He was the mayor of Toronto but you probably wouldn’t have known that if it weren’t for the nightly news portraying the Toronto mayor as a loudmouth, weed and crack smoking conservative who always knew where the next party was. With the world’s attention focused on him and wondering what he will do next, Ford was diagnosed with a tumor in his stomach and in 2014, announced he would not seek re-election to the Mayor’s office in Toronto.
Today, a statement from Ford’s family told the news that Rob Ford had died.
“With heavy hearts and profound sadness, the Ford family announces the passing of their beloved son, brother, husband and father,” his family said in a statement. “A dedicated man of the people, Councillor Ford spent his life serving the citizens of Toronto.”
CNN is reporting that Toronto Mayor Rob Ford soon will begin chemotherapy to treat a rare and aggressive cancer, a doctor at Mount Sinai Hospital in the city said Wednesday.
Dr. Zane Cohen said Ford has a malignant liposarcoma, and a second biopsy on his tumor done Monday shows it is aggressive.
“However, we are optimistic about this tumor,” Cohen said.
Ford, who recently announced he will not run for re-election, will start chemotherapy by Friday afternoon.
The cancer has spread from the fatty tissue of Ford’s abdomen to other parts of his body, including his buttocks, Cohen said.
The doctor added that this type of tumor comprises only about 1% of all cancers and has at least 60 different types of cells, making it difficult to treat.
Rob Ford, the infamous mayor of Toronto Canada who was caught on video doing cocaine among other things, is calling it quits after being hospitalized with what is being called an abdominal tumor. The mayor has decided to focus on getting better and recommended that his brother Doug Ford, runs in his place.
“My heart is heavy when I tell you that I’m unable to continue my campaign for re-election as your mayor,” the controversial politician said in a statement Friday. Ford’s term officially ends December 1.
“People know me as a guy who faces things head on and never gives up, and as your mayor I have done just that,” Ford said. “Now I could be facing a battle of my lifetime, and I want the people of Toronto to know that I intend to face this challenge head on, and win.”
Ford asked his brother, Doug Ford, to run for mayor in the October 27 balloting.
“He told me that he needed me to take the torch while he focuses on getting better,” Doug Ford said at a press conference Friday evening outside his mother’s home. “He told me he couldn’t bear the thought of city hall returning to the old days at the expense of the good, honest, everyday people,” he said.
Doug Ford, who has been one of the mayor’s strongest supporters during the controversies that have plagued him, said he is honoring his brother’s request and would have more details next week about his own campaign for mayor.
The embattled crack pipe mayor of Toronto was found indulging with another crack pipe and this time, like all the other times, there’s a video tape.
Ford, realizing that he is once again caught with his hands in the cookie jar, admitted himself to rehab.
He released a statement. Here it is:
For Immediate Release
April 30th, 2014
Tonight I want to take some time to speak from my heart to the people of Toronto. It’s not easy to be vulnerable and this is one of the most difficult times in my life. I have a problem with alcohol, and the choices I have made while under the influence. I have struggled with this for some time.
Today, after taking some time to think about my own well-being, how to best serve the people of Toronto and what is in the best interests of my family, I have decided to take a leave from campaigning and from my duties as Mayor to seek immediate help.
I have tried to deal with these issues by myself over the past year. I know that I need professional help and I am now 100% committed to getting myself right.
I love the people of Toronto, I love being your mayor and I hope you will continue to stand by me.
With the support of my family, friends, professionals and the people of Toronto, I will conquer this.
Please keep me and my family in your prayers during these difficult days ahead.
I just want to say to the people of Toronto that I thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement. I cannot tell you enough how much I appreciate it.
The admitted crack smoker and heavy drinker has long dodged calls for him to resign or go to drug rehab. He relented Wednesday after a video, shot early Saturday morning, shows him reportedly smoking crack cocaine. An audio clip, recorded secretly Monday night, reportedly catches Ford during a drunken evening out at a bar.
THE GLOBE AND MAILToronto Mayor Rob Ford is seen in this screen grab from a recently surfaced video holding a pipe. The clip was reportedly taken Saturday morning at his sister’s house.
Rob Ford is going to rehab.
A lawyer for the crack-smoking, booze-loving Toronto mayor say he’ll take a leave of absence from the job to seek help for substance abuse.
The announcement came Wednesday as new video of Ford smoking crack as recently as Saturday has emerged via The Globe and Mail newspaper. And an audio clip, reportedly secretly recorded Monday at a suburban Toronto bar, caught the mayor cursing and ranting during a late-night drinking bout, according to the Toronto Sun.
The oft-maligned mayor of Canada’s largest city will suspend his reelection campaign as he gets help to “deal with his issues,” Ford told The Sun on Wednesday evening.
He said he is “ready to take a break.”
Ford has been urged to get help after videos of him smoking crack came out last year. He said he had smoked the drug once in a “drunken stupor” and publicly said he had cut back on his drinking.
But The Sun claims they have an audiotape from Monday of an “unruly” Ford ranting and cursing while ordering booze at a bar in Etobicoke, a Toronto suburb.
“I’d like to f—— jam her, but she doesn’t want … I can’t talk like this … I’m so sorry,” Ford reportedly says on the recording. “I forgot there’s a woman in the house.”
What could be controversial about the city of Toronto congratulating Canada’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes?
Ask Rob Ford. The Toronto mayor on Wednesday cast the sole ‘no’ vote on a City Council motion to offer the athletes kudos. Minutes earlier, he also was the only council member to vote against a proposal to name a Toronto street after the late Nelson Mandela.
Ford asked for a re-vote on both motions a half-hour later but was denied.
‘We all make errors,’ said Ford, who claimed he was stretching a sore back and voted quickly. ‘I guess I pushed the wrong button. Of course I support Nelson Mandela.’
The mayor also said he supports Olympic athletes.
Ford is seeking re-election this year despite a record of erratic behavior. After he acknowledged last year that he had smoked crack, the City Council voted to strip him of most of his mayoral powers.
Ford is known for often casting the lone dissenting vote, but his votes on Wednesday drew gasps in the council chamber. City councilor Adam Vaughn said Ford knew exactly what he was doing.
