Clinical trials show high levels of the mineral Selenium can raise chances of developing high-grade cancer by 91%
Men have been warned not to take a pair of popular vitamin and mineral supplements after research showed they can dramatically increase the risk of life-threatening prostate cancer.
Overdosing on the mineral selenium by taking supplements raised the chances of developing high-grade cancer by 91%, scientists found.
Vitamin E pills also boosted the risk of aggressive cancer, more than doubling it for men lacking selenium.
The researchers believe selenium can turn toxic when present in the body at excessively high levels.
At the same time, the mineral appeared to protect against the harmful effects of too much vitamin E.
The US study was a follow-up of Select, the selenium and vitamin E cancer prevention trial, which originally recruited more than 35,000 men to see if the supplements could help prevent prostate cancer.
Researchers stopped the trial three years early in 2008 after there were hints that instead of protecting men, vitamin E was putting them at greater risk, while selenium showed no benefit.
A subsequent comparison of 1,739 participants diagnosed with prostate cancer and 3,117 matched cancer-free individuals highlighted the supplement hazards.
Study leader Dr Alan Kristal, from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in Seattle, said: “These supplements are popular – especially vitamin E – although so far no large, well-designed and well-conducted study has shown any benefits for preventing major chronic disease.
House Bill 2699, introduced by Rep. Gail Finney, D-Wichita, would have allowed parents to hit children hard enough to leave redness or bruising. It also would have allowed parents to give permission to others, including caregivers or teachers, to spank their children.
In a statement posted on her website, Finney said the legislation “is not, as has been incorrectly reported, intended to legalize child abuse in Kansas.”
“Parental corporal discipline in Kansas, along with 49 other states, has always been permitted,” Finney said in the statement. “Unfortunately, Kansas has never affirmatively, expressly defined corporal discipline in Kansas statute, leaving the interpretation of that matter to administrative officials in the executive branch, law enforcement personnel, and the judicial branch.”
She said the bill was intended to “provide guidance to officials.
You’d be happy to know the bill is not going to be taken up by the House.
As her nephew started turning blue, Pamela Rauseo panicked.
She didn’t want anything bad to happen to 5-month-old Sebastian de la Cruz, who was born premature and with respiratory issues. So Rauseo stopped her SUV along Miami’s Dolphin Expressway Thursday and screamed for help.
She started giving the baby CPR.
Rauseo hadn’t performed CPR in years.
“I don’t know how I remembered what to do … I just knew I couldn’t let him die,” she told ABC News.
With traffic at a standstill, fellow drivers began to help. Lucila Godoy left her own son in the car to assist in CPR and comfort Rauseo. Miami Herald photographer Al Diaz ran through lanes of traffic to alert police officers before capturing the tense scene.
Officer Amauris Bastidas arrived, helping as Rauseo twice got the baby breathing again.
Rescue crews took Sebastian to the hospital. He was photographed later that day in his mother Paola’s arms, smiling, the color returned to his face.
Rauseo, 37, works in interior design. She runs Round321, a company dedicated to designing innovative and unique pieces for parents and children. One of her room designs is called “Sebastian’s Circus” and features stylized elephants and a play tent.
Calm down folks. The bounty is not on him being killed, it’s on his capture.

Feeling pressure from other Republicans who themselves are running or will run for office, Ted Nugent went on CNN earlier today and offered somewhat of an almost oh by the way apology, not so much to President Obama, but to all the “much better” men out there… namely the Republican men.
“I do apologize–not necessarily to the President–but on behalf of much better men than myself,” he said in an interview with conservative radio host Ben Ferguson, who’s also a CNN political commentator.
Texas attorney general Greg Abbott, the likely GOP gubernatorial nominee this year, came under heavy criticism from Democrats this week for campaigning with Nugent, who’s known for making outlandish comments about the President.
Nugent said he apologizes “for using the streetfighter terminology of ‘subhuman mongrel’ instead of just using more understandable language, such as ‘violator of his own- the Constitution.”
In his apology, Nugent appeared to regret more the fact that his language has been tied to Republican politicians from his state, such as Abbott, Gov. Rick Perry, and Sen. Ted Cruz.
“I apologize for using the term,” he said. “I will try to elevate my vernacular to the level of those great men that I’m learning from in the world of politics.”
While Perry and Cruz both said they found Nugent’s comment inappropriate, they didn’t rule out campaigning with him.
I’m glad this scene wasn’t included in the show. I had the impression that the two sisters were kept separated while growing up until they met again at the coronation ceremony, and this clip showed a different side to them growing up.
I would have been disappointed. I don’t like being disappointed.

There seems to be some controversy surrounding something Michelle Obama said on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show last night.
Speaking about the importance of healthcare and young people, The First Lady made a statement that is considered by most, if not all, to be true.
We were all young, or younger at one point in our lives and healthcare was never a concerned. We all thought we were invincible. We took chances and did crazy things that, looking back on some on those decisions now, could be considered dumb decisions, knucklehead moves.
The First Lady made that observation in last night’s shiw and the right is having a field day, lambasting Michelle Obama for calling young people knuckleheads.
Of course the agree with the First Lady, but because she’s an Obama and a Democrat, her statement is now controversial.

The Republican’s favorite mouthpiece besides the likes of Rush Limbaugh and the cast of jokers at Fox News, is a dude name Ted Nugent. Yes, you know this guy or you have heard of him. He recently made news when he spewed some of his normal hate mongering speech against President Obama by calling the president “a Chicago, Communist- raised, Communist-educated, Communist-nurtured, subhuman mongrel.”
What Nugent said about the president was just normal Nugent talk. In previous statements, he’s compared the president to a “chimpanzee” among other things and have even threatened the president causing the Secret Service to pay him a visit.
Yes, Nugent is vile and the Republicans love him.
That love for Nugent is what led to his invitation to speak at a campaign event for a Republican candidate for governor of Texas and that is where his “subhuman mongrel” comment about the president turned into a controversy. Why would anyone invite the likes of Nugent onstage to talk at a campaign event? Greg Abbott, the Republican candidate tried to soften the blows by saying that he was unaware of Nugent’s remarks. But it was already too late as his decision to associate himself with Nugent raised more questions about the Republicans and the hole their party seems determined to stay in.
But again, this is not the first time a Republican bigwig has associated himself with Nugent. When he was running for president of the United States in 2012, Mitt Romney gladly accepted Nugent’s endorsement. Unlike Abbott, Romney couldn’t say that he was unaware of Nugent’s past, but he accepted the endorsement anyway.
Speaking of Nugent’s past, here is a video of one of the rocker’s songs, a song called “Jailbate” where he sung about meeting an underage girl and trying to seduce her. In the song, he’s getting arrested for talking to the ‘jailbate’ and he tells the officer to put the cuffs on the underage girl so that he and the officer could share her.

The man responsible for the death of Usher’s stepson Kile Glover was found guilty in a Georgia courtroom today.
According to reports, Jeffrey Hubbard was convicted on five counts of homicide by vessel, reckless operation and unlawful operation of a personal watercraft.
You may recall the tragic accident. Hubbard was riding a jet ski when he hit the 11-year-old, who was being towed on an inner tube, at Lake Lanier in 2012. He also left another teen severely injured. His attorneys argued that crash was an accident and not linked to recklessness.
Glover, the biological son of Usher’s ex-wife Tameka Raymond, was vacationing with his father Ryan Glover at the time of the accident. He suffered from serious head injuries and a little more than two weeks after the crash he was removed from life support. He was laid to rest on July 27, 2012 amongst family, friends and many members of Atlanta’s music community.
Tameka recently started a foundation to honor her son’s memory.
Donald Maiden Jr., known to family and friends as D.J., was playing tag outside of his home in Dallas. That’s when 46-year-old Brian Cloninger, shot the youth in the face. Cloninger told police that he shot the boy simply because “he wanted to.”
Donald has spent several weeks in the hospital hooked up to life support machines and breathing tubes. He had a metal plate and wire mesh holding his jaw together.
But now, months later D.J.’s mother, Monique Locklin says he is doing “much better.”
Donald still has a tracheotomy tube in his neck to help with breathing. He has continued reconstructive surgery scheduled for March 10th. But considering what he’s been through, his recovery is remarkable.
“He goes to school, he still plays outside,” his mother said. “Light playing, but he still does everything pretty normally like he would before. As his face enhances he’ll have to keep on getting it fixed.”
But beyond the physical scares, Donald has been severely psychologically impacted by the hate crime.
“He’s afraid,” D.J.’s mother explained, that once Cloninger gets out of jail he will come after him and will hurt him or “hurt somebody else.
“He has nightmares almost every night. He won’t sleep alone, and he wakes up almost every night crying because he has nightmares.”
As for Cloninger, D.J.’s mother explained, “I just want to see him get punished to the maximum, and I just want justice for what he did, because it really was unnecessary and just cruel. I don’t want him to be able to be free so he could do that to someone else.”
