President Obama continued his personal tradition at this year’s White House Correspondents Dinner, of being the funniest man on the room.
Watch, as even Boehner’s color got a laugh with this remark, “These days, House Republicans are giving [Speaker John Boehner] a harder time than they give me – which means orange really is the new black,”
The President even went after Chris Christie when he spoke about the partisan gridlock in Washington, saying that partisan gridlock “has gotten so bad in this town – you’ve got to wonder, ‘What did we do to piss off Chris Christie so bad?”
There’s an analogy used in the piece that sums up this judge’s decision, and that analogy is – having a rapist watch over rape victims it’s like having a pedophile in charge at a children’s day care. In other words, it makes no sense!
A Texas judge ordered an admitted rapist to spend 45 days in jail, plus 5 years probation and 250 hours of community service at a rape crisis center where volunteers work directly with victims, reports CBS DFW.
Sir Young, 20, was sentenced Friday as part of a plea deal for raping a 14-year-old girl on their high school campus when he was 18, according to the station.
He had faced a maximum of 20 years in prison, according to the Dallas Morning News.
“When probation called, they asked, ‘Is this possible?’ I said, ‘No, it’s not possible’,” Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center (DARCC) executive director Bobbie Villareal told CBS DFW.
DARCC is the only rape crisis center in Dallas that uses volunteers, and it requires them to clear a criminal background check. Volunteers work directly with victims, answering their calls to the hotline and assisting them during rape exams. They also work with local organizations like the Girl Scouts and attend public events doing community outreach with police, according to the station.
“It flies in the face of logic. First of all, in that you would ask someone to do their community supervision for the population that has been directly affected by the exact crime. That’s like saying a pedophile should do their community supervision helping at a pre-school,” Villareal said.
Scott Berkowitz, president and founder of of the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN), agrees that it’s not a logical idea to have a rapist spend time with rape victims.
“It’s incredibly hard to get [sexual assault] survivors to report in the first place and when they see sentences like this, it’s just more discouragement,” Berkowitz told CBS News’ Crimesider.
Condoleeza Rice was scheduled to give a Commencement speech and receive an Honorary doctorate from Rutgers on May 18th, but the students protested, blaming Rice and the Bush administration for falsely taking America into war and calling them “war criminals.”
The protests were heated at times, with students and faculty alike denouncing Rice’s involvement. The school’s president Robert Barchi however, would not budge and issued a statement that Rice should be allowed to speak, citing things about free speech and diverse opinions and the like. Barchi wrote;
“Like our fellow citizens, you and I, our colleagues, have deep and sincerely held beliefs and convictions that often stand in stark contrast to others around us. Yet, we cannot protect free speech or academic freedom by denying others the right to an opposing view, or by excluding those with whom we may disagree. Free speech and academic freedom cannot be determined by any group. They cannot insist on consensus or popularity.”
Rice however, realizing the unnecessary friction her appearance was causing – and no doubt the guilt of being called a war criminal – Rice issued her own statement today refusing the invite and the $35000 appearance fee that went along with it.
In her statement earlier today, Rice said;
“Commencement should be a time of joyous celebration for the graduates and their families. Rutgers’ invitation to me to speak has become a distraction for the university community at this very special time.
I am honored to have served my country. I have defended America’s belief in free speech and the exchange of ideas. These values are essential to the health of our democracy. But that is not what is at issue here. As a Professor for thirty years at Stanford University and as it’s former Provost and Chief academic officer, I understand and embrace the purpose of the commencement ceremony and I am simply unwilling to detract from it in any way.
Good luck to the graduates and congratulations to the families, friends and loved ones who will gather to honor them.”
At least she has a conscience! If only Bush and Cheney could come to their senses and take some responsibility for the thousands of American troops lost and the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians killed. But, that just wishful thinking on my part I guess…
This act is obviously illegal in New York, especially when there are passengers on board. But that didn’t stop this veteran bus driver, who has driven a bus since 1993, from getting out his phone and fiddling with it, while driving the bus.
Maybe he was bored!
The video was provided by a passenger named Maria. She said she began recording the driver at the Lincoln tunnel and the driver/phone relationship continued through much of the way to Staten Island.
The driver has since been suspended for 20 days without pay. According to authorities, if it happens again, he will be fired. Let’s hope a second infraction would not too late.
Go Patriots, Go! Enough with the threats already, be your own nation. And take the rest of the Republican party with you. America is tied of having you tied around its neck like an anvil, impeding progress and dragging the country down in the pits.
The Wisconsin Republican Party will be voting this weekend on whether it endorses the right to secede from the rest of the country and nullify any federal law, a clear departure from the legacy of Abraham Lincoln.
Daniel Bice at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that delegates at the state Republican convention will consider a measure on Saturday “that directs lawmakers to push through legislation nullifying Obamacare, Common Core educational standards and ‘drone usage in the state of Wisconsin.'”
It also asserts the right, “under extreme circumstances,” to secede from the United States of America
What a great dude! 19 year old Austin Dennison’s great-grandmother never got to go to a prom when she was a teen…so he invited her, 89 years old, to be his date to the school’s prom.
The DJ even played a Frank Sinatra song she loved for her. Awesome story!
The bad thing about this circus show is that it’s costing the American tax payer millions and millions of dollars. But that fact will not stop the Republicans from continuing their witch hunt in the Republican-made Benghazi scandal.
With multiple hearings, millions of tax dollars wasted and thousands of documents alreadt submitted by the administration, Republicans have decided that another hearing us in order. Today, House Speaker John Boehner and chief time waster organized a new commission tasked with doing something they’ve apparently never tried… investigating Benghazi!
OMG!
House Republicans will convene a select committee to investigate the 2012 Benghazi terrorist attacks — a dramatic move that is sure to rev up the GOP base ahead of the midterm elections.
The creation of the panel, which Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) announced on Friday, comes the same day that House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) issued a subpoena to force Secretary of State John Kerry to testify about the attacks.
An estimated 200 million people still using Microsoft’s mothballed operating system Windows XP are at risk of cyberattack, experts warned.
The U.S. technology giant stopped support for XP in April, meaning users will not get critical security updates, leaving the OS open to hacking and attack.
Research firm IDC outlined the large number of consumers and businesses under threat, showing that 200 million users are still on XP, while the OS has 26.2 percent market share, according to Netmarketshare numbers.
“You’re talking about 200 million computers running XP, simply put, they are open,” Ernest Hilbert, former FBI agent and head of cyber investigations for EMEA at risk consultancy Kroll, told CNBC in a phone interview.
Heartbleed, IE threat
This comes amid a series of cybersecurity concerns over the past few weeks. The so-called “Heartbleed bug” was discovered by researchers last month in OpenSSL software—an encryption service used by around two-thirds of websites to protect information sent to and from web pages.
“Just because this update is out now doesn’t mean you should stop thinking about getting off Windows XP and moving to a newer version of Windows and the latest version of Internet Explorer,” Adrienne Hall, general manager of Trustworthy Computing at Microsoft, said in an official blog post on Thursday.
But not all security experts agree the end of XP support could be fatal due to the outdated nature of the software.
“A lot of them will be old PCs and not being used for critical stuff. They are grannies and granddads keeping in touch with distant grandchildren,” Bob Tarzey, analyst and director at Quocirca, an IT analysis firm.
“The bottom line is XP doesn’t have the horse power to do a lot of the things people want to do on PCs nowadays. I doubt that computers running Windows XP are mission-critical.”
Fearless: An 8-year-old Virginia boy identified as Martin Cobb was beaten to death trying to defend his older sister from a rapist
A community in Richmond, Virginia, is reeling after an eight-year-old boy was beaten to death while trying to protect his 12-year-old sister from a rapist.
The boy, identified as Martin Cobb, was pronounced dead at the scene in the 200 block of Brandon Road Thursday night.
His sibling, whose name is not being released because of her age and the nature of the crime, was taken to a hospital.
Police have since apprehended the suspect, who turned out to be a black teenager. Initially, the victim described her assailant to as a white man with scraggly facial hair, the local station WWBT reported.
Investigators later determined that the suspect had threatened to kill the 12-year-old girl if she provided police with accurate information about him.
The teenager is currently being evaluated at Tuckers Psychiatric Clinic in Richmond as police are preparing to charge him with murder and assault.
At around 6.30pm Thursday, the brother and sister were playing by the train tracks near their home when a stranger approached the 12-year-old girl, sexually assaulted her and slashed her face, the kids’ aunt and stepfather told WRIC.

Too young: Martin’s family say the little boy tried to intervene in an effort to protect his big sister, at which point her assailant threw a rock at his head, killing him on the spot
When her 8-year-old brother tried to intervene, the teenage attacker allegedly turned on him, throwing a rock at his head. The child died instantly.
‘To have the courage to defend his sister as if he was a grown man,’ neighbor Sudan Aunu told Richmond Times Dispatch. ‘His sister is alive today because of him.’
Police responded to the scene a short time later after someone saw the 12-year-old girl running naked and covered in blood out of the nearby woods.
The child was taken to a hospital to be treated for bruises and laceration. Her family said she was very distraught by what happened. .
As officers gathered evidence at the scene in the gathering darkness, shaken neighbors gathered in a circle for an impromptu prayer.
False information: The rape victim initially told police her attacker was a grown white man with a scraggly beard, but it was later revealed that he was a black teen
The National Day of Prayer turned overtly political when a Republican Teaparty speaker stood at the podium and called President Obama the “abortion president.”
The occasion of course, was supposed to be nonpolitical and nonpartisan. That is why James Dobson, Founder of the Conservative Christian advocacy group called Focus on the Family was ask to take part in the activities.
But anyone who knows James Dobson, knows that any and every occasion – even a religious activity – could be easily transformed into lunacy and right-wing propaganda. And the intended religious activities of the National Day of Prayer was no match for Dobson’s politics.
“President Obama, before he was elected, made it very clear that he wanted to be the abortion president,” Dobson said, in an apparent lie at the National Day of Prayer. “This is something that he really was going to promote and support, and he has done that, and in a sense is the abortion president.”
Dobson’s speech was so vile and disrespectful, Democratic Representative Janice Hahn walked out in the middle of his speech. In an interview with The Huffington Post Rep. Hahn called Dobson’s speech “inappropriate” and a violation of the nonpartisan Day of Prayer.
“He goes on about healthcare and providing abortions,” Hahn told HuffPost, “and at that point I stood up and I point my finger at Dr Dobson and I said, ‘this is inappropriate!’ And I walked out.”
They are some people who respect the significance of a National Day of Prayer, a day when both sides put away their politics and commune as one people. And then there are those who just don’t know when to stop. Who don’t respect the boundaries even as laid out in the religious context of a National Day of Prayer. We’ll call those disrespectful people “Christian Conservatives.”
Although I am usually hard on the Republicans and I do consider many of them – especially the ones in government – to be racist or to promote racist policies, I think it’s a step too far to pass out KKK hoods at a Republicans State convention.
According to reports however, Brett Hulsey, a Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial candidate, plans to do just that at this weekend’s state Republican convention.
Mr Hulsey refers to the KKK hoods as “Republican party hats.”
When asked if he is concerned that handing out the KKK hoods could be viewed as an offensive gesture, Hulsey answered, “what I find offensive is Governor Walker and the Republicans racist record. They’re the ones considering the resolution to leave the United States.”
Both Democratic and Republican leaders in the state of Wisconsin are denouncing Brett Hulsey’s decision, with a Democratic statement saying that they “take serious issue with the policies pursued by Republicans that disproportionately affect communities of color.” The statement by Democratic Party Chair Mike Tate continued, “but this type of behavior has no place in the public dialogue.”
Hulsey however is not phased. He went on Twitter and posted a photo showing the KKK hats he intends to distribute.
