Senator Claire McCaskill Supports Marriage Equality

On her Tumble page, the Democratic Senator wrote;

“And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. I Corinthians 13

“The question of marriage equality is a great American debate. Many people, some with strong religious faith, believe that marriage can only exist between a man and a woman. Other people, many of whom also have strong religious faith, believe that our country should not limit the commitment of marriage to some, but rather all Americans, gay and straight should be allowed to fully participate in the most basic of family values.

“I have come to the conclusion that our government should not limit the right to marry based on who you love. While churches should never be required to conduct marriages outside of their religious beliefs, neither should the government tell people who they have a right to marry.

“My views on this subject have changed over time, but as many of my gay and lesbian friends, colleagues and staff embrace long term committed relationships, I find myself unable to look them in the eye without honestly confronting this uncomfortable inequality. Supporting marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples is simply the right thing to do for our country, a country founded on the principals of liberty and equality.

“Good people disagree with me. On the other hand, my children have a hard time understanding why this is even controversial. I think history will agree with my children.”

Republican Lawmaker Found Dead From Gunshot Wound To Head

Mississippi Bureau of Investigation officials are looking into the death of state Rep. Jessica Upshaw, who was found at a residence in Simpson County on Sunday.

The 53-year-old Republican lawmaker from Diamondhead in Hancock County died of a gunshot wound to the head, Simpson County Sheriff told WLBT-TV.

“It appeared to be self-inflicted,” he said.

Lewis told The Clarion-Ledger that Upshaw was found at the home of former state Rep. Clint Rotenberry in Mendenhall. Rotenberry was first elected to the House in 1992. He lost a Republican primary runoff to Andy Gipson in House District 77, covering parts of Rankin, Simpson and Smith counties, in 2007..

Simpson County Coroner Terry Tutor would not release any details on Upshaw’s death.

“She’s passed; that’s all I know at this point,” he said. “I’ve given it to MBI. They’re doing their investigation on it.”

Chardonnay, Where Have You Been All My Life?

It was rare that I even drank a white wine anymore. In my club-hopping days, white wines were all the rage because they were cheap and easy to pronounce. They were also very sweet, exactly the way you  thought a wine should taste when you’re a naive 18 y.o.

My taste for wines matured right along the time that I did and so I began looking for a more sophisticated, sultry, complex taste. I remember my first red was a Cabernet Sauvignon and I liked it primarily because the name was French and I could order it with the proper accent almost immediately, even when drunk. Then came the chiantys, the merlots, the burgundies and  pinot noirs. The zinfandels, which I liked the least, the Italian Reds and Argentine Malbecs. And I adored the Chileans.

Then, at a recent house party I threw,  one of my guests brought over a bottle of Catena 2005 Chardonnay Mendoza–an Argentinian white–and dispelled my whole myth of  white wines not having enough seriousness to set the desired ambiance of the moment.

The typical taste of a chardonnay is a voluptuous, wide-bodied, velvety flavor. There’s a buttery tone with hints of citrus, vanilla, toasty coconut or toffee. Very grown-up, it sure wasn’t the taste I had remembered from my wasted youth lol!

I still love my sexy reds, but I can appreciate a white wine now and will be exploring others.

Not wanting to ruin my newfound discovery with a mismatched food pairing , I looked up some meals that are said to go great with chardonnay that I can try out, all ready in about an hour’s time or less. My taste buds can’t wait to try them out together!

Redefining Equality

The Supreme Court will finally hear arguments in the Marriage Equality cases this week, and it’s about time. If justice delayed is justice denied, than we’ve had denial of justice for a good part of our population for far too long.

The opponents of marriage equality do not want to talk about civil rights. They don’t want to talk about equality. They don’t want to talk about gays sharing in society and being fully accepted in American culture. What they want to talk about is redefining marriage, which they say is what these cases are all about. They also want to point to the Bible for their definition, and cite its prohibitions against any homosexual activity. You’ll excuse me, but I am tired of having to worry about what a book that also mandates stoning, banishment and ritual murder has to say about people who live in a manner that is really not your business. If religious opponents of marriage equality can pick and choose which parts of the Bible they want to apply here, then I will feel free to ignore the Bible altogether as a remnant of tales, stories and oral histories that provide a fascinating narrative, but are not relevant to the modern world.

But in the end, they are simply redefining equality. And that’s wrong.

The main argument against marriage equality is that it would redefine the institution that opponents believe to be the bedrock of any civilization. Once you allow anybody who loves another person to marry them, then you’re opening the door to polygamy, incest and child marriage. Here’s Brian S. Brown, one of the most active opponents of marriage equality:

“When you knock over a core pillar of society like marriage, and then try to redefine biblical views of marriage as bigotry, there will be consequences,” Mr. Brown warned last August in a fund-raising letter. “Will one of the consequences be a serious push to normalize pedophilia?”

Then there’s this audio from the NPR program The Takeaway, where Joseph Backholm, executive director of Family Policy Institute, an anti-marriage equality group, says that not only should gays not be allowed to marry, they shouldn’t be able to adopt and raise children, since that right is traditionally reserved for those who can create children.  I guess childless heterosexual couples need not apply either.

This is what the right wing does best: They scare and twist facts so that there’s no other choice but to oppose the same things they oppose. But Mr. Brown did more than that. He enlisted African-American clergymen and women to oppose marriage equality because, he said, it was less a civil rights issue than one of religious doctrine. Wasn’t this the same argument that segregationists used to fight integration?

Yes it was.

Denying people rights is the same no matter what their station is. Laws that forbid intermarriage were overturned. Laws that forbid certain sexual practices were overturned. Public places were integrated. The long history of our country generally moves in one direction; towards more freedom and more access for all groups. I can’t imagine the Supreme Court saying that marriage equality is against the Constitution. It’s just a matter of how far they’ll go.

The problem, though, is that even if the Court overturns the Defense of Marriage Act, it doesn’t mean that gay couples will have an unfettered right to marry or enjoy the same rights and privileges as heterosexual couples. Unless the Court mandates marriage equality throughout the nation, states that don’t recognize it can continue to not do so. That will continue to complicate the lives of those couples who are legally married in the eight states that do recognize marriages if they even visit states that do not. That’s not equality. More delays. More denials.

Here is a graphic that explains how the court might rule.

I expect that the Court will open the gates to marriage equality in some way, but won’t make a sweeping judgement that covers the whole country. I also believe that this will be another John Roberts decision and that he will provide the fifth vote in favor. If Anthony Kennedy comes along, then the tally will be 6-3. I just can’t see Scalia, Alito or Thomas signing on to this.

Opponents of marriage equality say that an expansion of marriage rights is not a done deal. I disagree. Many people already have these marriage rights in the states that recognize gay marriage. I cannot imagine that the court would take those rights away. And once they are affirmed, they will become part of the American way of life. Gay couples will be more visible and will ultimately become more accepted. It will take some time and there will be bumps along the way, but it will happen.

Because this is a civil rights issue. Plain and simple.

Sleeping Beauty

Yes, she’s in a box. And Yes, she’s sleeping.

I must admit, I don’t get it.

But if you do, you can catch Tilda Swinton at the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York, NY as she sleeps in her box for her performance art pieced called “The Maybe”.

Keep in mind that this will be performed on random days where not even the museum knows when she will pop in for a long nap. So, you may have to stalk Twitter to know just exactly when she is making an appearance.

The Maybe” includes Tilda Swinton sleeping in a box with just herself and a mattress, pillow, linen, water, and spectacles.

Sounds riveting…

My Favorite Supplement for Healthy Nails

If you suffer from brittle nails that have a hard time growing, you may want to check this supplement out.

It’s called Biotin and it helps with hair and nail growth. The hair growth may take some time noticing, but you will begin to see almost immediate results for nail strength and growth. I discovered this by accident when I was taking Biotin for weight loss and I quickly noticed a difference in my fingernails. They were noticeably longer, thicker, and stronger. I did a little research to discover that Biotin has been indeed proven to help with nail growth.

And while I did lose a few pounds (I have no clue if Biotin was the true cause of that), I can say for sure it made a world of a difference on my nails.

You can take Biotin alone or with Vitamin B6 because they both help produce the keratin protein found in nails. Along with keratin, Biotin also helps with the production of collagen and elastin fibers which is found beneath the nail and also promotes healthy nail growth.

So, if you struggle and feel embarrassed with your nail appearance, give Biotin a try.

You just might lose a few pounds as an extra bonus. You can’t beat that!

Michael Jackson’s Killer Will Not Help Katherine Jackson’s Wrongful Death Lawsuit

Michael Jackson’s former doctor, Dr. Conrad Murray is kind of a douche. Not only did he kill the King of Pop, but he won’t be testifying in Katherine Jackson’s wrongful death lawsuit against AEG Live.

He refused to testify at his own trial in 2011 and has been convicted of involuntary manslaughter. As a result, he was sentenced to four years in the slammer. Now that Katherine Jackson is going after AEG, Conrad refuses to testify and doesn’t want to incriminate himself. This douchebag probably doesn’t believe that he’s done anything wrong… And he wonders why he gets no sympathy when he constantly whines about prison conditions and his health concerns.

In a sworn statement addressed to the Jacksons and Katherine’s lawyer, he refused any assistance. Katherine’s lawyer said “He would not answer anyquestions at the deposition or the trial.”

Katherine is suing AEG for $40 billion, the amount she claims her son would have made if they weren’t negligent in hiring and supervising Dr. Murray. The trial will begin on April 2, 2013. Stay tuned…

Republicans Say Obama Hates Israel – Israel Gives Obama The Highest Civilian Honor

If President Obama really hates Israel like Republicans here in America would want you to believe, then why have the people of Israel awarded Mr. Obama the highest civilian honor in their country? Maybe, and I’m only guessing here, but just maybe, Republicans were lying all along. Maybe their claim that Obama is not liked Israel is just another political charade on their part, to get the Jewish vote.

During a dinner where President Obama was awarded the Honor, Israel’s President Shimon Peres said;

“It is my privilege to present you with our country’s highest honor, the Medal of Distinction. This award speaks to your tireless work to make Israel strong. And peace possible. Your presidency has given the close ties between Israel and the United States a new height. A sense of intimacy. A vision for the future. The people of Israel are particularly moved by your unforgettable contribution to their security. To defending our skies. To the collaboration in the domain of intelligence, which is the right way to preempt bloodshed. The diplomatic and military bonds between us have reached an unprecedented level.

“When I visited you in Washington, I thought in my heart: America is so great and we are so small. But I learned that you don’t measure us by size, but by values. When it comes to values, we are you and you are us.

“On occasion, when we were alone, you stood with us. So we were not alone. We were alone together. We shall never forget it. During your previous visit to Israel, you asked me if I had any advice to offer. It is not in my nature to let questions go unanswered. So I suggested that while people say that the future belongs to the young, it is the present that really belongs to the young.”

Sexy y Funny Boricua, Carlos Santos

Wondering who that fine latino dude with the cute smile on those new MetroPCS ads is?

He’s actor, comedian Carlos Santos!

A mini bio that I found on IMBd:

Carlos Santos was the host of MTV Tr3s’ ‘Mi TRL’ as well as the comedy variety show ‘Entertainment As A Second Language’.

On MTV Tr3s, he had the opportunity to improvise and perform sketches with several comedic giants including Steve Carrell, George Lopez, Adam Sandler, and Carlos Mencia to name a few.

Carlos has B.A in Theatre Arts and received his formal Improv training from the folks at UCB and Second City.

He performed stand-up on Comedy Central’s Funaticos and on Mun2’s Loco Comedy Jam back in the day.

He got his start as a host and segment producer for the bilingual music variety show LATV Live soon after moving to Los Angeles.

Along with performing the kind of comedy that’ll have you shooting things out your nostrils if you’re not careful, Carlos is also a talented actor with featured roles in movies “Ghost Team One”, dubbed a horror/comedy, which made its world premiere at the 2013 Slamdance Film Festival and is making its rounds on the festival circuit as we speak, “Es Mejor Escucharlo” (It’s Better When You Hear It) the story of a man trying to cope with his terminally ill father, and his self-directed comedy short, “Fuera de Lugar” (Out Of Place) a hilarious production about a day in the life of a young PR man living in Los Angeles, trying to put his life and his career as an aspiring actor in perspective, just to name a few.

Easily making it to the No. 2 spot on my “Sexy Men Who Fertilize My Eggs Just By Looking At ‘Em” List for 2013 (Sorry Carlos, but I discovered No. 1, the crooner Miguel first. Latino men are holding 2013 down! ), Carlos has that much sought after male combo of fresh-faced innocence, big mischievous grin, big brown bedroom-eyes and crazy sense of humor all wrapped up in a tight, compact package. Too sexy for his vest!

To round things off,  Mr. Santos has an angelic side to him too. He’s involved in a community outreach program that offers improv workshops to high school kids in Fresno, California and he takes part in a group called Open Window Entertainment, which performs children’s theater in and out of  the Los Angeles area. He also volunteers his time to the Friends of Lockwood organization, a charity that helps underprivileged children enjoy their time in school. Stomach fluttering yet Ladies?

And now the real stats, of which there aren’t many with much juice to them I’m afraid — like who’s he’s dating, if he’s (choke ) married and what’s his shirt size…

  • Born April 9th (won’t say what year, so no one tries to call me out with mine : )
  • Studied at Second City Hollywood
  • Lives in Los Angeles, California
  • Born in  Levittown, Puerto Rico
  • Personal playlist: Anyone from Calle 13, Robi Draco Rosa and Gilberto Santa Rosa, to Lenny Kravitz, Volumen Cero, Julio Voltio and Incubus, to Maná, Victor Manuel, Tego Calderón, Pharrell, Spigga, Enjambre, Shakira, Black Guayaba, Soraya, and some 50 Cent, The Presidents of the United States, Justin Timberlake and Pitbull.
  • Speaks fluent Spanish and is completely capable of doing 21 different authentic Spanish accents. His mom wants everyone to know that her son also does amazing impressions and original characters. : )

That’s all I’ve got for now until Carlos Santos’ star begins to shine even brighter, which I fully expect it will! ♦

Later pilgrims…

Rihanna Keeps School Kids Waiting Over Four Hours

Looks like someone’s been taking cues from Justin Bieber.

Rihanna was more than four hours late to an appearance at a suburban Chicago high school on Friday … without a word to explain her extreme tardiness.

Although the event was set to begin at 1 p.m., the 2500 teens sat crammed inside Barrington High School’s gymnasium until the “Stay” singer made her grand entrance well after the clock struck 5 p.m. (Around 4:22 p.m., she tweeted that she was stuck in traffic.)

When she finally did show, Rihanna told the kids – winners of a video contest she sponsored – simply “Thank you guys for coming and waiting.” She then said some words of gratitude for their charity work, posed for a few photos, and then 16 minutes later, she was back out the door.

Although Rihanna may not have told the kids herself that she was sorry, Principal Steve McWilliams did say that the pop star had called him earlier in the day to apologize for initially planning to come an hour late at 2 p.m. … but clearly she didn’t make it anywhere near that time either.

Powerball: One Winning Ticket Sold In New Jersey

A single ticket sold in New Jersey matched all six numbers in Saturday night’s drawing for the $338.3 million Powerball jackpot, lottery officials said. It was the 13th drawing held in the days since a Virginia man won a $217 million jackpot Feb. 6.

Thirteen other tickets worth $1 million each matched all but the final Powerball number on Saturday night. Those tickets were sold in New Jersey and 10 other states. Lottery officials said there was also one Power Play Match 5 winner in Iowa.

The New Jersey Lottery said Sunday that details about the winning ticket would be released Monday, declining to reveal where it had been purchased and whether anyone had immediately come forward. It was the sixth largest jackpot in history.

The numbers drawn were 17, 29, 31, 52, 53 and Powerball 31. A lump sum payout would be $221 million.

Lottery officials said the 13 tickets worth $1 million apiece – matching the first five numbers but missing the Powerball – were sold in Arizona, Florida (2), Illinois, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania (2), South Carolina and Virginia.

Powerball said on its website that the grand prize jackpot has now been reset to an estimated $40 million or a lump sum cash amount estimated at $25 million for Wednesday’s next drawing.
