrollment period or who enrolled during the previous year and were automatically re-enrolled.

Officials said the deadline for people who were unable to complete their enrollments by Feb. 15 would be extended by a week, so the enrollment totals will be revised once those enrollees are counted.

Enrollment totals for metropolitan areas included in Wednesday’s release were:

Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach — 756,137

Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford — 192,881

Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater — 174,675

Jacksonville — 80,256

North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton — 44,072

Convicted Republican Felon Calls Obama “Vulgar” and “Boy From the Ghetto” – PIC

Again, this is a convicted felon talking. His name is Dinesh D’Souza and yes, he is a convicted felon and pleaded guilty for illegal campaign contributions.

D’Souza posted this on his twitter feed apparently complaining that the President is a “vulgar man” and a “boy from the ghetto,” because the president took a selfie for Buzzfeed to promote the Affordable Health Care Act, better known as Obamacare.

My question is this: Since when is taking a selfie a vulgar act done by ghetto people? And while I’m at it, lemme also ask this: why is a convicted Republican felon the moral authority on selfie taking etiquette?

Republicans. Their stupidity never cease to amaze me!

CBO – Obamacare is Costing Much Less Than Originally Predicted

Here is a bit of news that is bound to piss Republicans off – Obamacare is costing much less than the CBO original predicted.

In January 2010, the Congressional Budget Office projected that the federal health spending would total a bit more than $11 trillion between 2011 and 2020.

Today, the Congressional Budget Office thinks it made a mistake. Costs are coming in lower-than-expected, and the CBO’s newest projections suggest the federal government will spend $600 billion less on health care than they predicted back in 2010.

So far, so good: projections are always wrong by at least a bit, and it’s nice to have the extra $600 billion in America’s pocket.

But here’s the incredible thing: as Paul Van de Water, a health care expert at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, points out, the January 2010 projection didn’t include any of the spending associated with Obamacare. The latest projections include all of the spending associated with Obamacare.

Republicans to Waste More Tax Dollars on Another Obamacare Repeal Vote

Not only are they wasting the American people’s time with these pointless Obamacare repeal votes, these so-called “conservatives” are wasting our tax dollars as well. Millions of dollars down the drain on over 50 failed votes, and these “conservatives” see nothing wrong with wasting even more money on Obamacare repeal.

Is this why we pay these fools, or are we the fools for keeping them in office?

The Republican-led House is planning to vote next week to fully repeal Obamacare, a GOP leadership said on Wednesday.

It will be the fourth House vote to repeal the law in its entirety, and the latest in more than 50 votes aimed at dismantling President Barack Obama’s signature domestic achievement.

The House last voted to wipe out Obamacare in May 2013, after GOP freshmen complained that they had not had the chance to vote to repeal the law yet.

The upcoming vote is likely to succeed in the House and face a filibuster in the Senate and a veto threat from Obama. It appears to be an attempt to help more than three-dozen newly elected House Republicans win points with their base.

The Latest GOP Swimsuit Competition

My apologies if the image of Chris Christie in a swimsuit finds you eating a meal while reading this. It’s one of the hardships of the blogging trade, I know.

As mid-January hurries into late-January (a month of Mondays if there ever was one), we find ourselves confronted with news from the right side of the political spectrum as Hillary Clinton and any other would-be Democrats are seemingly taking the month off.

The big news, as usual, comes from New Jersey where the main question revolves around whether the Governor’s actions in Dallas last weekend dealt a fatal blow to his presidential hopes. The thinking is that Christie’s awkward embrace of Cowboy’s owner Jerry Jones while wearing an orange sweater, was akin to Michael Dukakis in a tank or Howard Dean screaming. That is, an unpresidential image so egregious that it renders a candidate unelectable. My sense is that, no, this did not end Christie’s run before it began (and it will begin later this month), but it did project Christie as the wanna-be he clearly is. And it also reinforces the notion that the man just doesn’t think before he acts sometimes. He believes that he is always right and his aides reinforce that daily. The Dallas escapade might not be the end, but it presages another event that will hurt him sometime down the road. Bank on that.

More bigger than Christie, though, is the news that Mitt Romney is strongly considering a third run for the White House. This would be a very bad idea because third time candidates tend to become parodies and, then, national jokes.

William Jennings Bryan ran for the Democratic nomination four times in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, matching the Buffalo Bills for important national losses. Bryan, though, will always be remembered for his Cross of Gold speech, where he attempted to tie the business-friendly Republicans to a policy that would increase the suffering of the lower classes at the expense of the wealthy. Sound familiar? Today, Romney would more likely make a speech saying that a Cross of Gold would be a sound investment.

Even Teddy Roosevelt lost some luster when he ran for a third time in 1912, but he had the extra added legitimacy of having previously been president for almost eight years, and for being a firm advocate for responsible corporate behavior and for his solid conservation record. You know those national parks that Romney wants to open for drilling, exploration and timber? Roosevelt made them happen. Romney can only dream of that kind of influence, even if he does manage to get out of the primaries. Which he won’t.

And finally, there’s Jeb Bush, who apparently is evolving as we speak. And for someone whose view on evolution is somewhat suspect, it’s refreshing to read that:

“There is an evolution in temperament and an evolution in judgment and an evolution in wisdom — and there is an evolution in his respect for others’ point of view,” said Al Cardenas, a longtime friend who insisted that Mr. Bush had “not changed his conservative values.”

Perhaps by the end of the campaign, Mr. Bush will evolve into a Democrat. OK, OK, I know, but a fella can dream, can’t he?

So there you have it: the early mid-January political report. By the end of the month I would suspect that Mitt and Chris will join Jeb in the money-raising competition and then they’ll all jump head first into the campaign sometime after the Supreme Court affirms the Affordable Care Act.

Donald Trump Endorses Single Payer Healthcare – Video

Donald Trump went on David Letterman last night and spewed some lies about Obamacare. So much lies were told, that David Letterman actually had to interject at one point, saying “I don’t believe that is true.” At another point when Trump continued complaining about Obamacare, he accused the system of containing “fraud and abuse,” to which Letterman asked for documented proof of said “fraud and abuse.”

But in all the lies, Trump spoke about a friend of his who suffered a serious medical condition while visiting in Scotland. According to Trump, his friend was only supposed to be there for four days when he got sick, and was taken to a hospital where he was treated by some very “great doctors” giving him “great care.” According to Trump, when his friend asked “where do I pay,” he was told, “there are no charge.”

This of course is because Scotland has a single payer type system, and in comparing the American system to that in Scotland, Trump said, “we can have a great system in this country…” before he was cut off by Letterman. But following his line of reasoning one can easily conclude that Trump prefers the Scotland system than the system here in America.

Obamacare Does It Again – Uninsured Rate in America Plunges to New Lows

#ThanksObama! How dare you implement policies that actually help people!

The uninsured rate dropped to 12.9 percent for 2014’s fourth quarter, a Gallup poll released Tuesday showed. This figure — the lowest since Gallup began measuring daily in 2008 — is down from the 13.4 percent rate in the third quarter in 2014 and down from 17.1 percent in 2013’s fourth quarter.

While the figure has decreased across all demographics, the pollster notes that the sharpest decline in uninsured has been among African-American and low-income Americans. The number of uninsured Hispanics has decreased as well, but they remain the highest uninsured demographic in the country, with 32.4 percent without coverage.

The poll showed a sharp decrease of uninsured U.S. adults from the end of 2013 to the end of 2014 as a growing number of Americans signed up for coverage through state and federal exchanges under the Affordable Care Act. The 2015 enrollment period opened on Nov. 15 and will close on Feb. 15.

The Gallup poll was conducted Oct. 1 to Dec. 30, 2014, and is based on 43,000 interviews with U.S. adults.
