Police Dogs in Los Angeles Accused of Racism

Police officers in Los Angeles have long faced accusations of institutional racism, but now it appears their dogs may be unjustly discriminatory, too.

A new report focusing on the Canine Special Detail of the LA Sherriff’s Department (LASD) has uncovered a vast increase in the number of minority individuals bitten by police dogs since 2004.

And in the first six months of this year, every single victim of a bite by a LASD dog was African-American or Latino. The data was published in a new report by the Police Assessment Resource Centre (Parc), a Los Angeles-based non-profit organisation, devoted to “advancing effective and accountable policing”.

According to Parc records, the number of Latino individuals bitten by LASD canines went up 30 per cent between 2004 and 2012, from 30 to 39 bites. The number of African-Americans bitten increased by 33 per cent over the same period.

Meanwhile, police dog bites caused injuries at a much higher rate than alternative deterrents such as batons, tear gas and even guns. “Large swathes of LASD’s jurisdiction, encompassing generally affluent areas with smaller minority populations, had few [canine] deployments or bites,” the Parc report states.

“Crime rates are lower in these areas, but the stark disparity leads us to wonder why canine deployments seem to occur disproportionately in less affluent areas with larger minority populations.” During the period covered in the report, the largely black or Latino areas of Century, City of Industry, Compton, Lakewood and South LA/Lennox suffered more dog bites than all of LASD’s other 21 districts combined.

Ted Cruz Wishes More Republican Racists Were In Congress

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) praised a former conservative senator best known for his opposition to African American civil rights and gay people on Wednesday, suggesting that the nation would be better off if Congress were still filled with lawmakers who shared his beliefs and positions.

“It’s every bit as true now as it was then,” Cruz said at a fundraiser hosted at the Heritage Foundation. “We need 100 more like Jesse Helms in the U.S. Senate.”

Helms, the longest serving senator from North Carolina, is renowned for speaking out against civil rights, voting rights, gay rights, and abortion — causes that Cruz himself has embraced in his short senate tenure.

The late Helms, who died in 2008, famously led a 16-day filibuster to prevent the Senate from approving the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday, described the Civil Rights Act as “the single most dangerous piece of legislation ever introduced in the Congress,” organized against the renewal of the Voting Rights Act, and opposed any “federal financing of AIDS research and treatment,” arguing that “There is not one single case of AIDS in this country that cannot be traced in origin to sodomy.” “Homosexuals are weak, morally sick wretches,” Helms was once quoted as saying and he sought to block a nominee “because she’s a damn lesbian.”

Cruz is less inflammatory, but remains committed to Helms’ causes.

Black Racist Attack in New York Leaves White Man Dead

Jeffrey Babbitt

A man has died after being knocked to the ground with a single punch by a stranger in a New York City square.

Jeffrey Babbitt, 62, had been left brain damaged after being punched in Union Square last week in an apparent racist attack.

Mr Babbitt died after allegedly being hit by Lashawn Marten, a 31-year-old African American, who reportedly said that he wanted to attack the next white person who walked by.

The 62-year-old, the sole carer of his 92-year-old mother Hedda, was hit so hard that he fell to the ground but later managed to stand. His condition deteriorated soon afterwards and he died at Bellevue Hospital.

Marten, who has a previous criminal record and uses various aliases, was charged with assault and is due in a Manhattan court on Tuesday. It is likely his charges will now be upgraded.

According to one female witness last week, Marten said: ‘The next white person who walks by I’m going to f***’.

She added: ‘His fist went in and the man’s head bobbed and he hit the ground and you could hear his skull hitting the ground.’

After his racist rant and attack, witnesses said Marten stayed at the park and waited for police to arrive.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Marten’s alleged comments about targeting white people before allegedly punching Mr Babbitt could lead to hate crime charges being made against him.

‘Our Hate Crimes Task Force is involved in aspects of that case,’ he added.

Marten is being held on a $1 million bond as police decide whether to also charge him with a hate crime.

Black Woman Awarded $280,000 Because Her Boss Used the ‘N’ Word

(AP) — The lawyer for a black U.S. woman whose claim against a black boss’s N-word rant brought a $280,000 jury award says she hopes the case teaches society something.

“It’s the most offensive word in the English language,” attorney Marjorie M. Sharpe said Tuesday.

A jury sided with 38-year-old Brandi Johnson against the boss, Rob Carmona, in a case that explored a word that is a degrading slur when spoken by whites but at times is used affectionately among blacks, even in the workplace.

Johnson said she hopes the word now “won’t be tolerated no matter what your race is.”

Carmona, a 61-year-old black man of Puerto Rican descent, had testified that he was dispensing tough love. “I come from a different time,” he said in court Tuesday.

He had tried to defend his use of the word, saying it had “multiple contexts” in the black and Latino communities, sometimes indicating anger, sometimes love.

Johnson had recorded his March 2012 tirade about inappropriate workplace attire and unprofessional behavior, and it was played for the jury.

She said she cried for 45 minutes in the restroom afterward.

“I was offended. I was hurt. I felt degraded. I felt disrespected. I was embarrassed,” Johnson testified.

In a statement, the organization Carmona founded, STRIVE East Harlem, said it was disappointed but was exploring options, including an appeal.

Former President of the Clowns Association: Rodeo Incident a “Sad Day” for Clowns

Judy Quest, past president of Clowns of America International: It was a sad day in the clown world when a “clown” at the Missouri State Fair put on a mask in the likeness of President Barack Obama and wore a broomstick attached to his behind to perform in a rodeo in America’s Heartland. …

As someone who has performed as a “real” clown for 32 years and has taught the craft to hundreds of clowns, I would like the world to know that we have a code of ethics that we adhere to so that our life of making the world smile goes on without hurting people. …

What of the children who were in the audience and being taught to respect our president and government? What of every person in the audience who hates racism?

Oprah Winfrey Apologies For Media Uproar

In an interview with the Associated Press, Miss. Winfrey explained that her intentions were not to cause a media feed fest when she mentioned what happened to her in Switzerland.

“I think that incident in Switzerland was just an incident in Switzerland. I’m really sorry that it got blown up. I purposefully did not mention the name of the store. I’m sorry that I said it was Switzerland. I was just referencing it as an example of being in a place where people don’t expect that you would be able to be there.”

The incident became international when Oprah suggested that it was racism that caused a store clerk in Switzerland to deny her seeing a handbag of her choice because it was too expensive.

She told Entertainment Tonight:  “I was in Zurich the other day, at a store whose name I will not mention. I didn’t have my eyelashes on, but I was in full Oprah Winfrey gear. I had my little Donna Karan skirt and my little sandals on. But obviously ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ is not shown in Zurich.”

Oprah’s apology comes after the sales clerk accused her of lying. In a recent interview, the clerk emphatically denied being a racist and said she was shocked that Oprah made such a claim.

“It is absolutely not true that I declined to show her the bag on racist grounds. I even asked her if she wanted to look at the bag,” she said.

This has the makings of a lawsuit. Its the natural progression.

Judge Throws Out Racial Discrimination Suit against Paula Deen

A federal judge has dismissed the racial discrimination claims in a lawsuit filed by a former employee against Paula Deen, the celebrity chef’s representative said Monday.

The former employee can’t claim to be a victim of racial discrimination targeting African-American workers because she is white, U.S. District Judge William T. Moore Jr. ruled. “At best, plaintiff is an accidental victim of the alleged racial discrimination,” Moore wrote.

Other aspects of the lawsuit, including sexual harassment and abusive treatment, are still pending.

“We are pleased with the Court’s ruling today that Lisa Jackson’s claims of race discrimination have been dismissed,” Deen’s representatives said in a statement to CNN. “As Ms. Deen has stated before, she is confident that those who truly know how she lives her life know that she believes in equal opportunity, kindness and fairness for everyone.”

In Today’s Case of Racism: Oprah Winfrey Finds Out She Is Black

If a billionaire like Oprah Winfrey cannot escape those who judge her based on the color of her skin, people we affectionately call racists, what chance do you have if you’re just a member of the common folk group?

Oprah Winfrey must not be a household name in Switzerland because a store clerk at an expensive Zurich boutique didn’t know that American media mogul was a billionaire.

During a recent trip to northern Switzerland for Tina Turner’s wedding, Oprah said a saleswoman at Trois Pommes refused to show her a $38,000 handbag because it was “too expensive.”

“She said: `No, no, no, you don’t want to see that one. You want to see this one. Because that one will cost too much; you will not be able to afford that,’” Winfrey said in an interview with “Entertainment Tonight.” “And I said, `Well, I did really want to see that one.’ And she refused to get it.”

“I didn’t have my eyelashes on, but I was in full Oprah Winfrey gear. I had my little Donna Karan skirt and my little sandals. But obviously ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ is not shown in Zurich,” she added

She went on to say the sales assistant suggested she look at cheaper bags.

“There’s two different ways to handle it. I could’ve had the whole blow-up thing,” she said, but “I left the store but it proves that racism is still an issue.”

Just hours after “Entertainment Tonight” aired the interview, Swiss tourism officials and boutique owner Trudie Goetz offered their apologies to Ms. Winfrey.

“We are very sorry for what happened to her, of course, because we think all of our guests and clients should be treated respectfully, in a professional way,” said Swiss tourism spokeswoman Daniela Baer.

Goetz insisted that the whole incident was a misunderstanding.

“I’m very sorry about this incident,” she said during a radio interview. “This can only happen because of a communication problem and a misunderstanding.”

“The shop assistant apparently asked her (Oprah) if she would like to see the bag, but she apparently said `No, I just want to look’. And then she (Oprah) asked how much the bag costs and she (the employee) told her how much the bag was,” she explained. “I believe she rather said something like `we have some less expensive’ – `we also have some less expensive bags’ and not `it’s too expensive for you.’”

It’s Not about Race? They Sang “Bye Bye Black Sheep” to Protest President Obama

People protest against presidents all the time, but never in the history of this country has anyone felt the need to sing “bye bye black sheep” at a protest… until now, for this particular president.

But rest assured that these same barnyard vocalists would insist that the color of the president’s skin had nothing to do with their musical selection.

A raucous crowd of supporters and protesters from both ends of the political spectrum showed up outside President Barack Obama’s appearance in Phoenix, Ariz. on Tuesday, with some of his detractors turning to racially charged attacks to express their opposition.

From the Arizona Republic:

Obama foes at one point sang, “Bye Bye Black Sheep,” a derogatory reference to the president’s skin color, while protesters like Deanne Bartram raised a sign saying, “Impeach the Half-White Muslim!”

The Republic reported that hundreds of people gathered outside Desert Vista High School as Obama unveiled a plan to overhaul the nation’s mortgage finance system. Some protesters came from Obama’s left, urging him to reject the Keystone XL oil pipeline and take other actions on climate change. But a prevailing theme among many in the protest appeared to be issues of race. Some even suggested that Obama himself was to blame for racial tensions.

“We have gone back so many years,” Judy Burris told the Republic, arguing Obama had taken the nation back to pre-Civil Rights era levels of racism. “He’s divided all the races. I hate him for that.”

The irony.

They’re Throwing Bananas at Italy’s First Black Minister

An act so vile and reprehensible, you’d think someone from today’s Republican party did it.

Italy’s first black minister who was dubbed an orangutan by a fellow politician has suffered another racist attack — after a spectator threw bananas at her during a rally.

Cecile Kyenge, who was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was pelted with the fruit as she was making a speech at an assembly in Cervia on Friday.

The Integration minister, charged with making it easier for immigrants to gain Italian citizenship, shrugged off the incident.

“It is sad and a waste of food, considering the economic crisis,” she later wrote on Twitter.

“The courage and optimism to change things has to come above all from the bottom up to reach the institutions,” she added.

It is not known who threw the fruit but police are now stepping up security when she appears in public, reports CNN.

Philadelphia Eagles’ Riley Cooper a Racist?

(AP) – Saying he was “ashamed and disgusted” with himself, Eagles wide receiver Riley Cooper apologized repeatedly for making a racial slur at a Kenny Chesney concert that was caught on video and led to him getting fined.

The video of Cooper using the N-word surfaced Wednesday on the Internet. Cooper issued a statement of apology then met with reporters outside the team’s practice facility.

“This is the lowest of lows,” Cooper said. “This is not the type of person I want to be portrayed as. This isn’t the type of person I am. I’m extremely sorry.”

Cooper said he was drinking when he directed the slur at an African-American security guard at the concert in June.

“That’s no excuse for what I said. I don’t use that term,” he said. “I was raised better than that. I have a great mom and dad and they’re disgusted with my actions.”

Cooper said he was fined a significant amount of money by the Eagles.

“We are shocked and appalled by Riley Cooper’s words,” Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said. “This sort of behavior or attitude from anyone has no role in a civil society. He has accepted responsibility for his words and his actions. He has been fined for this incident.”

The league released the following statement: “The NFL stands for diversity and inclusion. Comments like this are wrong, offensive, and unacceptable.”
