President Obama will back a United Nations effort to secure Syria’s chemical weapons stockpiles, the White House said Tuesday.
Separately, a group of senators said they were working on a new use-of-force resolution that would only authorize military action if Syria refuses to relinquish its stockpile of chemical weapons to international control.
This development took place a day after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) canceled a procedural vote scheduled for Wednesday on authorizing a limited military strike on Syria.
The outline under discussion by the nine lawmakers would require the United Nations to pass a resolution stating that Syrian President Bashar Assad gassed his own people. It would also call on the U.N. to remove all of Syria’s chemical weapons by a certain date.
The resolution would authorize U.S. military action if those goals are not met, according to a source familiar with the negotiations.
Rep. Alan Grayson went on MSNBC’s Weekends with Alex Witt on Sunday and had a rather tart interview with host Alex Witt. Alex, like the other hosts at MSNBC has taken a rather right-winged, warmongering stance on President Obama’s decision to bring Congress into the Syria decision-making process.
Beginning yesterday with Andrea Mitchell’s apparent surprise that the President would ask for Congressional approval before dropping bombs on Syria, Alex Witt continued today, questioning why Alan Grayson was so much against military intervention in the Syrian conflict.
Grayson began the interview by stating his reasons for being against America dropping bombs.
- It’s not our responsibility,
- Whatever we do will not accomplish anything useful
- It’s expensive
- It’s dangerous
Alex Witt was quick to point out that Grayson’s position was not a popular and wondered how much pushback he was getting from other members of the house or from his constituents. Grayson answered that his position was in fact, the popular position, stating that “the polls now show and would continue to show that Americans understand that it’s simply not our responsibility.” Grayson continued;
“We are only one country our of 196. We have our own problems to deal with and we’re not the world’s policeman nor the world’s judge, jury and executioner.”
Later on in the interview, Alex played a part of the President’s speech where he outlined the reason why America must attack Syria. In the video, President Obama asked what message do we send if a dictator is able to gas children and get away with it. Alex Witt asked Grayson to respond to the President’s question. Grayson explained that the rules already in effect requires the perpetrator be brought to “the International Court of The Hague” to answer the charges, “not be bombed!”
Watch the exchange below.
Personally, I agree with the British parliament on this one. No to a war or any military engagement in Syria. It is time we stop trying to be the world’s police and look after our own affairs here at home for a change.
We need the investments here. Buildings are deteriorating, bridges are falling down and major cities are filing for bankruptcy. The American worker is physically and mentally spent, because they are forced to accept jobs that cannot and will not pay the bills, while being asked by greedy employers to do more.
This is not the time to be Randy Macho-man Savage. It is not the time to measure the size of your kahunas because you made a statement about a red line. A red line does not a war make.
Sure, I agree that the decision to gas innocent Syria civilians amount to the most serious of crimes, but that action requires the international community to be on the same page and united in their response. And if the international community thinks it’s best that Syria handle their own affairs, then so be it.
You ran on ending wars and rebuilding the American economy. And for the most part, you’ve been doing that. Let’s not get sidetracked by how the Republicans would spin the story if you decided to do what you ran on. No matter what your decision is, they will find a way to denounce you for it.
Will they call you a weak leader if you decide to invest here at home? Sure they will. Will they call you a weak leader if you decide to fire missiles into Syria from the safety of ships anchored in the ocean? Yes, they will still.
And who cares what other world leaders would think? It was under your leadership that we got Osama bin Laden. And it is under your leadership that we are getting some of the most dangerous terrorists the world has ever known. No world leader would truly say America lacks leadership if you decide against military intervention. On the contrary, it will take real leadership to decide against dropping the bombs.
The military industrial complex would be furious if you don’t follow through with the red line ultimatum. There is a whole lot of money to be made and the stock market is already investing heavily in these weapon manufacturers, in the hope that you will drop the bombs. But consider this: the price of each bomb dropped could be a dilapidated school renovated, a run down bridge renovated, roads built, cities rejuvenated. It could mean sticking to what you ran on and ending wars instead of creating them.
Think about it, a President of the United States actually investing in the United States?
What a concept!
Sincerely
Ezra Grant.
We are a civilized society. wink wink.
Marsters, a retired Massachusetts police officer…posted a photo of Obama along with a link to a story about a Republican push to impeach the president at 8:17 p.m. Friday, writing “Shoot the Nigger” above it, according to the newspaper.
Marsters told the [Portland] Press Herald that after his Facebook post was flagged to local law enforcement by other residents, he was visited by both the Secret Service and the CIA. He said he told the Secret Service agents who questioned him that he didn’t intend to threaten the president.
Marsters told the Press Herald in a telephone interview that his post was taken out of context.
“I think it’s a lot of hogwash,” he said. “I did not threaten the president. … I might have used the wrong words. … I didn’t say I was going to do it.”
“What I really meant to say is, ‘When are we going to get rid of this (expletive),’” Marsters added. “I should have said, ‘I hope the bastard dies.’”
Birthers, as you may know, are those Republicans who believe that President Obama is not really the President of the United States, because they insist without any facts whatsoever, Mr. Obama was born in Kenya. So how do these lost, sad souls qualify Canadian born Ted Cruz to be president, while at the same time disqualifying American born Barack Obama?
Well they claim Ted Cruz’s mother was an American, so that immediately makes Ted an American, no questions asked. But what about Barack’s mother? Wasn’t she an American too, born in Kansas? Of course she was. So the “American mother” argument doesn’t fly. There must be other qualifiers, and thanks to the Texas Tribune, we know the other qualifiers are.
According to these Birthers, Cruz “has the Hollywood look” to be President. Another Birther suggests that Republicans will vote for Cruz simply because he is a Republican and that’s what they do. It’s a party thing she said. But it was the qualifier of the third Birther that took the ignorance to a whole new level. She advises us that Canada is not considered “foreign soil,” at least not in her view!
See the craziness yourself.
During Hurricane Sandy, President Obama and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie joined forces and did what was right for the victims of the hurricane. They did what they were both elected to do, they did what the people wanted. And it was this coming together of the Democratic President and the Republican Governor that caused Christie to see his poll numbers rise among New Jersey Democrats and paved the way for his likely re-election in the upcoming governor’s election, and possible a 2016 run for President.
For his part, the President also benefited from the newly found political relationship as his poll numbers rose right before the November 2012 election, allowing him to defeat Mitt Romney and gave him the opportunity to serve out his second term.
Many in the Republican party blamed Christie for the President’s 2012 win.
But the new found political allies have now gone back to their respective corners as Christie came out on Tuesday and endorsed right winged nut Steve Lonegan to represent New Jersey in the United States Senate. Mr. Lonegan has made questionable comments about President Obama, ObamaCare and immigration, Planned Parenthood among others. He was also the New Jersey state director for Americans for Prosperity, the Koch brothers-aligned group. In his endorsement on Tuesday, Christie said Lonegan was just what New Jersey needed in the Senate.
Obama on the other hand endorsed New Jersey Democrat Cory Booker. In his endorsement, the President said “Cory Booker has dedicated his life to the work of building hope and opportunity in communities where too little of either existed. Whether as a college student working in East Palo Alto or as mayor of New Jersey’s largest city, Cory has time and again taken on tough challenges, fought for the middle class and those working to join it, and forged coalitions that create progress – and that’s the spirit he’ll carry with him to Washington.”
Looking at these two endorsement, it is clear to see that Christie’s endorsement was purely political. The Governor it seems, is trying to win back the hearts and minds of those Republicans in New Jersey and nationwide, who still blames him for Obama’s win. The Latino American Democratic Association of Bergen County has also picked up on Christie’s blatant political move. The group’s president Jorge Nunez, said in a statement, ““We need to call this endorsement for what it is, an endorsement of radical-right-wing extremism and anti-Latino sentiment.”
And Christie’s Democratic challenger for Governor Barbara Buono said through a spokesman, “Just like tea party extremist Steve Lonegan, Governor Christie is anti-choice, anti-Planned Parenthood, anti-marriage equality, and anti-commonsense legislation to reduce gun violence. Their unabashedly conservative views are completely out-of-touch with most New Jerseyans.”
Obama’s endorsement was expected all along. Cory Booker has been a staunch advocate for the President and his policies, so Obama’s endorsement was an easy or obvious conclusion.
So who will win? Will New Jersey see through Christie’s political moves and reward his challenger Barbara Buono? Or will New Jerseyans be blinded by Christie’s love the president today, endorse his adversary tomorrow strategy?
We will all find out on November 5th, 2013!
President Obama used his Weekly Address to address the eventual full implementation of ObamaCare or the Affordable Care Act – a law that will allow millions of Americans to be finally able to afford healthcare. And again, he pointed out the fact that there are still Republicans hell bent on making sure these Americans don’t get healthcare.
Many Members of Congress, in both parties, are working hard to inform their constituents about these benefits, protections, and affordable plans. But there’s also a group of Republicans in Congress working hard to confuse people, and making empty promises that they’ll either shut down the health care law, or, if they don’t get their way, they’ll shut down the government.
Think about that. They’re actually having a debate between hurting Americans who will no longer be denied affordable care just because they’ve been sick – and harming the economy and millions of Americans in the process. And many Republicans are more concerned with how badly this debate will hurt them politically than they are with how badly it’ll hurt the country.
A lot of Republicans seem to believe that if they can gum up the works and make this law fail, they’ll somehow be sticking it to me. But they’d just be sticking it to you.
It’s raining on Martha’s Vineyard, but President Obama apparently felt the need to get out of the house tuesday.
Obama went for a lunch run at one of the island’s landmarks — Nancy’s snack bar on the waterfront in Oak Bluffs.
Dressed for vacation — blue fleece, Nike sneakers, a Chicago White Sox cap — Obama shook hands and greeted about 40 other patrons before picking up his order at the counter.
The selections, as identified by the White House: fried shrimp, fried oysters, onion rings and french fries.
Obama told the staff at the counter: “Good to see you man, thanks for feeding us.”
The presidential motorcade then headed to the house where senior adviser Valerie Jarrett is staying this week.
After lunch, the president went to a nearby school to play some basketball.
If this had been President Bush, conservatives would never stop talking about it.
A photo showing a rodeo clown dressed as President Barack Obama at the Missouri State Fair caused a stir on social media Sunday.
The photo was first posted on the liberal blog Show Me Progress. The blog post tells the tale of a Missouri resident, Perry Beam, who attended the fair in Sedalia with his wife Lily and a Taiwanese student Saturday night.
“Just prior to the start of the bull riding event, one of the clowns came out dressed in this,” the posts says, referring to the photo. “The announcer wanted to know if anyone would like to see Obama run down by a bull. The crowd went wild. He asked it again and again, louder each time, whipping the audience into a lather. One of the clowns ran up and started bobbling the lips on the mask and the people went crazy.”
According to the post, a bull then charged the clown, forcing him to run away “to the delight of the onlookers hooting and hollering from the stands.
