House Republicans Pretending The Senate Approved Paul Ryan’s Budget

House Republicans have all agreed and passed the Paul Ryan Budget – a budget that takes $5.3 Trillion from services that helps the poor and transfer $4.3 Trillion to the rich in the form of subsidies and tax cuts.

Knowing that the Democratically controlled Senate will never approve such a dumb and draconian budget, House Republicans are now pretending that the Senate did just that. Included in a House Resolution (H.RES.614) this week was this little provision:

Pending the adoption of a concurrent resolution on the budget for fiscal year 2013, the provisions of House Concurrent Resolution 112, as adopted by the House, shall have force and effect in the House as though Congress has adopted such concurrent resolution

In other words, we know the Senate didn’t approve and would never approve this Paul Ryan Republican budget (House Concurrent Resolution 112), but this provision allows us pretend and act as if they did. Yay for Paul Ryan!

Just another day in the life of a Do-Nothing Republican House of Representatives.

Fighting For Students – President Calls On Congress to Work FOR Students, Not Against Them

President Barack Obama urged Congress to limit student-loan rate increases, calling higher education an “economic imperative.”

Going to college is “an economic imperative that every family must be able to afford,” the President said Saturday in his weekly address.

Student-loan rates are set to be the next big issue split along party lines, and Obama hopes that his message of reasonable rates will resonate will younger voters as well as boost fellow Democrats.

“Republicans in Congress have voted against new ways to make college more affordable for middle-class families and voted for huge new tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires — tax cuts that would have to be paid for by cutting things like education and job-training programs that give students new opportunities to work and succeed,” Obama added.

Mitt Romney Posed With Anti-Obama Osama Clinton Sign

Buzzfeed reports that at a 2008 rally in South Carolina Romney posed and held up this sign linking the two likely Democratic nominees, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, to 9/11 mastermind Osama Bin Laden.

Romney responded that his critics needed to “lighten up slightly. There are a lot of jokes out there. I’m not responsible for all the signs I see.”

No Romney, don’t be silly! No one’s accusing you of being responsible for all the signs you see, but we are holding you responsible for the ones you choose to associate yourself with.

Mitt Romney and his Polygamist Connection

Ben Jacobs from The Daily Beast wrote about a conversation he had with Montana Democratic Gov. Brian Schweitzer. Mr. Jacobs noted that when he acknowledged the irony of Mitt Romney’s father being born in Mexico, and Romney having problems with the Hispanic community, Mr. Schweitzer replied;

… that it is “kinda ironic given that his family came from a polygamy commune in Mexico, but then he’d have to talk about his family coming from a polygamy commune in Mexico, given the gender discrepancy.” Women, he said, are “not great fans of polygamy, 86 percent were not great fans of polygamy. I am not alleging by any stretch that Romney is a polygamist and approves of [the] polygamy lifestyle, but his father was born into [a] polygamy commune in Mexico.”

The Obama campaign spokesperson Lis Smith told the Daily Beast that “Attacking a candidate’s religion is out of bounds, and our campaign will not engage in it, and we don’t think others should either.”

Republican Deadbeat Joe Walsh Settles his $117,000 Child Support Bill

Joe Walsh – who attacked president Obama over “fiscal responsibility” only to be shamed after reports surfaced that he owed over $117,000 in back child support – has come to terms with his ex-wife over what he’s calling a “misunderstanding.”

Neither side would disclose the terms of the settlement, but Walsh’s office released a joint statement from him and his ex-wife Thursday morning saying the two sides had resolved the dispute and that Walsh (R-McHenry) is not a “deadbeat dad.”

“We both regret this public misunderstanding and the effect it has had on our children,” the statement says. “Like many families, we have had our share of issues and made our share of mistakes over the years. Having resolved these issues together and cleared up these mistakes in private, we now agree that Joe is not and was not a ‘deadbeat dad’ and does not owe child

The statement continued: “We both have been loving and devoted parents to our children, ages 24, 21, and 17, and are happy to avoid a public legal fight hurtful to our entire family and look forward to caring for our children in private.”

Florida Will Consider Changing ‘Stand Your Ground’ Law

A 17-member task force will consider whether Florida’s controversial “stand your ground law” needs to be changed.

The state released details Thursday about the panel, which will consider Florida “laws, rules, regulations or programs that relate to public safety and citizen protection,” including the law that has fallen under a national microscope since the killing of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin.

“We’re not walking into this with any preconceived notions,” Gov. Rick Scott said at a news conference. If there are “logical changes to be made,” he said, the task force “will provide those.”

The “highly qualified” group will make recommendations to the governor and the legislature, said Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll, who is chairing the panel.

Florida Judge Disqualifies Herself From Trayvon Martin Case

The Florida judge assigned to the murder case stemming from the shooting of Trayvon Martin disqualified herself at the request of George Zimmerman, the defendant.

Florida Circuit Judge Jessica Recksiedler, of the 18th Judicial Circuit in Seminole County, issued the disqualification order today, according to an e-mailed statement from the court. Judge Kenneth R. Lester Jr. will handle the Zimmerman case, according to the statement.

Recksiedler last week said she had a potential conflict of interest because her attorney-husband works with a TV legal analyst whom Zimmerman had sought out for legal representation in the case.

Biden Tries to Save The Violence Against Women Act from GOP Block Party

Vice-President Joe Biden will Wednesday lead a Democrat push to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, the 1994 legislation that now faces opposition from some conservatives.

Biden will be joined by Attorney General Eric Holder, Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett, White House Advisor on Violence Against Women Lynn Rosenthal and Sharon Love, mother of Yeardley Love and founder of the One Love Foundation, to talk about the need to reauthorize the law.

The New York Times has reported that the law would expand financing for and broaden the reach of domestic violence programs.

However, it said some Republicans say the measure unnecessarily expands immigration avenues by creating new definitions for immigrant victims to claim battery, and also dilutes the focus on domestic violence by expanding protections to new groups, like same-sex couples.

Yet Another In Your Face Lie from Mitt Romney

Mitt Romney told CNBC that there’s precedent for presidential candidates releasing just two years of tax returns.

Said Romney: “Well, we’ve had people run for president before, and they’ve released two years. John Kerry released two years of taxes… I’ve released one already, put the estimate out for the next year. We’ll have two years of taxes.”

But Think Progress points out Kerry actually released 20 years of tax returns when he was a candidate in 2004.

Ted Nugent Threatens President Obama – Mitt Romney Enjoyed “Getting to Know Ted Nugent”

At a recent National Rifle Association (NRA) gathering, aging Rocker Ted Nugent said this about President Obama, “if Barack Obama becomes the president in November again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year.” His statement implies that if President Obama wins re-election in November, he [Ted] will either get killed in an assassination attempt, or end up in jail as a result of such an attempt.

Mr. Nugent is now on the Secret Service’s radar as they look deeper into the meaning of what he said.

Meanwhile, Mitt Romney, in a recent interview, expressed his pleasure in ‘getting to know Ted Nugent.”

Romney just took his level of sickness down to new lows!

Obama’s Attempt To Bring Down Gas Prices Dead On Arrival thanks to Republican Obstructionism

Some will call it pure politics. Others will call it absolutely necessary in an economy where gas prices are skyrocketing. But no matter how you look at it, this new move by the Obama administration to try and bring down gas prices will be another opportunity for Republicans to bitch and moan that too much Wall Street regulations are coming out of the Obama White House.

In trying to influence the price Americans are paying at the pump, the President will call on Congress to:

– Boost spending on technology to improve better oversight and surveillance of energy markets.

– Increase by six times the money spent on surveillance and enforcement staff of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to better deter oil market manipulation.

– Increase from $1 million to $10 million civil and criminal penalties against firms that engage in market manipulation.

– In an effort designed to limit energy market disruptions, give the Commodity Futures Trading Commission authority to increase the amount of money that a trader must put up to back a trading position.

If Congress agree to these measures, gas prices may come down a notch. But don’t expect anything to get done in an election year when Republicans are looking for anything to blame on this President. And given that the President’s proposal has more regulations for Wall Street speculators, expect Republicans to use extra words and terms like socialization and class warfare to describe the president’s attempt to bring down gas prices.
