The Worst Political Era Ever. Except For All The Others

After two weeks of not writing, a function of both intellectual blockage and a terrifically busy work schedule, I find myself confronted with the same news and political reality as existed 14 days ago, only more so. Stories about how dysfunctional our political system is litter the websites, newspapers and social media outlets we visit.

Is it true that we live in the worst of all possible worlds? That our system has become so mired in petty squabbles that it qualifies as the most terrible atmosphere in United States history? Depends on your definition.

Ask Thomas Jefferson, who was accused of hating religion so much that the opposition, John Adams of all people, spread rumors that Jefferson was going to outlaw it. How about “King” Andrew Jackson, who was supposed to be all-powerful and who ignored a Supreme Court decision prohibiting him from moving Native American tribes from Georgia, where there was gold on their land, to Oklahoma, where the land tended to dry up and blow away. Or Andrew Johnson, who was impeached and almost convicted in 1868 for violating a law that was probably unconstitutional to begin with, and had numerous vetoes overridden by a Congress that treated him as an afterthought. Or Harry Truman, who was thought to be harboring Communists in his government, Johnson and Nixon, who were hated for the Vietnam War, violations of civil liberties and the Watergate scandal, and Bill Clinton, ignored, impeached and politically impotent in the face of a concerted Republican majority. Each of these presidents were the targets of opposition slings and arrows who squawked that the end of the republic was at hand.

The genius, and the curse, of our political system is that it’s based on three competing political branches, each of whom is forever concerned about maintaining its power. Cooperation is rare and mostly occurs when one party has a significant majority in both houses.

FDR was able to get major New Deal legislation through Congress with large Democratic majorities, and LBJ did the same with the Great Society programs. Both Nixon and Reagan were able to work with Democratic majorities and that’s why their successes were less ideological than they otherwise would be. GW Bush had Republican majorities in the middle of his term, but Social Security reform was anathema to the left, and immigration reform died because of right wing opposition. As I recall, these were all pitched battles with ruin promised by both sides if their legislation wasn’t passed.

Thus it is today. President Obama had great success in his first two years with Democratic majorities and an important 60 votes in the Senate. After the 2010 elections? Not so much. Yes, the right has an irrational opposition to him and successfully fought back on guns. We’ll get an immigration bill this year because the political stakes for the Republicans are too high for failure. We might even get tax reform. But it would take Democratic majorities in the House and Senate to finish the work that Obama was elected to accomplish, including energy, environmental and bank reform.

So let’s all calm down a bit and understand that while our era is contentious, it’s not the end of the political world. The events of the past four years will reach an endpoint with one party breaking out and leading a new push in their direction. My hunch, and hope, is that it will be the Democrats, but it will probably take a couple of election cycles to achieve.

Until then, the media machine will crank out apocalyptic pronouncements about how bad things are. Don’t you believe it.

At Bathtime, This Five Year Old Shot His Seven Year Old Brother

But don’t worry, the NRA is making loads of money by pushing their lies that everyone must buy guns and give guns to your kids, because the government is coming to take them away!

A 7-year-old boy in Texas is expected to recover after being shot by his 5-year-old brother while the two were taking a bath together on Tuesday.

Officials with the Houston Police Department said that both boys were in the bathtub when the mother stepped away for a brief time. Investigators believed that the younger boy got out of the bathtub and found a rusty bolt-action .22 caliber rifle and shot his older brother.

Sgt. Ryan Gardiner described the injuries as “non-life threatening.”

“It was one bullet hole that went through his lower back,” Gardiner said.

Police were talking with the parents, but no charges had been filed as of Wednesday morning.

Report: Charles Ramsey Was Arrested for Spousal Abuse

As if you didn’t already know this was going to happen. As soon as Charles Ramsey showed his face on television, some in the media started digging, trying to find any and all negative news possible about the new American hero.

Well The Smoking Gun has apparently found what they’ve been looking for. They have issued a report claiming that Charles Ramsey was locked up in the past for spousal abuse.

Ramsey’s first domestic violence charge came in February 1997. He entered a no contest plea a year later and was found guilty of the count by a Cleveland Municipal Court judge. While waiting to be sentenced, Ramsey was again arrested for domestic violence.

At the time of Ramsey’s second collar, in July 1998, he was already the subject of an arrest warrant issued in connection with his failure to appear for a court hearing in the first domestic violence case. As a result, Ramsey was jailed for violating terms of his release on bond. Ramsey subsequently entered a no contest plea to the second case and was, again, found guilty by a Cleveland judge.

The domestic violence cases apparently were consolidated for sentencing in August 1998, when Ramsey was ordered to serve six months in jail, placed on five years probation, and directed to attend a domestic violence counseling program.

Following his release from custody, Ramsey violated probation terms, according to an April 1999 court docket entry. While an arrest warrant was issued for Ramsey, it is unclear from court records whether it was executed before both misdemeanor cases were formally closed several years later.

Why You Can’t Believe Psychics – Prediction That Amanda Berry Was Dead

Remember Sylvia Browne? She is one of the most famous or infamous “psychics” of our time, and she also predicted that Amanda Berry was dead. Of course, we all now know that is not the case, as Amanda herself ran into the arms of a black man earlier this week.

Browne’s prediction about the fate of Amanda Berry was not her first attempt to explain the fate of a child, but her fans on social media demanded acknowledgment from the self-proclaimed spiritual leader.

On Wednesday, Browne released the following through her Facebook page:

For more than 50 years as a spiritual psychic and guide, when called upon to either help authorities with missing person cases or to help families with questions about their loved ones, I have been more right than wrong. If ever there was a time to be grateful and relieved for being mistaken, this is that time. Only God is right all the time. My heart goes out to Amanda Berry, her family, the other victims and their families. I wish you a peaceful recovery.

“I remember you on Montel Williams telling the family of Amanda Berry she was dead,” wrote one commenter on Browne’s Facebook page. “What do you have to say for yourself? What a horrible horrible thing to say to a family holding on to nothing but hope and faith.”

“Can you admit that you’re a hack now?” asked another.

“I hope todays events seal it for you and everyone else who take advantage of those in mourning,” wrote another.

Testimony in the trial lasted four months, beginning in January, and wrapped up on Friday, May 3.

The jury, made up of eight men and four women, deliberated for two and a half days.

Do You Have a Gift for Mom’s Day?

You can give a great gift for mom and not break the budget.  Here are a few gifts that are easy to find and a bit different from the traditional Hallmark card and bouquet of flowers.

Fun Fashion Gifts for Mom

Think: “spot of color.”

This season is full of accessories from shoes to scarves that are bright, colorful and fun.

It might be hard to pick Mom a winning wardrobe piece.  But accessories are fun, easy and (usually) affordable.  I really like the scarf idea.

1.  Fun and Colorful  Scarf

Scarves of every shape and color are popping up in stores.  You can spend as much or as little as you want.   From department stores to Anne Taylor’s Loft, scarves are priced from $12.95 to $39.50.

2.   Fun, high end costume jewelry

High end fashion jewelry is a step above Claire’s.  It’s quality without the gems (or the cost).  Go for something fun and trendy by shopping at Anne Taylor Loft, department stores (the jewelry on the rack, not under the glass) and look for the sales!  This is when all the procrastinators can benefit from late shopping.

The pickings may be a bit slim but the sales will be good between now and Mom’s Day.

3.  A trip to Paris….or not.

Has  mom always wanted to visit (or revisit) the City of Lights?  Get her the next best thing- a book that will transport her mind to beautiful Paris!

Check out these books:

“Lessons from Madame Chic: 20 Stylish Secrets I Learned While Living in Paris” is a fun book by Jennifer L. Scott about translating Parisian fashion culture into our American lifestyles.  On sale at Amazon, Barnes & Nobles and bookstores in both ebook and print formats.

Another fun read for moms who love Paris and cooking.  While “My Life in France” is the story of Julia Child’s early years, it was not published until after her death.  The books was co-written by Julia and her grand-nephew.  Julia passed away in 2004 and her nephew finished the book (and wrote a very touching introduction).  “My Life in France” was published in 2006.

3.  Make Mom brunch!

I’m all about families returning to the kitchen and cooking together.  As Julia Child was known for saying frequently, “Cooking together is such fun!”  Instead of asking mom to cook, make her a cup of coffee and invite her to sit in the kitchen and talk while you cook!

If you have siblings in town, get them involved too.  Have someone take pictures.  Put on some music.

It’s Mom’s Day!  Have fun!

4.  For many of us, our moms are not close enough to see or visit.  Stick a card in the mail.  For extra fun, remember a funny memory or recall something special she did in the past and thank her for it.  Include a picture of when you were a kid.  Sometimes it’s the little things that touch a mom’s heart the most.

5.  Do something with all those photos!

Shutterfly is offering a 40% discount on photo books this week!  For less than $15.00 you can give your mom a hardback book full of pictures of you, the grandkids, memories, quotes, letters, etc.

This is a fun gift that will not be forgotten!

These are so much fun to do.  (warning:  they are also a bit addictive!)  Check out http://www.shutterfly.com

O.k. so this won’t get her by this Sunday.  But, you can do what I’ve done in the past and make a “It’s Coming!!!!” card with a picture of the gift.

BONUS:  When in doubt, Amazon.com is a fabulous source of gift items. Plus, with their expedited shipping items, you can get mom’s gift to her in time.  So whether it’s a “I Love Lucy” DVD, the latest James Patterson novel or a fancy cookware gadget, Amazon mostly likely has it and can deliver.

Melissa AuClair blogs at www.launchyourcreativelife.com, a website for location independent women creatives.   This week she’s working on recipe development and photo styling Mom’s Day desserts to be featured on her latest endeavor www.bakeperfectcookies.com (with a book soon to follow).  You can follow her at Twitter @Melissauclair

Conservatives Want to Impeach Obama for “Wrecking the Stock Market”

Although the stock market just closed at the highest it has ever been, the craziness coming from the conservative movement just cannot take a day off.

Today, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 15,056, an all-time record. For one conservative group, this can only mean one thing: it’s time to impeach President Obama.

That was the message Capitol Hill Daily, a conservative publication based out of Baltimore, sent to Citizen United’s listserv today. They accused President Obama of “wreck[ing] the stock market” and asked readers to take a poll about whether he should be impeached as a result.

From the email:

Dear Concerned Reader,
Fearing the very worst, the nation’s super-rich are unloading their stocks at an alarming rate.

Even more troubling, the wealthiest 1% of Americans, who typically know the most, are the ones most anxious to sell.

You see, Obama just allowed 13 new tax increases to further slow the economy, wreck the stock market and make it even harder on the 12 million Americans already looking for work.

The bigger question is this…
Is Obama’s Latest Tax Screw Up Grounds For Impeachment?

Again, the stock market is in record high territory. But these people are circulating materials asking for the impeachment of the president for wrecking the stock market?

Republicans should be outraged that their leaders think so little of them. Why would you accept information that is known to be a lie? Why are you Republicans so easily fooled?

Southwest Airlines Flight Diverted To Nashville After Passenger Exhibits ‘Suspicious Behavior’

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — An airline official says a Southwest Airlines flight headed for Baltimore was diverted to Nashville after what he described as “suspicious behavior” by a passenger.

The flight originated in Albuquerque on Saturday morning and landed in Nashville at about 1:10 p.m. CDT.

Southwest Airlines spokesman Chris Mainz told The Associated Press that the passenger’s behavior on the plane wasn’t disruptive, but he declined to elaborate.

Nashville International Airport spokeswoman Emily Richard told the AP no arrests were made.

Mainz said police ordered all the passengers off the plane, sent them back through security and examined the plane before passengers were allowed back on. It took off again about 3:55 p.m. CDT.

Mainz could not say whether the passenger in question was allowed back on the flight.

Yale’s Jewish Center Threatened with Arson

NEW HAVEN — Area synagogues and Jewish community agencies are on security alert after graffiti in a Yale University chemistry building threatened arson at Yale’s Slifka Center for Jewish Life later this month.

The graffiti was discovered April 22 in a bathroom at the Sterling Chemistry Lab at 225 Prospect St. Although the university would not release details of the graffiti, those with information about it said it referenced both the Slifka Center and the date May 16. It also appeared to threaten arson.

May 16 is the second day of Shavuot, a Jewish holiday.

NRA Approved: The Bleeding Women Targets – Pic

So you still think the Republicans and their NRA buddies have nothing against women? Then explain this! The NRA has endorsed a target in the shape of a woman, and she “bleeds” when she’s shot.

Anti-violence groups blasted the NRA for endorsing a shooting target that lets vengeful gun nuts open fire on a scantily clad “ex-girlfriend” mannequin and make the busty dummy “bleed.”

“This is outrageous and dangerous,” said Laura Cutilletta, a senior staff attorney at the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. “Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women in the United States.”

“This reprehensible product stokes the fire of relationship violence which already claims far too many of our mothers, daughters and sisters,” she said.

The company that sells the lifelike target — called “The Ex” — was a vendor at the National Rifle Association convention over the weekend in Houston, which drew more than 86,000 people.

Zombie Industries succumbed to criticism Tuesday, changing the name of the dummy to “Alexa.”

To these sickos, this is all fun and games and a way to make some extra cash. You know… capitalism. This same vendor also brought a target in the likeness of a bleeding President Obama zombified.

Don’t be surprised if the next target by this company has the likeness of first graders or elementary school children… 20 to be exact.

We’re sure the NRA wouldn’t mind that either.

A Vermont Man Offers Burial Plot in CT to the family of Tamerlan Tsarnaev

The family of the Boston bombing suspect has been having a difficult time finding a cemetery willing to bury him. A cemetery in Enfield said no, but now the Yale Divinity School graduate is offering a plot in Hamden.

Paul Keane said he would offer the plot inside the Mount Carmel Burial Ground under one condition – that it’s done in memory of his mother, Barbara, who passed away in 1985.

She taught Sunday School for 20 years at the Mount Carmel Church. He said he wants to do this because she taught him “love thine enemy,” even if the enemy is a terrorist.

“This person, no matter how much of a pariah. No matter how despicable. No matter what a leper he is,” Keane told our CBS affiliate station WCAX in Vermont.

Mount Carmel cemetery is the oldest in Hamden and owned by a society. Each plot is owned individually.

In his blog Keane writes, “I own the plot and no one can refuse me access,” but that isn’t sitting well with local residents and those that have loved one buried there.

But, Connecticut residents disagree with Keane.

“He did an act of terrorism against this country, and I don’t think he should be buried on this soil,” said Sandra Marenholz of Cheshire.

People, who have loved ones at the Mount Carmel cemetery, gathered Tuesday as a group to voice their concerns about having the known killer buried in Hamden.

“To have this person who has no connection to town to city to state, sort of unceremoniously dumped here because no one else wants him is a concern,” said Franz Douskey of Hamden.
