GOP Senator to GOP Pals – “Man Up” and Vote on Obama’s Nominee

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) took a swing at his party Friday, saying Republicans need to “man up” and give Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland a vote, The Hill reports.

“Just man up and cast a vote. The tough thing about these senatorial jobs is you get yes or no votes. Your whole job is to either say yes or no and explain why,” he told “The Big John Howell Show” on WLS-AM in Chicago.

The Illinois Republican, who faces a tough reelection bid, was quick to break with the party’s strategy to block President Obama’s Supreme Court pick from getting a hearing, a vote or, in most cases, a meeting.

He told The Hill last month he would accept a meeting with the president’s nominee and added this week that “I will assess Judge Merrick Garland based on his record and qualifications.”

President Obama’s Supreme Court Nominee is…

The Constitution of the United States command the president of the United States to appoint nominees for the Supreme Court of the United States. Mr. Obama is fulfilling his Constitutional duties.

President Obama will announce federal appeal court Judge Merrick Garland on Wednesday as his nominee for the Supreme Court, according to reports.

Garland, 63, was selected by the President to fill the seat left vacant by Justice Antonin Scalia’s sudden death last month, both The Associated Press and The New York Times reported.

Garland is the chief judge of the Washington, D.C., court of appeals. He was among those considered for the seat taken by Justice Elena Kagan in 2010.

Obama’s choice will pit the President in a bitter battle with Senate Republicans, whose leaders vowed to turn their back on his candidate — no matter who was chosen.

Obama has simply responded that he was fulfilling his Constitutional duties as President, rather than letting a seat on the nine-member court go vacant for 11 months.

Cast of “Hamilton” Visits White House – Raps With Obama – Video

Well, the President didn’t actually rap, although he started things off by telling the drummer to “drop the beat.” The president then holds up cue cards with certain words and “Hamilton” star and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda dropped the freestyle.

Carson Doubles Down – Barack Obama “was, you know, raised white”

Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson was awarded a little spotlight from the media today when he said that President Obama was not raised like a typical African-American, but was “raised white.” Carson then went on CNN and doubled down on that original statement.

“I grew up in Detroit, and I grew up in Boston. In Boston, we lived in the ghetto. There were a lot of violent episodes there. There were rats, there were roaches. It was dire poverty,” Carson said, speaking of his mother who worked around-the-clock but refused to accept welfare. “Now, let me contrast that to the President, who went to private schools, grew up in a relatively affluent environment, had an opportunity to live in multiple cultures and different countries. I think that’s a very different experience.”

Carson maintained that he was not “criticizing” Obama. But he had gone further in an interview with Politico’s Glenn Thrush on his “Off Message” podcast that aired Tuesday.

“He’s an ‘African’ American. He was, you know, raised white,” the retired neurosurgeon said. “So, for him to, you know, claim that, you know, he identifies with the experience of black Americans, I think, is a bit of a stretch.”

Rafael Cruz Warns – Obama will Destroy America in 30 Years with Supreme Court Nomination

Exactly. Just as the President has gone door to door to suppress our Second Amendment Rights and confiscate our guns, and the way he has used Obamacare to destroy America’s economic system, and the way Mr. Obama has created death panels to decide who gets healthcare and who dies in the waiting room. Remember all those Republican claims about Obama? Well now the president is apparently going to use his Supreme Court nominee to destroy America… in as little as 30 years!

That was the warning from Rafael Cruz, father of the presidential candidate known for telling lies, the candidate who is often called out by Donald Trump and Marco Rubio as the biggest liar in politics – Ted Cruz. Rafael was interviewed by Pat Robertson and felt the need to issue the warning about Obama to the American people.

Speaking about the death of Justice Scalia and the coming nomination by President Obama, Rafael said, “This could tilt the balance of the court and could be something that would affect America for the next 30 years. We don’t have 30 years.”

President Obama Speaks At a U.S Mosque – Video

President Obama did what no other American president has ever done – visited a Mosque right here in the United States. Why you asked? To combat the hate some Republicans and the Republican presidential candidates are throwing against the entire Muslim community or, to quote the President, to combat the “inexcusable political rhetoric against Muslim-Americans.”

“Let me say as clearly as I can as president of the United States: you fit right here,” Obama told the audience at the Islamic Society of Baltimore, a 47-year-old mosque with thousands of attendees. “You’re right where you belong. You’re part of America too. You’re not Muslim or American. You’re Muslim and American.”

Joe Biden to Dems – Run on Obama’s Accomplishments

If scared Democrats had done what Biden is recommending now, then things would have turned out much different in the last midterm elections. Remember how that went? Democratic candidates had so many different policies and accomplishments to point to, but instead they ran as far to the right as possible, only to have Democratic voters stay home on election day. And you know how that turned out – when Democrats don’t vote, Republicans win!

The Vice President is cautioning against that mistake for the 2016 elections.

“The best way to win is to run on what we’ve done and what we stand for … and then contrast that to what they are for and what they oppose. We don’t do it nearly enough,” he said.

“I am bullish on the possibilities for the House, as well as the Senate, and I really think the key is: Don’t run away from what you’ve done.”

Biden, who decided against his own run for the White House after a drawn-out process last year, highlighted several Democratic priorities he feels will prove popular on the campaign trail, including expanded worker protections, universal access to pre-kindergarten programs and an increase in the child care tax credit.

He said the Republicans’ legislative wishlist — as defined by the past budgets of Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) — has given the Democrats plenty of fodder to distinguish the parties’ priorities.

“Paul Ryan’s a lovely guy. He gave us such a gift, he passed the Ryan budget. … You guys don’t have to make anything up. Just say exactly what they’ve done,” Biden said.

“We can make these cases in each of our districts and suit them to our districts. … Because right now in a lot of places Americans are so confused there’s still basically this ‘pox on both your houses’ [sentiment]. We shouldn’t apologize for what we’re for, and we should point out what they’re for.”

President Obama Explains Why He Wouldn’t Want a Third Term Even if He Could

Seems the Founding Fathers knew what they were doing when the put a limit on the amount of time a president can preside. According to the current occupant of the White House, after 8 years in the Oval Office, it’s usually time for some “fresh legs.”

In an interview with CBS, the President explained that even if it was allowed to run for a third term, he wouldn’t. Because,“Number one, Michelle wouldn’t let me.”

The President continued.

“This is a process in which the office should be continually renewed by new energy and new ideas and new insights,” Obama said. “And although I think I am as good of a president as I have ever been right now, I also think that there comes a point where you don’t have fresh legs.”

Obama also said there “absolutely” are days when he wonders why he ever ran for the presidency, saying there are times when he gets “tired” and “frustrated.”

“And yet, there has not been a day that I have not walked into the Oval Office and understood that at no point in my life will I ever have the chance to do as much good and make as much of a difference in the lives of people as I do right now,” Obama said.

Trump Supporter Proudly Displays his Racism Along with His Trump Sign

On the same day when blacks and whites came together to celebrate the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, and on the same day when President Obama paid a visit to Omaha Nebraska, a Trump supporter decided to display his racism on full view for all to see.

In the window of his home, the Trump supporter, a man named Steve Bowman, put up a sign saying “NIGGA OBAMA” next to his “TRUMP” poster. When asked about his racist views for the first African-American president, Bowman answered that he “was born in the 60’s,” and is apparently doing all he can to keep his 60’s racist mentality alive and well in 2016.

His neighbor, an Africa American woman with two small children said that she is used to seeing this level of racism and hatred from her neighbor. She said that she will not allow  Bowman’s hate to get the best of her.

“He’s been putting up stuff like that constantly. Constantly putting up stuff like that and I’ll bring it up to him gently, you know, ‘take that down please you know this is not the neighborhood for that. He understands and he will take it down after I mention it to him, but then he’ll put something else up.”

President Obama’s Message in Flint Michigan – Video

“I am very proud of what I’ve done as president,” President Obama said Wednesday in Flint Michigan. “But the only job that’s more important to me is the job of father. And I know if I was a parent up there, I would be beside myself if my kids’ health could be at risk.”

The president went on to explain that he “declared a federal emergency in Flint” which would ensure that more resources are sent to help fight the Republican-made water crisis.

“It is a reminder of why you can’t shortchange basic services that we provide to our people,” Mr. Obama said, a direct reference to the governor’s decision to get contaminated water from Flint’s river for the people’s use. “And that we together provide as a government to make sure that public health and safety is preserved,” Obama said.

The Urgency of King’s Message: Forty Eight Years and Counting

I think I’ve found a new, potent source of energy; Martin Luther King, Jr. spinning in his grave over the state of race relations in the country and on the presidential election trail. All we need to do is tap into it and we can power our devices for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, it won’t do much for our national soul.

In the 48 years since his untimely and tragic death, King’s legacy has been begged, borrowed and stolen by those who believe they knew his intentions and by those who wanted them buried along with him. From the start, politicians – mostly on the right, including President Reagan and Senator Jesse Helms – opposed even making King’s birthday a national holiday. Arizona had to be threatened with the ultimate penalty of no Super Bowls, before they would accept the day. It’s also become a favorite day for the NBA to schedule afternoon games, but that seems to be the upper limit on MLK Day commercialization, and that’s a good thing. Those of us who are old enough might remember that January was traditionally the month when retailers would run sales on textiles that they labeled “White Sales.”

Can you imagine?

Over the past few years we’ve witnessed terrible incidents where African-American men, women and children were unjustly killed by the police, unnecessarily fined to the brink of bankruptcy by corrupt public officials, and stopped by the police for reasons that white Americans don’t experience. And what is considered good news for African-Americans, that their rates of narcotics deaths is lower, is tragically caused by racism, as this article recounts:

There is a reason that blacks appear to have been spared the worst of the narcotic epidemic, said Dr. Andrew Kolodny, a drug abuse expert. Studies have found that doctors are much more reluctant to prescribe painkillers to minority patients, worrying that they might sell them or become addicted.
“The answer is that racial stereotypes are protecting these patients from the addiction epidemic,” said Dr. Kolodny, a senior scientist at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University and chief medical officer for Phoenix House Foundation, a national drug and alcohol treatment company.

On the campaign trail, the Republicans continue to express their outrage that minorities are not working because white tax money is easily available to them in the form of public assistance and unemployment benefits. Their fealty to Donald Trump’s immigration scheme will doom them with a majority of Hispanic voters and they can’t win the White House with only White Votes. Their opposition to a fair minimum wage, infrastructure projects, labor collective bargaining rights and public schools really doesn’t allow for any middle class group to support them, much less those who have traditionally been marginalized in American society.

On the Democratic side, Bernie Sanders is making his move in Iowa and New Hampshire and is now trying to appeal more to African-Americans, a group that Hillary Clinton has always done well with. Both of them have had problems with Black Lives Matter and their relative success could come down to the minority vote in southern states and northern cities. The Democrats cannot take the African-American vote for granted because the party has controlled many cities over the years, yet the schools have not improved, housing has not become more affordable, the minimum wage hasn’t helped and many jobs have fled the country.

Barack Obama’s election will have a lasting effect on this country, even as he is the victim of both overt and subtle racism on the part of many of his opponents. That he has served this country with distinction, morality, forthrightness and a stubborn streak that has forced his opposition to argue against fair treatment of all people, makes him a worthy representative of King’s legacy.

And this is why we need to have a holiday for Martin Luther King. It’s here to remind us that we will never live up to the true meaning of our founding documents as long as we treat people differently under the law, in the workplace and schools, and, most importantly, in our heads and hearts. I would urge you to add to your resolutions to lose weight and make more money, one that includes an action, an attitude change, or a commitment to act in King’s spirit and honor his words.
