Chris Christie – “I would rather die than be in the United States Senate”

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie made some rather interesting comments over the weekend. Speaking to the NAACP in New Jersey, Christy said that being senator is nowhere in his future, that he would rather die than serving in that position.

“I would rather die than be in the United States Senate. Okay? I would be bored to death. Could you imagine me banging around that chamber with 99 other people, asking for a motion on the amendment in the subcommittee? Forget it.”

“It would be over, everybody,” Christie said, the crowd apparently amused by the thought. “You’d watch me just walk out and walk right into the Potomac River and drown. That would be it.”

Christie also promised that he would never run for public office in New Jersey again. And considering his dismal performance as governor and the low approval ratings he received from New Jersey residents, I’m sure they’re applauding his decision to stay out of Jersey politics.

“Believe me, by the way, when I say ‘I’m never running for public office in New Jersey again. I mean I’ll never run for public office in New Jersey again.”

There goes the Applause!

Barber Slashed Man’s Throat in California

An Imperial Beach barber sliced his customer’s neck in the middle of a straight razor shave Monday, police said.

Cops arrested 22-year-old Daniel Flores on attempted murder charges shortly after the nightmare slashing at Vic’s Barber Shop, Fox 5 San Diego reported.

Witnesses said there was no fight between Flores and his customer, 33-year-old Timothy Paul Vaughn. Instead, the Sweeny Todd-like hairdresser cut the man’s throat during the shave, bolted from the store and fled to his aunt’s house, where police nabbed him.

Vaughn’s condition is not known, but he is expected to survive, police said.

Police did not detail the two men’s relationship: it’s not clear if Vaughn was a long-time client or a new customer. Investigators have not discussed a possible motive.

Ebola Patient in a Germany Hospital has Died

“The man was the third patient to arrive in Germany in recent weeks for treatment of Ebola, and the first to die.”
———–
A 56-year-old male Ebola patient who had been working with the United Nations in Liberia died overnight at the hospital in Leipzig where he was
being treated, the hospital said Tuesday in a statement quoted by the German news media.

The brief statement gave no further details. The man was the third patient to arrive in Germany in recent weeks for treatment of Ebola, and the first to die.

The first patient, a Senegalese man who worked for the World Health Organization, was treated in Hamburg from late August until Oct. 3, when he was released. He has since returned home. The second patient, a Ugandan doctor who was working in West Africa for an Italian aid organization, continues to receive treatment at a hospital in Frankfurt.

The St. Georg clinic in Leipzig, where the man who died was treated, announced his arrival last Thursday in a statement. At the time, doctors said his condition was critical, but stable, and there were no further updates on his status.

Watch The “Republican Cuts Kill” Ad – Must See TV

This is what I’ve tried to say for a long time but I couldn’t get the right words to make this point. Simply put, Republican Cuts Kill! That’s all there is to say, really!

This is not a joke folks!

From The Agenda Project: “Republican Cuts Kill,’ which was produced by the Agenda Project Action Fund, mixes disturbing footage of the Ebola outbreak—including images of body bags, hazmat suits, and corpses—with clips of Mitch McConnell, Pat Roberts, Rand Paul, and Republicans in some of the most competitive races around the country demanding more spending cuts. The demand for cuts is juxtaposed against testimony from top CDC and NIH officials detailing how budget cuts substantially hampered their ability to address the crisis.”

Wendy Davis Hits Greg Abbott With a Wheelchair Ad – Video

This ad has caused some controversy with some people saying that it was done in poor taste considering the fact that her Republican opponent, Greg Abbott, is wheelchair bound.

But for what’s it’s worth, I agree with this ad and the purpose it serves. Although the optics may be debatable, the facts presented in the ad are undeniable. Greg Abbott used the system to get compensation for an unfortunate event that left him disabled, but he fought others trying to use that same system for their benefit.

“In 1984, Greg Abbott sought out and received justice following a horrible injury, rightly so…receiving millions of dollars. And I’m glad, he deserved justice for the terrible tragedy that he endured,” Davis said at her Fort Worth, Texas, field office. “But then he turned around and built his career working to deny the very same justice that he received to his fellow Texans rightly seeking it for themselves.”

The Political Muddle

If the sentiments expressed in this article in the New York Times today is any indication, then the Democrats are in deep trouble in the November Senate elections. President Obama still has his fans, but even people who voted for him are losing some faith that he can lead the country out of its present political torpor in the last two years of his term. His opponents, and at this point there are more than ever, are downright gleeful at the thought of having the GOP take both houses of Congress, though they do express frustration and anger at his failures.

RealClearPolitics is being a bit coy about it, but most of the recent polling gives the Republicans leads in the states they need to win to take control of the chamber. The same is true over at Electoral-Vote, except the Votemaster is not being coy at all and is saying at this point that the GOP will claim at least 52 seats after the elections. And even over at the Princeton Election Consortium the news for Democrats is not positive, with the prognostication currently calling for 51 Republicans come January.

Does this mean that it’s over? Not at all. Democrats famously under-perform in midterm election polling and there’s still a half-month to go before the votes are counted. President Obama has lent his also famous get-out-the-vote apparatus to the national party and most polling organizations make an assumption that the electorate in 2014 will look a lot like that of 2010. If that’s true, then the GOP will win. If not, and more of the Democrats’ constituents come out to vote, then there will be many surprises on election night.

The mood of the country will have a good deal to do with the outcome, and right now the Republicans have the upper hand. Of course, they are running on the fear of Ebola and ISIS, which they are convinced will both run through the United States over the next couple of weeks. It also doesn’t help that the seats the Democrats have to defend are in mostly red states.

If the Republicans win this year, then payback will most likely come during a more favorable cycle for Democrats in 2016. In the meantime, look for Congress to try to repeal the ACA, continue to investigate Benghazi, fortify the Mexican border against terrorists, and lower taxes on the wealthy.

You know, the real issues.

On Consequential Presidents, Paul Krugman Ranks President Obama Above Reagan

According to Paul Krugman, President Obama is a better President than Ronald Reagan ever was. Krugman ranks the present President third behind FDR and LBJ. According to the Nobel Price winner, the most consequential presidents so far are FDR, LBJ, President Obama and then Ronald Reagan.

Former President Ronald Reagan has been used and cited by Conservatives and Republicans as the standard bearer for being a great American president.

Krugman says he ranked Obama above Reagan because, among other things, “Reagan did not leave the structure of American society particularly different.” Krugman said that Reagan “did not in fact change the basic legacy of Lyndon Johnson and FDR.” When compared to President Obama and the policies he has so far put in place, Krugman argues that “Obama really has left the world, has left America a different place.”

Krugman cited the Affordable Care Act, financial reform, and environmental policies as Obama’s chief accomplishments, while arguing that the economy didn’t go off a cliff and that Obama kept us from idiotic foreign entanglements.

Hospital Worker in Texas Tests Positive for Ebola

A health care worker at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas has tested positive for ebola, the first case of ebola transmission in the United States.

The unidentified nurse had helped treat Thomas Eric Duncan, who died last week from the virus after traveling to the Dallas area from Liberia. The patient reported a low-grade fever Friday night and was immediately isolated and tested in Austin; the positive results were received last night.

Officials said Sunday morning that the patient, who was in the low risk pool, had complied with all CDC guidelines. A hazmat team has been dispatched the health worker’s apartment; officials do not believe the patient’s pet poses any threat.

Detroit Police Suspended for Stealing Murder Victim’s Watch

Detroit Police Chief James Craig

A Detroit police homicide sergeant has been suspended after department officials found him wearing a murder victim’s expensive watch.

Sgt. Alex Vinson was the officer in charge of a case several months ago involving an unknown murder victim who was found wearing an expensive, German-made watch, Detroit Police Chief James Craig confirmed.

The watch was photographed and put into storage in the Homicide Section’s property room. The victim has not been identified, and the homicide case has gone cold.

This week, while Vinson was in Idaho for advanced police training, fellow homicide detectives decided to reopen the case.

The detectives wanted to take another look at the watch — but when they removed the victim’s belongings from the property room, the watch wasn’t the same one that was photographed at the start of the case. Instead, it was a cheaper model, Craig confirmed.
The detectives quickly informed police officials about the discrepancy, Craig said.

“We were made aware of this a few nights ago and immediately initiated an internal investigation,” Craig said. “We directed (Vinson) to return home.”
Craig added the FBI helped police recover the watch, which Vinson was wearing during the training session. Vinson returned to Michigan Wednesday, and was read his Miranda rights by Internal Affairs officers.

“The case in ongoing, and the sergeant has been suspended while we prepare a warrant for review by prosecutors,” Craig said.
