The Ali Effect

So many thoughts. So many questions. So much controversy. So much for us to learn from his actions. Such was the man and his effect on the country. Others have written with far more eloquence than I ever could about the legacy of Muhammad Ali, but from where we are now, we had better pay attention because he had so much to teach us about ourselves and where we are as a culture.

Has boxing been the same since he thankfully retired from the ring in 1980? A rhetorical question, to be sure. Yes, we did have Mike Tyson and Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns and Ray Mancini, but those were strictly fighters. Boxers. Sportsmen. Boxing has fallen farther than politics into the realm of parody, and as an entertainment choice is pretty much irrelevant. Yes, there was that fight between those two guys about a year ago that promised a great match up, but all I can remember is that people complained bitterly about how much they had to shell out for the Pay-Per-View for a fight that was decidedly terrible to watch. I could look up the fighters’ names, but I figure that if I can’t remember the latest fight of the century, it couldn’t have been memorable. That never happened for an Ali fight, even the ones that only got shown in movie theaters where the cigar smoke was so thick it’s a wonder that the fire alarms didn’t go off. Ali was vital. He was a compelling star. And you couldn’t take your eyes off him.

And, no, I do not ever remember wondering how much money any of his big fights raised, nor how much anybody had to pay to see them.

Ali also became the template for the political athlete. He paved the way for Bill Russell, Bill Walton, Tommie Smith, John Carlos, Billie Jean King and others (though not countless others, unfortunately) who saw that sports was intricately connected to politics and to world events. Anyone like me who grew up during the Cold War must remember the protestations by Olympic officials and sportscasters who said that sports and politics must not mix, only to be roundly and crushingly contradicted by the black gloves, Munich, steroids and doping, the Apartheid banishments, the boycotts of 1980 and 1984, and a certain hockey game in Lake Placid. Ali took a stand on the most controversial issues of his day, Vietnam and Civil Rights and spoke truth to power. He didn’t worry, at least outwardly, about shoe contracts or his personal wealth. He was banished, then reinstated, and won more titles. Then he became the ambassador to the world. He led, and that’s what’s made it possible for other athletes to stand up to racist basketball owners and to speak out when members of minority groups are shot by police under dubious and outright illegal circumstances.

Ali was a Muslim. Think about that if you need to. Imagine Ali and Kareem and Ahmad Rashad and every other athlete and entertainer who became a Muslim and changed their name doing so today in the age of know-nothing politicians and citizens who are utterly ignorant of the religion. Would he ever get a fight? Would the government put him on the no-fly list? How much twitter shame would he have to endure? As controversial as it was for people to become Muslims in the 1960s and 70s, and it was controversial, today we would see boycotts and, likely, violence. Ali was able to take his conversion and make it all about peace. He used his religious beliefs as the basis for his pacifism and his sense of justice. And he was right; institutional racism was far more of a threat to him and other African-Americans in 1967 than the Vietcong.

Ali was neither universally popular nor loved during his athletic heyday, nor should we expect that he would be.  But as we are entering another era of domestic change and upheaval, we do need to remember that all people in all professions need to stand up for what is right and for the equal treatment of all people.

Mother of Tupac Shakur Dead at 69 Years Old

She wasn’t as famous as her son, but Afeni Shakur, mother of Rap icon Tupac Shakur, did her part as a Black Panther activist and a philanthropist in her time. She died on Tuesday in California. She was 69 years old.

Deputies responded to a family member’s call reporting “a possible cardiac arrest” at Shakur Davis’ Sausalito home around 9:34 p.m. Monday, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office said.

Shakur Davis was taken to Marin General Hospital where she died at 10:28 p.m., the office said. There was nothing suspicious about her death and there’s no evidence of foul play, Lt. Doug Pittman said in a Tuesday afternoon news conference.

Rapper Demands that “Scumbag” Trump Stop Using his Music – Calls Trump “a Piece of S–t”

Add Rapper Everlast from the rap group “House of Pain” to the long list of musicians who have demanded that Republican leader Donald Trump, stop using their music. And to get his point and frustrations across, Everlast used some rather colorful adjectives to describe the donald.

“Hey @realDonaldTrump stop using my song jump around at your rallies you piece of s–t. Cease and desist is coming you scumbag,” the rapper, whose real name is Erik Francis Schrody, tweeted Monday night.

“Stop playing my song you ignorant racist piece of s–t lawyers are already on it. I don’t want your money no amount you offer will get the license. I would love to meet you and smack that comb over right off your scalp you scumbag!!!” he added on Instagram.

“The reason he doesn’t ask anybody — a lot of people have asked him to cease and desist — (is) because every f–king person would say, ‘No, f–k you,’ except for whatever right-wing country artist wants to give him the song,” he said.

It’s unclear whether Trump’s campaign obtained a license to play the song, which has long been a favorite in movies, clubs and sporting events. A spokeswoman has yet to return the Daily News’ request for comment.

Hollywood Crazies Come Out – Scott Baio Endorses Donald Trump – Video

I enjoyed “Charles in Charge” from back in the days. But never thought the actor who played “Charles” was crazy. With his new endorsement of Trump, I can now say that Scott Baio belongs in a mental asylum.

Scott Baio, of Happy Daysand Charles in Charge, became the latest celebrity to endorse a presidential candidate––and that candidate is Donald Trump. Baio joins an eclectic group of reality stars and other celebs (of varying success) who have come out for The Donald, ranging from Dennis Rodman and Tila Tequila to Gary Busey and Jon Voight.

After talking about how he campaigned for Ronald Reagan, Baio revealed his much coveted endorsement to Jeanine Pirro. He explained that he’s a conservative independent tired of the GOP who just wants to see Trump “go into Washington and blow it up.”

Lawsuit Against Bill Cosby Dismissed

The Pittsburgh woman who brought a defamation lawsuit against Comedian Actor Bill Cosby back in October, saw her suit dismissed on Thursday by a federal judge. The lawsuit alleged that when Bill Cosby and his representatives denied he sexually assaulted her and the other women, his denial in essence called her a liar, thus, defaming her.

Thursday’s decision dismisses the October lawsuit filed by 48-year-old Renita Hill with prejudice. That means she cannot try to amend and re-file the lawsuit.

Hill went public with her allegations in November 2014. She sued Cosby, saying she was made out to be a “liar” and “extortionist” when the comedian, his wife and his attorney issued blanket denials to claims that Cosby drugged and molested several women.

The judge agreed with Cosby’s attorneys that the statements were opinions protected by the First Amendment.
Hill’s attorney promised to appeal. Cosby’s representatives have yet to comment.

All the major awards at the Oscars will be given to Whites only. It is the second year in a row that Blacks and other minority actors are pushed to the side, their hard work not even acknowledge by the Oscar voters. So Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee have both decided that if the Oscars cannot recognize the works of other talents of other race, then they will not recognize the Oscars.

But the Oscars will at least have one black person in attendance. Chris Rock is set to provide the entertainment.

#OscarsSoWhite is Trending on Twitter

The hashtag says it all. For the second year in a row, the Oscars failed to nominate any person of color for any major award.

No people of color were nominated for best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, or best supporting actress and no films featuring African-American actors were nominated in the best picture category.

Straight Outta Compton,” a well-reviewed film featuring African-American actors, quickly began trending on Twitter. Other outraged awards-watchers began tweeting with the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite.

Some of the movies that some critics had expected to be contenders, like “Straight Outta Compton” and “Creed,” had to settle for lesser nominations. Idris Elba had drawn some rave reviews for his performance in “Beasts of No Nation,” and Will Smith had drawn attention for his role in “Concussion,” but neither earned a nod. Benicio Del Toro was also passed over for his acclaimed performance in “Sicario.”

Sylvester Stallone earned a nomination for best supporting actor for “Creed.”

Mike Tyson Knocked Out by a Little Girl’s Hoverboard – Video

I loved watching the Mike Tyson fights. He walked into the ring with just a cut-out towel looking as casual as possible, knowing that in seconds, he will raise his hands in victory. And for the most part with just a few exception, that is exactly what happened.

Except in the match against his little daughter’s hoverboard.

As Tyson rode around in circles on the hoverboard, a little voice tells him to be careful, “I don’t want you to fall,” she said. Moments later, Tyson laughs, clap his hands and began riding towards the camera. He is then seen losing his balance. Seconds later, his left leg slightly rose off the hoverboard and a terrible fall ensued.
