Ebola Victim in Texas Downgraded to Critical Condition

It’s not looking good for Thomas Duncan, the man from Liberia who traveled to the United States on September 20th, after being exposed to the deadly disease in Liberia.

The Texas hospital treating Thomas Eric Duncan said in a brief statement: “Mr. Duncan is in critical condition.”

The update came as US authorities said none of the individuals believed to have had exposure to Mr Duncan, including nine deemed to be at high risk, had shown any signs of Ebola infection.

“We are confident that none of those with definite contact had any symptoms related to Ebola, none of them had fever,” said Tom Frieden, the director of the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The nine people deemed at high risk would be monitored closely, Mr Frieden said. “We will be looking very closely particularly at the nine individuals in the coming days, understanding that the peak period after exposure is about eight to nine days but can be as long as 21 days,” he said.

Mr Duncan was initially sent home when he first sought medical care, leaving a four-day span when he was sick and contagious while in contact with others, sparking concern over how many others may have been exposed.

Another Day Passes, And Nelson Mandela Still In Critical Condition

After hours of vigils and secret family meetings, South Africans awoke to another day of unease Wednesday as ailing anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela remained hospitalized in critical condition.

“Former President Nelson Mandela’s condition remains unchanged in hospital and doctors continue to do their best to ensure his recovery, well-being and comfort,” the government said in a statement late Tuesday night.

As the nation remained on edge, police barricaded the street leading to the hospital’s main entrance.

Well-wishers hung balloons, stuffed animals and messages of support along the wall outside his Pretoria hospital . Crowds hovering nearby sang “where is Mandela” as they matched toward the entrance.

Mandela has been hospitalized since June 8 for a recurring lung infection, and authorities have described his condition as critical in the last few days.

Nelson Mandela Now in Critical Condition

Nelson Mandela was in critical condition Sunday after a deterioration in his health, and doctors “are doing everything possible” for him, South Africa’s government said.

The office of President Jacob Zuma said that on Sunday evening the president had visited Mandela, the former president of the country who was imprisoned for nearly three decades as he battled the country’s apartheid system of racial separatism.

Zuma’s office said he was informed by Mandela’s doctors that his condition had become critical in the past 24 hours.

Mandela, 94, has been in intensive care for more than two weeks. He was hospitalized on June 8 for what the government said was a recurring lung infection.
