Beloved New York Knicks basketball star, Anthony Mason, suffered a massive heart attack on February 14th and was rushed to a New York hospital where he underwent four surgeries that same day. On hearing the news, players and fans sent their well wishes to the superstar and his family.
Sports broadcaster Tina Cervasio shared a typed statement from Mason’s son, who updated us on the state of his father’s health:
Matta World Peace part 2!
World Peace is eager to reunite with his former Lakers coach, Phil Jackson, and his former Los Angeles teammate, coach Derek Fisher, and erase the bitter memory of his original homecoming.
“[World Peace] has the utmost respect for Phil and Derek,’’ his agent, Marc Cornstein, told The Post.
“There’s a history there. They know he’s out there.’’
The Knicks are trying to add another good-sized small forward to the roster. After Carmelo Anthony, only rookie Cleanthony Early is a true small forward. During summer league play, Early is trying to prove he is ready to be Anthony’s backup, but hasn’t shown he can create his own shot.
The World Peace camp has expressed interest to the Knicks. Under the buyout, the Knicks already are paying World Peace $250,000 for next season. If World Peace were invited and made the team, he’d be eligible for the veteran’s minimum, $1.4 million.
Just hours after small forward and free agent Carmelo Anthony met with the Los Angeles Lakers, the New York Knicks had their own meeting with the player and offered him the most any team could – a five year contract worth $129 million, according to ESPN Sports.
If Melo accepts the offer, he would be one of the highest paid players in the NBA. The meeting ended with no word from Carmelo on whether he would accept the offer.
The Lakers are offering Carmelo $98 million for a 4 year contract, the highest offer they are allowed to make.
Accepting the Knicks offer would equal roughly $25.8-million a year for the NBA star, compared to around $24.2-million from the Lakers. With a little over $1 million a year difference, Melo’s decision on where to play rests more on the potential of winning a championship than the finances.
What will he do? We wait for his decision.
On Monday, the New York Knicks under the guidance of Phil Jackson fired head coach Mike Woodson and the entire coaching staff.
Here’s the announcement:
New York Knickerbockers President Phil Jackson announced today that the team’s coaching staff have been relieved of their duties, effective immediately.
“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Mike Woodson and his entire staff,” Jackson said. “The coaches and players on this team had an extremely difficult 2013-14 season, and blame should not be put on one individual. But the time has come for change throughout the franchise as we start the journey to assess and build this team for next season and beyond.
“Everyone in this franchise owes a great deal of gratitude to what Mike and his staff have done. We wish him the best.”
In parts of three seasons with the Knicks, Woodson compiled an overall record of 109-79 (.580) that included two consecutive NBA Playoff appearances and an Atlantic Division title – the team’s first in 19 years. On Mar. 19, 2014, he became just the seventh coach in franchise history to reach the century mark in victories. Initially named Knicks interim head coach with 24 games remaining in the 2011-12 season, Woodson completed his ninth season at the helm of an NBA franchise, posting a record of 315-365.
The search for a new coaching staff will begin immediately.
The New York Knicks had a disappointing season, loosing games they should have won and waiting until the last minute in too many games to mount their impossible comeback. But when it came to playing the Brooklyn Nets, the Knicks were apparently up for the challenge. And there is a reason for that… bragging rights.
After winning the final game against Brooklyn, a game and a win that was meaningless to the fan considering the fact that the Knicks are out of the playoffs, J.R Smith explained that bragging rights do matter.
“Hell yeah! I mean, I’m cool with some of those guys over there, so I can still say something when we’re in the gym this summer. As long as I can say they didn’t beat us that many times, we’re good.”
For the record, national bragging rights are far more important and appealing than local bragging rights. Ask any fan of the game and I’m sure they’ll agree that bringing home the championship title is far more important than saying you beat the Nets in the regular season.
Beating the Nets is not even a consolation prize for crying out loud, but apparently for the Knicks fans, it’s all we have these days.
The Knicks prevented the Nets from clinching the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs and won their third straight in their too-little, too-late strong finish.
Yay!
Phil Jackson was “around” the Knicks’ training facility on Wednesday, according to Mike Woodson, who says the new club president basically is “letting me coach” with the team barely breathing in the playoff chase.
“Phil, I gather, he’s kind of staying out of the way and letting me do my thing in terms of trying to get this team in the playoffs,” Woodson said after the Knicks reconvened for practice following two days off after Sunday’s loss in Miami. “That’s OK. I’m sure when the time comes he and I will have a chance to sit down and talk and see where we are.
“But first things first, guys, make no mistake about it, we’re in a playoff race trying to get this eighth spot. That’s where everybody’s focus should be.”
Woodson added that Jackson, who is expected to bring in another coach after the season ends, is “doing the things he’s supposed to be doing” — such as meeting with the team’s scouts and GM Steve Mills — and “he’s letting me coach.”
The Knicks (33-45) have four games remaining beginning Friday in Toronto, and began play Wednesday 1 ½ games behind No.8 Atlanta in the East
Well, the other shoe has dropped.
Knicks guard J.R. Smith was fined $50,000 for what the NBA termed “recurring instances of unsportsmanlike conduct” in a Wednesday announcement, stemming from Smith’s shoelace-untying antics in the team’s past two games.
Smith initially was let off with a warning after the league investigated him for untying the shoelace of the Mavericks’ Shawn Marion during a free-throw attempt in Sunday’s game in Dallas. Then he was back at it Tuesday, trying the shoelace trick again — but the Pistons’ Greg Monroe successfully avoided it.
“He was warned, he comes back and he makes the same mistake, and it’s not right,” coach Mike Woodson said Wednesday on ESPN radio. “I’m going to address it tomorrow when he comes in for work, because it’s unacceptable. It’s unprofessional. That’s the only [two words] I can use. You just can’t do that.”
The mercurial swingman, who is averaging 11.3 points on miserable 34.8 percent shooting, was previously fined $25,000 by the NBA in November for directing “hostile” Twitter posts at Detroit’s Brandon Jennings.
On Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, the Detroit Pistons defeated the New York Knicks for the first time since 2011.
The thrilling victory was on their home court, The Palace, which made it even sweeter. But the highlight of the game happened in the stands.
The State Farm dance cam was making its way through the crowd, when an adorable young fan started exuberantly pop-locking in the stands. Clinton Shannon Sailes Sr, known to Detroit fans as “The Dancing Usher” took it as a challenge; what happened next is pure viral magic.

The New York Knicks aren’t doing too good right now. In a recent interview on ESPN, the Knicks head coach Mike Woodson made a statement that caught the ear of the NBA gods.
The Knicks Coach was talking about the foul calls or lack of calls where his star player Carmelo Anthony is concerned, and this statement cost him $25,000
Absolutely. And I’m not going to shy away from that either. I think Melo gets hit more than ever.”
…
“I’ve been at this thing 30 years and sometimes I’m starting to wonder what’s a foul and what’s not a foul.”
…
“The offense normally has the advantage when you’re making plays at the rim…Melo draws a lot of contact but he comes up empty a lot of times as well.”
