Surf Magazine Sued Over Racist Article, Author Responds With Threatening Letter

Surfing Life, an Australian surf publication, is facing a $200,000 lawsuit for a story that described Indigenous Australian surfer Otis Carey as being “apeish” and comparing him to the late stone age’s Cro-Magnon.

According to the surf website The Inertia, Carey is suing the article’s author Nathan Myers and the surfing magazine owned by Morrison Media for defamation of character and seeking $200,000 in “emotional damages.” The story was published in the March issue of Surfing Life, and the passage in-question reads:

“With his apeish face and cowering hair-curtains, I expect little more than Cro-Magnon grunts from his mouth. I am caught off guard by the clarity and eloquence of his speech.”

In response to the suit, Myers penned an open letter to Carey, which The Inertia published on Monday, but it didn’t do much to appease his critics. In it, he reiterates his apology but also criticizes Carey’s decision to file suit. “I think you’re a fine human,” Myers wrote, “And I also think you’re making a mistake.”

In the letter, Myers calls the lawsuit “unreasonable” and explains that the term “apeish” was “intended to convey the folly of [his] own ill-conceived first impression” of Carey, citing Carey’s “dark, gritty” surf film “Kill the Matador.” Myers also says that the lawsuit could put Surfing Life and its staff of “career world travelers” and “open minded people” out of business, warning Carey that he risks putting his own reputation on the line.

You do realize of course,” Myers says, “that surf magazines are how freesurfers like you make your living, right? … Is this how you want to be remembered by surfing? The man who killed the magazine?”

Critics slammed Myers on Twitter for using a threatening tone in his response to Carey’s suit:
Surfing Line was quick to offer an official apology after the original story was published, claiming that they had no racist intent and that they “read the offending term as a jibe at the stereotypical surfer.” They also noted that their editor Wade Davis is “a man of colour whose maternal family immigrated to Australia from Africa,” a comment that further enraged their Twitter critics:
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time an Indigenous Australian athlete has been subjected to racist comments. Last year, Indigenous rugby player Adam Goodes was offended when a young girl called him an “ape” from the sidelines. The 13 year old apologized to the rugby star and told reporters it was meant to be a joke, but Goodes saw it as a larger problem in Australian society.

“It’s an issue about what our parents are teaching our kids. I never want anyone to feel what it’s like to be abused verbally about your race, about being black, about your appearance.”

To come to the boundary line and hear a 13-year-old girl call me an ‘ape’,” he told news reporters, “and it’s not the first time on a footy field that I’ve been referred to as a ‘monkey’ or an ‘ape’, it was shattering.”

Sorry To Disappoint, But The White House Is Not Deporting Justin Bieber

Photo: Getty

So you went on the White House’s website and you signed a petition to deport Justin Bieber back north to Canada. And you were not alone. Over 270,000 people signed the petition to deport the Biebs.

According to the White House’s own rules, any petition that gathers over 100,000 signatures will receive a response from the administration. Well the White House is responding, and sorry to disappoint you folks, but Justin Bieber is staying put.

On Friday, the following statement was issued.

Thanks for your petition and your participation in We the People.
Sorry to disappoint, but we won’t be commenting on this one.
The We the People terms of participation state that, “to avoid the appearance of improper influence, the White House may decline to address certain procurement, law enforcement, adjudicatory, or similar matters properly within the jurisdiction of federal departments or agencies, federal courts, or state and local government in its response to a petition.”

So we’ll leave it to others to comment on Mr. Bieber’s case, but we’re glad you care about immigration issues. Because our current system is broken. Too many employers game the system by hiring undocumented workers, and 11 million people are living in the shadows.

That status quo isn’t good for our economy or our country. We need common-sense immigration reform to make sure everyone plays by the same set of rules.

Columbus Short Gives Super Bizarre Interview, Calls Radio Host N-Word And More

Getting shot in the season finale of a show can really spoil your day and the host and co-hosts of the Tom Joyner radio show found this out first hand when they tried to interview Scandal’s Columbus Short.

Spoiler – Columbus was shot in the season finale of Scandal.

Check out a transcript of the interview below.

Click here for the audio.

SPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t watched the Scandal finale, don’t read this.

TOM JOYNER: Good morning!

COLUMBUS SHORT: Good morning sir. How you doing, man?

SYBIL WILKES: How are YOU doing?

Tom: How you doin?

Columbus: I couldn’t be better, man, I’m blessed.

Tom: Okay, so last night did you have your viewing and listening party?

Columbus: Uh, Uh, absolutely I did, sir.

Tom: How did it go?

Columbus: (Laughs) No other than it’s supposed to go. Fantastic, sir.

Tom: You got shot at the end of the show, and I’m thinking ‘Wow. ‘

Sybil: Or did he?

Tom: Or did he?

(Silence)

Sybil: No, that’s a question. That’s a question for you.

Columbus: Can I keep it 1,000 with y’all? I don’t know either. (Laughs)

Tom: OK, because I’m thinking, I’m thinking all right. They shot a lot of endings to reveal that Papa Pope was the mastermind of killing all these people.

Columbus: But you know [inaudible]. But you know when you stop racking your brain, you’ll realize it was only one ending. It was the one ending that was already written. Like Shonda had this whole show written from the top to bottom. [inaudible] She has me written top to bottom.

Tom: So how long ago did you know you were going to get shot?

Columbus: The day I got shot. But I’m lying because I didn’t get shot, nigga, man, I mean, people.

Tom Joyner: Oh, I didn’t mean to upset you, Columbus, I’m sorry.

Sybil: It looked like you were going to, so that’s the problem. I get that. So when you got the script that day, but how long ago was that? When you all got the script and you started filming the last episode. Was that within the last month?

Columbus: It was in the last month and what happened was is the producers came to me at the table read and said ‘You gotta work tomorrow and said ‘This is what you got to shoot’ and I was like ‘What?’ But you know what? It’s a beautiful thing. That’s what makes a great actor from a good actor. That’s the deciphering, the deciphering line.

When you get with people like Joe Morton and Jeff Perry and Kate, Kate, Kate Burton and Kerry Washington and Katie Lowes, they know that we can throw something on you today and tomorrow you can change your whole idea of who you thought you were on the show. And they’ll still show up and still deliver. It’s an incredible thing to be a part of.

Tom: I played your song earlier. It’s a nice song.

Columbus: Thank you, I appreciate that.

Tom: Did you always plan to release a song? Was that in the plan?

Columbus: No, that wasn’t in the plan.

Tom: When were you originally going to release this song?

Columbus: When it was ready.

Tom: And when was that?

Columbus: Right now.

J.ANTHONY BROWN: You just don’t want people talking to you?

Columbus: Hey, Hey, Hey, listen, I’m going to keep it 1,000 with you guys.

J.Anthony Brown: That’s 2,000 ‘cause you did a 1,000 before so now we’re 2,000.

Columbus: 1,000 covers a lot of gamut. You deposit $1,000 in a bank account, you’re good. No, but really, keeping it completely honest with you guys, I wasn’t even working on my album when we were shooting this. And I started working on it during this process. It happened to speak to the time that I am in my life. Everything that I’m doing in my album and my single. My single is about women who I believe need to feel confident in themselves. To be like ‘Look, this is what God gave you. You want a man, how about you just be confident in what God gave you.’ Stop trying to put on all that makeup. Stop trying to put on all that eyelashes and hair –

Sybil: So does that mean the women that you’re dealing with are not very confident and that you needed to put this out to send them a message?

Columbus: How about every woman is not really confident. How about I’m not all the way really confident. When you know who you are, confidence is a humbling thing to, to, grasp.

J. Anthony Brown: How about you just don’t do interviews?

Tom: How does your wife feel about the song?

Columbus: Uh, I don’t care. How about I don’t care.

J. Anthony Brown: I think I said it best. If you don’t do interviews…. Well, God Bless you, man.

Tom: All right, Columbus. I hope you have a lot of success. And I hope to see you next season on Scandal. Thanks a lot.

J. Anthony Brown: And keep it 1,000.

Kidnapped boy sings gospel song to save his life

Earlier this month, police say a man kidnapped then nine-year-old Willie Myrick from his southwest Atlanta driveway.

He allegedly drove the boy around for some time before dropping him off unharmed in East Point.

But Willie’s actions during those terrifying three hours are inspiring people around the country.

Willie says he sang the gospel song “Every Praise” until the man let him go.

Thursday evening, community leaders held a meeting in Willie’s honor, celebrating his happy ending, but also telling other parents and children what to do if this happens to them.

In front of a crowded sanctuary at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Willie recounted the moment he was freed from the car. Willie said while he was singing, the man kept cursing and telling him to shut up before eventually kicking him out.

‘I’m so happy!’: Pharrell Williams cries tears of joy during Oprah

He may have written the happiest song of the year, but Pharrell Williams was reduced to tears during his interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The Happy singer sat down with the talk show host for an upcoming episode of Oprah Prime on her OWN Network, and was moved by a video shown to him of people dancing to his chart-topping song.

‘I’m so happy!’ Pharrell, 41, cried before Winfrey showed some pictures of him as a child.

Happy tears: Pharrell Williams cries during Oprah Winfrey interview
Little Pharrell: Oprah had managed to get pictures of the singer as a child

Cute ‘do: They discussed the music that he had listened to as a child.

During the interview, Williams – wearing one of his many distinctive Vivienne Westwood hats – discussed his rise to fame, his song-writing process and the music that influenced him to become a seven-time Grammy winning recording artist and producer.

‘My best songs come from two different ways,’ he says. ‘Either when I have a really good gut feeling about something, it’s written in the shower or on a plane.’

‘Shower’s good, isn’t it?’ Oprah says. ‘There’s something about the water.’

‘The water attracts your ear,’ he says. ‘You get distracted, and your mind wanders.’

Tissue: Winfrey seemed to know the video would bring tears to Pharrell’s eyes

But for his Despicable Me 2 song, Pharrell called it a ‘crazy, half-court shot.’

‘It’s not because you’re that good,’ Williams says. ‘It’s because you’re out of ideas.’

The interview also saw Pharrell talk about his critically-acclaimed new album ‘G I R L’, and his wedding last year to model and designer Helen Lasichanh.

But over the weekend, he was in Indio, California to perform at Coachella 2014, where he reminded the audience of just how many hit songs he’s been behind.
