The Brooklyn Nets Have To Win

Last night during the 2013 NBA Draft the Brooklyn Nets acquired the Celtics two biggest names, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett along with veteran shooter Jason Terry; in return the Boston Celtics got three first round picks (’14, ’16, and ’18), Kris Humphries (expiring contract), Gerald Wallace, Kris Joseph, Marshon Brooks, and Keith Bogans. Here’s a minute to let that all sink in.

The pressure is on for new Nets coach Jason Kidd

Right minute over, you alright? Looking at this trade it shows that the Brooklyn Nets have no problem with being way over the cap, love to be a center of attention, and have fully embraced the “win now” mind set. Overall their starting five: Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Brook Lopez, is pretty strong looking. With Paul Pierce they fill their need at Small Forward, with Kevin Garnett they bring a tested player and veteran into the locker room, lastly with Jason Terry they bring more perimeter shooting.

Will Brooklyn hoist a NBA Championship banner soon? Unlikely.

The trade puts Brooklyn in a tough position for the next few seasons. This team is walking into the 2013-2014 season with a new inexperienced coach, aging roster, weak bench, and as a whole way over the cap and into the luxury tax. If you ever wanted to see a team pull a “all or nothing” move, you’re looking at it. Brooklyn clinched 4th seed in the East last season and lost to an undermanned Chicago Bulls team. With the additions of Pierce, Garnett, and Terry they become more intimidating but still lack the punch teams like the Indiana Pacers, Miami Heat, and Chicago Bulls have to even contend for a championship. The Brooklyn Nets are stuck at the borderline of being mediocre and being a contender this season and will be stuck there for many years to come.

The Clippers Have Arrived

..well actually the Clippers were quite a force for the past two seasons really but now they’ve just landed an amazing coach, Doc Rivers, from the Boston Celtics. Yes, after eight days and what seemed like constant “on then off again” trade talks, the deal has been reached between both teams to let Doc Rivers out of his current Boston contract and be able to sign with the L.A Clippers; In return the Celtics will be given a future unprotected 2015 first round draft pick.

Welcome to the Western Conference Doc

It’s clearly obvious that the Clippers got the best end of this deal;  with the experience and resume of such a coach this will surely secure free agent to be Chris Paul into signing a long term contract with the Clippers, word on the internet is that he really pushed to get Doc Rivers on board. Back on the East Coast the Celtics seem like a boat without a rudder now. The team now lacks a head coach with a roster not fit to compete but in a total rebuilding mode; Veteran Paul Pierce may be bought out by the Celtics or traded at the deadline, Kevin Garnett may also be traded away. They also need to find a head coach, I do hope they give Brian Shaw a call and a much deserved chance.

Doc Rivers loved coaching Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce

I can’t help but feel sad for Boston fans. While they knew a total rebuild had to happen sooner rather than later, to be on the verge of losing a lot memorable faces must be hard, especially in such a fashion. I wish the best for Doc Rivers, Kevin Garnett, and Paul Pierce this up coming NBA season. Things will sure be different…

What I’ve Been Watching

Well I may be a guy who loves his sports, action movies, and anything that involves explosions,  I sometimes just channel surf and see what’s on. One night I ran into Girl Code on MTV and after one show I’ve become hooked.

Girl Code is just the female version of Guy Code. Though if you have never heard of either here’s a simple explanation: A group of women (comics, pop culture experts, celebs, etc.) express their point of view or “Girl Code” on various subjects that range from Shopping, First Dates, Sleepovers, Being Classy, and much more.

Carly Aquilino is one if the members

Of course you won’t be watching this show for it’s ability to spew vital knowledge onto your brain, you should be watching this show just for the laughs. The show is just funny to hear the blunt, honest, and funny responses to each category.

Girl Code has new episodes every Tuesday at 9:30 and 10:30; there are also reruns constantly.

Welcome Tim Tebow

Tim Tebow has only been in the league for three years and has already played for two different teams, the Denver Broncos which he was originally drafted and most recently the horrible experience in New York with the Jets. Now though after being rejected by the Jacksonville Jaguars, the entire Canadian Football League, and even the Arena Football League, he has been signed by the powerhouse New England Patriots for and undisclosed length and money.

If Bill Belichick can’t find a use for Tebow I’ll be shocked

While I am not a Tim Tebow fan I am very happy for him to have been signed to a team. Tebow has the heart and desire to compete that most stars lack on top of that he has the work ethic to match that of any superstar. I’m glad he’s finally on a team that can utilize his skills that he will bring, especially since he is now working again with ex Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels once again in New England. Most importantly the media circus that has followed Tebow around his rather short career will be silenced in New England as all media circus’s have been before. I wish Tim Tebow the best of luck and most of all I am happy he may finally have a chance to play the game he so desperately wants to.

Tesla Loses Its Battle In Texas

Perhaps you have heard of the automotive company Tesla Motors and their CEO Elon Musk. Well for those who have not Tesla Motors is a start up automotive company that is focused on revolutionizing the automobile and bringing the entire automotive industry into the 21st century. The company was founded in 2003 by Elon Musk, Martin Eberhard, Marc Tarpenning, JB Straubel, and Ian Wright. The companies first vehicle was called the Tesla Roadster which was a an all electric sports car; their following car is pictured above, called the Model S it is an all electric sedan and is currently leading the way in EV vehicles.

Tesla’s futuristic approach also appeared in how they went about selling their cars. You can travel in any direction and you will find multiple car dealerships for various auto companies that are privately owned by a family or as a group venture. Tesla though has established company owned stores to eliminate the middle man in car purchases and to bring forth a more efficient and cheaper way for anyone to purchase a car.

This radical way to sell cars though has caused quite a stir in Virgina and Texas where state laws do not allow a company to own the dealerships let alone sell their own cars. Today it was reported that Texas has shot down Tesla’s appeal to state laws to allow the company to sell their own cars through company owned dealerships.

Elon Musk personally pleaded his case before the Texas State Legislature during their meetings but was greeted with a stone wall when trying to change the laws and in return refused to budge when Texas Auto Dealers Association President Bill Wolters tried to compromise saying that Tesla could maintain some control over the dealerships but not all, of course Musk refused to give in. Word circulating around the story says that Elon Musk plans to take this fight to the federal courts where he hopes to have much more success.

The King Stands Alone In His Court

The Big Three (From left to right: Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade, and Lebron James) were meant to be dominate for years to come

In today’s world of basketball a superstar cannot take his team to the Finals, or even deep into the playoffs for that matter, anymore. No longer will we see superstars like Allen Iverson take a cap strapped and D-League talent team into the Finals. In today’s basketball world it takes two superstars and one star to carry a team into the playoffs, that is what we know as “The Big Three”. The Spurs have Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, and Manu Ginobli and we’ve seen the Celtics have their own in Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett. None though were ever as feared than Miami’s Big Three in superstars Dwayne Wade and Lebron James coupled with the star power in Chris Bosh. Around those core three a full team was built and made to win, no not just win, but to dominate the National Basketball League for years to come. Why then are the Miami Heat one game away from elimination? One game away from throwing away a season where the Miami Heat earned 66 wins and an almost record breaking 27 game win streak; One game away from what was suppose to be years of dominance being thrown away.

Rather the less famous of the Miami’s Big Three is Power Forward Chris Bosh

While Chris Bosh is not a superstar, he is easily the most important role player on the Miami Heat. His first two seasons in Miami he’s averaged around 18 PPG and around 8 RPG. In this series with Indiana though he’s come up small, so small he might as be invisible. His numbers suggest he’s in a slump (11.3 PPG, 3.7 RPG, and shooting 41.1%) and he’s even admitted he’s just not feeling his normal self. Granted Bosh is battling an ankle “injury” it can’t be that serious seeing how he has started all the games in the playoffs and only against Indiana has he really fallen off.

The Heat use to be Dwayne Wade’s team before Lebron

Oh the once athletic and high flying Dwayne Wade has started to show the wear and tear of playing basketball the way he does. We all knew Wade was hurting with his chronic knee problems but we never knew the extent of it until this series. His play vs Indiana has shown him miss open shots, easy lay ups, and just not the superstar caliber play we’ve seen Wade play with his entire career; he’s averaging only 14.0 points per game, a post season career low for him. Dwayne has been quoted by saying that the Heat cannot win with Lebron James playing hero ball and that James needs to trust the team and play the way the Heat did to win their last title.

The King is poised to either rise above the rest or watch the “Big Three” era crumble

Tonight all eye’s will be on Wade, James, and Bosh. Will we see a resurgence in Dwayne Wade’s ability to play like he use to? Will we see Bosh become that perfect complimentary piece to James and Wade? If those two continue to hide in the shadows when the spot light is on them, we can all safely say that the era of Miami’s “Big Three” is over and that King James now stands alone in his court.

The Fast and Furious 6 Short Review (Spoilers)

Well the weather hasn’t been great here in New Jersey so I stayed away from the shore this Memorial Day Weekend and spent Monday night at the movies with my friends. They talked me into seeing Fast and Furious 6; here is my short review.

What I liked:

  • There are two simple things that appeal to a teenage guy like me, fast cars and hot girls. This movie has them both so that part of me was satisfied.
  • This movie is a direct sequel to F&F 5 so there isn’t this hour of character introductions and back stories.

What I disliked:

  • It’s a direct sequel…so if you are just now jumping into the Fast and Furious series, well you’ll be totally lost and confused.
  • This movie is no Tokyo Drift. Tokyo Drift is the ultimate movie in this entire movie series; it encompasses everything Fast and Furious should be about: fast exotic cars, hot girls, and awesome street races
  • What in the world was I watching? Fast and Furious 6 seemed to have more love stories than Twilight, more explosions than Transformers, more cheesy one liners than any comedy movie, more car crashes than The Blues Brothers, and more gun fights than an old western.
  • Hey…uh where were the car races? There was one legitimate street race that lasted three or four minutes.
  • The plot gets even more unrealistic to the point it just doesn’t even make sense. (Spoiler Alert) You mean to tell me a car crew of internationally wanted cons aren’t able to be tracked down while hiding in the near open and hired by a crime fighting unit to take down a rival crew led by an ex SAS operative? Sure…
  • There’s going to be another next July. I can tell you already that Fast and Furious 6 was made to lead directly into the next one that’s already been confirmed. Now I understand the need to bring the story full circle but the plot is going to be the same just with a new “bad guy” in it who is another big name (ahem Jason Statham). I just hope they bring Fast and Furious back to it’s roots because this series is becoming as played out as Saw and Final Destination.

My final impressions? Well if you have that much free time, a little kid who wants to see it, or friends who will buy you your ticket then by all means go see Fast and Furious 6. Otherwise save yourself the $13 for a ticket and go buy lunch or dinner.

The Parenting Extremes

For as long as I can remember I’ve had complete freedom when it comes with what I can do with my life. My parents have rarely, if ever, said I can’t do something or hang out with certain people. For as long as I can also remember, I’ve never met parents that are anywhere near as lenient as my parents; many of my friends parents hover over them in one way or another.

My parents didn’t think twice letting me drive and take my friends to play paintball

If you ask my parents why they give me such freedoms, their answer will be that they trust me completely. I’ve never given them a reason to not. I don’t come home drunk or on some drug(s), do reckless things, hang out with the wrong crowd, or be a total numb skull. This trust is what lets me leave late at night, come home even later, have my own car, promote for clubs, sleep over a girlfriends house and hang out with friends they have never met.

Now you may think my parents aren’t involved much in my life if they give me such freedom but, that would be wrong. I love hanging out with my mom and though I can be seen as a tougher kid, I’m not ashamed to say that. Sure me and my dad may get on each other nerves sometimes but, we still have a lot in common that keeps us close. I really do enjoy being around my parents and hanging out with them both.

I was trusted with a car as soon as I got my license

On the other side of the spectrum, most of my friends parents still have a tendency to hover over them as if they’re twelve years old. Their parents control who they hang out with, don’t trust them when they’re out, check in on them constantly, to sum it up they baby their teenage son or daughter. They seem to shelter their kid from the world as much as they possibly can, the same world they’ll one day be on their own to live in.

Ask these teens if they can’t wait to get away from their parents thanks to college or to just be able to move out one day and they will all say “yes!” These same teens usually go totally rebellious once they are free of their parents since they can finally choose their own life to live.

I am not a parent nor am I claiming to be one in anyway. I’ve never raised a kid and don’t plan to for many years to come. I am only a product of how I was raised by my parents; I was raised in a way that I believe every kid should be as well. We all need to be able to experience the world when we’re young, the world we will one day be on our own to live in.

The Dwight Howard Situation

I will just like to put this out there now, I’m a big Lakers fan so pardon me if this article has any bias based opinions.

Back in August of last year the Dwight Howard to LA trade went down and my beloved Lakers went to the top of the charts and instant favorites to be serious contenders for our next NBA Championship. Our front court had the most dominant center in the league in Dwight Howard, the best passing big man in Pau Gasol; add to that one of the greatest shooters in NBA history in Steve Nash and one of the best to ever play the game in Kobe Bryant. Fast forward to April of this year and we are swept right out of the playoffs, the ones we just barely crept into, by the San Antonio Spurs. Now Laker Nation awaits July 1st when our next “franchise superstar” in Dwight Howard marches his way into free agency. After watching him this season, I say let him go.

How Laker Nation last saw Dwight during game 4 against the Spurs

This years free agency class is highlighted by Dwight Howard (seeing that Chris Paul will most likely stay with the Clippers) and the teams measuring their interest in the big man revolve around Los Angeles, Houston, and Dallas. Only the Lakers though can offer him their franchise max contract of five years with $118 million dollars along with their history of storied big men and the tradition of winning no matter what. Houston can offer four years with $98 million dollars and their young up and coming star in James Harden. Dallas can offer Dwight the same as Houston. From a money point of view the Lakers are the clear-cut winners and from a historical point of view the Lakers also are clear winners; from a pure basketball point of view though Houston are clear winners as they only need a man like Dwight to contend in the West.

Dwight Howard received a lot of punishment from the media for leaving Orlando the way he did, is that bound to repeat?

Statistically Dwight Howard has been declining over, especially over the past season. Between 2008-2011 Dwight took his Magic team to one Final appearance and a 219-102 record; over the past two seasons with the Magic and Lakers he’s finished with a total 75-55 record. Wow. His offensive production has also dipped sharply; in 2011 he averaged 22.9 PPG, 14.1 RPG, and a 59% FG. In 2013 he was averaging 17.1 PPG, 12.4 RPG, while shooting %58 from the field. Dwight has clearly past his peak production and no team should commit such a large amount of their salary cap or build their team around a star who has already started dropping off. Of course..the Lakers are run by Jim Buss so that’s still possible.

Looking past the numbers it isn’t hard to see that Dwight just cannot handle the pressure of playing in L.A. Playing for the Lakers, especially to be the next franchise player, means you must live up to some huge names and live up to the Laker tradition of winning. The Lakers, since 1960, have sent 25 teams to the NBA Finals, won 11 championships, and have had our court graced by the likes of Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, and Shaquille O’Neal. To top that all off the L.A Lakers have had four of the ten best basketball teams ever (’72, ’82, ’87, ’01), have been run by one of the greatest owners in history by Jerry Buss, and have been coached by the future Hall of Famer in Phil Jackson. If all that wasn’t hard enough to live up to as the next franchise player in Los Angeles, Dwight Howard would be filling the void of the greatest Laker of all time in Kobe Bryant. It’s sad to say that faced with any type of pressure a man like Dwight Howard who stands six foot and eleven inches shrinks back to a normal height.

Perhaps the self-proclaimed “Superman” isn’t so “super” anymore

No matter what the media is saying about the pending free agency of Dwight Howard and no matter what team does land the big man, it will be a question if the team wants to roll the dice on Howard or chooses to pass. Houston is the clear basketball choice for Howard as that team is young and ready to make an even bigger splash next season than they did this past season. A James Harden – Dwight Howard combo would be a mighty force to reckon with no matter who they face. As for my beloved Lakers please Jim Buss do not even approach the table and pick up the dice.

The Desire To Be Independent

Last night I drove my friend Kim and her sister home and got into one of the most interesting conversations I’ve had in quite a long time. Kim believes her boyfriend needs to become more independent from his parents as she sees them as still treating him as if he is a young kid, he is actually nineteen. He recently got a good paying job and she says that he is on his way and hopefully will become less dependent on his parents. Her sister on the other hand says that neither of them are ready to be fully independent; she brought up very good points seeing that both live under their roofs of their respected parents still and a part time job will never even pay half of any bill. Her final thoughts on the matter were “You’re both not ready to be independent , nobody is forcing you to do so. Ya both can still ask your parents for whatever you want unlike when you’re older. You need to enjoy that luxury while you still can.”

The most expensive thing I ever bought with my own money, I did feel quite accomplished to do so

Going through middle and high school I was always labeled as the “rich kid” and I tried so hard to shake that false nickname. That goal coupled with just growing up can explain why I desire to be seen or at least try to be independent and make my own way. I can’t even remember the last time I asked for a gift, birthday or even Christmas, on top of that fact nights I go out with friends I always turn down any money my parents want to give me. I’ve gotten into the habit of “If I can’t afford it, I don’t buy it.” It seems to be quite a good motto to live by. My desire to be independent is fueled by my pride, I feel that relying on my parents when I’m eighteen isn’t something I should be doing.

Looking around at my group of friends most of them go to school full time and a handful have a job on the side. Of course thanks to scholarships and loans that money earned from a job is mostly used for leisurely purposes and rarely saved or invested. On the other hand though, most of them want to make it on their own as well and really just grow up and be dependent on no one by themselves. It’s safe to assume that all of us teenagers want to be independent.

Perhaps though, my friend’s sister is completely right. Perhaps none of us teens are really one hundred percent ready to make it on our own just yet. We still live under our parents roofs and I can’t say I know any of my friends who pay all of their own bills by themselves. We still have the luxury of being helped by our parents and it really is something we should enjoy and not brush aside. I guess my desire to be fully independent can be put on hold for at least another year or two.

My Short Review of The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby by R. Scott Fitzgerald was a required book to have read in my high school sophomore year; I enjoyed the book so much I read it three times start to finish that year. Think of my excitement when I heard they were making The Great Gatsby movie. Luckily, I was able to go see the movie last night with a group of friends. I walked in expecting to be amazed and love it. I didn’t.

With Leonardo Dicaprio as Jay Gatsby I expected an amazing performance

As the title states, this is a short review, thus I shall touch on my main “likes” and “dislikes”.

What I Liked:

  • Dicaprio as Jay Gatsby, he fits the character perfectly and plays this mysterious, nervous, but luxurious man very well.
  • The sense of how grand some scenes were such as Gatsby’s infamous parties as you could just see that every walk of New York City life came to them
  • The historical accuracy of the movie down to every small detail

What I Disliked:

  • The soundtrack was quite possibly the worst part of this movie. The parties had a band playing, but you never would hear them since their music was covered by Jay Z or Kanye. I’d prefer hearing 1920’s swing music in a movie based in that time period over Kanye West.
  • Some scenes were poorly designed as you could easily tell it was some cheap green screen or made entirely on a computer
  • The constant narrating by Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) and odd scenes were it his words being written on screen.
  • A lack of details compared to the book, granted this a movie.
  • The surrounding cast. I never felt drawn to them as they were just simple characters thrown into the movie to accompany Gatsby and very few were given any explanation as to who they were.
  • The movie as a whole just felt poorly made and had a “cheap” vibe surrounding it.

Overall, I left the theater very disappointed. I’ve always heard that books were always better than the movies based on them and never did I believe the people who told me that. This one time though, the book has the movie beat by light years.

Amazing What An E-mail Can Mean

I remember around this time last year I was sitting in my math class and my teacher told us to go to FutureMe.org and write an e-mail to ourselves in the future. I’m pretty sure I sat there for about twenty minutes staring at the blank “Your Letter” box thinking what I would write. Fast forward another twenty minutes I had a miniature novel typed to myself to be delivered on my birthday, August 11th.

What my screen looked like for a good twenty minutes

Unfortunately I don’t have that email anymore, but I remember I didn’t accomplish any thing I wanted to I set out to do. I never went to Monmouth University, broke up with my long time girlfriend a few months later, and still had my high mileage car. The last part to my email though was a nice message, “…remember dude. Life is good!” While my life sure did change between the time I sent that email and the time I received it, it’s nice to have ended it with a smile.

I  definitely think sending yourself an email to yourself in the future is an eye opening thing. Sure you may start out like me, starring at a blank screen, but you’ll get started and keep going. The wonderful thing about this site is that it’s anonymous and the email can be delivered to you as far in the future as you’d like. You should all go check it out!
