There is a reason you’re not hearing much about Obamacare and how it will spell Armageddon for the United States and its economy. That reason is because Republicans have been proven wrong so many times on this issue, Americans would laugh in their faces if they even try to utter those false claims again.
With that said, supporters of the Affordable Care Act have had quite a few reasons to celebrate lately, and as of yesterday, the news keeps getting better.
Consumers in much of the country will have a broader selection of health insurance plans next year, the Obama administration said Tuesday, as it predicted an increase of about 25 percent in the number of insurers that are expected to compete in federal and state marketplaces. […]
So far, [administration officials] said, the number of insurers, also known as issuers, is up to 315 next year, from 252 this year. For the 36 states served by the federal marketplace, it said, the number is up almost 30 percent, to 248 next year, from 191 this year.
When congressional Republicans predicted that private insurers would want nothing to do with “Obamacare,” and the lack of participation would be a disaster for consumers, the GOP lawmakers had it backwards. Competition has already helped hold down premiums, and with more insurance companies now eager to get into the system and compete for Americans’ business, consumers are poised to benefit even more.
The hate group from Florida that calls itself “Westboro Baptist Church” has accepted the offer of an Australian comedian to fly to Iraq and protest the beheading of Christians who would not convert to Islam.
The offer to pay for and fly all the members of the “Church” to Iraq came from a popular Australian comedian named Adam Hills. The comedian made the offer last month after learning that members of Westboro planned to protest at the funeral of Robin Williams, calling him “a fag lover!.”
On his show, The Last Leg, Adam Hills said;
“If you really believe in standing up to those threatening the Christian way of life, Westboro Baptist Church, how about putting your money where your mouth is, taking a direct flight to Iraq and picketing the people threatening to behead Christians if they don’t convert. Surely that’s more of a threat to Christianity than a guy who said, ‘you think God ever get stoned? Look at a platypus, I think you’d think he might!’”
Adam Hills then went on to promised to “personally pay for every member of the Westboro Baptiste Church to fly to Iraq right now. I’ll even fly you first class.”
Westboro answered on Twitter that they accepted the offer. Further saying, “We accepted! Whence tickets?”
Hills responded via Twitter, “Oh it’s a deal!”
Like I said above, this happened last month. We are still waiting to see Westboro Baptist “Church” in Iraq holding up signs saying “God Hates ISIS” or “God Hates Islam.” This should be entertaining!
An ISIS-linked group has posted a video online allegedly showing the beheading of Frenchman Herve Gourdel.
The 55-year-old man was abducted in Algeria on Monday by a splinter group from Al-Qaeda’s North African branch. The Jund al-Khilafah, or Soldiers of the Caliphate, said it would kill him unless France halts it airstrikes in Iraq within 24 hours.
Update:
French authorities have verified the video’s authenticity.
Terrorism, Russia, Ebola, Climate Change and the nuclear ambitions of Iran were just some of the topics the president touched on in a powerful speech at the General Assembly of the United Nations on Wednesday. But it was his words on terrorism and the role of Muslims around the world in denouncing terrorists groups, that shaped the president’s call to action today.
Here is part of the president’s speech highlighting the threat of terrorism and his call on the world to come together to eradicate it.
Of course, terrorism is not new. Speaking before this Assembly, President Kennedy put it well: “Terror is not a new weapon,” he said. “Throughout history it has been used by those who could not prevail, either by persuasion or example.” In the 20th century, terror was used by all manner of groups who failed to come to power through public support. But in this century, we have faced a more lethal and ideological brand of terrorists who have perverted one of the world’s great religions. With access to technology that allows small groups to do great harm, they have embraced a nightmarish vision that would divide the world into adherents and infidels – killing as many innocent civilians as possible; and employing the most brutal methods to intimidate people within their communities.
I have made it clear that America will not base our entire foreign policy on reacting to terrorism. Rather, we have waged a focused campaign against al Qaeda and its associated forces – taking out their leaders, and denying them the safe-havens they rely upon. At the same time, we have reaffirmed that the United States is not and never will be at war with Islam. Islam teaches peace. Muslims the world over aspire to live with dignity and a sense of justice. And when it comes to America and Islam, there is no us and them – there is only us, because millions of Muslim Americans are part of the fabric of our country.
So we reject any suggestion of a clash of civilizations. Belief in permanent religious war is the misguided refuge of extremists who cannot build or create anything, and therefore peddle only fanaticism and hate. And it is no exaggeration to say that humanity’s future depends on us uniting against those who would divide us along fault lines of tribe or sect; race or religion.
This is not simply a matter of words. Collectively, we must take concrete steps to address the danger posed by religiously motivated fanatics, and the trends that fuel their recruitment. Moreover, this campaign against extremism goes beyond a narrow security challenge. For while we have methodically degraded core al Qaeda and supported a transition to a sovereign Afghan government, extremist ideology has shifted to other places – particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, where a quarter of young people have no job; food and water could grow scarce; corruption is rampant; and sectarian conflicts have become increasingly hard to contain.
As an international community, we must meet this challenge with a focus on four areas. First, the terrorist group known as ISIL must be degraded, and ultimately destroyed.
This group has terrorized all who they come across in Iraq and Syria. Mothers, sisters and daughters have been subjected to rape as a weapon of war. Innocent children have been gunned down. Bodies have been dumped in mass graves. Religious minorities have been starved to death. In the most horrific crimes imaginable, innocent human beings have been beheaded, with videos of the atrocity distributed to shock the conscience of the world.
No God condones this terror. No grievance justifies these actions. There can be no reasoning – no negotiation – with this brand of evil. The only language understood by killers like this is the language of force. So the United States of America will work with a broad coalition to dismantle this network of death.
In this effort, we do not act alone. Nor do we intend to send U.S. troops to occupy foreign lands. Instead, we will support Iraqis and Syrians fighting to reclaim their communities. We will use our military might in a campaign of air strikes to roll back ISIL. We will train and equip forces fighting against these terrorists on the ground. We will work to cut off their financing, and to stop the flow of fighters into and out of the region. Already, over 40 nations have offered to join this coalition. Today, I ask the world to join in this effort. Those who have joined ISIL should leave the battlefield while they can. Those who continue to fight for a hateful cause will find they are increasingly alone. For we will not succumb to threats; and we will demonstrate that the future belongs to those who build – not those who destroy.
Second, it is time for the world – especially Muslim communities – to explicitly, forcefully, and consistently reject the ideology of al Qaeda and ISIL.
It is the task of all great religions to accommodate devout faith with a modern, multicultural world. No children – anywhere – should be educated to hate other people. There should be no more tolerance of so-called clerics who call upon people to harm innocents because they are Jewish, Christian or Muslim. It is time for a new compact among the civilized peoples of this world to eradicate war at its most fundamental source: the corruption of young minds by violent ideology.
The Charlottesville Virginia Police Chief Tim Longo, announced on Tuesday that Jesse Matthew is now wanted on a felony charge. Matthew, a patient technician in the operating room at the University of Virginia Medical Center, is now wanted on an abduction charge in addition to the two other reckless driving charges he received on Monday.
“We reached that point where the Commonwealth felt we had sufficient probable cause to seek an arrest warrant,” Longo said.
The police Chief is referring to the disappearance of University student, Hannah Graham. According to multiple eye witnesses, Jesse Matthew was the last person seen with the 18-year-old Graham in the early morning of September 13th. After bringing Hannah to the Tempo Restaurant for drinks, the two left the restaurant and Hannah has not been seen since then.
After he was identified as a person of interest wanted for questioning in Hannah’s disappearance, Matthew turned himself into police on Saturday and requested a lawyer before police had a chance to question him. He was appointed a lawyer and then left the precinct, speeding off in his car with police following. The police chief said that police ended the chase due to safety concerns for other pedestrians. Jesse has not been seen since.
Matthew is a 32-year-old, 6ft 2 inches black man with dreadlocks and weighs 270 pounds. According to the wanted poster which has since been updated to reflect the abduction charge, Jesse was last seen in possession of his sister’s 1997 light blue Nissan Sentra with a Virginia tag of VAC4575.
There is a reward for Jesse’s capture. He has associates in Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington D.C. If you have any information about Jesse Leroy Matthews, you are asked to contact the Charlottesvile Police Department at 434-970-3280 or call Crime Stoppers at 434-977-4000
He was a passenger in a car that apparently had trouble staying it its lane. But that was the driver’s fault. The driver was the one who drank too much and couldn’t control the vehicle. That does not mean the passenger had to suffer the consequences of the driver’s bad decision or poor driving skills. That does not mean that the passenger had to be slammed to the ground, get his head and face busted opened by police and then get shot with a stun gun multiple times.
That is what happened to Candido Medina-Resendiz the night his friend had too much to drink and decided to drive home. When police noticed the car veering back and forth in the lane, the car was pulled over and the police officer conducted an uneventful a field sobriety test.
After the driver failed, he was arrested. The passenger, hardly able to speak English, sat in the passenger seat until another officer opened the door to get him out.
The first time we see Candido was when his head hit the pavement as he was thrown to the ground by police. The officers began barking instructions to the man although he was unable to understand their commands. One officer threatened to “f*cking kick (his) ass,” because the man was not responding they way he should have. We hear Candido scream as the stun gun is used. Laying on his stomach, police was eventually able to handcuff him, but not before punching the injured man multiple times in the face.
Another police officer is then seen kneeling on Candido’s back while the man cried, still unable to communicate to the officers or follow their instructions due to the language barrier. After what seemed like an eternity, the officer removed his knees from Candido’s back and with the help of the other officers, Candido was lifted and carried to the police car, still screaming in pain.
“It’s very apparent from viewing the video that Mr. Medina-Resendiz was extremely confused about what on Earth was happening to him,” said attorney Kyle Mothershead. “The reason why he was being taken down was not explained to him in either English or Spanish, and he’s confused about what’s happening and why he’s being thrown to the ground.”
Candido Medina-Resendiz eventually went through surgery and had multiple stitches for his troubles, with a metal plate was inserted in head.
Mr.Jon Stewart? I feel your frustrations. I understand exactly what you’re saying. How the… why is it that the dumbest people in the Republican party, the ones always wearing their permanently attached dunce-caps… why are they the ones on the “Republican House Committee on Science, Space and Technology?” I mean, is this a joke? This must be a joke, right?
On his recent show, Stewart discussed among other things, the idiotic Republicans members of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. They’re really a special breed!
In one of the committee’s meeting, John Holdren from the White House science team went before the group to testify about Climate Change and was greeted with some absolutely amazing and idiotic questions from the Republican panel. Questions like, can a wobbling earth disprove your theory of climate change, and how come when ice melt in a cup of water, the water does not overflow.
Yes folks, these are the Republicans on the Science and Technology committee.
Stewart left the wobbling earth explanation to the White House science expert, but he quickly dived into his explanation of the ice in water question.
Understandingly flabbergasted by the lack of science knowledge by the Republican members of the Science committee, Steward broke down the water example to a level even a 2-year-old could understand.
He brought out a glass filled with water and ice and explained that since the water is already in the glass, it is already a part of the composition. So any “melting” of that ice would not have any effect. He then added ice from outside the glass, they way land glaciers melt into the oceans, and he explained that now, with the newly added ice, there will be an effect. Coastal areas are first hand witnesses to this effect.
And as for the Republicans on the Science Committee? They still do not get it!
It is my hope that we will all wake up to the seriousness of Climate change before it is too late. Republicans nationwide and their buddies in Congress have bent backwards trying to appease the lobbyists and those protecting polluters, and today, any talk of legislation to address climate change is considered a declaration of war by Republicans, and they go all out to win that war.
But climate change is happening, it is serious and it is deadly. And you don’t have to listen to the majority of scientists or their findings supporting climate change, you just have to look out your window. We are already seeing the effects in the drastic changes in our weather patterns and the yearly storms that appear stronger and more frequently. Earlier this week, The Rockerfellas, who made millions with investments in fossil fuel, decided that having all the money in the world and no world to live in, is suicide. They announced they will end their investment relationship with companies funding the depletion of the earth and the atmosphere.
Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt today said it was a “mistake” to support the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a group that has said human-created climate change could be “beneficial” and opposes environmental regulations. Schmidt said groups trying to cast doubt on climate change science are “just literally lying.”
Google’s membership in ALEC has been criticized because of the group’s stance on climate change and its opposition to network neutrality rules and municipal broadband. Earlier this month, Google refused to comment after 50 advocacy groups called on the company to end its affiliation with ALEC.
That changed today when Schmidt appeared on The Diane Rehm Show and was asked by a listener whether Google is still supporting ALEC. The listener described ALEC as “lobbyists in DC that are funding climate change deniers.”
Schmidt responded, “we funded them as part of a political campaign for something unrelated. I think the consensus within the company was that was sort of a mistake, and so we’re trying to not do that in the future.”
Schmidt did not say what issue led Google to support ALEC. Yelp reportedly joined ALEC to fight so-called “Strategic lawsuits against public participation,” but it’s not clear if Google had the same motivation. We contacted Google’s public relations department today but haven’t heard back.
Now only if we could get the Republicans and climate change deniers to get on board. They are taking us down a one way path to destruction, and they are doing it for money.
I didn’t know that a polar bear was arrested either. Until I went to one of the few places where real news can be found, Twitter. I was watching cable news of the non Fox variety and all I was hearing about was the NFL and ISIS. Not necessarily in that order. You would think the arrest of a polar bear would be big news, wouldn’t you? Well OK it wasn’t an actual polar bear that was arrested, at least I don’t think so.
There was something called Flood Wall Street going on in New York City. Better known as #floodwallstreet. There was little or no mention of this on the mainstream newscasts. Thousands of people stormed wall street in protest of rampant capitalism and the harrowing effects it has on our climate just as they did on Sunday around the world in the Global Climate March. There was about 15 seconds of coverage on that even though 400,000 people took to the streets in NYC alone.
The Wall Street protest saw over 100 people arrested by the NYPD including someone dressed as a polar bear. The idea is that our capitalistic mentality leads to climate problems. That the big money that is brought in by companies who destroy the climate in order to make that money is far more important to our government than the damage it does to our planet. This is not just a U.S. problem which is why there were protests all over the world on Sunday. The U.S. is certainly the worst offender there is no doubt about that.
At least there is an acceptance of this problem in other nations, they admit it does indeed exist even if there are arguments on what can or should be done about it. In the United States we have a Republican party and nearly half the country who think it’s all a scam. They believe in what we can’t see or prove (the Lord) instead of what we can see and prove (climate change). This is the country I live in.
Then there is the mainstream press. They don’t believe something is a story unless they cover it. Unless Chuck Todd says it’s a story. How can a march on Wall Street over a subject as important as climate change with over 100 arrests including a polar bear not be a major story? Yeah I know we bombed Syria and things are escalating with our “war” on ISIS and I’m sure there will be “boots on the ground” at some point as well, but this is all predictable rehash. We have seen this movie before and we gave it zero stars but for some reason we are seeing it again for the second time. Uniquely American! Barely a word about what is happening right here, actually a few subway stops away from where most of these networks broadcast.
War is big money. Always has been. Marches on Wall Street? Not so much. As I have said before war and violence is also sexy in this country. It gets people excited, including the people who package the news. It’s actually not capitalism per se that they are protesting on Wall Street. It is Capitalism gone wild. Capitalism on acid. Capitalism on steroids. One tweet I saw was from a woman who claimed that people protesting can’t be “Drinking Starbucks, and talking on their IPhone6.” As though this is what they are protesting, the ability to buy a latte and talk to your mother. This is another dumb American who simply doesn’t get it. The money rules all mentality has destroyed this country. Not the money is needed to provide a decent life mentality. You see the difference? Can you or are you just another naive lemming like this woman?
The news media is helping to validate the protesters arguments by only covering news they believe “sells.” Once again follow the money. War is money, NFL is money. Oh, let’s not forget the crazy guy that made it into the White House when the President wasn’t there. Yes, let’s talk about him some more.
Climate change denial includes not covering it on the news. To pretend a major protest isn’t happening.
The United States launched airstrikes in Syria against ISIS targets, sources tell NBC News. The U.S. military plans to strike up to 20 targets — logistics, fuel and weapons depots; training sites; troop encampments; command and control sites; and headquarters for the Sunni fighters.
The U.S. military will deploy manned and unmanned air assets, including F-22s, B-1 bombers, F-16s, F-15s and F/A-18s. The aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush is at the ready in the Persian Gulf, and the USS Arleigh Burke, a guided missile destroyer that fires Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles (TLAMs), is in the Red Sea.
