Rush Limbaugh – “Why Don’t The Homeless Live With Their Families? That Would Make Them Un-Homeless”

California is trying to become the 37th state to participate in a program that gives low-cost cell phones to low-income families and the homeless. The program called The LifeLine Cell Phone program is provided by mobile carrier Assurance Wireless in 36 other states. The purpose of the program is to keep low-income families and the homeless involved with agencies and services that can help their situation.

“This is great – it is transformative for homeless and low-income people,” said Bevan Dufty, San Francisco’s head of homeless initiatives. “I expect San Francisco to be in the forefront and a model city for this program. Fundamentally, to be in the mainstream of our society you have to have a phone,” he said. “And really, for the homeless population, you need a cell phone because they don’t have a home to hard-wire one into. We really need this plan.”

The low cost cell phones are not free. Participants would pay $20.00 for the phone and the initial set up and will receive 250 free minutes per month. They will pay $.10 per minute for time used over 250 minutes. Californians earning less than $14,702 per year are eligible to take part in the program.

But to hear Rush Limbaugh today, helping these poor and homeless people with this service is the wrong move for California. “Why don’t the homeless live with their families?” Rush asked. “That would make them un-homeless,” the Republican mouthpiece said, before he began laughing.

Republicans like Limbaugh credit the Obama administration for the program. They even call the phones “Obama Phones” disregarding the fact that the program began under the Reagan administration in 1985, then started offering cell phones in 2005 under the George W. Bush Administration.

Who Is America’s Most Unpopular Senator? Survey Says… Mitch McConnell

I’m not surprised.

McConnell apparently has a 55 percent disapproval rating in his home state of Kentucky, while just 37 percent of his constituency approves of him. PP Polling says this gives him the worst numbers of any U.S. senator. Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) previously held this title.

Among Republicans, McConnell’s numbers are better, with 59 percent approving of his performance and 28 percent disapproving.

The AIG Bailout Worked – Taxpayers Earned $22.7 Billion in Profit

President Obama did what he felt was right. He authorized the bailout of AIG and received what seemed to be a never ending amount of criticism from Republicans and their news channel, Fox News.

But according to the latest report from the Treasury Department, it appears that the AIG Bailout was the right move, and now the president and the American people are laughing all the way to the bank.

The Treasury Department said on Tuesday that it had sold its remaining stake in the American International Group, earning about $7.6 billion from the sale.

The government sold the 234.2 million shares at $32.50 each, a small discount from the closing price of $33.36 on Monday. The block of shares represented a 15.9 percent stake in the insurer.

With the latest sale, taxpayers have gained about $22.7 billion from a bailout that many predicted would prompt a staggering loss. In an effort to stabilize the global banking system, the government rescued A.I.G. just days after the failure of Lehman Brothers.

The stock sale also means that A.I.G. is a fully private enterprise once more, after the government owned as much as 92 percent of its shares. After the sale, the Treasury Department will hold only warrants to buy about 2.7 million shares of A.I.G. common stock, which will also be sold to generate a profit.

Small Ball Lindsey Graham Calls Obama Is A “Small Ball Guy”

Republican South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham says President Barack Obama is a “small ball guy” but it’s time for him to start “manning up” on cuts to earned benefits like Medicare and Social Security.

Speaking to Fox News host Martha MacCallum on Monday, Graham suggested that Republicans should not agree to tax rate hikes on the rich and should hold a debt ceiling increase hostage until Democrats agreed to “entitlement reform.”

“Here’s where the president is going to have a rude awakening,” the senior senator from South Carolina opined. “In February or March, you have to raise the debt ceiling and I can tell you this, there’s a hardening on the Republican side. We’re not going to raise the debt ceiling, we’re not going to let Obama borrow any more money or any American Congress borrow any more money until we fix this country from becoming Greece. And that requires significant entitlement reform to save Social Security and Medicare from bankruptcy.”

MacCallum noted that Obama told business leaders last week that he would not “play that game” with Republicans because “we’ve got to break that habit” of allowing them to use the debt ceiling in budget negotiations.

“Yes, we will play that game, Mr. President, because this is not a game,” Graham insisted. “The game you’re playing is small ball. You’re talking about raising rates on the top 2 percent that would run the government for 11 days. You just got re-elected. How about doing something big that’s not liberal? How about doing something big that really is bipartisan? Every big idea he has is a liberal idea that drowns us in debt.”

“How about manning up here, Mr. President, and use your mandate to bring this country together to stop us from becoming Greece?” he continued. “So when it comes debt ceiling time, Mr. President, you’re going to have a Republican Party that’s going to make sure we save Medicare and Social Security from bankruptcy and we save this country from becoming Greece.”

Graham concluded: “He’s a small ball guy. He’s afraid of his own party.”
