The Ear You Put your Phone up to May Say Something about the Person You’re Talking With?

This has to do with right vs. left brain theories, in fact the right and left ears process sound differently, the left hemisphere of the brain dominates over the right in processing different sounds, this actually dominates in processing rapidly changing sounds such as in speech and words, and is important to take into consideration that the left side of the brain is the analytical part of the brain that’s why it is stimulated in processing the information more than the right ear. Same for the right ear, which dominates in processing prolonged tones such as in music and it, is also known as the creative side.

As for the phone calls, generally if you are a caring person you will put the phone to the right ear.  Also, generally, when someone gets a call from someone they care about, they will put the phone to the right ear more frequently than the left.

Why You May Want to Stop Buying Juice Boxes…

“A patient came to an ER after noticing green slime coming up the straw from her Juicy Juice box. Her mom cut open the box – and brought her straight to the doctor.

Her juice box was full of mold—green slime that lined the edges of the box. Apparently moldy juice boxes and juice pouches (such as those made by Capri Sun) are nothing new. If even a tiny bit of air gets into the container molds can grow. Air can get into a juice box through a hole that’s so small you can’t see it, and it doesn’t cause leaking. Such a tiny puncture also permits the sugars in the juice to ferment, turning the product into a form of alcohol.

Juicy Juice and many other kid’s juice products are made without preservatives, permitting mold to grow even more easily.

The good news for my patient is that moldy, fermented juice is usually not very dangerous to drink. An upset stomach and a totally grossed out mom are the most common complications.

5 Reasons Working With Computers Is Bad For You & How to Stay Healthy

Working on the computer may sound like the most relaxed job in the world, but it’s quite the contrary. It’s very tough on your body, which is not used to this modern type of work.

Sitting has long been known to cause back pain and negatively influence circulation, which can promote cardiovascular disease. Extensive use of the keyboard and mouse can lead to stiffening of the muscles in your hands, arms, and neck, as well as inflammation and injuries. Staring at a bright screen for too long can cause dry eyes and headaches. Finally, computer work can be stressful, isolating, and lead to depression and anxiety. In other words, working on the computer is as unhealthy a job as you can imagine.

Let me show you what exactly the culprits are and how you can avoid and fix them.

Sitting Kills You

Whether you do in front of the computer, the TV, or while reading a book, sitting for long stretches of time is a very serious health risk! While sitting, your blood isn’t circulating, your back experiences a steady stress, you are more likely to drink and eat stuff that isn’t good for you, and you burn very little calories, making it more likely that you overeat. As a result, sitting contributes to a host of conditions, most notably gaining weight, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and consequently a shortened life span.

Remedies

Sitting is perfectly good and normal. It’s just when you do it excessively that it turns into a major health risk. So try to loosen it up and play with alternatives. Here is a list of things you should do:

Bad Posture Causes Pain

Bad posture is not necessarily a consequence of sitting. You can develop bad posture from anything you do habitually, whether it’s sitting, standing, or walking. Your daily activities have an impact on your body and shape your muscles; they either tighten or become weak. The typical consequences associated with bad posture while working on the computer are pain in the back, shoulder, and neck, often resulting in tension headaches.

Remedies

  • Do everything recommended above to combat sitting-related health risks, especially taking frequent breaks and stretching.
  • Self-massage your back and neck.
  • Set up your monitor ergonomically; the top edge should be at eye level, the display should be at arms length from your face and angled slightly backward.
  • Get an ergonomic office chair or maybe an exercise ball to support and strengthen your lower back.
  • Work on a healthy sitting posture; apparently leaning back is actually best for your back.

Repetitive Movements Cause Injuries

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is caused by continual physical movements that damage tendons, nerves, muscles, and other soft body tissues. This is actually a severe form of bad posture that most frequently affects the hands and leads to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Remedies

  • As above, take frequent breaks and stretch.
  • Adjust your posture to reduce strain on your wrists.
  • Consciously keep your hands and arms relaxed.
  • Use very little force when you use the mouse or keyboard.
  • Make sure your hands are warm.

Staring At The Screen Causes Eye Strain

Staring at a bright screen for hours can lead to eye fatigue or eye strain, headaches, blurred vision, burning, itching or tearing eyes, and temporary vision disorders. Fortunately, eye strain rarely results in a permanent condition and symptoms can be prevented or cured rather easily.

Cabbage Soup

Ingredients:

1/2 head chopped cabbage

1 cup yellow or white onion, diced

1 green bell pepper, diced

1 cup celery, chopped

1 cup carrots, sliced

1 large can stewed tomatoes, I use the ones with spices added

cracked black pepper to taste

garlic to taste

other seasonings as desired, I use some basil, red peppers, whatever looks good, this is one of those things that it rarely is exactly the same thing twice

hot water, 1-2 cups

When you start putting vegetables in your stock pot they take up quite a bit of room. A trick I learned from my sister is to chop and add as you go, start with cabbage and pour your hot water over that right away to help it start to cook down. Heat on medium-high heat until boiling, reduce heat, cover and simmer until vegetables are as tender as you like. That’s it. Your whole house will smell amazing. I like to use it as a pre-dinner soup, it has no protein so obviously you can’t eat just this, it will fill you up so you have less room for other stuff!

Obesity is now Classified as a Disease

Obesity rates in the United States remain unacceptably high, and the epidemic persists in affecting Blacks and Hispanics disproportionately.

Obesity is now classified as a disease. This was the final decision at the annual meeting of the American Medical Association (AMA), the organization that represents doctors nationwide.

Despite their own Council on Science and Public Health releasing a report earlier in the meeting which indicated that obesity was not a disease process, the AMA House of Delegates took the bold step to vote in opposition to this report.

Taking away the blame

For persons who struggle with their weight and the physicians that care for them, this designation of obesity as a disease is seen as a victory. Currently, there are very few resources available to those with obesity as this entity has been viewed as self-induced. The current dogma suggests that obesity can be cured with proper diet and nutrition.

Many persons believe that if you are eating the right foods in the proper portion sizes and following a dedicated exercise regimen, you will never become obese. However, science has taught us that while this may be the case for some persons, there is not a “one size fits all” approach to obesity.

Studies have shown that hormones in the body such as leptin and ghrelin play a role in the weight status of an individual. These hormones are just a few of the hormones that regulate energy balance in the human body. Leptin, a hormone that is primarily produced by fat, circulates in the bloodstream and communicates with the brain whether or not the body has had enough to eat.

For persons that have a higher leptin level, they will tend to eat more as their body does not sense that there is enough food or energy on board. The leptin level varies from person to person.

Some studies suggest that blacks are more likely to have a higher leptin level than whites. One such study indicated that leptin levels were much higher in black women, even after controlling for factors such as weight. The authors suggested that further research into leptin is needed to investigate racial differences in obesity-related diseases.

Guacamole Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Guacamole Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Prep time: 10 minutes
Freeze time: 5 minutes
Total time: 15 minutes
Yield: 1 sandwich
Ingredients
  • 2 slices of bread
  • 1/3 cup Best Guacamole Ever!
  • 5 sprigs fresh cilantro
  • 2 slices tomato
  • 1/3 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 tablespoon butter
Cooking directions
  1. I used shredded cheese for this recipe because I melt the cheese in the broiler first so that the tomatoes and cilantro get covered in gooey cheese.
  2. So take your two slices of bread and place them on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Put some cheese on the bread, then add the cilantro and tomato (each on a different slice). Then top with more cheese.
  3. Place the tray in the broiler just long enough for the cheese to melt, about 30 seconds or so. The key here is to melt the cheese but don’t wilt the cilantro.
  4. Remove the tray from the boiler and smear on some guac.
  5. Add 1/2 tablespoon of butter to an iron skillet and melt it over a medium-high heat. Then place the assembled sandwich in the skillet and brown on both sides, melting the cheese further.
  6. Enjoy!

10 Anti-Asthma Foods

#1: Avocado

This buttery and exquisite fruit is one of the prime source of glutathione, which has been shown to protect cells against free radical damage and to detoxify foreign substances such as pollutants.

Avocados are also a good source of vitamin E, particularly helpful for people whose asthma is linked to a nut allergy (nuts are one of the most common sources of vitamin E)

#2: Broccoli Sprouts

These miniature cabbages share many of the benefits of their larger cousins, they are a true nutritional treasure and a great addition to your diet if you suffer from asthma. Broccoli sprouts can increase the antioxidant compounds that control the airway inflammation associated with bronchial asthma.

#3: Apples

This crunchy, juicy, fiber-rich snack also possesses some extraordinary properties that may provide protection against asthma. They are also high in concentration of bioflavonoids, such as quercetin. Quercetin is known to possess strong anti-histamine, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties reducing the chance of suffering from wheezing by 50%.

#4: Rosemary

The antioxidant power of rosmarinic acid is believed to be even stronger than that of vitamin E. In addition, rosmarinic acid encourages cells to create prostacyclins, which help keep the air passages of the lungs open and thus promote easy breathing.

#5: Ginger

Ginger’s asthma fighting properties are thought to be attributed to gingerols, strong anti-inflammatory substances that give ginger its distinctive flavor.

#6: Sunflower Seeds

Sunflower seeds are brimming with anti-asthma nutrients, as these mild nutty tasting seeds are loaded with vitamin E, potassium, and magnesium.

#7: Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are one of the foods that are least likely to cause allergic reactions, which is great news since asthma is often linked to allergies. They also contain plenty of vitamin C and potassium as well as unique root proteins which, according to preliminary studies, may have significant antioxidant properties.

#8: Turmeric

Turmeric possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties.

#9: Kale

Kale is a great source of vitamin C, it is also one of the most concentrated dietary sources of beta-carotene, which can help with allergens.

#10: Mustard Greens

One of the best sources of beta-carotene, chock-full of antioxidants and nutrients, mustard greens can make an excellent addition to your diet if you are susceptible to asthma attacks.

They also provide a good amount of vitamins C and E, which can remove free radicals that cause smooth muscle contraction and airway constriction in people with asthma.

6 Foods that Increase Hunger

1. Chewing gum
This bad habit stimulates the gastric juices, therefore saliva is produced and moves to the stomach fooling it into thinking there is food to be digested, making you hungrier.

2. Diet soda
This is not only highly harmful to your health, it can also make you hungrier, that to its high amount artificial sweeteners that could have the effect of triggering appetite but unlike regular sugars they don’t deliver something that will squelch the appetite.

3. High fructose corn syrup
Moderation is seemingly impossible with this evil ingredient, it interferes with the body’s metabolism so that a person can’t stop eating. It slows down the secretion of leptin in the body, which is a crucial hormone that tells you that you’re full and to stop eating.

4. Frozen dinners
These dinners don’t have enough calories or nutrients to fill you up, and there is not enough roughage to expand in your stomach.

5. Pastries and baked goods
White sugar and flour have no fiber or nutrients and they are normally packed with white sugar as well, this will send you through the roof and then you come crashing down much hungrier than you were before.

6. Sugary breakfast bars
This is practically the same as pastry, they are high processed and full of sugar, exchange them for real oatmeal, fruits and honey, or eggs and vegetables for a much better way to start your day.

Avoid These 7 Foods and You’re Off To A Healthier New You

In order to stay as youthful and as fit as possible, there are certain foods that should be largely avoided. Not only will the avoidance of these foods improve your health, it will also mean that you detoxify your entire system in the process, which is always beneficial.

The foods to avoid when detoxing are also those that are widely recognized as best limited or avoided in your diet in order to maintain good health.

Caffeinated drinks

Caffeine is a diuretic and leads to dehydration. As a stimulant, it puts your body under stress and deprives it of essential nutrients. It also prevents your body from absorbing vitamins and minerals.

Alcohol

You should definitely give up alcohol while detoxifying. As well as containing sugar, alcohol is broken into a toxin in your body, and the production of harmful free radicals is increased when it is being metabolized. Alcohol damages the liver, muscles and brain, and depletes your body of essential vitamins and minerals.

Wheat

Wheat bran can irritate the colon. Wheat protein, also known as gluten, is difficult to digest, and may cause bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. Many people are intolerant of wheat but find they can consume other grains without problems. However, if you have celiac disease, you will need to avoid all sources of gluten permanently

Convenience foods, fatty –fried foods and sugary foods

These include store-bought meals, cookies, cakes and spreads. Soft drinks also contain a high amount ofsugar. Diet versions are not suitable alternatives because of the amount of additives they contain.
Choose fresh or dried fruits and whole-food products instead, also drink water or natural fruit juices.

Meat

Meat creates extra work for your digestive system and in the case of red meat contains a lot of harmful saturated fat. Eat small quantities of good-quality, organic protein instead to give your body the amino acids it needs. Eggs, nuts, oily fish, and whole soy products are good choices.

Salt and sugar

Your body needs a great deal of fluid to metabolize foods that are high in refined sugar, so if you eat a lot of these foods, your body will retain a lot of water as well. Sugar disrupts blood glucose levels. Salt prevents fluids from being removed from the body.

Cow’s milk products

Milk increases the production of mucus in the body, so it is not beneficial when detoxing. In addition, many people lack sufficient quantities of the enzyme lactose, which is needed to digest lactose and, therefore, cannot properly digest dairy products.
