Phil Jackson was “around” the Knicks’ training facility on Wednesday, according to Mike Woodson, who says the new club president basically is “letting me coach” with the team barely breathing in the playoff chase.
“Phil, I gather, he’s kind of staying out of the way and letting me do my thing in terms of trying to get this team in the playoffs,” Woodson said after the Knicks reconvened for practice following two days off after Sunday’s loss in Miami. “That’s OK. I’m sure when the time comes he and I will have a chance to sit down and talk and see where we are.
“But first things first, guys, make no mistake about it, we’re in a playoff race trying to get this eighth spot. That’s where everybody’s focus should be.”
Woodson added that Jackson, who is expected to bring in another coach after the season ends, is “doing the things he’s supposed to be doing” — such as meeting with the team’s scouts and GM Steve Mills — and “he’s letting me coach.”
The Knicks (33-45) have four games remaining beginning Friday in Toronto, and began play Wednesday 1 ½ games behind No.8 Atlanta in the East
Days after being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, the Ultimate Warrior James Hellwig was suddenly dead. He made his last appearance on WWE’s Monday Night Raw, where he thanked fans for their all their support.
“No WWE talent becomes a legend on their own,” Hellwig siad. “Every man’s heart one day beats its final beat. His lungs breathe their final breath. And if that man did in his life what makes the blood pulse through the body of others and makes them bleed deeper and something larger than life, then his essence, his spirit, will be immortalized.”
By the story tellers, by the loyalty, by the memory of those who honor him and make the running the man did live forever. You, you, you, you, you, you are the legend makers of Ultimate Warrior.”
The cause of death is not yet known. Hellwig leaves behind his wife and two daughters.
Here is his last return to the ring on April 7th, where he spoke to the fans.
The ceremonial first pitch in baseball has been a tradition for almost as long as baseball has been around. But on a sunny Tuesday afternoon in San Francisco, fans got to see quite possibly the best one yet.
Monday, all eyes were on the Bronx as Derek Jeter started in his final home opener of his storied career.
But by Tuesday, all eyes had shifted to San Francisco and little Miles Scott was set to kick off the Giants home opener with a ceremonial first pitch to remember. Miles is a 5 year old Leukemia survivor who has touched the heart of millions. But due to unforeseen circumstances, Miles was not able to attend. Perhaps it has something to do with his now socialite status from his recent fame. Some have likened this child to Bruce Wayne (billionaire Gotham City playboy and heir to the Wayne fortune).
Luckily for fans, Batkid showed up just in the nick of time to take over First Pitch duties. It’s interesting to note that no one have ever seen Miles Scott and Batkid in the same place at the same time.
Ok. I’ve had my fun with this story, as anyone would because this kid is just so awesome.
Miles Scott’s one wish was to be sidekick to the famed superhero, Batman. Well, this child’s wish went viral. On November 15th, 2013, the city of San Francisco rallied around him in one of the largest and most elaborate Make A Wish plans ever. Actors were hired and sets were designed to give young miles multiple different crime scenarios where by the end of the day, he was able to save Gotham City.
The San Francisco Chronicle even produced a “Gotham City Chronicle” edition with the headline
The Mayor of San Francisco, Ed Lee, presented Batkid with a key to the city and declared November 15th, Batkid day. Batkid even received a video of thanks from President Obama.
Flash foreword to Tuesday as Giants pitcher Matt Cain walked with Batkid hand in hand out to the pitchers mound so that he could deliver the first strike of the day with the help of Batman himself. The scene was one of the most heart warming, this baseball fan has ever seen. Batkid, Miles Scott is an amazing child and Tuesday afternoon, he reminded us what baseball is all about. It’s about the kids.
Thank You, Batkid. You are the greatest superhero of them all.
You can thank Samsung for this one. Because of the mini controversy that erupted when the selfie above was taken, the White House is now considering a ban on all selfies with the president.
Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz took the selfie with Obama Tuesday during the team’s visit to the White House. The pic appeared spontaneous at the moment, but it was revealed a day later that the act, taken with Ortiz’s Samsung Galaxy Note 3 phone, was actually a public relations stunt orchestrated by the Korean telecom conglomerate.
“Maybe this will be the end of all selfies,” White House Senior Adviser Dan Pfeiffer said about the incident Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “(Obama) obviously didn’t know anything about Samsung’s connection to this.”
“Someone who uses the President’s likeness to promote a product… that’s a problem with the White House,” Pfeiffer added. “We’ve had conversations with Samsung about this and have expressed our concerns.”
The Sun has slowly begun to set on the storied career of Derek Jeter. I say that only because today will be the first of quite a few notable lasts for Jeter. This will be the final spring training game of his 20 year+ career. With each passing “last moment” that goes by, the sun will set slowly on the captain’s final season. Hopefully all the pomp and circumstance will give way to one final twilight for Jeter, one final October.
Today’s game will be against the Marlins, and the biggest thing to take away from today will not be any ceremony or speech, no number in monument park or plaque on a wall. It will be as simple as this; The captain has had a completely normal and healthy spring and will head north just recently finding his timing at the plate. Yes, He’ll be 40 in June, but I have learned that whenever those doubters get going, Jeter always shines.
Jeter’s last Opening Day will be on Tuesday the 1st and the following day, Wednesday, April 2nd, the Astros (one of the teams that passed on Jeter in the 1992 draft) will honor Jeter with a brief ceremony before the game. Something that each team is bound to do for the captain as we saw last year with Mariano Rivera’s farewell tour. Wednesday’s ceremony will be attended by Andy Pettitte and Rodger Clemens (for some reason).
Next monday, April 7th, The Yankees will host the Baltimore Orioles in Derek’s final home opener. The details of the pre-game festivities have yet to be released but since the Yankees have all year to plan something special for Jeter, I don’t believe he will be the focus of any ceremony that day. The thing to watch will be the fans. Monday’s home opener will mark the first time the fans will get to say goodbye to the captain in the Bronx.
My heroes, my dreams and my future lay at Yankee Stadium. And they can’t take that away from me.
Sometimes, some people just don’t get it, and in this case, Kobe is one of those people.
Kobe Bryant was recently asked by The New Yorker magazine to weigh in on a widely publicized Miami Heat photo where the team posed in hoodies to show their support for the late Trayvon Martin and his family.
Bryant’s comments have been interpreted by some as an insult to the reigning NBA champions.
“I won’t react to something just because I’m supposed to, because I’m an African-American. That argument doesn’t make any sense to me. So we want to advance as a society and a culture, but, say, if something happens to an African-American we immediately come to his defense? Yet you want to talk about how far we’ve progressed as a society? Well, we’ve progressed as a society, then don’t jump to somebody’s defense just because they’re African-American. You sit and you listen to the facts just like you would in any other situation, right? So I won’t assert myself.”
Bryant was quickly pounced on by commentators on social media.
“Kobe could’ve just shouted out love for Trayvon’s parents, said he couldn’t imagine their loss and kept it breezy. He didn’t,” tweeted Grio columnist Goldie Taylor.
“My issue is that Kobe reduces the Trayvon Martin outrage to blind racial solidarity, when it was about so much more than that,” added ESPN commentator Jemele Hill.
Bryant has yet to respond to the backlash towards his remarks.
They were up by as many as 17 points, but these Knicks still found a way to end their 8 game winning streak and lose a very winnable game against a very subpar team. And the playoff season quickly approaches.
With the eighth-place Hawks coughing up a double-digit lead and losing to Toronto earlier on Sunday, the Knicks squandered a chance to move back within two games of a playoff position in the Eastern Conference.
They greatly damaged their playoff hopes by flushing a 17-point lead and falling to undermanned Cleveland, 106-100, at the Garden, halting their season-best win streak at eight games and putting their season back on red alert.
There have been too many of these squandered opportunities this season. With games like this, these guys don’t deserve playing in the playoffs.
Fortune Magazine put together a list of today’s 50 greatest leaders and in a list consisting of people from all walks of life including, Pope Francis I (number 1), Apple CEO Tim Cook (number 33), and the Dalai Lama (number 9). Fortune Magazine tabbed our Yankee captain as number 11 on the list.
As he begins his 20th and final season in pinstripes, Jeter remains that type of role-model player that even a Red Sox fan must grudgingly respect. it’s not the five World Series rings he’s won or his team record for career hits. in a steroid-tainted, reality-TV era, Jeter, the son of two Army veterans, continues to stand out because of his old-school approach: Never offer excuses or give less than maximum effort.
It is enough of an honor that Fortune Magazine decided to name Jeter to this list, but Fortune felt Jeter was the only athlete deserving enough to make this list. Jeter has always been viewed as an above average player, but as far as his skill level goes, he has never been the undeniable best. That’s not what made him great. The thing that made Jeter great is a word that is so often associated with him: The intangibles.
Jeter was able to come into a starting role on the 1996 Yankees in his rookie season and by half way through that year, he was leading the team straight up to their first World Series title since 1978. Jeter did not relinquish that leadership role and in June of 2003, Jeter was named the 14th captain of the Yankees and has held that title for 11 years making him the longest tenured yankee captain.
It’s a great honor for Jeter to be named to Fortune’s 50 greatest leaders list, but it is also very much deserved.
It’s pretty obvious that the Yankees will retire Derek Jeter’s number this season. After what we saw last year with Mariano Rivera, we can figure that Jeter is in store for a day just like Mo got.
As soon as the captain announced his retirement, tickets for obvious milestone games, skyrocketed in price. Opening Day saw an increase. The last home game went through the roof. Even the last game of the season at Fenway Park got up around $250 for standing room tickets.
However, the most important day is one that is not set in stone yet. Derek Jeter Day will be the day the yankees immortalize Jeter’s number in monument park and thanks to last year’s Mariano Rivera Day, we can make a pretty good educated guess.
Judging by how the Yankees like to do things, I am putting my money on Sunday, September 21st against the Blue Jays. That day has seen a hike in ticket sales as well due to the fact that people like me figure that to be the day but tickets are still pretty affordable. There are many sites with tickets still available but my go to site is www.VIVIDSEATS.com. Click on that link to go right to the game on September 21st.
As I’m sure you have heard, this will be Derek Jeter’s last season in professional baseball. If for some reason you haven’t heard, Derek Jeter announced his retirement via a Facebook post last month.
Jeter has said he will do something this year that he has admitted to being bad at in the past. He will enjoy every last moment of this season. As he does that, my plan is to try to share all those moments with you. My goal is to let you enjoy every last minute of this final season as much as Derek does. My other goal is to hopefully convey just how impressive Derek Jeter has been throughout his career to those of you who think he may be a bit overrated.
So I hope you enjoy the future installments of “The Final Season.”
Obamacare has not yet turned America into a nation of part-time workers, as many of its strongest critics have long said it would.
In fact, the opposite seems to be happening, according to new government numbers published Friday: The number of part-time jobs is actually shrinking, and full-time jobs are being created instead.
Specifically, the number of part-time workers in the U.S. fell in February to about 27.3 million, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday. That number is down by about 300,000 since March 2010, when the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, became law.
Meanwhile, the ranks of full-time workers have grown by more than 2 million within the past year to 117.8 million in February. The number of part-time workers fell by about 230,000 over that period.
Republicans argue that Obamacare’s decree that businesses must give full-time workers health-care coverage will cause a bunch of jobs to switch from full-time to part-time. And a handful of employers have actually cut worker hours because of Obamacare.
But the majority of those cutting hours are in the struggling public sector — state and local governments. In the private sector, the chief financial officers of 500 companies recently said that Obamacare will have a limited impact on their hiring decisions.
This is for all who still believe Tupac is alive. This picture was taken on march 6 at a basketball game between The Celtics and The Warriors.
The Warriors had no problems controlling just about every aspect of the game, and a restless crowd found the famed rapper sitting in the audience. With nothing else to cheer for, the audience began recognizing the presence in the room.
“LET’S GO TUPAC! LET’S GO TUPAC!”
This picture was tweeted out by one if the attendees.
