This Black Man Got Arrested for Encouraging People To Vote

At one point in our short history, voting was a right. A right people fought and died for. But thanks to Republicans and their massive voter suppression drives, encouraging people to vote these days is now seen as a crime, a crime that landed Ty Turner behind bars on Monday.

The stars of North Carolina’s Moral Mondays movement took the stage on Labor Day at Charlotte’s Marshall Park to condemn the state’s record on voter suppression and racial profiling, and urge the community to organize and turn out at the polls this November. Just a few hundred feet away, police cuffed and arrested local LGBT activist and former State Senate candidate Ty Turner as he was putting voting rights information on parked cars.

“They said they would charge me for distributing literature,” Turner told ThinkProgress when he was released a few hours later. “I asked [the policeman] for the ordinance number [being violated], because they can’t put handcuffs on you if they cannot tell you why they’re detaining you. I said, ‘Show me where it’s illegal to do this.’ But he would not do it. The officer got mad and grabbed me. Then he told me that I was resisting arrest!”

The Man Who Filmed Eric Garner’s Murder is Arrested

They’re calling it a set up.

Ramsey Orta, who filmed the NYPD chokehold that resulted in a Eric Garner’s death, was arrested Saturday on gun charges, and his family thinks the NYPD is punishing him for the video.

Police say officers saw Orta stick a handgun into the waistband of his friend as they were leaving a “known drug prone location” on Staten Island Saturday night — just one day after the city medical examiner ruled Garner’s death a homicide.

Orta’s family told the press that the cops had been following him, even parking outside of his house in wait. Orta’s wife Chrissie Ortiz said he phoned her during the incident. “He called me and said, ‘babe, hurry up and come over here, they’re trying to pin something on me,’” she said.

“They park across the street, they follow him,” Ortiz said. “It’s obvious. Once they rule this a homicide, now you all of a sudden find something on him? Come on, let’s be realistic. Even the dumbest criminal would know not to be doing something like that outside. So the whole story doesn’t fit at all.”

Columbus Short Arrested – Charged with Public Intoxication

Columbus Short can’t catch a break it seems, mainly because Columbus Short doesn’t know how to act. And I’m not talking about his acting on television, I’m talking about acting in real life.

Short managed to get himself arrested over the weekend because he went to a bar Friday in Dallas, Texas, to celebrate 4th of July. But instead of paying for his drinks like everyone else, Short tried to leave the bar without paying his bill.

He was of course met by security and he played the race card, accusing them of confronting him because he was black.

Undercover cops tried ending the fight between security and Short, just to have the drunk former Scandal actor turn on them. Witnesses to the confrontation told TMZ that short was “like a dog with a bone who wouldn’t let go.”

Be Happy in Iran, Get Arrested

Arrested for dancing to Pharrell’s Happy.

Six Iranians are behind bars after they appeared in a fan video set to Pharrell Williams’ “Happy,” the American hit song that has sold millions of downloads worldwide.

Tehran Police Chief Hossein Sajedinia ordered the arrests of the three men and three women because they helped make an “obscene video clip that offended the public morals and was released in cyberspace,” the Iranian Student News Agency reported Wednesday.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani may think differently, if a post on his Twitter account is any indication.

U.N. report: Iran developing new missiles Pharrell cries from making people ‘Happy’ Analyzing a region in flux Mother slaps, then forgives son’s murderer

“#Happiness is our people’s right. We shouldn’t be too hard on behaviors caused by joy,” the post read in what appears to be a restatement of a Rouhani comment from 2013, based on a date accompanying the tweet.
Pharrell himself denounced the arrests.

“It is beyond sad that these kids were arrested for trying to spread happiness,” the Grammy Award winner said on his Facebook page.

Man Arrested For Having Sex With an ATM

He apparently misunderstood what it means to make a deposit.

According to a Murfreesboro Police Department report, an officer was dispatched to the bar, where a witness said that Hutton walked to the ATM and “pulled down his pants and underwear exposing his genitals.” Officer M. Rickard added, “Mr. Hutton then attempted to have sexual intercourse with the ATM.”

After his encounter with the ATM, Hutton “then began to walk ‘nude’ around the bar thrusting his hips in the air,” Rickard reported.

Hutton was subsequently escorted from the bar and “told to sit at a wooden picnic table.” But once outside the bar, Hutton allegedly “again exposed himself again and engaged in sexual intercourse with the wooden picnic table.”

Seen in the above mug shot, Hutton was booked into the county jail on a public intoxication charge. A cop reported that Hutton–who remains locked up in lieu of $250 bond–smelled of booze, had bloodshot eyes, and had slurred speech.

Hutton, who was not charged for exposing himself, is scheduled for a July 1 appearance in General Sessions court

Republican Congressman Arrested for Doing Republican Things – Fraud, Perjury, Obstruction

It’s grim news for Congressman Michael Grimm, representing the borough of Staten Island New York. Grimm was arrested this morning on charges raging from fraud to obstruction. In other words, Grimm was being a typical Republican.

The Republican and former FBI agent surrendered to the FBI this morning. After taking him into custody FBI Assistant Director George Venizelos issued a scathing assessment of Grimm.

“As a former FBI agent, Representative Grimm should understand the motto: fidelity, bravery, and integrity. Yet he broke our credo at nearly every turn. In this twenty-count indictment, Representative Grimm lived by a new motto: fraud, perjury, and obstruction,” Venizelos said.

“We demand the best from our political leaders. Yet today, we again find ourselves expecting and rightfully wanting more. And as citizens of this great nation we rightfully demand it,” the FBI agent said.

Grimm, 44, a former Marine as well as an ex-FBI agent, was indicted on charges of fraud, perjury and obstruction. He pleaded not guilty and was released on a $400,000 bond secured by his house.

More Troubles for Knicks – Guard Raymond Felton Arrested on Gun Charges

For those of you who watched Monday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks, the Knicks lost a heartbreak when a prayer from Dallas player Dirk Nowitzki bounced on the rim and fell into the basket in literally the last second of the game. That last basket broke a tie between the two teams, giving Dallas the win.

That last play summed up the way the Knicks season has gone so far, as games the team should have won, somehow resulted in losses. They have suffered numerous injuries and are now playing and praying for some way to make the playoffs, an increasingly difficult task with each breathtaking loss.

Well add this to the misery that is now the Knicks season. Felton Spencer, the point guard for the team, was arrested on gun charges.

According to a New York Police Department spokesman, Felton was arrested at the 20th Precinct shortly after the Knicks lost to the Dallas Mavericks on Monday. He is expected to be arraigned later Tuesday.

The arrest garnered him second and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon felony charges and a fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon misdemeanor charge.

According to New York courts, the second-degree felony alleges Felton “knowingly possesses a loaded firearm” and the third-degree felony alleges Felton “knowingly possesses a firearm which has been defaced for the purpose of concealment or prevention of the detection of a crime or misrepresenting the identity of such firearm.”

The second-degree felony charge carries a maximum sentence of 15 years if convicted, and the third-degree charge carries a maximum sentence of seven years if convicted.

Justin Bieber Arrested for Drag Racing and DUI

Justin Bieber has been arrested for allegedly drag racing in Miami Beach, Fla., and driving under the influence, the Miami Beach Police Department confirmed in a press conference.

Police said 19-year-old Bieber was arrested Thursday just after 4 a.m. on Pine Tree Drive and 26th Street. According to police, he was driving a yellow Lamborghini while under the influence of marijuana, prescription pills and alcohol.

Officers saw two cars racing at 4:09 a.m. Thursday, with two vehicles apparently used to block the area off, Miami Dade Police Chief Raymond A. Martinez said during a press conference. He says the second car was a red Ferrari, and that driver, R&B singer Khalil Sharief, was also arrested. Both cars were towed.

The singer was booked at Miami-Dade County jail, the Miami-Dade County Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation confirmed to FOX411. His bail was set at $2,500, and the star’s mug shot was released, showing him smiling for camera.

The pop star was stopped by police because his car was going nearly double the speed limit in the residential area, and when a police officer approached the singer the officer “smelled a strong odor of alcoholic beverage” coming from the Biebs’ car, Martinez told reporters. According to the arrest report, Bieber’s eyes were bloodshot and he had “a stuper [sic] look on his face.”

Boston Bombing Scammer Files Suit Against Police for Arresting Him

BOSTON — A man charged with trying to bilk the Boston Marathon bombing victims’ fund out of more than $2 million has filed a federal lawsuit claiming state police violated his constitutional rights when they arrested him.

Branden Mattier, 23, alleges police misconduct and is seeking $100,000 in damages, according to the suit filed in U.S. District Court in Boston on Dec. 23 and reported Tuesday by the Boston Herald.

Mattier, of Boston, and his brother filed a claim with The One Fund using the name of a dead aunt, prosecutors said. They claimed she had lost both legs in the attack. Mattier was arrested July 2 when he allegedly accepted a fake check for almost $2.2 million from an undercover state trooper posing as a delivery driver.

His suit says state police never received permission from The One Fund to make a phony check in the organization’s name. Mattier named the state police, a trooper assigned to the state attorney general’s office and FedEx as defendants in the lawsuit.

State attorney general’s spokesman Brad Puffer said he had no comment on the lawsuit.

Mattier and his brother had an appointment to test drive a $52,000 Mercedes Benz the day they expected the check to arrive, prosecutors said.

Mattier is free on $10,000 bail after pleading not guilty to conspiracy to commit larceny, attempt to commit larceny and identity fraud. He is under GPS monitoring and is not allowed to leave the state.
