The autopsy report is in. George Michael died of natural causes as the result of heart disease and a fatty liver, a British coroner said Tuesday.
Darren Salter, senior coroner for the county of Oxfordshire in southern England, said a post-mortem has found that the singer died of “dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and fatty liver.”
Dilated cardiomyopathy is a condition in which the left ventricle of the heart becomes stretched and weakened, limiting the heart’s ability to pump blood. Myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle.
The former Wham! singer-songwriter was found dead at his country home in Oxfordshire on Dec. 25. He was 53.
He sold over 100 million albums over his 40 years career, but on Sunday, December 25th, the sultry voice of George Michael went silent. He was 53 years old. His publicist released a statement confirming the death of the star.
“It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period, his publicist said, “The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.”
Police investigating the death say they were called to a property in Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire shortly before 2pm on Christmas Day. “Sadly, a 53-year-old man was confirmed deceased at the scene” the reports say. “At this stage the death is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.”
George Michael, 49, is being treated for ‘minor cuts and bruises’ sustained from a car accident inside a Range Rover on a motorway outside of London Thursday night.
A publicist for George Michael stated,
George Michael was a passenger in a vehicle involved in a traffic accident yesterday evening. No third party was involved. We have no further comment at this time
It is still unclear whether George Michael himself or the driver of the vehicle in question was airlifted from the scene and taken to a hospital for further treatment.
An ambulance rep gave the following:
The man who we believe to be in his 40s sustained a head injury and following treatment, stabilization and immobilization by land and air ambulance crews, he was flown to hospital for further care.
The “Faith” singer has been involved in a few accidents in the past where he spent time in jail, and even had a major health scare where he lost consciousness from a deathly bout of pneumonia in 2011.
Thankfully, this time his accident was nothing too serious and he was the passenger and not a driver under the influence again.
And well, since this article is about George Michael (one of my favorite singers of all-time), it gives me the perfect excuse to play one of his tunes.
So, here is some classic “Careless Whisper” for your listening pleasure…
