President Obama on The Buffett Rule – “Not Just About Fairness, It’s Also About Growth”

President Obama urges Congress to pass the Buffett Rule — which asks those who make more than $1 million a year to pay at least the same percentage of their income in taxes as middle class families — as a principle of fairness.

And as many Americans rush to file their taxes this weekend, it’s worth pointing out that we’ve got a tax system that doesn’t always uphold the principle of everyone doing their part.

Now, this is not just about fairness.  This is also about growth.  It’s about being able to make the investments we need to strengthen our economy and create jobs.  And it’s about whether we as a country are willing to pay for those investments.

The president then goes on to explain what the Buffett Rule is and who it will affect if members of Congress – namely Republicans – pass that bill this week.

As Warren points out, that’s not fair and it doesn’t make sense.  It’s wrong that middle-class Americans pay a higher share of their income in taxes than some millionaires and billionaires.

This week, Members of Congress are going to have a chance to set things right.  They get to vote on what we call the Buffett Rule.

It’s simple:  If you make more than $1 million every year, you should pay at least the same percentage of your income in taxes as middle-class families do.  On the other hand, if you make less than $250,000 a year — like 98 percent of American families do — your taxes shouldn’t go up.

President Obama Said North Korea Not Very Good at Launching Missiles

Barack Obama has mocked North Korea’s space technology, saying its failed launch showed the country was wasting money on rockets that “don’t work” while its people starved.

The US president told a television interviewer that the North Koreans had “been trying to launch missiles like this for over a decade now, and they don’t seem to be real good at it”.

But he called Friday’s failed launch an area of deep concern for the United States and told an interview with the Spanish-language TV network Telemundo, broadcast that the US would work with other nations to “further isolate” North Korea.

The launch violates two United Nations Security Council resolutions and the US says it will scrap a plan to give food aid to North Korea.

The Romney’s Are Just Like Us – Let’s All Brag about Our Horses

Mitt Romney is just like us. I remember the last time I was caught on camera discussing my horses, so I can definitely understand Mitt Romney’s almost secret conversation with Sean Hannity of Fox News when Hannity – unaware that his conversation with Romney was being recorded – asked the following question:

“What kind of horses do you have?” asks Hannity.

“She has Austrian warmbloods,” says Romney, “It’s a dressage horse … for the sport she’s in.” “Me? I have a Missouri Fox Trotter. So mine’s like a quarter horse, but just a much better gait — it moves very fast.”

The New York Times reported in December that Romney acquired “six-figure warmblood horses for his wife.” The story was corrected to say that the horses were warmbloods, not thoroughbreds.

We totally understand Romney. We’re all elitists like that!

No Problem Here – President Reveals His 2011 Taxes

CNN is reporting that “the Obama family, in tax returns released Friday by the White House, reported an adjusted gross income of $789,674 for 2011, down from$1,728,096 in the previous year. The family income topped $5.5 million in 2009.

The president earns a salary of $400,000 for his day job. His total earnings are much higher because his books — “Dreams From My Father,” and “The Audacity of Hope” continue to attract buyers.

The Obamas reported paying $162,074 in federal taxes. They donated $172,130, or 22% of their income, to 39 different charities.”

Newt Gingrich – “We’re More Likely to get Distortion Out of Fox [News]”

Oh yes, we all forgot that Newt Gingrich is still running for the Republican nomination. Things are apparently so bad for the Newtsta, that he is now stirring things up with his old boss, the Fox News Network. Anything to get some publicity I guess, and it seems to be working.

Real Clear Politics reports the Gingrich uproar occurred “during a meeting with 18 Delaware Tea Party leaders on Wednesday.”

Said Gingrich: “I think Fox has been for Romney all the way through. In our experience, Callista and I both believe CNN is less biased than Fox this year. We are more likely to get neutral coverage out of CNN than we are of Fox, and we’re more likely to get distortion out of Fox. That’s just a fact.”

Gignrich was an employee himself of the news channel as recently as last year but was suspended as he geared up for a presidential bid.

TV Newser has a response from Fox News: “This is nothing other than Newt auditioning for a windfall of a gig at CNN — that’s the kind of man he is.”

What’s Wrong With Millionaires Paying The Same Rate You Pay?

President Obama once again called on Congress to pass the Buffett Rule – a policy initiative being pushed by Democrats that requires millionaires and billionaires to pay “their fair share” in taxes. The president admitted that although millionaires and billionaires paying more in taxes will not solve the budget crisis, he said the extra revenue would help reduce the federal debt and pay for government investments in programs like education.

“One in four millionaires pays a lower tax rate than millions of hardworking middle-class households,” the president said. “It’s just plain wrong that middle-class Americans pay a higher share of their income in taxes than some millionaires and billionaires.”

The Senate will vote on the Buffet Rule next week.

Attorney General Eric Holder Promises Justice For Trayvon Based on Evidence Collection

Attorney General Eric Holder said Wednesday that the Justice Department will take appropriate action in the killing of Trayvon Martin if it finds evidence that a federal criminal civil rights crime has been committed.

The attorney general made the comments in an appearance before a civil rights organization founded by the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Holder said the department will conduct a thorough and independent review of the evidence in the Martin matter. One of the department’s top priorities, said Holder, is preventing and combating youth violence and victimization.

The Justice Department launched an investigation of the Martin killing three weeks ago.

Some of Rick Santorum’s Best Quotes about Mitt Romney

With Santorum officially out-of-the-way, the focus now turns to the general election between Mitt Romney, the last man/robot carrying the Republican banner and President Obama – America’s only legitimate choice for 2012.

But with Santorum gone and the Republican establishment trying to clean up the mess he left behind, there is one remnant of the Santorum that will stay with us forever – his priceless quotes about his fellow Republican, Mittens.

Here are just a some of his best.

”They are not going to nominate a moderate Massachusetts governor who’s been outspending his opponent 10-1 and can’t win the election outright. What chance do we have in a general election if he can’t, with an overwhelming money advantage, be able to deliver any kind of knockout blow to other candidates?” — NBC’s “Today,” March 12, 2012.

”Do you really believe this country wants to elect a Wall Street financier as the president of the United States? Do you think that’s the kind of experience that we need?” — Rockford, Ill., March 19, 2012.

”Conservatives will not trust (Romney), will not rally around him.” — Conference call with reporters, March 5, 2012.

”Are you going to vote for someone that says one thing one day, anything else the next day that’s necessary to win? Or are you going to vote for someone you trust?” — Feb. 25, 2012, Troy, Mich.

”He’s got a lot of money, but he doesn’t have the convictions, the authenticity nor the record that is necessary to win this election.” — Jan. 17, 2012, South Carolina.

”Pick any other Republican in the country. (Romney) is the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama.” — March 25, 2012, Franksville, Wis.

Newt Gingrich’s Check, Bouncing Like a Rubber Ball

Five Republicans have filed the necessary papers and $500 fee to qualify for the June 26 Utah presidential primary election, but with Rick Santorum dropping out of the race Tuesday, only four will be on the ballot.

Or possibly three.

Utah Elections Director Mark Thomas said a designated agent for the Gingrich campaign brought the filing papers and a check for $500 in March, but the state was notified by the bank that the check had bounced. He said the office has tried to contact the Gingrich campaign through the telephone number and email provided on the application, but has not received a response.

Recently, the state sent a certified letter to the campaign, stating that if the fee isn’t paid by April 20, Gingrich will be disqualified and will not be on the ballot.
