Amazon Echo Needed to Help Solve Murder Case

Investigators are trying to get Amazon to give up recordings from an Amazon Echo found in the home where a murder was committed. But Amazon is putting up a fight to protect the privacy of a customer.

The murder happened in November of 2015 in the home of James Bates. According to the investigation, Bates invited two friends to his house for drinks. At some point, the other two men went into the hot tub and according to Bates, he went to bed. When he woke the next morning, one of the men lay face down in the tub. An Amazon Echo was in the room at the time and police are trying to get Amazon to turn in the recordings.

“Amazon will not release customer information without a valid and binding legal demand properly served on us,” the company said in a statement. “Amazon objects to overbroad or otherwise inappropriate demands as a matter of course.”

The case and the request for recordings from Amazon could go to the higher courts. Bates, who was arrested in February on suspicion of first-degree murder, is presently free on a $350,000 bond. A discovery hearing in his case is scheduled for March.

8-Year-Old Boy Charged With Murdering 1-Year-Old Girl

The 8-year-old was apparently the oldest child in the house and left there the supervised the 1-year-old and three other children. He attacked and killed the child because the she wouldn’t stop crying. And where was the mother you ask? She was out clubbing for the night!

An 8-year-old Birmingham boy is charged with murder in the beating death of a toddler girl left in his care, the youngest person in recent memory charged with murder in Jefferson County.

The girl’s mother is charged with manslaughter after police say she left her young daughter in the care of a group of children while she partied at a nightclub.

“This is one  of the most heartbreaking investigations that I have seen in over 30 years of my law enforcement career,” said Birmingham police Chief A.C. Roper.

“There are just too many deep rooted issues in this horrific crime. It’s extremely troubling from so many different angles and there are no law enforcement answers to prevent it,” Roper said. “We’ve been concerned about the kids and the future effect on their lives. The bottom line is an innocent young baby lost her life and that should be a wake-up call for our community.”

Kelci Devine Lewis, who turned 1 in May, was found unresponsive in her crib at 10:45 a.m. Oct. 12. Police were called to the home on Second Avenue South, and Kelci was taken to Children’s of Alabama where she was pronounced dead at 11:07 a.m.

Authorities have said there were visible injuries to the girl. She died from blunt force trauma to the head, and internal injuries, Birmingham police spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards has said.

ISIS Reportedly Beheads Japanese Man… For Islam?

I mean this is getting old. What other reason could there be for a group that calls itself, The Islamic State, to kill people? Is this a requirement of Islam, that you capture innocent people then murder them if you cannot receive a ransom? And if it is a requirement, is it in the Quran?

The father of the Japanese hostage purportedly killed by Islamic State (IS) militants is hoping his son could still be alive.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the video apparently showing the killing of 42-year-old adventurer Haruna Yukawa was likely authentic and demanded the militants release the other hostage, reporter Kenji Goto, 47.

But Mr Yukawa’s father Shoichi Yukawa said he was “hoping deep in my heart” his son was still alive.

“My mind went totally blank,” he told reporters on Sunday, a day after news broke of the video footage. “I am hoping deep in my heart that it is not true.”

IS, also known as ISIS or ISIL, had threatened to behead Mr Yukawa and Mr Goto unless it received a $200 million ransom.

“If I am ever reunited with him, I just want to give him a big hug,” Mr Yukawa told Japanese TV.

The Utah Cop Who Murdered His Family, Secretly Raped His Wife

Heated text messages between Joshua Boren and his wife Kelly, just hours before Boren – a cop from Utah – killed Kelly, his two kids, his mother-in-law and then himself, showed that Boren drugged, raped and videotaped the raping of his wife on multiple occasions, according to a Spanish Fork Police report.

In them, Kelly Boren confronted her husband about raping her and told him their marriage was over, The Deseret News reported. The couple already had been separated for some time.

Joshua Boren’s therapist told authorities that Boren drugged his wife and videotaped himself sexually assaulting her on more than one occasion.

Kelly Boren learned of the assaults when she discovered the tapes in 2013, said Spanish Fork Police Lt. Matt Johnson. She told a few friends, but she did not report the assaults to police because she didn’t want to ruin her husband’s law enforcement career, the report says.

The night before she was killed, Kelly Boren brought up the alleged sexual assault again, texting the word “rape” to her husband four times, the documents show. “I hate my life because (of) you,” she texted. “You killed a part of me.”

She wrote in another text: “I don’t want to live in fear and hate and anger.”

Nigel McIntosh, the brother of Marie King, speaks at the funeral for her, daughter, Kelly Boren, and her grandchildren, Joshua (Jaden) Boren and Haley Boren at Lindquist”s Layton Chapel in Layton, Utah.

The next morning, Kelly Boren told her husband she would take the kids, prompting Joshua Boren to reply by text: “Don’t involve the kids, they are innocent.”

The police report says Joshua Boren was sexually abused as a child, struggled with drug addiction as a young man and pornography addiction throughout his life, and had a deep-rooted hatred for his mother.

After his father committed suicide when he was 5, Joshua Boren’s mother began using drugs and seeing several men, the report states. One of those men allegedly abused Joshua Boren, and he blamed his mother for not protecting him, his sister told police.

The therapist told police Boren was like a “3-year-old boy stuck in a big man’s body.”

“Josh was a very troubled individual that felt like he was about to lose his wife and children,” police wrote in the report.

Mom On Trial for Murdering Her 4 Year Old Because She Thought He Was Gay

An Oregon mother of four is on trial in Portland for the murder of her four-year old boy. Prosecutors says that Jessica Dutro complained on Facebook to her boyfriend that her son, Zachary, was gay, and beat him on several occasions because of it.

In the Facebook message to her boyfriend Brian Canady, which was read in court today, Jessica Dutro said that her son Zachary was “facing the wall” because he had made her mad, OregonLive reports:

Her son was going to be gay, she wrote, using a slur. “He walks and talks like it. Ugh.”

Canady would have to “work on” Zachary, she wrote.

On August 12, 2012, Canady allegedly violently kicked four-year old Zachary in the stomach. He reportedly refused to take the child to the hospital. When the boy finally was taken to the emergency room — two days later — it was too late. He was taken off life support August 16, 2012. The cause of death was blunt force trauma “to his abdomen that caused tears in his bowel,” OregonLive reported.

Zachary “was covered in bumps and bruises,” OregonLove notes in a separate report, “but he died from two holes in his intestines caused by blunt-force trauma. Urine and feces seeped from the holes and harmed his vital organs.”

Jordan Davis’ Killer Found Guilty on 4 Counts, Mistrial on First Degree Murder

Michael Dunn

The Florida jury in the case of Michael Dunn found him guilty on four charges, including three for attempted second-degree murder, but they couldn’t reach a verdict on the most significant charge — first-degree murder in the death of Jordan Davis.

After the decisions were read out around 7 p.m. Saturday in court, Judge Russell Healey — who moments before had said that the jury had reached a verdict on all counts — declared a mistrial on the murder count.

That possibility had floated around since 4:45 p.m. Saturday, when the 12 jurors sent a note saying they’d decided on four of the five counts that Dunn faces. But they hadn’t unanimously reached a verdict “on count 1 or any of the lesser included offenses related to it.”

Count 1 is first-degree murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old Davis.

Jurors could have decided not to convict Dunn on that charge but instead find him guilty on lesser charges such as manslaughter. Or they could have acquitted him altogether on this count.

With the hung jury, prosecutors could press for a new trial on the murder charge.

Regardless — and pending defense appeals — Dunn appears set to face a lengthy prison term.

Remembering Trayvon – Events Planned This Weekend in South Florida

Actor Jamie Foxx and the families of Emmett Till and Oscar Grant are joining South Florida residents this weekend to commemorate the second anniversary of Trayvon Martin’s fatal shooting by neighborhood watch leader George Zimmerman.

A peace walk is planned for Saturday in Miami Gardens, and a gala hosted by The Trayvon Martin Foundation is planned for Sunday in Davie on what would have been Martin’s 19th birthday.

A spokeswoman for Martin’s family says the focus of the weekend is to explore strategies to reduce violence.

Till, a black teen, was murdered in Mississippi in 1955, and Grant, also a black teen, was fatally shot by a police officer in Oakland in 2009.

Zimmerman was acquitted last summer of fatally shooting the unarmed Martin, who is black, in February 2012.
