A Vermont Man Offers Burial Plot in CT to the family of Tamerlan Tsarnaev

The family of the Boston bombing suspect has been having a difficult time finding a cemetery willing to bury him. A cemetery in Enfield said no, but now the Yale Divinity School graduate is offering a plot in Hamden.

Paul Keane said he would offer the plot inside the Mount Carmel Burial Ground under one condition – that it’s done in memory of his mother, Barbara, who passed away in 1985.

She taught Sunday School for 20 years at the Mount Carmel Church. He said he wants to do this because she taught him “love thine enemy,” even if the enemy is a terrorist.

“This person, no matter how much of a pariah. No matter how despicable. No matter what a leper he is,” Keane told our CBS affiliate station WCAX in Vermont.

Mount Carmel cemetery is the oldest in Hamden and owned by a society. Each plot is owned individually.

In his blog Keane writes, “I own the plot and no one can refuse me access,” but that isn’t sitting well with local residents and those that have loved one buried there.

But, Connecticut residents disagree with Keane.

“He did an act of terrorism against this country, and I don’t think he should be buried on this soil,” said Sandra Marenholz of Cheshire.

People, who have loved ones at the Mount Carmel cemetery, gathered Tuesday as a group to voice their concerns about having the known killer buried in Hamden.

“To have this person who has no connection to town to city to state, sort of unceremoniously dumped here because no one else wants him is a concern,” said Franz Douskey of Hamden.

Charles Ramsey’s 911 Call

Charles Ramsey: “I knew something was wrong when a little pretty white girl ran into a black man’s arms”

“Bro, I knew something was wrong when a little pretty white girl ran into a black man’s arms.” That is the now famous comment by Charles Ramsey, as he explained how he helped rescue three young women who were captive for 10 years.

“Something is wrong here. Dead give away, dead give away! Dead give away, because either she’s homeless or she’s got problems because that’s the only reason she run to a black man.”

Ramsey explained that he was eating his McDonalds on Monday when all hell broke loose.

“I’m eating my McDonalds. I come outside and I see this girl going nuts trying to get out of her house so I go on the porch and she says, ‘Help me get out, I’ve been in here a long time.'”

Charles goes on to say that his neighbor, Ariel Castro, seemed like a normal guy. “There’s nothing exciting about him” Ramsey said. “I barbecue with this dude. We eat ribs and what not, and listen to salsa music. See where I’m coming from?”

Ramsey thought what his neighbor did by keeping all these women against their will took some real kahunas, or to use his words, “you got some big testicles to pull this off.”

Three brothers were taken into custody for keeping the women hostage.

Child Abuse Hotline Ad Uses Photographic Trick That Makes It Visible Only To Children

How can organizations aimed at putting an end to child abuse send a message to children without also tipping off adults? It might be as simple as creating an ad that only children can see.

A Spanish organization called Fundación ANAR, or Aid to Children and Adolescents at Risk, created a bus-stop advertisement in April that features the group’s hotline number for children to report abuse. But by using a process called lenticular photography, the company made the hotline number, and much of the ad’s content, visible only to those under a certain height — presumably children.

Lenticular photography allows companies to create an image in a way that lets viewers see one of several different photos, depending on where they’re standing. In the case of ANAR’s ad, anyone taller than 4 feet 5 inches — the average height of a 10-year-old, according to the group — would see a picture of a boy with an unmarked face and the following message: “Sometimes, child abuse is only visible to the child suffering it.” Anyone under that height would see an image of the boy with a bruised face, the organization’s hotline number (116-111) in white text, and the message, “If somebody hurts you, phone us and we’ll help you.”

Evidence suggests that in the U.S., it’s a difficult task to get more abused children to contact authorities. According to the Fourth National Incidence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect, the majority of reports of child abuse come from “mandated reporters,” those in professions required by law to report signs of abuse if they see them.

But the campaign has succeeded in spreading awareness, which is what its creators wanted most. The YouTube video for the company’s ad campaign says, “thanks to the publicity on media and all the comments on social networks, the campaign has achieved its main objective: Raise awareness of the Foundation and [its] phone number 116-111 for children and teenagers at risk.”

Three Cleveland Women Missing Almost a Decade Found Alive

Amanda Berry, left, and Gina DeJesus are shown in these undated photos provided by the FBI. (FBI)

Three young women who vanished a decade ago near their homes in Cleveland were found only miles from where they disappeared, and three brothers have been arrested in relation to the incident, according to police.

Gina DeJesus, Amanda Berry and Michele Knight were found alive, and Cleveland Police Commander Keith Sulver said all three women were getting medical treatment but seemed to be in good condition.

“All of them are doing well. They all look good,” he said. “They’re all talking. They’re aware of everything that’s going on, and we’re just very happy that they’re safe and in good condition.”

Dr. Gerald Maloney with Metro Health Medical Center said tonight that the women were safe and that the hospital was evaluating their medical needs, and how long they’ll stay. The spokesman confirmed that the women are in fair condition at the moment.

“This isn’t the ending we usually get,” Maloney said. “We’re very happy, very happy.”

The victims are being examined for possible abuse at the hospital, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

Police confirmed to ABC News affiliate WEWS that one of the men taken into custody is 52-year-old Ariel Castro. Police have not released the names of Castro’s brother but said they were 50 and 54 years old. Chargers were expected to come within the next 36 hours.

Police have not said how the women were found, but neighbors said they heard cries for help coming from a house, and when they went to investigate kicked open the door of the home to get the women out.

Neighbor Charles Ramsey said that he was eating at McDonald’s when he heard a girl screaming.

March of the Cicadas

They’re Baaacckk!

If you live on the East Coast and haven’t heard yet, we are in for a(un)pleasant visit from a swarm of cicadas (Brood II) who have spent a lengthy amount of time (17 years to be exact) underground developing and preparing for this upcoming swarm.

The million cicadas march will begin their travels this May starting from as far down as Georgia and stretching as far north as New York and Connecticut.

Residents in the Washington DC area, Philadelphia, and New York should begin seeing these diligent insects sometime around June.

Even though they have spent an insurmountable time underground, the cicadas lifespan as an adult above ground only lasts for 2-3 weeks and only the strong will survive the entire trip.

You’ll know that they’ve arrived once you hear that recognizable loud buzzing sound that will surely be amplified due to the incredible size of this swarm.

Cicada means tree cricket, so while they are no threat to humans, they can leave a most damaging effect on various small to larger trees. Using a pest netting to cover smaller trees/bushes and applying aluminum foil to tree trunks can help minimize damage.

Movies You Should See: Girl Rising

UPDATE: See Girl Rising this Sunday, June 16th on CNN at 9PM EST!!!

In an increasing effort to shine a light on what happens when girls in the developing world rise up and above obstacles in their lives, 10X10 films brings us Girl Rising by Academy Award nominated director Richard Robbins. Nine girls’ stories from around the world. Each girl paired with a writer from their own country to tell of the journey to where they are now. Narrative performances by Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchette, Salma Hayek, Selena Gomez, Alicia Keys, Meryl Streep, Priyanka Chopra, Kerry Washington, Chloe Moretz, Liam Neeson, and Frida Pinto draw you in.

Wadley, a precocious third grader in Haiti, loves going to school. She takes pride in memorizing her history passages. One evening while doing her homework the earthquake hits. Wadley and her mother’s world is turned upside down and around. In the aftermath, Wadley walks a long way each day to get water for the family. One day she sees that the school has opened up again; Wadley runs home to tell her mother. Heartbroken when her mother tells her she can’t go to school because they don’t have any money, Wadley decides to go to school the next day. Her teacher recognizes her and tells her unless her mother has paid she has to leave; embarrassed Wadley walks home. The next day she vows to go back until they let her stay.

Azmera was 13 when her mother was about to agree to an arranged marriage to some strange visitors one day. The only daughter alive in her family, Azmera and her brother are all their mother has left after her husband dies early and she loses a child still young. Thankfully, just in the nick of time, Azmera’s brother walks in from tending the fields of Ethiopia and sees what’s about to happen. In a chivalrous gesture, he pleads with his mother and puts his foot down as the man of the house saying that Azmera will not marry one of the men.

Those were the easiest stories to take in. However each story, no matter the outcome, grips you in the heart and squeezes. Every girls’ story is compelling. Interlaced with statistics of what happens when countries decide to educate their girls or not, Girl Rising demands we take notice and action.

In their own way each girl gives us solid reasons to help their fight. Amina, the 11 year old forced into marriage in Afghanistan puts it quite eloquently and to the point, “I will read. I will study. I will learn. If you try to stop me, I’ll just try harder. If you stop me, there will be other girls who will rise up and take my place. I am change.”

If those girls can fight for themselves in some of the most dire circumstances, surely we can take time to speak up for them and others like them around the world.

Fugitive Joanne Chesimard Is First Woman on Most Wanted Terrorists List

Cop Killer Is First Woman on Most Wanted Terrorist
Joanne Chesimard, a left-wing militant who shot a state trooper on the New Jersey Turnpike 40 years ago today, has become the first woman on the FBI’s list of Most Wanted Terrorists.

“Joanne Chesimard is a domestic terrorist who murdered a law enforcement officer execution-style,” said Aaron Ford, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Newark Division.

Chesimard, a fugitive living in Cuba under the name Assata Shakur, was a member of the Black Liberation Army in 1973 when she shot and killed Trooper Werner Foerster during a traffic stop.

According to a state police account, “Foerster was severely wounded in his right arm and abdomen and then executed with his own service weapon on the roadside. Chesimard’s jammed handgun was found at Foerster’s side.”

Chesimard, now 65, was convicted in 1977. Two years later she escaped from the prison where she was serving a life sentence, spent time in a series of safe houses in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and fled in 1984 to Cuba, where New Jersey State Police Col. Rick Fuentes said she “flaunts her freedom.”

“To this day from her safe haven in Cuba Chesimard has been given a pulpit to preach and profess, stirring supporters and groups to mobilize against the United States by any means necessary,” Fuentes said.

The reward for her capture and safe return has been doubled to $2 million.

“We want her to come back here and face justice and serve out her sentence,” New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa said.

Chesimard is also known as the godmother of slain rapper Tupac Shakur.

Rape Suspect Jailed for 3 Months Begged for DNA Test

Patrick Edward Misner was charged with rape and molestation after his neighbor, Tommy Braden, was proven innocent of the crime through a DNA test in Oklahoma. (Oklahoma Department of Corrections)

An Oklahoma man who was arrested and jailed for allegedly raping a 4-year-old girl intends to sue authorities for holding for three months while he pleaded with them to perform a DNA test, which eventually cleared him.

Tommy Braden, 26, of Sapulpa, Okla., was arrested in April 2012 after he called 911 in the morning to report that he had woken up to find his girlfriend’s daughter, age 4, bleeding on her bed. He also reported a broken window in their mobile home and blood on the front porch, Smolen told ABC News. Braden shared the home with his girlfriend, their biological child, and the 4-year-old.

According to Braden’s attorney Don Smolen, Creek County Sheriff’s officers arrested and charged Braden with the girl’s rape. Officials took a swab of his DNA at the time, but refused to test the sample for a DNA match with the semen and pubic hair found at the scene of the crime.

“He was openly cooperating, doing everything he can to prove that it wasn’t him,” Smolen said. “They found pubic hair and semen at the scene that’s never tested… It takes three months for them to get it done and only after the court orders them to do it… It’s just crazy to me.”

“Rarely do you have someone suspected of such horrific crime begging to give DNA. If you’ve got the opportunity where someone’s voluntarily giving you sample, why not get it tested and confirm or deny whether it was him?” the lawyer asked.

The Creek County Sheriff’s office did not respond to requests for comment from ABC.

Funeral Director Says Cemeteries Don’t Want Boston Bomber’s Body

(AP) – A funeral home director was scrambling to find a cemetery that would bury a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings, ignoring protesters gathered outside his business and saying everybody deserves a dignified burial service no matter the circumstances of his or her death.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, died from “gunshot wounds of torso and extremities” and blunt trauma to his head and torso, said Worcester funeral home owner Peter Stefan, who has Tsarnaev’s body and on Friday read details from his death certificate. The certificate lists the time of his death as 1:35 a.m. on April 19, four days after the deadly bombing, Stefan said.

Tsarnaev died after a gunfight with authorities who had launched a massive manhunt for him and his brother, ethnic Chechens from Russia who came to the United States about a decade ago. Police have said he ran out of ammunition before his younger brother dragged his body under a vehicle while fleeing.

Tsarnaev’s family was making arrangements Friday for his funeral as investigators searched the woods near a college attended by 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was captured less than a day after his brother’s death.

Rat meat sold as lamb in latest China food scandal

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese police have broken up a criminal ring accused of taking meat from rats and foxes and selling it as lamb in the country’s latest food safety scandal.

The Ministry of Public Security released results of a three-month crackdown on food safety violators, saying in a statement that authorities investigated more than 380 cases and arrested 904 suspects.

Among those arrested were 63 people who allegedly ran an operation in Shanghai and the coastal city of Wuxi that bought fox, mink, rat and other meat that had not been tested for quality and safety, processed it with additives like gelatin and passed it off as lamb.

The meat was sold to farmers’ markets in Jiangsu province and Shanghai, it said.

Despite years of food scandals — from milk contaminated with an industrial chemical to the use of industrial dyes in eggs — China has been unable to clean up its food supply chain.

The announcement came as China’s top court on Friday issued guidelines calling for harsher punishment for making and selling unsafe food products in the latest response to tainted food scandals that have angered the public.
