Christian Republicans Believe In Caring For The Sick, But They’re Against ObamaCare?

“It is the view that Christians should vote their values, and this means we should legislate moral evils into oblivion. Thus if we believe life begins at conception, we should vote against abortion! If we believe marriage is between one woman and one man, we should vote against gay marriage! And if we believe in caring for the sick and the poor, we should vote against “Obamacare!” … Wait a minute!”

That is a quote from David J. Dunn, an Orthodox lay theologian who is questioning the apparent hypocrisy being demonstrated by the Christian Republicans in this country. Mr. Dunn wrote a piece in The Huffington Post highlighting three moral issues Christian Republicans base their votes on – Abortions, Gay Marriage and Health care.

“Do you see the political hypocrisy?” Mr. Dunn asks. “The Christian Right votes for candidates who are anti-abortion and anti-gay (at least on paper) because it believes we must pass laws to protect marriage and protect life (at least embryonic life), but it is unwilling to apply the same principle to “Obamacare.” Infants in the womb have a right to life, but apparently adults do not have a right to life-saving medical care.”

He continues;

Opponents of the individual mandate argue that the state cannot force citizens to buy health insurance. That is a violation of our individual rights. But conservative Christians are willing to consider subjecting women to transvaginal ultrasounds before undergoing an abortion. Taxing people without insurance is intrusive, but apparently shoving something up one’s body is not.

Mr. Dunn brought his piece to a rather eye-opening conclusion: “In the Bible, Cain grew jealous of his brother Abel and killed him. This was the first murder. When God asked Cain where Abel was, he feigned ignorance and replied, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” (Gen. 4:9). Christians who oppose the Affordable Care Act are not murdering Abel, but they are willing to let him die, lest the taxes of others be raised! Apparently Abel must suffer to death so that our individual rights are preserved.”

Weekly Presidential Address: President Thanks Colorado Firefighters

President Obama toured the devastation in Colorado and delivered his weekly address from the fire-plagued Colorado Springs. Mr. Obama thanked the firefighters for their hard work in trying to bring the fires under control.

Firefighters are working 18 hours a day, around the clock, trying to make sure that they get this blaze under control.  We’ve got volunteers who are out here who are making sure that these firefighters have the food and the water and all the resources that they need.  And we’ve been engaging in some unprecedented coordination between federal, state, and local communities to try to bring this fire under control.

And one of the things I’ve done here, in addition to saying thank you to these firefighters, is to let them know that all of America has their back.  One of the things that happens, whether it’s a fire here in Colorado, or a tornado in Alabama or Missouri, or a flood or a hurricane in Florida, one of the things that happens here in America is when we see our fellow citizens in trouble and having difficulty, we come together as one American family, as one community.  And you see that spirit and you see that strength here in Colorado Springs, where people are working together, promising each other to rebuild.  We’ve got to make sure that we are there with them every step of the way, even after this fire is put out.

Teaparty Republican Wishes Colon Cancer on Five Supreme Court Judges

Former Town Councilor Mike Malzone, the founder of the Merrimack Tea Party, said Thursday in a Facebook post reacting to the Supreme Court ruling on health care, “I hope the (5 supremes) get colon cancer.”

A day after posting the message, Malzone said he stands by what he said. He clarified that he doesn’t want anyone to die, and the cancer reference was more to make a point that he wants them to feel the pain being inflicted on Americans being overburdened by taxes.

“I didn’t wish for anyone to die, but I said I do wish for them to feel our pain,” he said. “No one cares about me, they all make their promises and then go do what they goddamn feel.”

Malzone, who briefly considered running against Congressman Frank Guinta, posted the message on the Merrimack Tea Facebook page.

Mr. President, This Is A Big F*ing Deal – Part 2

As Donald Trump would say, what the Supreme Court did Thursday in upholding President Obama’s Affordable Healthcare Act is “HUGE!”

Even Mitt Romney realized the magnitude of what would happen if ObamaCare was declared constitutional. On the days leading up to the Court’s decision, Mitt Romney was heard at various campaign events saying, “if this law is unconstitutional, that would prove that Obama wasted his presidency.”

Needless to say, the Supreme Court – whose main task is to interpret laws in accordance with the Constitution of the United States – disagreed with Mitt Romney wholeheartedly.

But if we are to apply Romney’s logic to this, wouldn’t it mean that the President’s first term was not wasted but turned out to be a tremendous success? Wouldn’t it then mean that President Obama has done his job in accordance to the Constitution – approved and validated by the highest Court in the land – and furthermore, if we apply Romney’s logic to this situation, wouldn’t it mean that Romney, with his everlasting calls to repeal ObamaCare, is going against a Supreme Court that called the law constitutional, thus, is he not going against the United States Constitution?

When President signed the Affordable Health Care Act into law in 2010, Vice President Biden was overheard whispering in the President’s ear, “Mr President, this is a big f*cking deal.” With the Supreme validating the constitutionality of the law on Thursday, consider this a big f*cking deal… part 2!

And by the way, why exactly are Republicans pushing Mitt Romney as their presidential candidate? The  man is apparently against the Constitution of the United States.

The Health of the Nation

Years from now, will you remember where you were and what you were doing when the Supreme Court issued its ruling in the Affordable Care case? It was that important and it seemed as though just about everybody was following it like a World Series game. Participatory democracy gets no better than that.

Of course there were the obvious glitches, such as CNN and FOX getting the story wrong at first. You’d think that after waiting three months for the decision, they could have waited an extra 3 minutes for their experts to parse the details. Then there’s the story that talks about a “jaw-dropping switch,” meaning Chief Justice John Robert’s joining the four liberals on the court to uphold the law. This completely unexpected move is only unexpected if you happened to buy into the narrative that the law, or at least the mandate, was toast because, well, the media and the Intrade market said it was.

Even better was the comeuppance of the ultra-smug conservative media that was absolutely sure that they had this case sewn up as soon as Don Verilli was done speaking. That he’s been vindicated (need free registration to read this link) in both the health care and immigration cases speaks volumes about what people don’t know about what passes muster in court arguments.

The big questions, though, are obviously political. In terms of policy, Obama has his base-energizing victory and a policy he now has to defend with gusto, something that’s been missing since the bill was passed. Polls have shown that the mandate is still unpopular, but other aspects of the bill have support. It’s time for the administration to start selling this hard and in earnest. More Americans will have health insurance, seniors will no longer have to tolerate the doughnut hole in their Medicare prescription coverage, and those with preexisting conditions will now be covered. Many changes have already taken effect. More states will also need to set up exchanges to help people find insurance.

As for Mitt Romney, he’s already addressed the court’s decision with a full-throated call for repeal, calling the law a violation of our freedoms and bad for the economy. His problem is that today the court also indirectly validated the Massachusetts health care law that Romney championed as governor. And remember that the mandate was originally a Republican idea meant to provide an alternative to the Clinton health care plan of the early ’90. So for Mitt, this decision means that he has to run even harder against one of the signature accomplishments of his political career. The good news for him is that his base is also fired up because of today’s decision. The bad news is that he’s going to run against the whole law, even the parts that people like, and he doesn’t have an alternative to the clear problem of the uninsured and the very sick except to say that the magic of the marketplace will cure their ills. That’s a tough sell.

The other political issue is the election horse race. Obama’s poll numbers have been improving for the past week, both nationally and in several swing states. There are some states that Obama needs to win that are now considered tossups, which is better news for Romney, but the trend is toward Obama. The Gallup and Rasmussen tracking polls will give us some idea of the effect of today’s ruling, so I’ll check back in with that early next week, and I’ll have a full polling report on July 6.

In the end, Barack Obama rolled a huge set of dice by asking the Supreme Court to rule on this issue in the middle of an election campaign, and he won a huge victory. He’s also staked his positions on marriage equality and immigration reform for the children of illegals that speak to fairness and equality. Mitt Romney is now in a position where he has to disagree, and that puts him at odds with basic American values. June was always going to be a pivotal month. It has not let us down.

Supreme Court Says ObamaCare Is Good

The Supreme Court upheld President Obama’s health care law today in a splintered, complex opinion that gives Obama a major election-year victory.

Basically, a bare majority of the justices said that the individual mandate — the requirement that most Americans buy health insurance or pay a fine — is constitutional as a tax.

“Because the Constitution permits such a tax, it is not our role to forbid it, or to pass upon its wisdom or fairness,” wrote Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in an opinion that reflected a 5-4 vote on on the question.

Roberts — a conservative appointed by President George W. Bush — provided a key vote to preserve the landmark health care law, which figures to be a major issue in Obama’s re-election bid against Republican opponent Mitt Romney.

Mitt Romney – I Am Very Pleased With The Individual Mandate – Video

A Conservative website is highlighting Mitt Romney, in video from a March 2006 press conference unearthed by American Bridge, delivering a ringing endorsement of the individual mandate … and claiming credit for having proposed it in the first place.

With regards to the mandate, the individual responsibility program which I proposed, I was very pleased to see that the compromise from the two houses includes the personal responsibility principle, that is essential for bringing health care costs down for everyone, and for getting everybody the health insurance they deserve and need. So I was very pleased with that development.

George Zimmerman Called a Bully By Former Co-Worker

His identity is hidden because he fears retaliation from those who supports George Zimmerman, but the details emerging from a former co-worker of George Zimmerman paints another disgusting picture of Trayvon Martin’s killer.

He is an Arab-American and he claims that as an employee at CarMax in Sandford Florida, George Zimmerman bullied him and made racist comments to him, calling him as a terrorist and making fun of his accent.

The bullying and racial comments became so intense that the unnamed man wrote a letter to management complaining about George Zimmerman. Zimmerman was not reprimanded by management and eventually got away with his behavior because of what the man called “a great poker face.”

‘The guy was so convincing when he was confronted by management to the point where I doubted my own self,’ said the unnamed man.

‘I would not be surprised if he got away with it,’ [referring to the Trayvon Martin shooting].

‘He’s got, like you say, a good poker face. Great poker face.

‘That pretty much summarises this guy’s personality.

‘Great poker face.’

Breaking News: There Is No Individual Mandate In The Health Care Law

The Supreme Court is about to deliver their decision on whether President Obama’s Health Care Law, also called ObamaCare, is Constitutional. Republicans have accused Democrats and the President of forcing Americans to purchase a product through what they said was an “individual mandate.” This mandate they claimed, was unconstitutional and they fought the law through the lower courts all the way to the Supreme Court.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court will deliver its decision. But will the Health Care Law be invalidated by the Supreme Court if an individual mandate does not exist?

Lawrence O’Donnell of MSNBC’s The Last Word explains;

Mitt Romney Thinks Explaining Outsourcing/Off-Shoring Makes Everything Okay

Apparently, there is a difference between “off-shoring” and “outsourcing” jobs, and Mitt Romney thinks knowing the difference makes everything all right – especially if you are a victim of having your job outsourced or off-shored.

Mitt Romney was recently referred to as a “pioneer” in sending American jobs overseas. His advisors tried to ease any anxiety Americans may have felt hearing about Romney’s early resume by explaining the difference. But something tells me that explanation didn’t go over too well.

The President spoke to an audience at one of his campaign stops and mentioned the Romney outsourcing/off-shoring episode.

Bill Clinton Explains The Dangers of Ending ObamaCare

Former President Bill Clinton spoke at a recent fundraiser earlier this week and warned of the dangers this country faced if the Supreme Court rules against President Obama’s Health Care Law. Given his special abilities to explain complex matters to a two-year old, Mr. Clinton broke it down like this”

If the Supreme Court decides to invalidate the individual mandate in the Affordable Care Act, there will be consequences, Clinton said, which he claims aren’t being reported, and which he spelled out:

• Changing the health-care delivery system has already produced two years in a row of 4 percent inflation in health-care costs. This is the first time in 50 years that health-care costs have gone up so little. Killing the Affordable Care Act would let inflation loose again.

• Some 2.6 million people ages 21 to 26, who now have insurance coverage for the first time because they can be carried under their parents’ policy, would lose it.

• $1.3 billion dollars in insurance refunds have already been paid to businesses and individuals because now the law says 85 percent of your premium has to go to health care and not to profits and promotion. (California hasn’t reported yet, but will likely increase that figure to more than $1.5 billion.) Refunds would shrink.

• If Republicans succeed in persuading the Supreme Court to repeal the individual mandate, somewhere between 12 million and 16 million Americans will be unable to get health insurance because of preexisting conditions.

The Daily Beast also reports that “Clinton predicted that if the law is declared unconstitutional, Republicans will suffer a backlash when millions of Americans calculate what they have lost. Before the Affordable Care Act passed, two thirds of all the applications for bankruptcy were because of health-care emergencies, a consequence likely to return if health care inflation again rises precipitously.”

“Before Mitt Romney as governor signed the individual mandate, Massachusetts had the highest health-care costs in America. Today, that state is seventh, because inflation in health-care costs in that state have been much lower than in the country as a whole. Why? The mandate prevents insurance companies from shifting their promotional costs to consumers, Clinton said.”

The Supreme Court will issue its decision on Health Care on Thursday.

Poll Shows Mormons Excited About Mitt Romney’s Lies… sorry… Candidacy

Most Mormons in Utah believe that Mitt Romney’s rise to become the likely GOP presidential nominee is a good thing for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But many do not trust the media to cover the church fairly, according to a new poll released Monday (June 25).

The study, conducted by Key Research and Brigham Young University’s Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy, is believed to be the first to gauge Mormons’ reaction to Romney’s barrier-breaking achievement. He is the first Mormon to clinch the presidential nomination of a major U.S. political party.

More than eight in 10 Utah Mormons said they are “very excited” or “somewhat excited” about Romney’s feat. Nearly as many (77 percent) said his nomination is a good thing for the LDS church; just 2 percent told pollsters it was a negative development.

Utah Mormons do not differ in many respects from Mormons in other states, according to studies conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.
