Georgia Looses Another…

Since Governor Kemp signed a restrictive voting bill geared a limiting the votes of blacks in Georgia, advertisers and those with commercial interest in the state have steadily removed their business in protest. Will Smith and Antoine Fuqua are among the latest.

Antoine Fuqua and Will Smith will move production on their big-budget, runaway slave thriller “Emancipation” out of Georgia in protest over the state’s controversial new voting restrictions.

The announcement continues the economic fallout from Gov. Brian Kemp and the state legislature’s decision to pass new regulations that critics maintain amount to voter suppression, aimed at reducing the turnout of people of color. The new laws were passed in the wake of former President Donald Trump’s unfounded claims of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election, and after Georgia voted for a Democrat for president for the first time in decades. The rules shorten the duration of absentee voting, require absentee voters to produce identification, limit the use of drop boxes and make it a crime to hand out free food or water to voters standing in line.

Georgia Officials Certify Joe Biden’s Election Win

NY Times report that Georgia’s secretary of state certified President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s victory in the state on Friday, dealing a blow to President Trump’s bid to overturn the vote in a half-dozen battleground states and with it the national election that Mr. Biden won decisively.

The Georgia certification, which ensures that Mr. Biden will receive the state’s 16 electoral votes, was an early milestone in the state-by-state process of finalizing Mr. Biden’s victory, a process that is set to unfold in the coming days as Mr. Trump continues to deny his defeat and cry fraud and his campaign and its surrogates inundate the courts with largely baseless lawsuits that have so far been unsuccessful.

“I live by the motto that numbers don’t lie,” the secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger, Georgia’s top election official and a Republican, said at a Friday morning news conference at the state capitol. “I believe that the numbers that we have presented today are correct.”

The certification followed a hand recount of the state’s five million votes that Mr. Raffensperger ordered after it was requested by the Trump campaign. The recount found that Mr. Biden beat Mr. Trump by more than 12,000 votes.

Stacey Abrams Credited for Massive Voter Turnout in Georgia

Giving credit where credit is due…

Stacey Abrams, who earlier this year was on a short list of potential vice-presidential candidates, was ultimately not chosen by Joseph R. Biden Jr. But on Friday, as Mr. Biden took a narrow lead in Georgia, it was Ms. Abrams who was celebrated, a sign of her remarkable ascent as a power broker since her failed bid for governor of that state two years ago.

Celebrities, activists and voters across Georgia credited Ms. Abrams with moving past her loss — she came within 55,000 votes of the governor’s mansion — and building a well-funded network of organizations that highlighted voter suppression in the state and inspired an estimated 800,000 residents to register to vote.

“You have to build the infrastructure to organize and motivate your base, and you have to persuade people,” said Jason Carter, a Democrat who was the party’s candidate for governor in 2014. “Stacey built that infrastructure, and Donald Trump’s presidency energized that infrastructure, and it opened up voters to persuasion who were previously not open, particularly in the suburbs.”

Mr. Biden pulled ahead of President Trump in Georgia, a state that has not elected a Democratic presidential candidate in nearly three decades.

Georgia’s Republican Lt. Governor Denies Claims of Fraud in Election

Not all Republicans got the memo. While most of Trump’s Minions are going around trying to convince Americans that Trump won the election, Georgia Lt. Governor, Geoff Duncan went on CNN today and denied any validity to Trump’s “rigged election” talking point.

Asked multiple times about any irregularities in Georgia’s presidential election, Duncan continuously slapped down Trump’s fraud claims.

“My office has been in close communication with the secretary of state’s office, and the attorney general‘s office and made sure that if there’s any sort of systemic examples of fraud or voter disenfranchisement across the voting base to let us know. We’ve not had any sort of credible incidents raised to our level yet, and so we’ll continue to make sure that the opportunity to make sure every legal ballot is counted is there, but at this point, we’ve not seen any sort of credible examples.”

Georgia Republican – “I do not support a livable wage”

The Georgia run-off between Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican Karen Handel is set for June 20. Today, however, we learned that Handel does not want the people of Georgia to make enough money to survive!

Among the questions posed to Handel and Democrat Jon Ossoff during a televised debate was whether they favor of a minimum wage increase.

Ossoff, who came just shy of receiving enough votes in the April primary to avoid a June 20 runoff against Handel, said he does — that “the minimum wage should be a livable wage.”

“Look, if somebody’s working a 40-hour workweek, they deserve the kind of standard of living that Americans expect,” Ossoff said. “That’s part of the American dream, and there are too many folks having trouble making ends meet.”

Handel followed up by saying the issue is “an example of the fundamental difference between a liberal and a conservative.”

“I do not support a livable wage,” she said. “What I support is making sure we have an economy that is robust with low taxes and less regulation so that those small businesses that would be dramatically hurt if you imposed higher minimum wages on them are able to do what they do best: grow jobs and create good paying jobs for the people of the 6th District.”

Georgia’s minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, the same as the federal minimum wage. The minimum livable wage for a single adult in the three counties that make up Georgia’s 6th District is $12.01 per hour, according to MIT’s Living Wage Calculator.
