EBay Will No Longer Sell Confederate Flag Merchandise

EBay follows in Walmart’s footsteps in banning a racist merchandise like the confederate flag from its site.

“We have decided to prohibit Confederate flags, and many items containing this image, because we believe it has become a contemporary symbol of divisiveness and racism,” eBay spokesperson Johnna Hoff said in an email to CNN. “This decision is consistent with our long-standing policy that prohibits items that promote or glorify hatred, violence and racial intolerance.”

Hoff added that the company continually monitors and evaluates its 800 million products on its site to ensure that they are “consistent with our core purpose.”

Corporate America Hangs a left

All of the tension that’s been building in the grand Republican coalition, that uneasy mix of practical business, low taxes, libertarianism and the uncompromising religious sector is now being released. And it’s not working out for the most conservative of the party’s members.

Just a week ago it seemed that at least two new states, Indiana and Arkansas, would pass religious freedom laws that would, in essence, allow people to claim that a robust religious objection to a state or federal law was enough to nullify it, at least for the objector. By the end of the week, both states had to backtrack and add key provisions that did not allow religious people from discriminating against gays and lesbians, among others. Why the change?

Corporations. Walmart. Angie’s List. Axium. et.al.

Big business has seen the light and it’s a bright one. No, not the one that people who have near-death experiences talk about. This is the one that shines into the deep dark corners of discrimination, hatred and prejudice.  Yes, corporations do love they money, but they’re also getting a bit of a soul. After all, corporations are people too, right?

But uncovering the cloistered minds of the far right isn’t the only move forward. Major national businesses are also starting to…wait for it…raise wages. Yes, I know that it’s only a dollar more an hour for now, but the prospect of rising wages for those most in need is a positive step.

Despite a conservative movement that’s made great inroads into American political, economic and social culture, the basic democratic ideals of tolerance, respect for diversity and fairness have endured and are now beginning to emerge from an era where they were somewhat battered and bruised. Americans truly want a government that will stay out of its bedrooms and workplaces even as they want to make sure that there is a safety net for life’s perplexities.

This is why I think the GOP will end up nominating another more moderate candidate in 2016. That won’t make the conservatives happy, but it really is the best hope for the party. And the Democrats had better not take their supporters for granted. The economy is better, but job growth seems to have slowed and the deal with Iran is not a slam dunk, nor should it be.

For now, though, business seems to be on the side of a wider, more inclusive market. And that’s good news.

Walmart Will Raise Its Minimum Wage to $10 an Hour

Well, it’s a start!

On Thursday, Walmart announced that it will raise all of its full-time and part-time employees’ pay to at least $9 an hour starting in April. The lowest wage will rise to $10 an hour by February of next year.

In a press release, it said it is also raising pay for the compensation range for each position, and all told says that about 500,000 employees will see a raise from the changes. It also says the raises will mean its average hourly wage for full-time workers will increase from $12.85 to $13 an hour and the average for part-time workers will increase from $9.48 to $10 an hour.

It also promised that workers “will have more control over their schedules.” The wage increases will cost more than $1 billion this fiscal year.

In announcing the changes, CEO Doug McMillion acknowledged some of the criticism that the company has sacrificed customer loyalty because of its pay practices. “We have work to do to grow the business. We know what customers want from a shopping experience, and we’re investing strategically to exceed their expectations and better position Walmart for the future,” he said. “We’re strengthening investments in our people to engage and inspire them to deliver superior customer experiences.”

Scammers Running Successful Scam Against Walmart

They goin’ spoil it for everybody!

Walmart recently announced the new program where they will match any online price from online stores like Amazon. But scammers have figured out a way to beat Wal-Mart. They post fake postings on sites like amazon.com with ridiculously low prices, then show these postings to Walmart employees and have actually got away with merchandise for practically nothing.

Walmart receipts are now popping up on sites like Reddit showing these scams are working. One user posted a Walmart receipt for a Sony Playstation 4 game console, bought for $90.00 That’s a $300.00 savings… or theft, depending on whether you view scammers as shoppers or con artists.

Somewhere in the Walmart executive offices, this policy is quickly being revised.

Walmart Toe Sucker Arrested in North Carolina

Police in Lincolnton say they have arrested a man who sucked a woman’s toes at Walmart by claiming to be studying podiatry.

Michael Brown, of Concord, was arrested around 9 p.m. Thursday and charged with misdemeanor assault on a female. Officials say Brown is a registered sex offender.

Officers with the Lincolnton Police Department said the incident happened Monday around 11:15 a.m. when a man, who claimed he was a podiatrist student, started a conversation with a woman in the store.

That woman, Erika Porras, told police that he convinced her to try on several pair of shoes in the shoe department.

“At one point the suspect took the victim’s foot, put it into his mouth and sucked the victim’s toes,” the report states.

“I was shocked,” Porras told WBTV, “He asked me not to tell anyone and said he would pay for my groceries.”

Toddler Shoots Father in Walmart Parking Lot

Consider this another example of what NRA’s Wayne LaPierre would call,  a “Responsible gun owner,” taking his gun and his child to Walmart and getting shot in return.

The Russellville Police Department is investigating an accidental shooting of a man by his child in a Walmart parking lot.

RPD Public Information Officer Drew Latch stated that police responded in the Arkansas area store at approximately 11:04 a.m. Saturday in reference to a possible shooting.

The Courier News reports, “Upon arrival, officers witnessed a man who had injuries to his back. After further investigation, it was determined the man had accidentally been shot by his child. While the child was attempting to enter the vehicle, the child accidentally grabbed a hold of a loaded shotgun, that had not been secured, to help pull himself into the vehicle (truck).”

As the child grabbed the shotgun, he or she accidentally pulled the trigger and caused the shotgun to discharge and strike his father in the back. In the back.

The child was uninjured.

The father was identified as Monty Wheeler and was transported to Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center by Pope County EMS.

His condition was reportedly deemed as stable at the time of this release.

Raw Story reports that they contacted the Russellville Police Department, but they were told that Wheeler was unknown to them, and that they would not share his current condition with Raw Story because it isn’t “his immediately [sic] family.”

Walmart Fired Pregnant Woman For Drinking Water On The Job

The Washington Post reports on this story, stating that an employee who injures his back may be allowed to stop lifting anything heavier than 20 pounds, but a pregnant woman whose doctor orders her to avoid heavy lifting? She may end up losing her job.

Heather Myers

In Myers’ case, the 18-year-old says she was just trying to stay hydrated. At her orientation a year earlier at Wal-Mart, she says employees were told they could keep water “but no juice or pop” in a sealed container while working. Suddenly that policy “changed out of the blue” during her pregnancy, she says.

Myers was working as a sales floor associate in the infant and girls wear departments in 2007, when she was pregnant with her first child. Her duties at Wal-Mart included keeping the area stocked and putting away returns. She always had a shopping cart at her side where she could stash her water bottle, she said.

Her supervisor said Myers needed a doctor’s note if she wanted to continue having a water bottle on the job, so she complied. “I told the doctor I thought it was silly to need a note for that,” she said, but she dutifully turned the note into human resources.

That wasn’t good enough. The manager told her drinking fountains were available. “I was shocked that this became such a big issue for a pregnant woman,” Myers said. “You can’t properly hydrate just by taking a sip at a water fountain.”

She continued to carry her water bottle in a cart while she restocked shelves and took care of returns. At her next appointment, her doctor brought up the issue of water and ended up writing yet another note. By this time, Myers was suffering from urinary tract infections, so drinking a plentiful amount of water had become even more crucial for her health.

The second note went to HR, but in another day or so she was confronted by the same manager, who told her, “Either the water bottle has to go or you have to go.”

Myers left.

She contacted an attorney, who sued the retail giant on her behalf. “They just thought I was a young girl they could push around,” Myers said. “They didn’t think I would stick up for myself and my baby.”

The case was settled out of court. Myers has since moved to Lindsborg, Kan. where she works for Hospira, a pharmaceutical manufacturer. During her last pregnancy, she was able to move to an office job when standing on her feet for 12 hours straight became a health risk.
