A Near Hit – Massive Asteroid Goes By Earth Tonight

An asteroid with an estimated diameter of three football fields is expected to zoom by Earth late Monday, missing our home by about that distance.

It’ll travel at some 27,000 miles per hour and make its closest approach starting at 9 p.m. ET.

Folks can watch the flyby on Slooh.com, which tracks potentially hazardous objects.

The asteroid comes just about a year after a relatively small asteroid blew up over Russia. The roughly 60-foot space rock plunged into Earth’s atmosphere and exploded over the city of Chelyabinsk with the force of about 30 early nuclear bombs.

The blast left more than 1,500 injured, mostly by glass from shattered windows, and raised concerns about humanity’s vulnerability to stray asteroids.

“On a practical level, a previously unknown, undiscovered asteroid seems to hit our planet and cause damage or injury once a century or so, as we witnessed on June 20, 1908, and February 15, 2013,” said Bob Berman, Slooh host and astronomer.

He added: “Every few centuries, an even more massive asteroid strikes us — fortunately usually impacting in an ocean or wasteland such as Antarctica.

“But the ongoing threat, and the fact that biosphere-altering events remain a real if small annual possibility, suggests that discovering and tracking all NEOs (near-Earth objects), as well as setting up contingency plans for deflecting them on short notice should the need arise, would be a wise use of resources

How to Get Along With an Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

Aquarians are extremely intelligent and interesting people to be around. They challenge the status quo, show you new ways of looking at the world and really force you to question yourself and everything around you. However, they can rub some people the wrong way. Understand how an Aquarius works so you can appreciate these individuals to the fullest.

Engage in some intellectual rapport with your Aquarius friend or acquaintance. There’s nothing that an Aquarius appreciates more than mental stimulation. Talk about politics, philosophy, psychology and science to really get her gears turning.

Avoid letting yourself take anything personally in any kind of debate that may naturally occur between you and an Aquarius. It is Aquarius’ nature to grow extremely opinionated and contrary while debating, and he may even take the exact opposite position on a topic to simply force you to see the other side. They are constantly questioning ideas, and while they may be very dogmatic about a concept one day, they might not be the next. Do not let this get to you. If you are bothered by having your ideals coming into question, decline to participate in debate.

Expect an Aquarius to be unpredictable. She may be gregarious, personable and extroverted one day and be quiet and thoughtful the next. She is also given to wild experimentation in her way of doing things. Do not be disturbed by this, it simply comes along with the type of person who is constantly questing for some kind of truth.

Grow a bit of a thicker shell if you’re the sensitive type, because Aquarius tends to “call it like he sees it.” This can be viewed as overly assertive and tactless by some, but Aquarius is just trying to cut past the fluff so that he can get to the center of the matter. If an Aquarius touches on your insecurities or hypocrisies (big or small), it’s better to listen to what he has to say than get angry at him because it is more productive.

Understand that Aquarius can be a very unemotional and detached sign. When growing to be closer and closer friends, you may intuitively start expecting a more sensitive side to emerge that you can open up to. Don’t be disappointed if this does not happen. You can still pour your heart out to an Aquarius and explain every overpowering emotional experience you’ve ever undergone, and she will listen with her undivided attention. It is simply that she processes these things more like a scientist fascinated by how you work, than a sympathizing ear. This does not mean she doesn’t love you or care about you–it’s just the way she is.

Tips & Warnings
As long as you don’t come off as close-minded or emotionally clingy, you have a great shot at making a friendship with an Aquarius work.

How to Get Along With a Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

Capricorns can have a dark frame of mind that sometimes gets stuck on achieving goals. So what is it that is so intriguing about them? While befriending a Capricorn isn’t the easiest thing in the world to do, her witty, sarcastic humor is usually enough to keep people coming back for more of her company. Here are some ways to avoid rocky Capricorn’s rougher edges.

Approach a Capricorn with a certain amount of caution, and chances are he’ll trust you more. Be slower to open up and he will be comfortable doing the same with you at his own natural speed. Don’t spill all your most intimate secrets the first week you hang out. These folks are slow and steady and not interested in taking anything too fast.

Enjoy some fine dining and wining with your Capricorn friend. Capricorn is the sign of high rank and status, so they love indulging in the finer aspects of life when they can afford to.

Recognize that from time to time, your Capricorn friend might have a tendency to be melancholy or pessimistic. Her sometimes negative frames of mind can be shifted if you are clever enough and can employ some witty humor. Throw in some jokes about how things could be worse, or even how they couldn’t be worse. If you’re witty enough, it might be enough to bring a Capricorn out of her bad mood.

Understand that Capricorn can get stubbornly attached to her goals and become a workaholic. Being a friend of a Capricorn can take skill, because you need to be able to understand when to leave her alone, and when to put in the effort to pull her away from work and show her a little fun.

Demand as much from your Capricorn friend as he does of you. Capricorns can become overbearing and difficult to deal with sometimes; however they are willing to do their part and own up to your requests as a result of it. Frank, straightforward conversation is the best way to deal with making sure you both remain happy in your friendship.
