“Marijuana has had a bad rap for too many years, man. Its time is now.” — Judah Izsraael, activist and co-owner of Weed World Candies
Bilal Muhammad a.k.a. “Dro Man” is a resident of Stuyvesant Town in Manhattan, New York and sells marijuana on the streets of New York.
And he does it from a big green truck that advertises deliveries.
But before you go running out into the streets to flag down one of these colorful vans, check this out first: Mr. Muhammad, owner of Weed World Candies, sell his cannabis in the form of lollipops!
With flavors derived from brands of marijuana such as “Lemon Drop Kush”, “AK-47″, ” Keisha”, “Girl Scout Cookies”, “Purple Urkle”, “Strawberry Cough”, “Heroijuana” & “Blue Dream”, Weed World Candies’ co-owner, 44 y.o. Judah Izsraael claims his candies contain “only a small, yet legal, amount of THC” — the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana that gets you stoned.
Now, while its highly questionable that there is actually a “legal amount” of THC allowed under federal law, it is true that the weed candy wagon has been rolling around the Big Apple since April, and so far they’ve not been hassled by the law. As a matter of fact, this past Monday, one of their vans passed me on street in midtown as I muttered to myself , “What in the heck are they advertising?”
“Marijuana has had a bad rap for too many years, man,” said Izsraael, 43. “Its time is now.”
Dro Man, a prior owner of one of the many West Hollywood, Los Angeles medicinal dispensaries that were forced to shut down earlier this month, has decided to take his business on the road.
He adds that the company was an advocate of the industrialization of marijuana, “and to industrialize it, you’d have to de-criminalize marijuana because you have to grow it. This is part of our mission, because hemp is used for a lot of medicinal things. It’s not a drug. Drugs are manufactured.”
Weed World Candies also makes brownies, cookies, cupcakes, cakes, muffins too!
Hmmm…this warrants some further investigating, no?…
My sister Veronica attended one of the many “Justice For Trayvon” vigils sponsored by churches Saturday all across the country. Here are some images from the NYC rally at City Hall.
These rallies are intended to support The Justice Department in its investigation into whether Zimmerman, who claimed he shot and killed Trayvon Martin in self-defense, violated any federal laws.
They’re also intended garner up enough support to repeal the Stand Your Ground Law, enacted in 2005 and now in place in 21 states in America
“It’s also not honoring the president, who took [Detroit’s auto companies] out of bankruptcy.” — Ingham County Circuit Judge Rosemary Aquillina
Somewhat what I was thinking as I sat down to write this blog regarding the treacherous move Michigan Governor Rick Snyder(R) made on the hardworking people of Detroit Thursday. On Friday Judge Aquillina ordered Detroit’s bankruptcy to be withdrawn, citing that government employees’ pensions would be endangered by federal bankruptcy proceedings.
In March, as Detroit faced an estimated debt of $19 billion, Michigan named Kevyn Orr as emergency manager who then proceeded to do the unthinkable by proposing public employees have their retirement benefits cut and demanding investors in municipal bonds get considerably short-changed on the payback of loans to the city. In the following days both of these groups objected, propelling the city — as the lawmakers say — to file for bankruptcy.
“It’s cheating, sir, and it’s cheating good people who work,” the judge told assistant Attorney General Brian Devlin on Friday.
Governor Snyder says he’s making Detroit a “better place” by putting the city through bankruptcy but angry public employees and retirees and investors, feel his plan is nothing more than a Republican scheme to bust unions and rob public workers out of hard-earned pensions. Again.
Experts say Detroit’s problems are unlikely to spread to other cities…yeah, right! Remember Govenor Walker in Wisconsin?
Detroit stands to be the largest city in history ever to file for bankruptcy.
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says black Americans feel pain after the Trayvon Martin verdict because of a “history that doesn’t go away.”
Obama spoke in a surprise appearance Friday at the White House, his first time appearing for a statement on the verdict since it was issued last Saturday.
“Trayvon could’ve been me 35 years ago,” Obama said.
Obama says African Americans view the case through “a set of experiences and a history that doesn’t go away.” He says black men in particular are used to being feared and blacks see a disparity in the way they are treated under the law.
He says he also has heard drivers lock their doors and has seen women clutch their purses tighter when he walked by, before he was elected to public office.
His work here is not yet done. Happy 95th Birthday Nelson Mandela! God Bless You.
Nelson Mandela’s condition steadily improves as he marks today, July 18th, his 95th birthday.
Mandela was taken to a hospital on June 8 for treatment for a recurring lung infection. In previous announcements, the government said he was in critical but stable condition. Court documents filed by Mandela’s family earlier this month had said Mandela was on life support and near death.
“Madiba remains in hospital in Pretoria but his doctors have confirmed that his health is steadily improving,” said a statement from President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, referring to Mandela by his popular clan name.
Mandela is making “remarkable progress,” said one of his daughters, Zindzi, after tense weeks in which some South Africans talked about the possibility that Mandela was on the verge of dying. “We look forward to having him back at home soon.” the South African Press Association quoted her as saying.
The U.N has declared July 18th as Nelson Mandela International Day in recognition of the Nobel Peace Prize winner’s struggle to end Apartheid. A procession was held in India to honor him and in Washington, U.S. congressional leaders plan a ceremony later today.
This date also marks the 15th wedding anniversary of Mr. Mandela and Graca Machel, the former First Lady of Mozambique who has spent much of the time at her husband’s side during his illness.
(Also Happy Birthday to my Sister Gina!. You’re both in good company).
The letter below was written by Alex Fraser, after recieving the news of George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the fatal 2012 shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin:
Mr. Alex Fraser is a recent graduate of Temple University in Philadelphia. His degree is in theatre. He is an actor living in the Los Angeles area.
“…the Feds would be interested if it could be proven that George profiled Trayvon because of his race and not simply because of his suspicion of him being a criminal.”
“George’s defense lawyers did him no favors during the State trial when it comes to enhancing a Federal case of civil rights violation. In a Federal case it must be alleged that the defendant violated the civil rights of another individual because of race, gender, age, or other protected class. In other words …the Feds would be interested if it could be proven that George profiled Trayvon because of his race and not simply because of his suspicion of him being a criminal. Sounds easy but it is not, they probably couldn’t have done it until O’Mara helped them out by marching witness after witness to the stand and stressing that all of the alleged criminal incidents in the neighborhood were committed by African Americans. Therefore it was reasonable for George to profile Trayvon because he was African American. Remember, he even told the jury that it was OK that George was profiling because that had nothing to do with his need to defend himself. Self defense is not an available defense for violating someones civil rights. It is the profiling itself that is the crime. It is Trayvons right to “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” that was violated. It was Trayvons right to privacy and his right be where he was… George… you just might have another problem here. “

While we await on the jury’s deliberation on a verdict in the tragic Trayvon Martin murder case, regardless of the outcome, I know I must not be so focused on this forest that I forget to see all the trees.
When the verdict is made public, I will let my outrage– if it comes to that–or my sense of justification, be the pivoting point that spins in the directions of other mounting crises developing in our nation that deserve the unwavering attention I gave to Trayvon:
According to the New York Times, over 500 people were murdered last year in Chicago. PLACE OUTRAGE HERE!
At the start of this past Fourth of July, 2013 weekend, at least 55 people have been shot across Chicago, nine fatally.
Eleven people were wounded in shootings on the South and West Sides the following Friday night and early Saturday, the Tribune reports.
The weekend’s youngest victim was injured Thursday in a South Side park. Five-year-old Jaden Donald was shot in the abdomen and right leg while playing in a park just before midnight.
In light of the violence, it’s imperative that we continue to discuss positive solutions that will engage and keep our children safe. The Learn and Earn Program, a summer youth development program that engages hundreds of Chicago teens, is a model that is working.
It provides an academic enrichment and career development opportunity for approximately 700 Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) youth in order to prevent learning loss during summer time. The program also provides a “first real job” experience. This highly successful program is geared towards teens, ages 13-15, and is designed to reach scholars wherever they are on their learning journey.

On June 25, 2013, the Supreme Court effectively struck down the heart of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. PLACE OUTRAGE HERE!
In a vote of 5-to-4, the majority held that the coverage formula in Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, originally passed in 1965 and most recently updated by Congress in 1975, was unconstitutional. The section determined which states must receive clearance from the Justice Department or a federal court in Washington before they made minor changes to voting procedures, like moving a polling place, or major ones, like redrawing electoral districts.
Texas announced shortly after the decision that a voter identification law that had been blocked would go into effect immediately, and that redistricting maps there would no longer need federal approval.

Interest rates on federally subsidized student loans could double by the time students return to campus this Fall. PLACE OUTRAGE HERE!
The possibility of rates soaring from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent is likely if Congress fails to reach a deal. Congress’ Joint Economic Committee has estimated the increase — unless and until it is reversed — will cost the average college student an additional $2,600!
President Barack Obama’s chief of staff, Denis McDonough, and Education Secretary Arne Duncan met with lawmakers Tuesday night to discuss possible options, including the market-based approach Obama included in his budget outline. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said that a proposal to tie loan rates to the 10-year treasury note yield could never pass the Senate and that he couldn’t back something that doesn’t include stronger protections for students and parents.
In the past Democrats and Republicans voted for a few years of freebies in the form of reduced rates for student loans. It was a temporary fix to the escalating costs of getting an education in this country. The freebie is now expiring and some lawmakers are trying to bury the already financially strapped middle-class taxpayers, who btw are paying the highest loan interests ever, to keep the freebie rolling. No sense there!
Democrats, trying to find a stopgap measure to restore the 3.4 percent interest rates, have failed and are now simply looking for a way to lower rates for students before the Fall.
Education in America must not become a privilege. It must remain an inalienable right to all its citizens!
