Jon Stewart said it, not me? But as usual, Stewart hits the nail directly on the head!
In his latest broadcast, Stewart began by giving Texas its props. “You did a great job handling your Ebola,” Stewart said about Texas. He then took on the so-called “Ebola-outbreak” and spoke more specifically about the utter panic the governors of New York and New Jersey put in place to deal with the “outbreak,” – a 21 days lock-down of anyone who went to Africa to help fight the disease!
In his segment, Stewart spoke about a nurse who just returned home and was immediately placed in this lockdown. She was placed in a tent with no heat, now hot water and no functioning toilet. Essentially being held captive in New Jersey, payback for her good deeds overseas.
In one of the clips Stewart showed, the nurse expressed her frustrations with the situation, saying that Chris Christie is no doctor and did not even see her personally, so the basis for him keeping her captive was uncalled for. Stewart then played a clip showing Christie’s response with him saying that the woman will understand once she settles down and reflect on the situation. Stewart agreed with the woman, then added “why does Chris Christie have to be a dick about everything?”
The segment went on with Stewart questioning if this nation is still the Home of the Brave, considering all the fear Americans are expressing over a couple of cases of Ebola! He then implied that we are probably still a brave nation, “unless you have a fever.”
The Texas nurse got the deadly disease when she treated Thomas Eric Duncan, who has since died. Amber Vinson was cleared of the disease last week and will make a public statement today.
Vinson, 29, was admitted to the hospital’s Serious Communicable Disease Unit on Oct. 15 and was declared free of the deadly virus last week.
She is expected to make her first public statement during a national news conference at 1 p.m. E.T., according to the hospital.
Vinson was diagnosed with the virus on Oct. 14. A day later, the Dallas resident was flown by air ambulance to Atlanta for treatment at Emory, which has a specialized unit trained in treating Ebola.
“Amber is steadily regaining her strength and her spirits are high,” her family said in a statement last week. “We appreciate everyone for keeping Amber in your thoughts and prayers.”
The 21 days mandatory quarantine for anyone who came in contact with Ebola patients in West Africa – a quarantine instituted by New York’s Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey’s Gov. Chris Christie – has changed… somewhat.
Under the revised New York guidelines, medical professors who have had contact with Ebola patients will be quarantined at home and receive twice-daily monitoring if they have no symptoms. The state will also pay for any lost compensation, if they are not paid by a volunteer organization.
Cuomo had criticized Dr. Craig Spencer, who tested positive for Ebola on Thursday, for not obeying a 21-day voluntary quarantine. But on Sunday, he called the health care workers “heroes” and said his administration would encourage more medical workers to volunteer to fight Ebola.
In this week’s address, the President discussed the measures we are taking to respond to Ebola cases at home, while containing the epidemic at its source in West Africa. This week, we continued to focus on domestic preparedness, with the creation of new CDC guidelines and the announcement of new travel measures ensuring all travelers from the three affected countries are directed to and screened at one of five airports.
The President emphasized that it’s important to follow the facts, rather than fear, as New Yorkers did yesterday when they stuck to their daily routine. Ebola is not an easily transmitted disease, and America is leading the world in the fight to stamp it out in West Africa.
While doctors and nurses have been trained to deal with Ebola and the proper way to dispose of protective gear, it seems the NYPD still have some learning to do.
Seen below, two officers working in the vicinity of the first ebola patient’s home, simply removed their gloves and crime scene tape and dumped the objects in the garbage on the sidewalk.
Republicans have blocked the confirmation of the Surgeon General for over a year now, but don’t tell that to Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz. While trying to question the wisdom of Obama’s new “ebola czar,” Chaffetz wondered why the job didn’t got the the Surgeon General.
“Why not have the surgeon general head this up?” Chaffetz asked.”I think that’s a very legitimate question. At least you have somebody who has a medical background whose been confirmed by the United States Senate.”
“It begs the question, what does the surgeon general do?” he added. “Why aren’t we empowering that person?”
Later on, after it was pointed out that Republicans are the stumbling block to a new Surgeon General, Chaffetz spoke with the Huffington Post and tried to explain his confusion. Clearly, according to his explanation, it was our fault for not understanding what he didn’t say.
“Well I do know there’s an acting surgeon general, I understand that,” Chaffetz said. “The surgeon general is also an office. It’s the Office of the Surgeon General. I know there’s some confusion there, but I don’t think I was confused.”
“I question why we would have a person that was put forward as a czar, when you do have an acting surgeon general,” he continued. “The point is the person the president has appointed doesn’t feel prepared to come before Congress.”
Of course Chaffetz makes no sense. He has no reasoning except to try and blame his confusion on the listener. Apparently it was our fault for assuming “Surgeon General” means an actual person doing an actual job. Regina M. Benjamin who served from 2009 to 2013 was clearly not a person, but, according to Chaffetz, an office. And all the other individuals who served since 1871 when the first position was occupied, were apparently “offices,” not people.
Just like the President is an Office, not the person the people voted for.
What else can I say about the idiot named Donald Trump that would convey to you how much of an idiot he really is? Well how about this: Donald Trump is now asking for the President’s resignation because a doctor traveled from West Africa to New York, then developed the Ebola virus days later.
Trump, in the vastness of his cranium, took to Twitter moments after it was revealed that a doctor may be infected with the virus and demanded that president’s resignation. Said trump, “If this doctor, who so recklessly flew into New York from West Africa, has Ebola, then Obama should apologize to the American people & resign!”
First of all, the doctor who Trump said “recklessly flew into New York” was not piloting the plane. And, said plane did not hit any of Trump’s buildings during this “reckless” flight. There might have been some turbulence but nothing to classify the flight as “reckless.” Actually, turbulence during a flight is common and quite frankly, expected. His plane did not almost hit the World Financial Center nor did the plane land anywhere near Wall Street. In fact, it was a rather non-eventful flight as nothing out of the ordinary was reported to traffic control. I know, I checked.
Putting the “recklessly flew into New York” claim aside, Trump wants Obama to resign because in a city that has 8.4 million people, one doctor contracted Ebola in another country while he was there helping the less fortunate. In case you forgot, Trump is the same one that said anyone traveling to West Africa to help these victims should “suffer the consequences” of their decision.
The doctor Trump hates so much is currently in isolation in one of the best hospitals in the nation! After he arrived in New York on October 17th, he checked his own temperature twice a day until the first symptoms of Ebola began manifesting on October 23rd. When he saw the signs, the doctor immediately reported his condition and was transported to Bellevue.
But that’s not good enough for the hateful old man named Trump! He apparently wants the doctor to suffer the consequences of his decision and die because he chose to help others. And he wants the doctor to die somewhere in West Africa! And then, he want’s Obama out!
Why stop at resignation Trump, why not call for Obama’s impeachment and possible imprisonment and, AND, maybe you can have him deported after he serves his prison term. Sidenote, you should lock him up for life and then deport him back to Kenya after he serves his life sentence! That’ll teach that Obama!
Trump, you are an idiot, just in case it wasn’t said earlier in this post!
They must be listening to the medical experts like Sarah Palin and John McCain on Fox News and those other Republicans in Congress.
Again folks, according to the CDC and real medical experts, the Ebola virus is not airborne. The only way to contract the virus is by coming in direct contact with the bodily fluids of an ebola victim.
Dr. Craig Spencer was working with Doctors Without Borders treating Ebola victims in West Africa. He traveled from that location and arrived at JFK airport in New York on October 17th. While here, it was revealed that the doctor checked his temperature twice a day but found no evidence of ebola until today, October 23rd, when his temperature rose to 103 degrees.
According to information disclosed during a press conference, Dr. Craig Spencer had no signs of Ebola for the days between October 17th to October 23rd. During those days, the doctor went to The Gutter Bowling Alley in Brooklyn New York. That Bowling Alley is now reportedly shut down since news broke that Dr. Spencer was there. Spencer also went jogging, rode the A train, the L train and the 1 train.
When Dr. Spencer started feeling the first symptoms of the disease today, he called his employer and was then immediately transported to Bellevue Hospital where he is now in isolation. His fiance and two other friends who came in close contact with him are also in isolation for the 21 days period.
Dr. Spencer is being held in an isloated section of Bellevue Hospital and according to information provided at the press conference, Bellevue is 1 of 8 other hospitals in New York especially capable of handling ebola cases. New Yorkers are asked to carry on their days as normal. According to Mayor DeBlasio, if you are not exposed the bodily fluids of an ebola patient, “you are not at risk!”
It never ceases to amaze me what cowards Americans are. They are afraid of everything. Afraid of terrorism, afraid of air travel, afraid of countries thousands of miles away, afraid of Cuba, afraid of rare diseases. Yet somehow they think they are the most courageous people in the world. The rest of the world doesn’t see it that way, which would be the majority of the earth. And for good reason because it’s not true.
Three people have contracted Ebola, only two of them while in the United States. Both of those people are nurses that had direct contact with the man who died. That’s it. Yet, there are screams for travel bans and paranoia over how easy it is to contract the disease. None of it is based in reality, just fear and of course crass politics. And hey right wingers..don’t tell me about Obama’s “late” response to Ebola when your hero Reagan let over 40,000 Americans die of AIDS before he would even mention the word!
What is really killing Americans at an alarming rate is obesity, alcohol and cigarettes. This is reality, but all we hear about is how frightened Americans are over Ebola. About as frightened as they are over ISIS. Neither poses any imminent threat at all. AT ALL. But they want travel bans as well as boots on the ground in Iraq so more strangers can die in the name of “freedom.”
It’s not freedom at all but fear. They are afraid so they want others to protect them from their uniquely American fears. Notice how most other nations including Canada have no such fears. They don’t worry about ISIS or Ebola the way Americans do. Maybe the real fear should be with Texas and its health care system. A place where they send you home from the hospital with 103 fever and a free cowboy hat and an autographed Rick Perry head shot.
It’s stunning how Americans have the inability to look around them and see how other countries handle things. It’s like they live in a vacuum. The first reaction to any crisis is fear. Not a common sense solution or a dialogue but outright hysteria. There is no weighing options because that would take brains and courage. Two things that too many Americans are lacking. Stop flights! Don’t allow them damn foreigners in our schools, to learn or teach! Doesn’t matter if you aren’t from anywhere near West Africa or Africa for that matter…you look foreign so you must have the Ebola! You must be feared!
It’s fucking pathetic. It continues generation to generation because kids see their parents being afraid so they become afraid. Speaking of the children, an 11 year old shot and killed an albino deer and now feels like a “rock star” according to his wonderful father. Albino deer are so rare that I didn’t even know they existed. They are also beautiful. They don’t inspire fear at all. They inspire hope about nature and what evolution has given us. Yes evolution. Because if they were created by the lord why would most Christians not be up in arms about the murder of one..right?
The murder took place in Howell, Michigan. Mostly Michigan is fine, but not Howell. It is a right wing shit fest. Home to the KKK. No wonder this kid is a hero there. So are guys in sheets. Now I don’t want to be too hard on the kid. I do however despise his parents. Instead of teaching their son about empathy and concern for weaker creatures, they have taught him to kill and to love it. To bask in it. Maybe a school or a politician can be his next target? For this there should be a nice place in hell prepared for them. The same can be said for the right wing propaganda ragUSA Today that actually glorified the killing.
This is an all American story for sure. If the obstacle is tough and powerful like ISIS or Ebola, we cower. If it’s an easy target like a poor Albino deer we shoot to kill and show off. What courage! I know what…let’s sing “God Bless America” one more time! Notice how they don’t have the need to sing about blessing Canada in the middle of every hockey game? But Americans wouldn’t notice that, they never notice anything outside their own little universe. Other nations advance while we are stuck in the dark ages.
How to deal with terrorism or a disease? Fear and discrimination. How to raise a child? Violence and power is good, honorable. Dress them up in camo (what war are they fighting?) and send them out to kill nature, destroy the environment, hey it’s OK, you are an American son!
Fear the unknown and the strong, bully the weak and the defenseless. Makes my skin crawl.
TPM is reporting that a healthcare worker was admitted on Thursday to Bellevue Hospital in New York City to be tested for the Ebola virus, according to the New York City Department of Health.
In a statement on its website, the department said the patient had recently traveled in one of the three West African countries facing an outbreak of the virus (Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.)
The individual was transferred to Bellevue by a specially trained team equipped with hazmat suits. Tests were expected to be back within 12 hours, according to the statement.
The patient exhibited “fever and gastrointestinal symptoms,” according to the health department. Taken together with the recent travel history, the city decided to test the healthcare worker for Ebola after consulting with Bellevue and the Center For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
This is good news for America, bad news for Republicans. They thought they would be able to use Ebola as a boogeyman, scaring Americans into voting for them this November. But with stories like this, Republicans will just have to go back to their other scare tactics, like, OMG, there us a black man in the White House!
Doctors no longer detect Ebola in a Texas nurse who flew to Ohio and back before she was diagnosed with the virus, her family said Wednesday.
Officials at Emory University Hospital and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention couldn’t detect Ebola in Amber Vinson as of Tuesday evening, her family said in a statement released through a media consultant. Doctors usually do two tests a day apart before saying they can’t detect the virus. It’s unclear how many tests Vinson has had.
Vinson’s mother, Debra Berry, spoke to her Wednesday, and Vinson has been approved for transfer from isolation, the statement said.
“We all know that further treatment will be necessary as Amber continues to regain strength, but these latest developments have truly answered prayers and bring our family one step closer to reuniting with her at home,” Berry said.
Vinson, 29, remains in treatment at Emory, near Atlanta. Emory wouldn’t release any information about the patient, hospital spokeswoman Holly Korschun said.
