This Columbia University graduation became a real tear-jerker when a U.S. Army Captain, stationed in Afghanistan, surprised his daughter as she walked across the stage Monday.
“After I saw him, I couldn’t stop crying,” graduate Ruby Robinson told the Daily News Tuesday.
“I was definitely surprised,” the 22-year-old computer science major added. “It was an amazing rush of emotions.”
Her father, Army Capt. Keith Robinson, dressed in army fatigues and carrying a bouquet of flowers, was the first person she saw after she shook hands with University President Lee Bollinger.
“Congratulations, young lady,” the 25-year Army veteran said to his daughter as they hugged on the ceremonial stage.
Ruby burst into tears as she clutched her father, who kissed her on the forehead.
REDELL COUNTY, N.C. (WTVR) – Police apprehended a man accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl. The man was also accused of living in the girl’s closet for five days.WSOC reported the victim’s mother found Jarred Workman, 27, of Albemarle, hiding in her daughter’s closet Friday. The girl’s mother told WSOC that she had no idea the man was living inside her daughter’s closet when she made the shocking discovery.
“I asked him who he was and he said his name was Jarred Workman and that he was 19,” she said.
Once caught in the closet, police said Workman ran off and left his wallet and cell phone behind.
Police said Workman had been living inside the closet from April 27 through May 2.
The woman’s daughter said she met Workman online and developed an online relationship three weeks prior to April 27. However, once they arranged to meet and he arrived at her house, he sexually assaulted her and moved in.
The crime has baffled investigators.
“Just the fact that he would be that brazen to come up here to meet a girl online and then would try to stay in her residence not knowing what her parents are or what they’re about,” said Lt. Bill Hamby with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.
Workman was charged with 11 counts of statutory rape and five counts of statutory sex offense.
“The internet has just ruined that poor girl. She was very taken advantage of,” the girl’s mother said. “I’m uncomfortable in my own home. I’m scared. I can’t sleep at night.”
Dinesh D’Souza, the conservative hero who swore up and down that he was an innocent man falsely accused and arrested because he spoke out against the Obama administration, went to court today and pled guilty!
Dinesh D’Souza told a federal judge on Tuesday that he “deeply” regretted violating a federal campaign finance law, and that he knew that what he did had been wrong, during a hearing in which the conservative author pleaded guilty to making more than $10,000 of contributions in the names of others.
“I knew that making a campaign contribution in the name of another was wrong and something the law forbids,” D’Souza told U.S. District Judge Richard Berman in Manhattan, according to The New York Times. “I deeply regret my conduct.”
“Are you pleading guilty to this crime because you are in fact guilty of it?” Berman asked in response.
“Yes, your honor,” D’Souza said.
Prosecutors in January accused D’Souza of using straw donors to contribute $20,000 to the campaign of Wendy Long, a Republican attorney and old friend of D’Souza’s who in 2012 lost to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY). In addition to the one count of making more than $10,000 of contributions in the names of others, D’Souza was charged with one count of causing false statements. According to Reuters, the false statements charge is expected to be dismissed at D’Souza’s sentencing.
Sarah palin thinks… ( okay, just let that phrase digest for a second…), now back to what I was saying. Sarah Palin thinks that because her halfterm governing skills were questioned, and others had questions about her grandson, she thinks that the entire political career of the former Secretary of State and the lies about her health should be questioned as well.
On her Facebook page, Palin wrote;
“Hey! Hillary’s brain is off-limits! Leave her health records alone! Democrats are right – scouring records of a female candidate is just politics of personal destruction, and for the media to engage in it would be unfair, unethical, and absolutely UNPRECEDENTED. You can’t probe a woman like that because, well, it’s a war on women!
Bunch of sexist, big meanies engaging in something heretofore unheard of, for shame.”
As proof that this isn’t the first time a (potential) female candidate’s health records have been mined for scandal, Palin posted links from POLITCO, Salon and elsewhere about the conspiracy theories surrounding her son Trig. During the 2008 election, rumors swirled that Palin’s youngest, who has Down syndrome, was actually Bristol Palin’s son…
So, just to be clear, Palin is still mad that liberals tried to “scour” her medical records in 2008. But instead of being angry with Rove and other conservatives for doing the same thing to Hillary Clinton, she’s fed up with Democrats for not recognizing the irony?
He apparently misunderstood what it means to make a deposit.
According to a Murfreesboro Police Department report, an officer was dispatched to the bar, where a witness said that Hutton walked to the ATM and “pulled down his pants and underwear exposing his genitals.” Officer M. Rickard added, “Mr. Hutton then attempted to have sexual intercourse with the ATM.”
After his encounter with the ATM, Hutton “then began to walk ‘nude’ around the bar thrusting his hips in the air,” Rickard reported.
Hutton was subsequently escorted from the bar and “told to sit at a wooden picnic table.” But once outside the bar, Hutton allegedly “again exposed himself again and engaged in sexual intercourse with the wooden picnic table.”
Seen in the above mug shot, Hutton was booked into the county jail on a public intoxication charge. A cop reported that Hutton–who remains locked up in lieu of $250 bond–smelled of booze, had bloodshot eyes, and had slurred speech.
Hutton, who was not charged for exposing himself, is scheduled for a July 1 appearance in General Sessions court
I thought the Supreme Court said that racism was over. Maybe the memo hasn’t made its way to the Starlings of the world yet.
N.H. — Town officials confirmed Monday that the 82-year-old police commissioner who was heard publicly calling President Obama the n-word — sparking nationwide outrage — has tendered his resignation.
Robert Copeland, 82, the vice chairman of Wolfeboro’s three-member police commission, turned in his resignation to the head of the police commission late Sunday night, town officials confirmed.
His resignation comes as several of New Hampshire’s most prominent politicians — including Sens. Kelly Ayotte (R) and Jeanne Shaheen (D) and Gov. Maggie Hassan — had called for Copeland’s ouster.
“Commissioner Copeland’s reprehensible comments dishonor law enforcement officials across our state who work hard to ensure that all citizens are treated fairly, and the remarks do not represent the values of New Hampshire residents,” said William Hinkle, a spokesman for New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan. “Governor Hassan believes that he should listen to the people of Wolfeboro and New Hampshire and apologize and step down in order to restore confidence in the Commission.”
We all know Ted Cruz is crazy. There was that time when he stood on the senate floor and spoke for almost 21 hours about… among other things… green eggs and ham.
But Ted Cruz did not fall far from the crazy tree. He is getting serious competition from his dad who recently told a group that the Bible specifies how they should vote.
“As a matter of fact, did you know that the Bible tells you exactly who to vote for?” Papa Cruz said. “Very, very clearly the Bible tells you who to vote for. Let me prove it to you.”
Papa cruise then began to “prove” his point by telling the story of Moses. He spoke of when Jethro – Moses’ father-in-law visited Moses and told him to select other “men” to help settle common disputes among the people, with the more serious disputes settled by Moses. Jethro’s conversation with Moses is detailed in Exodus 18. But it is verse 21 that Papa Cruz fashioned his voting message from. Jethro told Moses;
Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and placesuch over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
Papa Cruz somehow made the connection that Jethro’s direction to Moses is the road map for voting. These four things that Jethro mentioned to Moses now means that Americans must adopt the same four qualities when selecting the “men” who will run this country – “able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness.”
Of course, it wouldn’t be a religious gathering if Papa Cruz didn’t go after the Democrat in the White House. After telling the audience about the four Biblical qualifications for voting, Cruz said, that you should vote for able men, not “the village idiot.”
According to Papa Cruz however, his own son Ted Cruz just got disqualified from running for office. He fails miserably in at least three out of the four “qualifications.” I would fail him in all four qualifications, but I refuse to share my opinion on whether Ted fears God. Of course Ted Cruz says he does, but his actions in the policies he pursues say otherwise.
Brian Tashman reports that Conservative talk show host Jesse Lee Peterson is urging conservative Christians to boycott the NFL over Michael Sam’s “mouth kissing” and “abnormal behavior,” which he believes is “an attack on masculinity and the traditional family.”
Furious at “the disrespect and lack of judgment Michael Sam showed for families and children when he decided to pull that gross stunt on national TV,” Peterson told readers of his Sunday WorldNetDaily column that “if you’re still spending money on games, souvenirs and supporting the NFL brand and you call yourself a Christian, you’re a liar and the truth is not in you.”
He warned that Sam’s “abnormal,” “flamboyant homosexual lifestyle” will inevitably turn the US into a police state like North Korea.
Millions of American families were caught off-guard by the disturbing televised image of black football player Michael Sam and his “boyfriend,” Vito Cammisano, mouth kissing after the St. Louis Rams drafted Sam. The liberal press is celebrating Sam for being the first openly gay player in the NFL.
The world has become one upside-down place! Christians are being slammed while homosexuals are being lifted up. An example is the treatment of the Benham Brothers. David and Jason Benham were set to launch their new home-renovation show, “Flip It Forward,” on HGTV, but the show was yanked because of their pro-traditional marriage and pro-life views.
College and NFL scouts should be clamoring to make a visit to the small town of Manvel, in Texas, after a teenager’s video of him catching his own 40-yard football pass has gone viral. Gary Haynes, a football player at Manvel High School, catapulted onto the national stage after a fellow player and his coach filmed him doing the amazing feat.
Haynes, a 17-year-old junior, was first taped by a teammate who posted the clip on Vine last week, with skeptics alleging the video had to be faked since you can’t see a shadow. Haynes’ coach also had his doubts, so he too staged a recording of the act, and confirmed that Haynes can actually catch his own past. Local news outlet KHOU caught up with the athletic and slightly bashful teen for more:
“I didn’t think it was gonna blow up to be this big to be honest,” admitted Haynes. “I just kept hearing my phone going off and looked at it and it was twitter from ESPN, Sports Nation.”
Some allege the video is fake, pointing to the fact that you can’t see the ball’s shadow. It wouldn’t be the first time a little trickery was used in a Vine video.
Haynes’ coach at Manvel was skeptical too.
So, he shot a video on Tuesday of his 17-year old player doing it again.
“He thought I could do it but he wasn’t sure,” said Haynes. “He wanted to make sure I could do it before going on different TV shows.”
Haynes, who has never been outside of his home state or flown on a plane, was flown to New York last week to appear on a morning show. The University of Houston is rumored to be interested in offering the young man a scholarship.
If nothing else, the past week has shown that those on the left can be just as short-sighted and ill-advised as those on any other part of the political spectrum. That the forum for these misdeeds is the university make the issues that much more compelling.
I’ve been waging a somewhat lonely campaign to remind my senior students that college is not the place to look for job training. Oh, they might find it there, but too many of them chose the schools that they did because “they could get a good job” if they went there. Far be it from me to argue that there’s no financial reward for going to a university, and a good one at that. My point is that too many young people go off to higher education with dollar signs in their heads. My job is to remind them that they are, in fact, going to a place where the people in charge are experts in their fields and will be asking their students to complete academic work that demands rigor, attention to detail and actual academic skills. As with anything related to young people, they’ll eventually learn the lesson.
It’s too bad, though, that the universities are the ones who have gone soft. This graduation season has seen Brandeis, Rutgers and Smith cave in like an abandoned mine in the face of student protests over who would speak at graduation ceremonies. Other universities chose speakers purposely to avoid controversy. This is terrible. I understand that the students are paying for their education and believe that they should have some control over who ushers them into the working world. But to disqualify the head of the International Monetary Fund or former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice misses the point of a liberal education. There people have something valuable to say. They’ve been through some of the pivotal events of the century. They’re powerful women, for heaven’s sake. They deserve to be heard. Shame on the universities who gave in.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, along comes another new concept on the campuses called “trigger warnings.” No, these have nothing to do with guns, but, rather, are a device to let students know that what they are about to read, hear, see or study might offend one or more of their sensibilities. An example:
The most vociferous criticism has focused on trigger warnings for materials that have an established place on syllabuses across the country. Among the suggestions for books that would benefit from trigger warnings are Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice” (contains anti-Semitism) and Virginia Woolf’s “Mrs. Dalloway” (addresses suicide).
I can certainly understand giving students a warning for graphic violence or scenes of genocide or rape, but there is something to be said for surprise or initial reactions or confusion or disbelief when you read or hear something jarring for the first time. That’s part of learning and being aware of one’s own reactions in social or academic situations. And how does one adequately write a policy that covers every eventuality? Didn’t colleges try to do that in the 90s with speech codes? Those didn’t work out so well. I can’t see this working out well either.
Students want to be safe, but learning is not always safe. It’s supposed to be challenging, upsetting, rewarding, fun and, yes, life-altering. Blocking graduation speakers and warning students about some content but not other content is a recipe for intolerance. That’s not right.
There are reports floating around that Drake and Rihanna are headed for divorce court. Well, not really divorce court cuz the two are not married, but you know what I’m sayin.
After dating for the last few months, Drake and Rihanna are on the brink of a split, and according to a new report, it is all over Drake’s feeling that Rihanna is simply “too needy” and getting in the way of his demanding career.
“Rihanna mad at him a little bit because he told her ‘babe, you’re too needy. Let me hustle babe. Let me work.’ That really hurt her feelings because she really loves him and wants things to work out between them,” a source revealed to MTV. “She’s being stubborn. When he told her she’s too needy, she was like ‘all right *****, I’ll show you needy’ and [Rihanna] been doing her own thing since — trying to make him miss her.”Drake-Dating-Rihanna
Following a brief relationship years ago, Drake and Rihanna reunited overseas where they enjoyed several dates in the UK before finally confirming their relationship in London in late March. Since then, the pair have been fairly public with their relationship, even going as far as to share a kiss at the 2014 MTV Movie Awards in April.
