The Capitol was locked down Thursday after shots were fired outside one of the House office buildings.
Some lawmakers said seven or eight shots were fired and that they seemed to be coming from the area of the Rayburn House Office Building.
It appeared at least one person was injured in the shooting.
Media reports suggested the incident began at the White House and ended on Capitol Hill.
ABC News issued an alert saying someone had tried to ram a barricade near the White House and then fled in a vehicle with police in pursuit.
NBC News reporter Pete Williams tweeted that the incident began at the White House and led to a car chase.
ABC News, citing police, shot and killed a woman who was driving the car.
The reports could be immediately confirmed.
