JOHANNESBURG (AP) — The brother of Olympic star Oscar Pistorius is facing a culpable homicide charge for a 2008 road death, compounding problems for the family after the double-amputee runner was charged with premeditated murder in the Feb. 14 shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Lawyer Kenny Oldwage said in a statement that Carl had been involved in a car accident “in which a woman motorcyclist sadly lost her life.” He said that “there is no doubt that Carl is innocent and the charge will be challenged in court.”
Carl Pistorius was already in court last Thursday, as his brother Oscar was facing a bail hearing, and will appear again at the end of next month.

This week saw the introduction of HTC’s next flagship phone, named the HTC One just like its predecessor. The handset materials and design are a bit of a departure for HTC as the new phone will use an all aluminum enclosure and a pair of front-facing speakers. As a result, the audio experience ought to be a highlight for the One, but visually oriented readers will be happy with the display as well: HTC is packing in 468 pixels per inch on the 4.7-inch, 1080p display.
HTC’s One will include an LTE radio for fast mobile broadband and run on Google’s Android Jelly Bean software. The company is also including several of its own software features: BlinkFeed streams news, social networking updates and other information; Sense TV provides video content guides and uses an infrared sensor turning the One into a remote control; customized home screens are available, similar to prior versions of HTC’s sense software.
The flagship phone doesn’t yet have a price tag as that will come from carriers — likely next month — but will be available in both a 32- and 64 GB option. Other internal specs include a 1.7 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 chipset, 2 GB of memory, NFC radio and integrated 2300 mAh battery.
She is absolutely the koolest First Lady this nation has ever seen. And that was before this video surfaced showing Michelle Obama getting down.
The video featured Jimmy Fallon dressed as a woman with wig and all, alongside the First Lady both doing what they called, the “Evolution of Mom Dancing,” a dance to promote Obama’s Let’s Move! youth fitness and nutrition campaign.
It’s now VIRAL, as the internet world flocked to see the Koolest First Lady Ever!
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — At least 28 people were injured in a crash at the end of a Nascar race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday afternoon, bringing the issue of safety at racetracks back to the forefront on the eve of Sunday’s season-opening showcase, the Daytona 500.
Byron Cogdell, a spokesman at Halifax Medical Center, confirmed that seven people were being treated there for injuries caused by debris that flew into the stands, with two of them in critical condition, including one child.
Cogdell also said the Halifax Health Port Orange Medical Center was treating six more of the injured, with those in stable condition. Another was being treated at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach.
The Daytona International Speedway president, Joie Chitwood, said 14 people were transported to various hospitals, with another 14 treated at an infield care center at the track.
The injuries occurred after a 12-car crash as the field approached the checkered flag at the end of a Nationwide Series race won by Tony Stewart. The No. 32 car driven by the rookie Kyle Larson went airborne in the wreck and hit the catch-fence that surrounds the track and is designed to protect fans. The entire front end of Larson’s racecar was sheared off and debris from the car, including two tires, flew into the stands. The engine wound up in a hole in the catch-fence.
Something big is getting ready to happen on March 1st. The Sequester is coming and Republicans are once again, sitting on their hands instead of doing whatever they can to protect the economy and the middle class. It’s the same old story – By doing nothing, the effects of the coming Sequester protects the rich, while the middle class suffers.
So in preparation for the big event, Democrats are coming together through the efforts of The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee – The DCCC – by creating an ad targeting 27 Teaparty Republicans who would love nothing more than seeing a suffering middle class after the Sequester kicks in.
The head of the DCCC, Steve Israel put it this way:
“There are real-world consequences for middle class families because of House Republicans’ dysfunction and chronic chaos. For the defense workers who may get pink slips, the federal law enforcement officers who may be furloughed, and the FBI agents and the food inspectors who are looking at layoffs, they will be reminded that those pink slips have been brought to hardworking Americans by this Tea Party Republican Congress.
It is time for House Republicans to come back to work to avert this crisis, stop protecting tax breaks for special interests and corporations — and stand up for the middle class.”
The Republican leaders in the House of Representative and their members have been on vacation for the past couple weeks. There is absolutely no urgency on their part to get back to work.

Chilean-born, New York-based writer, photographer Camilo Jose Vergara has been travelling across the US since 1970, photo documenting street portraits of Dr. Martin Luther King jr.
Having discovered the many hand painted murals done by local artists on neighborhood walls of car repair shops, alleyways, barbershop and the like, Vargas noticed a consistent theme of this this folk art whether it be in a Latino, Native American or Asian neighborhood,
“Over time I became interested in learning why these images are so pervasive. I feel that they reflect a significant cultural phenomenon: the rise of Dr. King as a central moral figure in poor neighborhoods, and his elevation to secular sainthood as the savior of dispossessed African Americans. His varied representations, often based on photographs taken from the national media, express poor people’s perceptions.” Camilo Vergara
