The race takes place April 19, but today was a day of remembrance in Boston, a year after bombings at the finish line killed three and injured 264.

Police said the bags were left in the area of Boylston St. and Exeter St., and the road was closed. Both bags were exploded by Boston Police as a precaution.

Health Care Horror?

You’d think that people were dying because they signed up for health insurance. You’d think that people were going broke because they had to leave behind their old policies that didn’t cover needed expenses and treatments. You’d think that the opponents of the Affordable Care Act would come up with a specific, viable alternative that they could run on this November.

Oh, the horror. None of this is happening.

I will say for the final time that the website rollout was terrible and horrible, but it’s now time to move beyond that because over 7 million people now have health insurance and the numbers keep going up. Citizens living in the most prosperous country in the world will not have to worry about medical costs bankrupting them or forcing them to lose their houses or their livelihoods. People can now make decisions based on their own life choices, rather than having to stay at a dead-end job because of the benefits.

Oh, the horror?

The real horror is being perpetrated by the states that refuse to take free federal money to expand Medicaid and cover even more people. These states are led by governors and legislatures that are acting on ideology rather than common sense. They have convinced themselves that president Obama wishes to enslave their citizens through federal programs, making them dependent on the government for their happiness. It’s irrational and will eventually lead to defeat for the politicians that are erecting the legal roadblocks to health care.

The history of the United States has moved inexorably in one direction, and that’s towards equality, access and enhanced civil rights. The Affordable Care Act will survive and thrive because it enables citizens to live better lives. In the end, it is truly American.

30 Of The Most Powerful Images Ever

We should warn our readers that some of these pictures may upset them, while others may fill them with joy. But that’s precisely because these images reflect some of the best and worst parts of the human experience and world events. Our post of must-see photos from the past described our history while these photos, for the most part, describe our present – our suffering and our triumphs, our perseverance and our failures, our compassion and our hatred, our intelligence and our stupidity.

Some of these photographs may mean more to some of our readers than to others. But hopefully, they will remind us all that the world can always use a little bit more love, tolerance, compassion and understanding.

P.S: we always try our best to credit each and every photographer, but sometimes it’s impossible to track some of them. Please leave a comment if you know the missing authors.

Body Found May Be Missing Doctor Teleka Patrick

A private investigator hired by the family to aid in the search for missing doctor believes that the body found is Patrick.

Teleka Patrick

Abody discovered early Sunday morning by a man fishing in a lake in Indiana is believed to be the body of missing Kalamazoo doctor Teleka Patrick, MLive.comreports.

While police have yet to officially identify the body, Jim Carlin, a private investigator hired by the family to aid in the search for missing doctor believes that the body found is Patrick.

“That’s my position,” Carlin told the news site in relation to the identity of the body. “Obviously the family wants to have it confirmed with the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office.”

Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release confirming that a body had been found in the lake that was searched as recently as April 1 without finding any clues. The release also stated that the identity of the body had not been confirmed at that the Kalamazoo County Sherriff’s Office would have no further comment at this time, MLive reports.

Police had searched Lake Charles in January almost a month after the doctor first went missing but the lake was frozen over and that search did not reveal anything related to Patrick’s case.

Around 7:10 a.m. Sunday, a man fishing in the lake called the police saying he saw something floating in the water at Lake Charles.

Patrick was last seen the evening of Dec. 5, 2013 in the parking lot of Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Her car was found later that night and The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department believes that she was headed to Chicago to visit a relative.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Patrick’s ex-husband believes she suffers from mental illness, most notably delusions and paranoia. In September, it was revealed that well-known gospel singer Marvin Sapp had filed a personal protection order against Patrick.

A statement on the Find Teleka Facebook page, updated by her family reads: “Our family was informed that a body was found that may be our daughter Teleka Patrick. We are waiting for official confirmation… and have no comment at this time.”

Illegally Parked BMW’s Windows Smashed By Boston Firefighters

THE REASON YOU DON’T PARK BY A FIRE HYDRANT-

EAST BOSTON (CBS) – A man who ignored a fire hydrant put Boston firefighters at risk Wednesday night. The man who parked his new BMW in front of a fire hydrant slowed the battle to save East Boston homes.

Firefighters were forced to smash the windows and thread the fire hose through the car.

The fire on Lexington Street grew to eight alarmsbefore crews were able to get control. No one was hurt, but nearly three dozen people have to find a new place to live.

The man had just bought the BMW and theregistration was just two days old. He also got a $100 fine.

“He was mad,” Rafael Henriquez said.

Henriquez is friends with the car’s owner. He watched as firefighters busted through the windows to hook their hose onto the hydrant.

“I wanted to cry for him,” Henriquez said. “Of course he brought that on himself.”

In fact, Boston firefighters say the only thing on their minds was getting water as quickly as possible to the burning homes which were at that point fully engulfed. Since it had gone to eight alarms, all the closer hydrants were taken. The one blocked by the BMW was a street away.

“You don’t want to lose the full force of the water you’re getting from the hydrant,” Steve MacDonald of Boston Fire said. “It’s important to be as straight as possible.”

Boston Firefighters ran a hose through this BMW that was parked in front of a hydrant on Lexington Street. (WBZ-TV)

The hose still had a kink even after they got it hooked up, so bystanders pitched in and helped firefighters lift and bounce the car away from the curb.

“You can move the car a short distance which is what they did to get the kink out,” MacDonald said. “Again this is all effort that should be concentrated on putting the fire out.”

Back at the scene, firefighters traced the source of the flames to the engine of a Toyota parked in an alley, spreading fire to three nearby buildings, leaving residents like Jaime Hernandez homeless.

“We’re trying to figure out where we’re going to stay and for now my friend offered me shelter at her house,” Hernandez said.

Residents say the owner of the BMW drove it away with two broken windows and a big dent on the side.

Teleka Patrick’s Body Possibly Found in Indiana Lake

The body of Teleka Patrick, a Kalamazoo physician who has been missing since last December, may have been found in a lake in northern Indiana.

Although authorities have yet to positively identify the body, her family confirmed to the local NBC affiliate that they believe it to be Patrick.

“Our family was informed that a body was found that may be our daughter Teleka Patrick. We are waiting for official confirmation from the Kalamazoo Sheriff’s Department and have no comment at this time. Possible Pinging Noise Detected in Search for Missing MH370

This could be the best news so far in the month long search for the missing Malaysia Airline. A Chinese vessel is reporting that it is picking up a sound deep in the Indian Ocean,  consistent with the ping of a black box.

“I have been advised that a series of sounds have been detected by a Chinese ship in the search area,” Angus Houston, the chief coordinator of Australia’s Joint Agency Coordination Centre, said in a prepared statement.

“The characteristics reported are consistent with the aircraft black box,” he said, adding that a number of white objects were sited about 56 miles (90 kilometers) away.

“However, there is no confirmation at this stage that the signals and the objects are related to the missing aircraft,” the retired air chief marshal said.

Neither the Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) nor the Australian Transport Safety Bureau can verify any connection to the missing aircraft, the statement said.

Video Of Man Being Arrested And Bullied In His Own Home Goes Viral

A video of police bullying at its finest has gone viral on Facebook. The video shows the victim’s, Donrell Breaux (pictured), home seemingly invaded by a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy who is seen trying to forcibly cuff him without following protocol.

Reportedly, Breaux and friend Eric Banegas were standing on Breaux’s porch just shooting the breeze joking and using profanity. A neighbor emerged from his home and asked the men to lower their voices and be mindful of their bad language. Breaux told The Times-Picayune that the neighbor was combative from the start, and when the men confronted the irate man, he summoned police.

“He threatens to call the police all the time about stuff in the backyard and stuff going on inside the house. Things like, there’s too many cars in the driveway,” Breaux told the news outlet.

When deputies arrived, they reportedly spoke with the unidentified neighbor, then according to the video, proceeded to forcibly enter Breaux’s home while refusing to answer the young man’s questions as to why he is being arrested. Breaux continuously refers to the officer, as “Sir,” even while the policeman wrestles the young man on the couch. The young man then continues to plead with the policeman, stating several times that he is scared and for the officer not to shoot him.

At the end of the video, another deputy is seen joining in the unnerving wrangle.

Watch the unsettling video here:

The incident reportedly took place on March 30th in River Ridge, La.  The encounter was recorded by Banegas who then posted the footage on Facebook two days after.

Breaux told the Times-Picayune that he has seen both of the arresting deputies before at the complaining neighbor’s house and he believes they are friends, stating, ”These are personal friends. I wish I had friends that I could call and have them handle personal vendettas that I have with my neighbors.”

Firefox CEO Steps Down After Anti-Gay Sentiments

Brendan Eich

The company responsible for the Firefox browser was recently thrown into the midst of a controversy when their CEO made some anti-gay statements.

OkCupid shed more light on the matter when they began blocking Firefox users from accessing their services and now, the CEO of Mozilla is stepping down.

Here is part of the statement from Mozilla’s blog.

Mozilla prides itself on being held to a different standard and, this past week, we didn’t live up to it. We know why people are hurt and angry, and they are right: it’s because we haven’t stayed true to ourselves.

We didn’t act like you’d expect Mozilla to act. We didn’t move fast enough to engage with people once the controversy started. We’re sorry. We must do better.

Brendan Eich has chosen to step down from his role as CEO. He’s made this decision for Mozilla and our community.
