(AP) — Eric Garner was a familiar figure on the streets near Staten Island’s ferry docks: to his friends, a congenial giant with a generous gesture or a calming word; to police, a persistent face of the small-time crime of selling loose, untaxed cigarettes.
Garner’s last run-in with police spiraled into a confrontation in which an officer applied an apparent chokehold, leaving the married father of six dead and police tactics under scrutiny. And it left some who knew him wondering why such conduct was used against a man they describe as a neighborhood peacemaker.
“That’s the ironic part about it. He’s the most gentle of everybody over there,” friend Irvine Johnson said.
Public anguish over Garner’s death kept building Monday, as a small group of demonstrators gathered outside City Hall to demand the police commissioner’s resignation. Medical examiners were working to pinpoint the cause of Garner’s death, prosecutors and police internal affairs detectives were investigating officers’ conduct in the encounter, and the Fire Department was probing paramedics’ and emergency medication technicians’ actions.
Garner, 43, whose friends called him “Big E” and “Teddy Bear,” had a son starting college, five other children and two grandchildren, and a quarter-century-long relationship with his wife, Esaw. He’d had had a couple of temporary jobs with the city Parks Department in recent years, most recently helping with horticulture crews and maintenance in 2013.
This is an unfortunate situation for the deceased, but a valuable lesson for the rest of us. Never put on a bulletproof vest and willfully make yourself a target. Soo much can go wrong.
A Maryland man was charged with first- and second-degree murder last week after he shot and killed a friend while the two were testing a bulletproof vest, according to the Baltimore Sun.
Early Wednesday morning, Darnell Mitchell, Mark Ramiro (pictured) and another friend decided to film themselves testing a bulletproof vest in the basement of a Westport, Md. home.
According to video tape reviewed by Baltimore police, Mitchell put on the vest, looked into the camera and said he was ready to take a “deuce deuce in the chest.”
Ramiro missed Mitchell’s vest and instead shot him with a .22 caliber handgun.
Ramiro and the third person rushed to help Mitchell, and drove him to the hospital. Mitchell was declared dead a few minutes after they got to the hospital, according to police.
Officers were then called to the hospital and obtained a warrant for the video tape that captured the incident, according to the Baltimore Sun.
A spokesman for the Maryland attorney, Mark Cheshire, told the Baltimore Sun that prosecutors originally sought a second-degree murder charge, and the court commissioner later added the first-degree charge.
A Florida police officer is accused of having sex with an underage girl he first met when she was 11 and he was assigned to her missing persons case.
Oldy Ochoa Jr., 48, a homicide detective who has been with the Miami Beach Police Department for 20 years, was charged with two counts of sexual battery Saturday for allegedly having sex with the girl in an unmarked police vehicle as he was taking her to her GED class, reports the Orlando Sentinel.
Ochoa first met the girl when he helped locate her six years ago when she had a missing persons case. While living with another family he petitioned the court to allow her to live with his family in December.
She stayed there for two months before running away, the newspaper reports.
The Pembroke Pines Police Department, which is investigating the case, could not make a copy of the arrest report available to the Daily News Sunday.
The victim told police Ochoa allegedly would hold her hand and kiss her while the two were sitting on a couch, the Sentinel reported.
The sexual assault occurred in an unmarked police car in February in an alley near the school where the girl was taking her GED classes, the newspaper reported. The pair also had sex in the car in a wooded area.
Ochoa is now at Broward County jail and his attorney told the newspaper he would not discuss the allegations.
The investigation was launched in March and Ochoa was relieved of his duties as an officer, the newspaper reported.
Miami Beach Police Chief Dan Oates issued a statement describing the situation as “a very sad day for our department” and they would take appropriate action regarding his employment when the criminal case concluded.
Now you know this was eventually going to happen. The United States President in will be blamed by Republicans for everything, no matter where in the world it happens or the circumstances under which it happens. Former Republican congressman from Florida Allen West, took to his website and cast blame squarely on the White House for the almost 300 people who lost their lives when someone shot down a Malaysia plane in Ukraine. In his post, West just about accused Obama of pulling the trigger that brought down the plane, saying the President is “purposefully creating drama globally” and he used the downed plane as an example.
Sadly, hundreds of Ukrainians and 298 souls on MH17 have paid the price for the weakness and abject cowardice of Obama’s “flexibility.”
And here in America we quibble over a lawsuit against this charlatan.

A Daytona Beach father beat an 18-year-old man unconscious after finding him sexually abusing his 11-year-old son early Friday morning, police said.
The father called 911 around 1 a.m. after he walked in on the alleged abuse, police said. When officers arrived, they found Raymond Frolander motionless on the living room floor. He had several knots on his face and was bleeding from the mouth.
“He is nice and knocked out on the floor for you,” the father told the 911 dispatcher. “I drug him out to the living room.”
The Daytona Beach News-Journal ( http://bit.ly/1tZV6o9 ) reports that the father — who was not identified by police — told investigators he walked in as Frolander was abusing the boy.
When asked by the 911 dispatcher if any weapons were involved, the father said “my foot and my fist.”
The father has not been charged with any crime.
“Dad was acting like a dad. I don’t see anything we should charge the dad with,” Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood said. “You have an 18-year-old who has clearly picked his target, groomed his target and had sex with the victim multiple times.”
Frolander is charged with sexual battery on a child under 12. He is being held without bail. It was not immediately known whether he’d hired a lawyer.
According to the arrest affidavit, Frolander admitted the abuse.
“Dad was acting like a dad. I don’t see anything we should charge the dad with,” Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood said. “You have an 18-year-old who has clearly picked his target, groomed his target and had sex with the victim multiple times.”
According to the boy, Frolander had been abusing him more than three years during alone time. The boy said he was afraid if he didn’t comply that he would get hurt.
Frolander allegedly admitted to the ongoing abuse saying, “I’m guilty,” WESH reported. Frolander allegedly told authorities he had been abused as a child.
Frolander is charged with sexual battery on a child under 12. He is being held without bail. It was not immediately known whether he’d hired a lawyer.

The father added: ‘He stood up and his pants were around his ankles and nothing else needed to be said. I did whatever I got a right to do except I didn’t kill him.’
The father had left his home around 1am to pick up some food and when he returned, heard a strange noise coming from the bedroom, police said.
He pushed open the door and allegedly found Frolander with his pants down performing a sex act on the child.
Frolander, 18, admitted to the abuse on the 11-year-old, according to his arrest affidavit. He is being held without bail on charges of sexual battery
The boy told investigators he had been playing video games with friends but when they left, Frolander took him to a back room and pulled down his pants. He also said Frolander had been abusing him for three years.
Daytona Beach police chief Michael Chitwood told MailOnline today that Frolander had a close family connection to the alleged victim.
The chief said the young boy was intimidated and told by Frolander that terrible things would happen if he revealed the abuse.
Chief Chitwood said: ‘He’s 11 years old, he should be running around outside and playing video games, not dealing with something like this.’
A 400-pound asthmatic Staten Island dad died Thursday after a cop put him in a chokehold and other officers appeared to slam his head against the sidewalk, video of the incident shows.
“I can’t breathe! I can’t breathe!” Eric Garner, 43, repeatedly screamed after at least five NYPD officers took him down in front of a Tompkinsville beauty supply store when he balked at being handcuffed.
Within moments Garner, a married father of six children with two grandchildren, stopped struggling and appeared to be unconscious as police called paramedics to the scene. An angry crowd gathered, some recording with smartphones.
“When I kissed my husband this morning, I never thought it would be for the last time,” Garner’s wife, Esaw, told the Daily News.
She got no details from police until after she had gone to the hospital to identify his body, she said.
Officials confirmed that NYPD Internal Affairs officers launched an investigation Thursday night.
Records show Garner was due in court in October on three Staten Island cases, including charges of pot possession and possession or selling untaxed cigarettes.
Esaw Garner said her husband was unable to work because he suffered from a host of ailments, including chronic asthma, diabetes and sleep apnea.
The Staten Island resident was sitting in front of Bay Beauty on Bay St. and Victory Blvd. just before 5 p.m. when two plainclothes cops began questioning him about selling untaxed cigarettes, a video obtained by the Daily News shows.
“I didn’t do s—!” the 6-foot-4 Garner, wearing a sweaty T-shirt and khaki shorts, told the officers from the 120th Precinct when they approached him. “I was just minding my own business.
“Every time you see me you want to mess with me. I’m tired of it. It stops today!” he yelled.
Ramsey Orta, 22, who shot the video, tried to intervene, telling the cops his friend had just broken up a fight between three men and had not been selling cigarettes.
But when backup uniformed officers arrived, the cops moved in to cuff Garner, the video shows.
“Don’t touch me, please,” he said.
When Garner refused orders to put his hands behind his back, one of the plainclothes cops, wearing a green T-shirt with a yellow No. 99 on the back, got behind him and put him in a chokehold, the footage shows.
A struggle ensued as three uniformed officers joined in on the arrest, knocking the man to the ground.
He screamed, “I can’t breathe!” six times before he went silent and paramedics were called.
“They jumped him and they were choking him. He was foaming at the mouth,” Orta told The News. “And that’s it, he was done. The cops were saying, ‘No, he’s OK, he’s OK.” He wasn’t OK.”
“They were choking him. He kept saying, ‘I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe! Get off of me, get off of me!’ and I didn’t hear any more talking after that,” said witness Valencia Griffin, 50, of Staten Island. “He died right there.”
Are these people so small minded, so gullible, that a piece of candy in a bag and a note is all that’s needed for them to join the KKK? That’s apparently the thinking of the Klan as they attempt to use candy in a bag to bribe the people of South Carolina.
Some residents in northwestern South Carolina say they found bags of candy on their street containing a piece of paper asking them to join the Ku Klux Klan.
Residents in an Oconee County subdivision found the bags Saturday night or Sunday morning.
The paper said “Save Our Land, Join the Klan.” It had a phone number that led to an automated message discussing KKK efforts against illegal immigration.
A voicemail message picked up when someone dials the “Klan Hotline” listed on the paper. It starts with, “Be a man join the Klan! Illegal immigration is destroying America,” discusses immigration concerns and ends with, “always remember if it ain’t white, it ain’t right. White power,” reported WISTV in Columbia, S.C.
Robert Jones told WHNS-TV that he’s the imperial klaliff of the Loyal White Knights and said the effort was part of a recruiting event they hold three times a year.
So far, 32 of those busted have been convicted and the other cases are pending. Two cases of child porn allegedly happened on Disney property.
Disney spokeswoman Jacquee Wahler said these scary arrests represent only a tiny fraction of the company’s workforce.

There is a sickening trend happening these days with so-called “parents” leaving their kids locked in cars on hot days. In a few of these cases, the little helpless kids are killed. So imagine the frantic scene in Texas when passerbys heard children crying in a locked car, on a hot 98 degrees day, and the so-called parent was no where in sight.
They did the only thing any good Samaritan would do – they took a hammer and smashed the glass to free the two small children trapped inside.
The so-called “parent” later ran out of a beauty salon. She claimed she wanted to get her hair washed and left her kids locked in the hot car.
The cops were not called. I cannot understand why.
The FBI’s investigation broke this news. The unimaginable conclusion that some police officers in Florida were active members of the KKK… Oh, wait… we are talking about Florida here… carry on then, no news here!
Police morale in Fruitland Park, Florida has been shaken after a deputy chief and officer resigned when the Federal Bureau of Investigations identified them as members of the Ku Klux Klan.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement presented Chief Terry Isaacs with copies of a confidential FBI report last week that allegedly identified Deputy Chief David Borst and Officer George Hunnewell as members of the KKK.
Earlier this year, a Florida Klan leader boasted to WFTV 9 that the organization has “police officers, paramedics, judges…everywhere.”
However, Chief Isaacs would only tell reporters for the Orlando Sentinel that the pair belonged to a “subversive organization,” because he did not believe he was authorized to release the results of the report.
“It’s a tough situation. He was my assistant,” he said, adding that he never witnessed any behavior that would lead him to believe former Deputy Chief Borst was in the KKK. “But I’ve read the report, and it’s convincing.”
Chief Deputy State Attorney Ric Ridgway — from whom Isaacs sought counsel concerning the FBI’s report — told the Orlando Sentinel that “it’s not a crime to be a member of the KKK, even if you are the deputy chief. It’s not a crime to be stupid. It’s not a crime to hate people. It may be despicable, it may be immoral, but it’s not a crime.”
The loss of two officers is significant for a town that only employs 13 full-time cops. “They’re a good group of people,” Isaacs said. “The last thing I was expecting to hear in the year 2014 was for a professional law-enforcement officer to be a member of a subversive organization.”
Pastor Duane Youngblood of the “Higher Call World Outreach Church” in Pittsburgh is once again under arrest.
The pastor and author of the book “Freedom From Homosexuality: No Longer Living The Lie,” is being charged for sexually assaulting a boy he was supposed to be counseling.
CBS reports that according to the victim, the abuse started in 2009 and ended in 2011 when he was a freshman in college and told Youngblood he didn’t want to be counseled by him anymore.
Youngblood reportedly asked the teen not to tell his mother “because he didn’t want to get into trouble.”
The pastor has a previous arrest record. In 2002, Youngblood was arrested for molesting a 15 year old boy. He was sentenced to one year of intermediate punishment and seven years’ probation.
And get this, Pastor Youngblood is also a registered sex offender.
You’d have to be a very sick individual to first rape someone, and even sicker and to a greater extent, dumber than most, to post the pictures and videos of the victim online.
Two teenage girls say it’s one thing to be the alleged victims of a sexual assault, but another to have pictures and videos taken while you’re passed out and then plastered across social media.
“She didn’t know what happened to her until this piece of vermin began to put pictures and videos online showing this young woman being victimized and abused,” said community activist Quanell X.
He says on June 1 two girls came over to a home on Chessington Drive in southwest Houston to hang out with two of their friends. The victims say they started drinking, blacked out and when they woke up they realized they had been raped.
The victims say over the next several days they found naked pictures, videos posted across different social media platforms.
Local 2 is not identifying either of the victims.
“I feel it’s really sad, I’m hurt, just being here knowing that happened to me and for it to be all over the place, it really hurts,” said one of the victims.
“This one particular address, this one particular house has been a haven for teenage pornographic material and nobody in law enforcement has done a damn thing about it to address this issue,” Quanell X said.
Houston police say there have been no arrests so far in this case and the investigation is ongoing.
