Thought you knew everything there was to know about The Walking Dead? Think again…

I’ve been a fan of The Walking Dead since the very first episode of season one. The long abandoned country road with a sheriff car slowly approaching the intersection to find overturned and abandon vehicles captured my curiosity. It was the first five minutes of the first episode and I wanted to know what happened. Why were all these cars here? What happened to their drivers.
The driver of the sheriff car pulled up and removed a gasoline container from the truck. He maneuvered his way between the cars towards a gas station where he was met with a “no gas” sign. He started walking back to his patrol car when he heard a sound. Someone was Walking.
The sheriff, a man named Rick, dropped to his stomach and looked under one of the cars in the direction where the sound was coming from. On the other side of the car, he saw the walker’s dirty, bloodied feet just strolling along.
Rick sprang to his feet, happy to see what he thought was another human being. He harried to the back of the car. Slowly, walking away from him was a little girl. He called out to her. She stopped, slowly turning around to reveal her hideous, zombified appearance.
She began walking back towards Rick who was still in shock by her appearance. He was confused. He did not know what was happening or what was about to happen. He drew his gun and as the zombie got closer to him, Rick shot her in the head.
That was the first five minutes of the show. I was hooked.
Show after show, season after season, the writers and makeup artists pushed the envelope, doing things I personally had never seen before. There was an episode where Rick and the survivors we’re trapped in a building. They were surrounded by zombies and needed to get out. They came up with a clever plan of mutilating two of the zombies, removing their intestines and covering themselves in zombie blood and guts. The idea was to look and smell like the dead. It worked and they were able to walk out of the building surrounded by The Walking Dead.
But the writers and makeup artists had more surprises up their sleeves and in the season 4 finale, they outdid themselves.
It was the night scene. Rick and Michonne were sitting, talking. Carl was sleeping in an abandoned car nearby. Out of nowhere guns with drawn and pointed to Rick, Michonne and Carl. It seemed as if the end was near for our beloved stars. They were surrounded. There was no where to run. Things were looking bleak.
Then one of the gunners took a liking to Carl – Rick’s son – and began trying to have his way with the kid.
Yes, that was shocking indeed. These men were ruthless, but what was about to happen to Carl was something no one expected to see on television. Rick couldn’t sit by and allow what was about to happen, to haopen. A struggle ensued and Rick was standing facing one of the attackers. The man was mouthing off to Rick, Carl struggling in the background and Rick had to save his son.
He had no choice. As he stood facing the man with the gun, Rick lunged for the man’s jugular, biting deep into the man’s throat, withdrawing with a mouthful of veins and blood. He then gutted the sicko who was trying to attack Carl.
It was the craziest, most shocking thing I ever saw!
I can’t wait for season 5!
After weeks of waiting, The Walking Dead mid-season premiere is set for tonight at 9 p.m. eastern/pacific on AMC.
Let’s refresh ourselves on what happened last time.
Given the amount of time that’s passed since the mid-season finale in December, you may need a refresh on what happened in The Walking Dead season 4, episode 9.
1) Hershel and The Governor have died. In a shoot out at the prison, The Governor kills Hershel, and Michonne kills The Governor (a.k.a. Brian) moments later.
2) Speaking of the prison… bye, prison! The gun fire battle also sent the prison up in flames, so now Rick and company are in need of a new place to call home. Rumors indicate that by the end of season 4, they’ll have a new place.
3) All of the survivors are out on their own. Numerous promos (viewable below) show that each of the good humans are on the run by themselves. Some of them are in very small groups of two – maybe three – but the mid-season premiere will show how they all cope without being in a bigger group setting.
4) Baby Judith may or may not be dead. Rick and Carl believe she’s been killed, but viewers think someone like Beth may’ve picked her up. If so, we can’t wait to see the reunion between the father, son, and daughter. Hypable readers have speculated wildly about whether or not she’s alive.
It’s flu season on The Walking Dead! And boy is it a doozy. That’s what killed the nerdy young Patrick last week, a death that immediately sparks a rather gruesome massacre in Cell Block D. This particular strain of flu apparently makes your face explode, and can be fatal within 24 hours even for young and healthy people — which would be dangerous enough on its own even if it didn’t immediately turn their corpses into dangerous killing machines. When you consider that the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic managed to infect a third of the global population and kill an estimated 50 million people, it’s not looking great for our survivors.
And as the extinction of humanity looms even larger than before, it’s no surprise that their primary concern seems to be children — both protecting them and protecting their innocence, goals that ultimately prove to be incompatible.
“Why don’t you wear your hat anymore?” Michonne asks as Carl, shortly before hearing the gunshots. “It’s not a farming hat,” Carl replies, because he and Rick are farming farmers who farm now, in case you missed the many, many mentions of their farming over the last two episodes. Accordingly, they don’t wear cowboy hats anymore, nor do they carry guns, all because of an incident where Carl maaaaybe gunned down a (possibly dangerous) stranger in cold blood. Concerned that his son might be taking a one-way trip to Psychotown, Rick is now obsessed with trying to give Carl back his childhood, which in Rick’s mind means 1) farming (obviously) 2) refusing to let Carl take part in any zombie-related duties and 3) insisting he read comic books and go to storytime with the little kids.
Which isn’t entirely fair, and you can see how badly playing the role chafes for Carl. Like many of the survivors, he had to become a very different person in order to stay alive, and he hasn’t really been a child for a long time. But he’s trying with all his heart to act like one anyway because Rick wants him to, because he can tell that his father needs it far more than he does. Rick doesn’t want Carl to carry a gun because he wants to believe that Carl doesn’t need to carry a gun. And of course, that’s not true.
Unless you have been living under a rock for the past year, you’ve most likely heard of The Walking Dead, AMC’s zombie drama success, but the question is….
Have you been watching it??
Last night was Season’s 3 Season Finale and as usual after an hour of watching a Walking Dead episode, I am emotionally spent.
The Walking Dead is about, yes it’s true, zombies.
However, it’s a lot more than that. It really digs deep into the complex social, emotional, and physical relationships that develop once a sort of apocalypse world occurs. I had no interest in watching this show when it first began for the simple fact that it’s about Walkers (another name for zombies) and I just didn’t see the appeal. Yet, someone insisted I watch the show, so I gave the Pilot episode a chance and boy, did it deliver. One episode and I was hooked for life.
The actors on the show are top-notch and they make it easy to get caught up in this zombie flesh-eating world. Andrew Lincoln leads the cast as Rick while he successfully, and sometimes not, leads his group through survival in the new world. Unfortunately, not all of them have/will survive.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the show is that nothing and no one (including their life) is guaranteed. I have shed quite a few tears over the loss of some of my beloved characters, so please brace yourself for that.
The show also does an excellent job of addressing the ever-changing morality issue. In this new world, it’s either kill or be killed because either you kill or you die, or worse, you die and you kill.
So, how far will they go to survive? The show does a beautiful job of exploring this question and more.
We see people like Rick, our fearless leader, go through the emotional and mental struggles of remaining sane in a most illogical world and his fight to keep abreast in order to lead his new family to some sort of normalcy.
We also see that human conflict continues to exist as Rick’s group goes up against The Governor (our little anti-hero who took too many dips into the crazy pool) and his lovely people at Woodbury.
And no zombie show would be complete without some kick-ass mesmerizing Walker battle encounters with Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) leading the fray.
So, if you are one of the few who is still trying to decide if you should follow the masses and get caught up in this zombie-apocalypse creation, then the good news is that Season 4 doesn’t begin until October.
That gives you plenty of time to give this show a try and see what you’ve been missing!
Let’s get real: Every character on The Walking Dead is up a zombie creek without a paddle to bash the undead’s heads in.
That being said, a new Season 3 trailer is here! And, predictably, things are looking grim. There’s creepy backwoods music, a prison surrounded by zombies, and some spooky-sexy eye patches.
On the plus side, looks like Andrea might try to take out the governor! While naked! For whatever reason! Yay!
