President Obama on The Buffett Rule – “Not Just About Fairness, It’s Also About Growth”

President Obama urges Congress to pass the Buffett Rule — which asks those who make more than $1 million a year to pay at least the same percentage of their income in taxes as middle class families — as a principle of fairness.

And as many Americans rush to file their taxes this weekend, it’s worth pointing out that we’ve got a tax system that doesn’t always uphold the principle of everyone doing their part.

Now, this is not just about fairness.  This is also about growth.  It’s about being able to make the investments we need to strengthen our economy and create jobs.  And it’s about whether we as a country are willing to pay for those investments.

The president then goes on to explain what the Buffett Rule is and who it will affect if members of Congress – namely Republicans – pass that bill this week.

As Warren points out, that’s not fair and it doesn’t make sense.  It’s wrong that middle-class Americans pay a higher share of their income in taxes than some millionaires and billionaires.

This week, Members of Congress are going to have a chance to set things right.  They get to vote on what we call the Buffett Rule.

It’s simple:  If you make more than $1 million every year, you should pay at least the same percentage of your income in taxes as middle-class families do.  On the other hand, if you make less than $250,000 a year — like 98 percent of American families do — your taxes shouldn’t go up.

President Obama Said North Korea Not Very Good at Launching Missiles

Barack Obama has mocked North Korea’s space technology, saying its failed launch showed the country was wasting money on rockets that “don’t work” while its people starved.

The US president told a television interviewer that the North Koreans had “been trying to launch missiles like this for over a decade now, and they don’t seem to be real good at it”.

But he called Friday’s failed launch an area of deep concern for the United States and told an interview with the Spanish-language TV network Telemundo, broadcast that the US would work with other nations to “further isolate” North Korea.

The launch violates two United Nations Security Council resolutions and the US says it will scrap a plan to give food aid to North Korea.

What’s Wrong With Millionaires Paying The Same Rate You Pay?

President Obama once again called on Congress to pass the Buffett Rule – a policy initiative being pushed by Democrats that requires millionaires and billionaires to pay “their fair share” in taxes. The president admitted that although millionaires and billionaires paying more in taxes will not solve the budget crisis, he said the extra revenue would help reduce the federal debt and pay for government investments in programs like education.

“One in four millionaires pays a lower tax rate than millions of hardworking middle-class households,” the president said. “It’s just plain wrong that middle-class Americans pay a higher share of their income in taxes than some millionaires and billionaires.”

The Senate will vote on the Buffet Rule next week.

Chuck Grassley Calls The President “Stupid,” And He’s Not Talking about George Bush

Senator Chuck Grassley took to the Twitter machine yesterday and called the President of the United States, “stupid.” Mr. Grassley – the Republican Senator from Iowa – is just one of a long and growing list of elected officials who take pleasure in disrespecting the Office of the Presidency… well, maybe just the office of this particular presidency.

Here is the interpretation of the Grassley tweet below (for those who are not a 16 years old).

Constituents asked why I am not outraged at President Obama’s attack on the Supreme Court independence. Because American people are not stupid as this ex-professor of Constitution Law.

A Message From President Obama on this Easter Weekend

Identifying himself and his Christian faith, President Obama used this occasion to remind Americans that Easter is a time to be thankful and to rejoice for the “tremendous sacrifice Jesus made for all of us.”

For me, and for countless other Christians, Easter weekend is a time to reflect and rejoice.  Yesterday, many of us took a few quiet moments to try and fathom the tremendous sacrifice Jesus made for all of us.
Tomorrow, we will celebrate the resurrection of a savior who died so that we might live.

And throughout these sacred days, we recommit ourselves to following His example.  We rededicate our time on Earth to selflessness, and to loving our neighbors.  We remind ourselves that no matter who we are, or how much we achieve, we each stand humbled before an almighty God.

Christ’s triumph over death holds special meaning for Christians.  But all of us, no matter how or whether we believe, can identify with elements of His story.  The triumph of hope over despair.  Of faith over doubt.
The notion that there is something out there that is bigger than ourselves.

These beliefs help unite Americans of all faiths and backgrounds.  They shape our values and guide our work.  They put our lives in perspective.

So to all Christians celebrating the Resurrection with us, Michelle and I want to wish you a blessed and Happy Easter.  And to all Americans, I hope you have a weekend filled with joy and reflection, focused on the things that matter most.  God bless you, and may God bless the United States of America.

President Obama’s Message to Women – I’m Your Guy!

President Obama spoke to a group of women today at the White House and his message was clear – if you want a president who will fight for women’s rights, then he’s your man. Looking for someone who will erase all the gains women have made and return the nation to the 1900’s then vote for the other guy.

Though he never mentioned Romney – or the word Republican – in his 20-minute speech, Obama cautioned an auditorium of female entrepreneurs, academics and business leaders against returning “to the policies that got us into so many of the problems that we’ve been dealing with in the first place. That’s what’s at stake.”

“When it comes to our efforts on behalf of women and girls, I’m proud of the accomplishments that we can point to,” he said. He cited the first bill he signed into law, making it easier for women to demand equal pay, along with efforts to boost the number of girls taking science and math classes. “We’ve got a lot more to do. But there’s no doubt we’ve made progress.”

Citing his signature health care law – which Republicans and Romney have vowed to repeal – Obama charged that “they’re not just saying we should stop protecting women with pre-existing conditions. They’re also saying we should kick about a million young women off their parents’ health care plans.”

He also took issue with GOP support for cutting government funding of Planned Parenthood, saying: “They’re not just talking about restricting a woman’s ability to make her own health decision. They’re talking about denying, as a practical matter, the preventive care like mammograms that millions of women rely on.”

Romney Criticizes Obama’s Harvard Connections, Although His are More Extensive

Mitt Romney again bashed President Obama for his connections to Harvard on Thursday, despite holding multiple degrees from the university himself and relying heavily on Harvard advisers as part of his presidential campaign.

Speaking in Harrisburg, Pa., Romney told an audience that Obama may have spent “too much time at Harvard,” according to NBC. Obama, who has a law degree from Harvard, spent three years there. Romney, who earned both a Harvard law degree and business degree, spent four years at the university and was by all accounts a motivated student who was happy with the institution during his time there.

Despite frequently mocking Obama for taking advice from the “Harvard faculty lounge” and spending too much time at the university, Romney has shown little indication that he regrets his own experience.

Three of his sons attended Harvard and he has donated over $50,000 to the university. His campaign lists over a dozen advisers with Harvard ties, including Harvard economics professor Greg Mankiw and international affairs professor Meghan O’Sullivan.

This is Too Easy – President Obama Points Out The Romney Lies – Ad

Now that the President is officially in campaign mode with Mitt Romney being the obvious choice for the Republican nomination, the Obama presidential campaign put out this simple ad focusing on some of the things Romney have said during the campaign, and then showing where Romney is blatantly lying to the American people.

Like taking candy from a kid… not that we take candy from kids… well, your kids shouldn’t be dining on candies anyway… unless they’re Sarah Palin’s…

President Obama Signs Bill to Stop Insider Trading in Congress

It’s called The STOCK Act and today, by putting his signature to it, President Obama officially put an end to what members of Congress have got away with for a very long time – insider trading. That is, using information not available to the average investor and profiting from that information through their investments.

The measure was the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act, better known was the STOCK Act. A long-lingering piece of legislation, it shot to the top of the priority list after a “60 Minutes” investigation highlighted instances of what the program called congressional “insider trading” — lawmakers using information gleaned on the job, “non-public information,” for personal profit.

The STOCK Act affirms that lawmakers and staff are not exempt from federal insider-trading laws and gives the House and Senate ethics committees the authority to enforce new rules. It also requires lawmakers to disclose more information about their stock trades.

President Obama – Republicans Plan for America is “Social Darwinism”

WASHINGTON (AP) — In combative campaign form, President Barack Obama accused Republican leaders on Tuesday of becoming so radical and dangerously rigid that even the late Ronald Reagan, one of their most cherished heroes, could not win a GOP primary if he were running today.

Obama, in a stinging speech to an audience of news executives, had unsparing words for Republicans on Capitol Hill as well as the man he is most likely to face off against in November, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. The president depicted the election as a choice between a Democratic candidate who wants to use government to help people succeed and Republicans who would abandon a basic compact with society and let most people struggle at the expense of the rich.

He framed his address around a new House Republican budget plan, saying it represents a bleak, backward “radical vision.”

“It is thinly veiled social Darwinism,” Obama said to the annual meeting of The Associated Press. “It is antithetical to our entire history as a land of opportunity and upward mobility for everybody who’s willing to work for it … It is a prescription for decline.”

Republicans shot back that the president had offered a deeply partisan speech devoid of accountability.

What Do Wisconsin, Maryland and DC Have in Common?

They are examples of places where Mitt Romney will win primaries, but will lose to President Obama in the fall.

For people who follow politics, there’s a certain heaviness to the Republican race for delegates. Most prominent Republicans, including such conservatives as Marco Rubio, have endorsed Romney, and the trading markets are assuming that he’ll win the nomination. Is this news? No. But we have to write something every few hours, so why not make it interesting?

Even Mitt has turned his attention to Obama and is basically ignoring Santorum. Newt’s so far out of it that the press isn’t even making a big deal out of the fact that he hasn’t made a formal announcement. It’s very tidy. Just like the GOP wanted it in the first place.

But once again, some of the biggest states will have little influence on the contest. The story might have been different if California, New York, Texas, New Jersey and Pennsylvania had voted much earlier in the process. As it is, they’re afterthoughts. Too bad for the runners-up.

After tomorrow, all eyes will be on the two man race most of us envisioned months ago. Mitt will try to reinvent himself into a likeable everyman and President Obama will continue the Passion Offensive he launched last September. Their success will largely determine which one of them wins in November.
