Meet Chuck Taylor: The Man Behind The All Star

The man behind the best-selling basketball sneakers of all time is in the Basketball Hall of Fame and is still a household name even though his career ended years ago. No, it’s not Michael Jordan. We’re talking about Chuck Taylor.

This story originally aired on Nov. 2, 2013

Millions of people around the world wear Chuck Taylor’s name on their ankles every day. His signature has appeared on the high-top, canvas All Star sneakers since 1932.

In Harvard Square in Cambridge, Mass., there’s a steady stream of college students, tourists, hipsters … and Chuck Taylors. On a sunny October afternoon, Morgan Goldstein was sporting a multi-colored pair of high tops. The 23-year-old has owned several pairs of All Stars.

“They’re comfortable. They’re classic,” Goldstein said. “My parents wore them. My mom thinks it’s weird that I’m still wearing them because that’s what she wore when she was a kid.”

Aleem Ahmed, 29, was wearing black low-tops. Ahmed has no problem explaining why he likes the sneakers, but like most Chucks owners, he’s less certain about Taylor’s story.

“I only know him from the sneakers. Maybe he has a skateboarding background? I don’t know,” he said.

Abraham Aamidor wrote a biography of Taylor published in 2006 titled Chuck Taylor, All Star.

“It became like Betty Crocker in a sense. If you were a cook, you knew the name Betty Crocker. There was no such person as Betty Crocker. But there really was such a person as Chuck Taylor. Most Americans didn’t know that,” Aamdior said. “People who were buying his shoes by the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and beyond, they just thought of Chuck Taylor as a brand. His brand grew with the shoe even as his persona, the real persona, was lost.”

A Player In Basketball’s Early Days

Charles Taylor was born in 1901, just ten years after Dr. James Naismith is credited with inventing the game of basketball. Taylor grew up in Columbus, Indiana and played for the Columbus High Bull Dogs. He graduated in 1919 and eventually landed in Akron, Ohio where he played for the Firestone Non-Skids, a semi-pro team owned by the tire manufacturer. But in 1922, he accepted a job as a salesman at Converse, and basketball was a critical part of his position.

Joe Dean worked for Converse for nearly 30 years, ending his tenure as a vice president. When Dean was hired in 1959, Taylor was already a giant at the company and in the world of basketball.

“He loved the game [of basketball]. He loved being a part of it. He put on clinics all over the country, helping kids learn how to play a little bit better,” said Dean, who later served as the athletic director at Louisiana State University and is in the College Basketball Hall of Fame.

“He was a loveable guy and fun to be around and a nice guy, and he, at one point, knew every college basketball coach in the country. And if you wanted to hire a coach, you went through him. He’d recommend somebody.”

In the 1920s and ’30s, Taylor played on Converse’s own team and generated publicity in local newspapers with countless basketball clinics. The self-promotion paid off. The All Star sneaker had debuted in 1917 and Converse added Taylor’s name 15 years later, but Aamidor says customers had already made the switch.

“People would order ‘Chuck’s shoe’ or ‘Chuck Taylor’s shoe’ instead of the Converse All-Star. So his signature was added just under the five-point star. Brilliant marketing, brilliant branding.”

Taylor never asked for a royalty for having his name on the shoe. Air Jordans have earned Michael Jordan far more money than he ever made as a player, but Converse gave Taylor a full expense account and commission. By the time he retired in the mid-1960s, Taylor had been out on the road selling for more than 40 years. He married and divorced then married again later in life, but had no children. Dean says Taylor had no regrets.

“He went years without having a house or an apartment or anything. He lived out of a hotel 365 days a year. And that was happy for him. Christmas Day was just another day to him. Converse paid for Christmas. They were just glad he didn’t ask for a little extra change for his name,” Dean said, laughing.

New nail salon for guys offers free beer and a man cave

When you’re in your local nail salon getting a manicure and a guy walks in for a treatment, do you judge him? Do you give him the side-eye because you don’t want any–eww–males in your serene space? Well, even if you don’t do either of these things, guys who go to nail salons feel like you do. That’s why one LA entrepreneur is opening an all-male nail salon, called Hammer & Nails.

Screenwriter Michael Elliot (he wrote Just Wright, a romantic comedy starring Common and Queen Latifah) had an “a-ha” moment when he went to a nail salon in LA and struck up a conversation with the only other dude in the place. “It was just clear that we both felt uncomfortable, and we talked about how uncomfortable this is. I asked a lot of my other guy friends about their experiences and realized I wasn’t alone,” Elliot told me. “I have always hated going to get a mani just because of that feeling of walking in the door and it seems like all the women kind of look at you like, ‘What are you doing here?’ and it’s just awful.”

Hammer & Nails, which opens on Melrose Avenue in LA on November 9, is designed to look like a man-cave. The chairs are oversize leather, there’s a vintage punching bag from the 1940′s, and everyone gets his own TV and headphones, complete with a selection of premium sports channels. (I guess guys aren’t into engaging in nail salon gossip.) There will also be a selection of free beverages. Elliot doesn’t have a liquor license yet, but the goal is to offer complimentary beer and scotch.

The menu includes a standard manicure for $25 and a pedicure for $30. He acknowledges that his prices are about 20% higher than an average salon–he says he’s going for a more luxury vibe, and it’s difficult to stay as competitive as the more traditional salons do.

And the manicures won’t necessarily all involve just a buff or clear polish. “I do plan to offer [colored polishes] here. It wasn’t my original plan until I read an article in the New York Timesvery recently about this growing popularity of colors for guys,” Elliot said. “So I want to make that available here as well.”

Elliot’s goal is to get red-blooded American males to engage in regular nail care. “There’s this misconception that only metrosexual men would get a mani or pedi, or only gay men,” Elliot said. “I want to make nail care as common as getting a haircut and I feel like creating the right environment is key to that.” He thinks that there’s an untapped market out there of men who have never had a manicure because the typical nail salon is too intimidating, but who want to try one.

T&A won’t be a part of the draw at the salon, though. I asked him about hiring Hooters-style nail techs and he said, “Absolutely not. In fact the very first nail tech I hired has been doing men’s manicures for 38 years.” Elliot’s goal is to hire techs who enjoy working on men’s nails and who have a lot of experience doing so.

While some of Elliot’s friends think he’s nuts (the whole business venture is self-funded), he’s confident he has a winning concept. He hopes to open another Hammer & Nails LA outpost within 12 months, and to start franchising in 2014. He says he’s already received inquiries about franchise opportunities.

I actually think this whole concept makes a lot of sense. And I think you’d have more luck getting your boyfriend into a place like this to get his disgusting feet taken care of than into your standard girly salon.

This Victoria’s Secret Model Also Codes In Her Free Time

Lyndsey Scott

As much as we try to fight it, most people have a very stereotypical image come to mind when they think of coders and software entrepreneurs: pale, unshaven, twenty-something males.

Lyndsey Scott is none of those things. Though passionate about acting, she majored in computer science in college and then went on to become a model for brands such as Victoria’s Secret, Gucci, and Prada.

Despite her success on the runway, Lyndsey never lost her passion for coding. While she chose not to take the traditional route with a software engineering job at a firm in Manhattan or the Silicon Valley, she continued to work on apps in her free time, with projects ranging from an app that lets you learn about and fund youth education in Africa to an app that lets actors and models create professional-looking portfolios with the ease that only an iPad app can deliver.

We first learned about Lyndsey and her surprising workload from her profile on Stack Overflow, a site that lets programmers ask questions about their code and get helpful responses from other members of the community with expertise on specific topics.

She’s something of a celebrity on the site: users gain reputation points for providing helpful answers and the site keeps track of the number of views each profile attracts. To date, she’s gained over 1,000 reputation points and her profile has been viewed over 38,000 times.

Earlier this week, Lyndsey and I had a chat about her modeling and coding careers. Read on for her thoughts on developing for iOS over Android, being a “lurker” on a coding forum, and what it takes to get young women into coding and computers.

Michelle Obama Tells Of Her Biggest Fashion Mistake – Wearing Short Pants

In an appearance on BET’s 106 & Park, The First Lady of the United States was asked a question about any regrets she might have with her wardrobe. The First Lady answered;

“I am kind of always happy with what I’m wearing, I think,” she said. “Sometimes I forget I’m the first lady and I’m running around in shorts. I know the first time we went on a family vacation, I had shorts on getting off of Air Force One and that created a huge stink because people were like, ‘She’s wearing shorts getting off of Air Force One!’ And I thought, ‘What? We’re on vacation!’ It was hot!” She added, “So I’ve avoided shorts getting off of Air Force One.”

Sasha Obama Wears Unicorn Sweater, Unicorn Sweaters Go Extinct

On Sunday, Sasha Obama wore a sweater with a unicorn on it to a basketball game. By Thursday, unicorn sweaters had gone extinct. (Is “extinct” the word for a sweater selling out?Maybe it should be.)

According to the Huffington Post, as soon as Sasha took her courtside seat at the Maryland Terps women’s basketball game on Sunday, Twitter lit up with adoration of the younger Obama daughter’s chosen top. Where did she get it? WHERE CAN I GET ONE? Are those Obama girls the best or what?

By the next day, sleuths had determined that the sweater was from Asos and was reduced in price from upwards of $60 to under $20. Unfortunately, by then, the item was OUT OF STOCK.

It gets worse: not only is the sweater not currently available for purchase, according to the company’s Twitter account, it might not ever be available for purchase again. But don’t cry, aspiring Sashalikes; luckily, sweaters with animals knit onto them are sort of trendy right now.

Why Grow Your Own Chest Hair When You Can Wear A Coat Made Out of Someone Else’s?

Branden Lee is a blogger, screenwriter, producer, and actor, currently residing in Boston, MA. Follow Branden on Twitter and Tumblr.

According to Jezebel, a company called Wing Co. is selling a coat made out of the collected chest hair of a bunch of men, to combat the growing trend of men feeling required to be hairless.

The hair jacket is currently being sold for £2,499, about $3900 and was created using over 1 million different strands of chest hair.

There’s also a version available for women.

As much as I love a hairy man, there’s no way I’d ever want to wear a coat made out strangers’ body hair.

But I’m sure someone will buy it.

Probably Kanye West, he’ll wear anything.

Do You Have a Gift for Mom’s Day?

You can give a great gift for mom and not break the budget.  Here are a few gifts that are easy to find and a bit different from the traditional Hallmark card and bouquet of flowers.

Fun Fashion Gifts for Mom

Think: “spot of color.”

This season is full of accessories from shoes to scarves that are bright, colorful and fun.

It might be hard to pick Mom a winning wardrobe piece.  But accessories are fun, easy and (usually) affordable.  I really like the scarf idea.

1.  Fun and Colorful  Scarf

Scarves of every shape and color are popping up in stores.  You can spend as much or as little as you want.   From department stores to Anne Taylor’s Loft, scarves are priced from $12.95 to $39.50.

2.   Fun, high end costume jewelry

High end fashion jewelry is a step above Claire’s.  It’s quality without the gems (or the cost).  Go for something fun and trendy by shopping at Anne Taylor Loft, department stores (the jewelry on the rack, not under the glass) and look for the sales!  This is when all the procrastinators can benefit from late shopping.

The pickings may be a bit slim but the sales will be good between now and Mom’s Day.

3.  A trip to Paris….or not.

Has  mom always wanted to visit (or revisit) the City of Lights?  Get her the next best thing- a book that will transport her mind to beautiful Paris!

Check out these books:

“Lessons from Madame Chic: 20 Stylish Secrets I Learned While Living in Paris” is a fun book by Jennifer L. Scott about translating Parisian fashion culture into our American lifestyles.  On sale at Amazon, Barnes & Nobles and bookstores in both ebook and print formats.

Another fun read for moms who love Paris and cooking.  While “My Life in France” is the story of Julia Child’s early years, it was not published until after her death.  The books was co-written by Julia and her grand-nephew.  Julia passed away in 2004 and her nephew finished the book (and wrote a very touching introduction).  “My Life in France” was published in 2006.

3.  Make Mom brunch!

I’m all about families returning to the kitchen and cooking together.  As Julia Child was known for saying frequently, “Cooking together is such fun!”  Instead of asking mom to cook, make her a cup of coffee and invite her to sit in the kitchen and talk while you cook!

If you have siblings in town, get them involved too.  Have someone take pictures.  Put on some music.

It’s Mom’s Day!  Have fun!

4.  For many of us, our moms are not close enough to see or visit.  Stick a card in the mail.  For extra fun, remember a funny memory or recall something special she did in the past and thank her for it.  Include a picture of when you were a kid.  Sometimes it’s the little things that touch a mom’s heart the most.

5.  Do something with all those photos!

Shutterfly is offering a 40% discount on photo books this week!  For less than $15.00 you can give your mom a hardback book full of pictures of you, the grandkids, memories, quotes, letters, etc.

This is a fun gift that will not be forgotten!

These are so much fun to do.  (warning:  they are also a bit addictive!)  Check out http://www.shutterfly.com

O.k. so this won’t get her by this Sunday.  But, you can do what I’ve done in the past and make a “It’s Coming!!!!” card with a picture of the gift.

BONUS:  When in doubt, Amazon.com is a fabulous source of gift items. Plus, with their expedited shipping items, you can get mom’s gift to her in time.  So whether it’s a “I Love Lucy” DVD, the latest James Patterson novel or a fancy cookware gadget, Amazon mostly likely has it and can deliver.

Melissa AuClair blogs at www.launchyourcreativelife.com, a website for location independent women creatives.   This week she’s working on recipe development and photo styling Mom’s Day desserts to be featured on her latest endeavor www.bakeperfectcookies.com (with a book soon to follow).  You can follow her at Twitter @Melissauclair
