We thought it was the beginning of a new thing when a professional basketball team –The Miami Heat – did their version of the Harlem Shake. We thought other teams will see the need to follow-suit. But not the Timberwolves. No, they quickly put an end to that. And they did so using someone in a Miami Heat jersey!
The video you see above comes from Sunday’s New York Section I Class AA boys basketball championship game between New Rochelle (N.Y.) High and Mt. Vernon (N.Y.) High. As described more thoroughly by Newsday and Patch, Mt. Vernon led the sectional title game by two points with just 2.9 seconds remaining. Game over, right? Anything but.
With New Rochelle holding possession on the opposite side of the court from where they wanted to be, the team enlisted the school’s star quarterback, Khalil Edney (he plays hoops too, obviously) to send the ball upcourt as deep and accurately as possible. Edney got the ball up to midcourt, but it landed in the wrong set of hands, with Mt. Vernon’s Jalen David coming up with the ball.
What happened next defies all logic. David tossed the ball up in the air. The goal was both simple and obvious: He was trying to kill off the remainder of the game without giving New Rochelle the chance to foul and get a final shot.
Yet the strategy backfired spectacularly, because time never ran out. Instead, the toss arched to the left and forward, with the ball eventually landing right in Edney’s hands just behind midcourt with 0.1 seconds remaining. Given an instant chance to redeem himself, Edney didn’t disappoint, drilling a 55-foot shot to hand New Rochelle the most unlikely of 61-60 victories in memory.
Well, here is another athlete for a paternity suit. This time it is Michael Jordan. This is common. A woman has a date with a famous person, sleeps with that person and, low and behold, gets pregnant. She then waits her customary nine months and then decides that she wants money. So she sues for paternity.
There is only one small problem with this scenario. The child in question is sixteen years old. Sixteen is almost an adult and she decides now that she needs paternity. She has the kid convinced that Michael is his father. He put out a video on YouTube stating that he is Michael Jordan’s son. So, now Michael has to prove that he is not the father of this kid. This would make a great episode of Jerry Springer. She not only wants money from Michael, she wants the paternity verified by giving the child the Jordan last name.
There is something wrong here. Just because someone is famous does not give every crackpot the right to go after them for some imagined slight in a past life. Maybe Michael is the father. Why wait sixteen years to go after him? What happened? Did she run out of other prospects and decided that he was the next best thing?
The courts should stop making it possible for these women to come out of the woodworks and blame famous people for their mistakes. If she was any type of woman, if she had any morals at all, she would not be going after someone just for money. Get a job and support your child as you have done for the sixteen years you had him. Don’t go after a famous figure for money.

Yesterday, the Baseball world learned that the Yankees had made a “significant” offer to Robinson Cano’s agent, Scott Boras. Hal Steinbrenner had eluded to the fact that the Yankees were prepared to make an offer. Then Brian Cashman confirmed to members of the New York media that “a significant offer had been made. The question remains, is it significant enough to get Cano to forgo free agency and pledge his career to the pinstripes?
Scott Boras is notorious for instructing his clients to test the market and use free agency to their advantage. Since Boras usually represents the best of the best, that strategy usually works. Cano said today that he does not want to talk about the Yankees’ offer. He stated “I want to focus on the 2013 season and I don’t want my contract to become a distraction for this team.” Cano has repeatedly let on that Boras is in the driver’s seat of these talks and that he is purely focused on Baseball.
Reputable baseball journalist Jon Heyman took to twitter this morning explaining that in his experience, when a team has to tell the media they made a “significant” offer, a deal is usually not close to done. Sweeny Murti of WCBS thinks that Boras and Cano are just a few days away from calling off talks until after the season. I agree with Sweeny. I think that Cano has all the leverage and no matter what the offer was from the Yankees, it’s only a starting number. Cano is the best second baseman in the league and will command at least 8 years and at least $200 million. Do not fret Yankee fans, I think it’s still more likely that Cano stays in pinstripes but a deal won’t be reached until after the season. If a deal was close, the Yankees wouldn’t have to let their fans know that talks were ongoing. Sit tight. It’s going to get bumpy.
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — The brother of Olympic star Oscar Pistorius is facing a culpable homicide charge for a 2008 road death, compounding problems for the family after the double-amputee runner was charged with premeditated murder in the Feb. 14 shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Lawyer Kenny Oldwage said in a statement that Carl had been involved in a car accident “in which a woman motorcyclist sadly lost her life.” He said that “there is no doubt that Carl is innocent and the charge will be challenged in court.”
Carl Pistorius was already in court last Thursday, as his brother Oscar was facing a bail hearing, and will appear again at the end of next month.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — At least 28 people were injured in a crash at the end of a Nascar race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday afternoon, bringing the issue of safety at racetracks back to the forefront on the eve of Sunday’s season-opening showcase, the Daytona 500.
Byron Cogdell, a spokesman at Halifax Medical Center, confirmed that seven people were being treated there for injuries caused by debris that flew into the stands, with two of them in critical condition, including one child.
Cogdell also said the Halifax Health Port Orange Medical Center was treating six more of the injured, with those in stable condition. Another was being treated at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach.
The Daytona International Speedway president, Joie Chitwood, said 14 people were transported to various hospitals, with another 14 treated at an infield care center at the track.
The injuries occurred after a 12-car crash as the field approached the checkered flag at the end of a Nationwide Series race won by Tony Stewart. The No. 32 car driven by the rookie Kyle Larson went airborne in the wreck and hit the catch-fence that surrounds the track and is designed to protect fans. The entire front end of Larson’s racecar was sheared off and debris from the car, including two tires, flew into the stands. The engine wound up in a hole in the catch-fence.
The Knicks began the season looking like they could be competing for the top spot in the East. A solid starting 5 and a deep bench combined with Carmelo Anthony’s MVP caliber first half was making for some exciting basketball. However, the Knicks limped into the all star break and have started the second half of the season with two very different but equally crushing losses.
Losing to Indiana is not shameful. Not showing up at all to play the game is very shameful. Then to go into Toronto and play the Raptors for what should be an easy win for the Knicks and to be dealt a heart breaking loss. It’s easy to wonder if the Knicks are beginning to crumble. At the begining of the season I wondered if the high average age would become an issue late in the season and it seems that my worries may have been well founded.
One idea to mix things up is by inserting Amar’e into the starting 5. No matter what the team does though, it’s all up to the players and head coach Mike Woodson. The Knicks opted to not make any significant changes at the trade deadline, only signing Kenyon Martin to a 10 day deal. The organization obviously feels that they have the right players on this team. What do you think? Can the Knicks straighten themselves out or are they done for?
Derek Jeter has officially reported to spring training and sat down to address the media mainly about how his ankle is feeling. If you don’t recall, last year during the ALCS, Jeter broke his ankle and had to be carried off the field. He had been playing on what was thought to be a bone bruise but later turned out to be a stress fracture. Jeter revealed to the media that he had screws inserted into his ankle and that they would be there forever. When asked how the off season went, Jeter told the press that it was terrible having to rehab from this injury. Jeter admitted to having to learn how to walk again and even using a motor scooter to get around his 30,000 square foot home.
However, when Jeter was asked if he would be good to go on opening day, his answer was simple. “Why not?” Jeter sees no reason why he wouldn’t be fine to start the season on April 1st. He claims that his ankle is completely healed and that his only hurdle is getting the rest of his 38 year old body into game shape. Jeter was recently cleared by team doctors to resume all baseball activity but said he would not play in a spring training game until March.
I’ve noticed that many baseball “fans” believe that Jeter is too old to come back from this injury and too old to produce on a high level. These people compare him to other short stops and other players of his age. What people don’t understand is that there isn’t a single player in the league like Derek Jeter. If anyone can come back from this injury it is him. To those who say that he is too old to produce, let’s not forget he led the league in hits last season. Jeter believes he can have another year like last year and the Yankees are relying on him to do so. One thing I’ve learned about Derek Jeter since he came up with the club in 1995; he rarely disappoints.
This past week’s blizzard in the Northeast has brought even more attention to the already real possibility of weather playing a factor in next year’s Super Bowl. Super Bowl XLVIII is scheduled to be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey early next February. This marks the first time the NFL has decided to host the big game in a cold weather/open air stadium. Traditionally, the game is either in a warm climate city or played in a dome.
The decision to host the Super Bowl in New Jersey has been a controversial one but has also opened up the possibility for other great cold weather stadiums to play host to Football’s biggest game. Stadiums such as Gillette Stadium in New England or Lambeau Field in Green Bay. The league expects next years Super Bowl to break all sorts of records from attendance to viewers to media coverage. But what happens if it snows? Like really, really snows.
The NFL is discussing contingency plans for such a scenario. Some ideas are moving the game up a day and having it on Saturday night if a storm is rolling in on Sunday, or even pushing the game until Tuesday or Wednesday if need be. However, there are major flaws with both of these plans. MetLife Stadium seats 82,566 people. It is the highest capacity stadium in the NFL and that means it will likely be the highest attended Super Bowl ever. If the day of the game changes, 82,566 people will have to change their plans. Many will be from out of town so those changes will include flight changes and hotel extensions. Further more, if a blizzard rolls into town, the chances the local airports will have to cancel flights are pretty good so that makes it much harder for fans to find their way to the game.
I’m a supporter of the location of next year’s Super Bowl because I think the cold temperature will provide the ultimate test for the league’s two best teams, but I do not doubt that the NFL is mainly relying on luck for things to go as planned. Super Bowl Saturday doesn’t have the same ring to it.
Pitchers and catchers have officially reported to spring training and baseball is now underway. I can confirm that baseball people are doing baseball things in both Florida and Arizona. As camp gets underway, many teams still have issues to work out and even though not a single game has been played, baseball writers all over America have already made their predictions for the World Series.
I’m not a believer in an off season champion. Just because you look good on paper doesn’t mean it will translate. But in the spirit of spring training, I will make my own World Series prediction based solely on what teams look like on paper. The World Series will be played between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Washington Nationals. Toronto will have beaten the Angels to arrive in the fall classic and the Nats will have beaten the Braves in the NLCS. Your world champions will be the Washington Nationals. What a great 2013 season that was! So exciting!
Like I said, I don’t believe this will be the outcome of the season. This is what I believe would happen if “on paper” meant anything after a 162 game season. I made these picks because I think that the Braves and the Nationals are two of the most well built ball clubs we’ve seen in a while but I think the Nats are slightly better. The Angels are always a dangerous team and with Hamilton they just got even more dangerous. They likely have the best hitting outfield in the league and Pujols at first. I also think that Toronto is going to have their turn this year. They had a shot last year until they were riddled with injuries. But that’s the thing. These are my predictions but I don’t think they will happen because after 162 games, players get hurt or have off years or don’t mesh well together. Meanwhile other players have surprisingly great years and stay healthy and a teams vibe carries them somewhere no one ever saw coming.
So there you have it, my prediction that won’t happen. So if you are a fan of any of the teams I picked to lose, don’t worry, there is still a chance.
The Steinbrenner family has a rule. That rule was not even broken for the captain himself. The rule is that the team does not talk about a new contract with a player until that players contract has expired.
Today, word broke that the Yankees have broken that rule. The team has reached out to Robby Cano in hopes of extending the leagues best second baseman. The organization wants Cano to be a Yankee for the entirety of his career and this is the first step. There is no word on whether or not Cano is open to discussing an extension or not but word is that he does not intend to give the Yankees a home town discount.
