This Artist Turns Guns into Musical Instruments

Pedro Reyes says being Mexican is like living in an apartment where an upstairs neighbor has a leaking swimming pool.

“Just what is leaking,” says Reyes, “is hundreds of thousands of guns.”

He wants people to think about the availability of guns in the United States, and the impact that has in Mexico.

At the University of South Florida in Tampa, he recently held a series of workshops and a performance, using theater to encourage a discussion about guns. It’s called “Legislative Theater,” a style of performance pioneered in Latin America in the 1960s to influence social change.

In Tampa, Reyes called his project “The Amendment to the Amendment.” Specifically, the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees the right to bear arms. Reyes asks his actors and the audience to consider if there are possible changes that might improve the amendment

Reyes believes art should address social issues like gun violence, even when they’re difficult and controversial. “We have to be allowed to ask questions,” he says. “If you are not allowed to ask questions, you are not free.”

Reyes also addresses the issue of gun violence in another way, by using guns themselves. His first project began in 2007 in the Mexican city of Culiacan. As part of a campaign to curb shootings, the city collected 1,527 guns. He used them to create art.

“Those 1,527 guns were melted and made into the same number of shovels,” he says. “So for every gun now, there’s a shovel. And with every shovel, we planted a tree.”

Now Reyes is working on a new project. It is one that transforms guns into something more musical.

An exhibition of the work is on display at the University of South Florida’s Contemporary Art Museum. It’s called “Disarm,” and consists of guns that have been turned into musical instruments.

Robin Thicke Hits #1 in the UK (Video)

Robin Thicke’s new single has sold 190,000 copies during its first week’s release in the UK making the tune the fastest selling single of the year.

and rightfully so…

This Blurred Lines collaboration with Pharrell and T.I.  is perfect for the upcoming summer BBQ and backyard party jams. I caught Thicke’s new song earlier today on the radio waves and I’ve been playing this infectiously smooth dance jam ever since.

I am a huge fan of Thicke, Pharrell, and T.I., so I think this collaboration is quite a tasty one.

The song will no doubt remind you of Marvin Gaye’s classic beat, Got To Give It Up — Another perfect summer jam.

Have a listen and don’t be afraid to get up and dance a little. C’mon, Everybody Get Up!

Technology For Interactive Musical Experience!

New musical productions are increasingly making use of technology to embark their listeners into an interactive listening experience. Following the release of Bluebrain’s location aware album-app in 2011, several other musicians and groups have shown their interests for more interactive songs. The album-app by Björk that allow users to experience the songs through a game is another good illustration of this new trend.

Among the many producers who are setting the pace in this new era of music and technology, the “Appsongs” from Jorge Dexter stands out. Without going into the design of the app interface (which is great by the way), the idea of this ‘n’ project itself is just amazing. The listener gets to recombine the components and build the songs they are listening to in real-time. According to the app’s creator, there can be as much as 10^27 possible versions of the same song and the listener gets to decide what version he/she wants: “These songs are not solid, but liquid. They are half alive: always the same and always different”.

Which such innovations going on in this industry, do producers really have a choice but to go with the flow? What will the future of the musical industry look like? Are the days of static entertainment fading away? Food for thought.

The app is available for free on Android and iOS. Have a taste of the app by watching this video:

Sunday, February 10, 2013 “Special Edition” – The 55th GRAMMY AWARDS

I love music. It has the uncanny ability to lift your spirits, give you courage, define a special moment, spur you to action or have you trippin’ & fallin’ into love lol! I’m particular excited about the fresh new blood in the industry right now, thanks in part to the high traffic social media outlets and new technology available that allows  independent artists to sidestep giant music industry moguls and invent new ways to create and market their own music — without ever signing a traditional recording contract!

Well–tonight’s the Grammys, so be sure to tune in later to this blog to check out my take on the celebration!
